It’s Music, It’s Comedy, It’s Improv, It’s Drama! It’s the Academy Theatre!
Located just seven miles from Atlanta’s bustling downtown and in close proximity to the world’s busiest airport, the city of Hapeville has undergone a remarkable transformation from a post-WWII industrial town to a captivating destination for artistic expression in recent decades. With its downtown dotted with striking sculptures and vibrant murals, the city has been aptly dubbed “a home for the arts”. At the heart of the community’s creative fabric lies the Academy Theatre, an enduring institution that o ers a diverse range of performances – everything from dramas, musicals, magic shows, and improv comedy – that captivate locals and visitors alike.
Founded in 1956, the Academy Theatre holds the distinction of being Georgia’s longest-running professional theater. Throughout its storied history, the theater has nurtured the careers of numerous notable talents, including acclaimed artists such as Samuel L. Jackson, Kenny Leon, Brenda Porter, Chris Kayser, Rosemary Newcott, Tim Stoltenberg, Gary Anthony Williams, Phillip DePoy, Lauren Gunderson, and David Hasselho , as well as leading national arts administrators such as Amanda Washington from Actors Express. This enduring success can be attributed, in part, to the remarkable leadership provided by managing director Lorenne Fey and artistic director Robert Drake. With a shared
passion for the arts and decades of experience, Fey and Drake have played instrumental roles in shaping the theater’s trajectory and ensuring its longevity.
While the Academy Theatre has called several locations in the metro Atlanta area home over the years, Fey and Drake agree that Hapeville feels like its forever home. Ten years ago, when the theater moved to Hapeville, Fey, with the help of David Burt (City of Hapeville’s Economic Development Consultant), had the opportunity to design a space that catered specifically to the theater’s needs. In addition to the main theater, which comfortably seats 128 patrons along with 8 VIP box seats, they also created an intimate cabaret space called the Diamond Stage, capable of accommodating up to 65 guests. The Diamond Stage has quickly become a renowned “listening room,” hosting smaller acts and captivating performances by talents such as Atlanta-based cabaret performer Dom L’Amour, who has already sold out two shows at the theater. One of the main attractions at the Academy Theatre is the popular Sunday Variety Series, held every Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8:30. This series showcases a diverse range of acts, from talented Frank Sinatra impersonators to mesmerizing magicians. Drake leverages his extensive experi-
ence and reputation within the Atlanta theater community to curate the series with discerning quality, attracting both established and emerging talents. The Sunday Variety Series has not only become a favorite among theater enthusiasts but also a weekly community-building event. The theater’s accessibility and welcoming atmosphere make it an ideal destination for locals to enjoy a delightful Sunday evening show.
their chosen careers. The internship program has proven to be a sought-after resume builder, with past interns making notable contributions both on and off the stage.
An important part of the Academy’s mission is its commitment to outreach into the community. The Academy has reestablished its Academy Theatre Institute for Educators, a highly successful teacher training program. Part of its community outreach belief is that artists working together over a long period of time create better art. With this in mind, the Academy collaborates with four (4) in residence companies: IMPACT Theatre Atlanta, Lynna Schmidt Productions, Laughing Matters, and Giwayen Mata - the dynamic, soul stirring, all sistah, dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble. This 67-year commitment to community outreach is what differentiates the Academy from other theatres. Continued on page
Beyond its commitment to producing an eight-play mainstage season of exceptional performances, the Academy Theatre is dedicated to nurturing the future of theater through its internship program. Each year, Robert Drake takes aspiring theater enthusiasts, ranging from high-school seniors to post-graduate students, under his wing, sharing his passion and extensive knowledge of the craft. These interns, affectionately referred to as “ducklings,” gain invaluable skills that serve them well in
Academy Theatre Continued from page 11
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Academy Theatre faced unprecedented challenges. However, through resilience and innovation, Fey and Drake found ways to bring performances to the community safely. With the incredible support of the City of Hapeville leadership and an art-appreciating community, the theater weathered the darkest days of the pandemic. As society adapts to the post-COVID new normal, Fey and Drake have noticed changes in audience behavior, including a hesitancy to explore completely new experiences in a theater setting. Recognizing this, Drake emphasizes the importance and power of live theater, encouraging audiences to embrace the unique intimacy it offers and to take chances on new productions. To entice audiences of all ages to return to pre-COVID theater habits, the theater offers a diverse range of shows, including classic American dramas, spoken word poetry, and captivating music performances.
Looking Ahead: Celebrating 10 Years and
Beyond
Fall of 2023 marks a significant milestone for the Academy Theatre as it celebrates its ten-year an-
niversary in Hapeville. Plans are already underway to commemorate this achievement in a grand fashion. Drake envisions showcasing a quintessential American play, such as the classic drama “Death of a Salesman,” or paying homage to the longest-running musical in the United States, “The Fantasticks,” as a tribute to the theater’s rich history. Even more exciting than marking a decade in Hapeville is the prospect of the next ten years in this supportive community that has warmly embraced the Academy Theatre.
As the Academy Theatre continues to thrive in Hapeville, it solidifies the city’s reputation as a true home for the arts. With its rich heritage, commitment to fostering talent, and a diverse array of performances, the theater captivates audiences and fosters a sense of community. As the theater looks towards the future, it embraces new challenges and opportunities, further cementing its position as a haven for artistic expression in the heart of Hapeville, GA.
The Academy Theatre wishes to express its gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the city of Hapeville: its mayor, city council and all its residents for their support throughout the past 10 years.

Hapeville Auto Show Brews Co ee and Nostalgia
Many people are hooked – rehabbing and displaying vintage cars from eras long ago. Car enthusiasts go from show to show, seeing people who are part of their “auto” family where the brew of vintage never grows old. Participants who attended the Hapeville Co ee and Chrome Car & Motorcycle Show stated they often have added custom body work (whether parts, paint or engines) to their vehicles.
It’s a weekend passion for many enthusiasts to attend these shows, showcasing their classic, retooled, or unique vehicles.
Nostalgia filled in the air – vehicle owners reminiscing through their displays of bygone automotive & motorcycle eras. Held at Jess Lucas Y-Teen Park in Hapeville, attendees were treated to a family atmosphere, sharing of knowledge on vintage cars and displays of classic vehicles.
Jamie Jones, Hapeville Special Events Manager, said: “This is an event where older and younger generations can connect.”
Hapeville Mayor Alan Hallman echoed this sentiment, saying, “Cars are something that a diverse set of folks are interested in. Co ee & Chrome attracts folks from all over the Metro Atlanta area…people of all ages enjoying what the show has to o er.”
With classic songs from the 60s, 70s, & 80s playing in the background, a food truck and rows of classic cars & motorcycles, the show is a family-oriented delight. Talk with Robert Elliott (a participant at the show) & you will hear the enthusiasm, devotion and passion of a die-hard car enthusiast. Elliott, owner of a light beige 1970 Charger, said his vehicle was still in good condition, with little rust, and had 143,000 miles. He attends and displays at classic shows “to
By Della Spearmanmeet like-minded people.” Flanagan, a fellow car a cionado displaying a blue 1966 Chevrolet truck, said his love stemmed from learning “how to drive in one of these.”
Each participant who displayed a vehicle had quite a bad but good habit-rehabbing & displaying cars or motorcycles. Most were happy to share with event attendees about their vehicle manufacturer, childhood and how their vehicle was customized for display at shows & for personal enjoyment.
Jones explained, “Even for people who don’t know much about cars, it’s still easy to appreciate their beauty and how immaculately they have been maintained and cared for. You can learn about automotive history and engineering just by talking to folks showing cars. They love sharing their knowledge.”
Tim Young (City Manager of Hapeville), a first-time attendee, noted how inclusive, open & diverse the Hapeville community is and that he attended for personal enjoyment.
Lewis Jackson, owner of Kultured Society Rods and Customs (known for collision repair and custom body & paint work) in Forest Park, did not have a vehicle to display this time but brought his art to show. Originally from a family of four boys in Michigan, he went to alternative school and his interest was in automotive care. Jackson showcased his made to order wooden tailgate benches and key racks. “I’m just a regular guy that loves cars, my family, and my business.”
Jones explained, “This event is free and does not earn revenue. It’s simply an opportunity to bring new folks to Hapeville and give them a taste of all the city has to o er. We are grateful to our community sponsors for helping make this event possible.”

When looking for experiences to cherish for a lifetime, one needs only to look at the world around them. Fairburn is a city with smalltown charm nestled away from the traffic, hustle, and bustle situated 15 miles south of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Up in Smoke
The famed American novelist, humorist and travel writer Samuel Clemens, who wrote under the pen name “Mark Twain”, was also an avid cigar smoker. Perhaps two of his most famous cigar quotes are “I never smoke to excess-that is, I smoke only one cigar at a time” and “Eating and sleeping are the only activities that should interrupt a man’s enjoyment of his cigar.”
In an e ort to give both men and women smokers a relaxing, comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere, the ATL District is home to a number of cigar lounges and cigar bars designed to o er an inviting place for those who find that smoking a cigar is not only allowed but encouraged there.
Blendz 2 Cigar and Hookah - ad on page 41
An idea that began as a basement feel lounge with live mu-
By Bill Baldowskisic and great ambiance has blossomed into the first “brick and mortar” location for owner Antar Bailey. The Blendz 2 in Hapeville on S Central Avenue o ers both cigar and hookah options with preferred libations & food choices so men and women can have the best of both “smoke” worlds.
“From having game nights, karaoke, 9 TVs for sports fans to a DJ and live entertainment, you can count on Blendz 2 as your basement feel get away,” Bailey said. “I think the fact that Blendz 2 Cigar & Hookah Lounge has many di erent evening activities sets us apart from other prototypical lounges.”
Bailey continues, “We coined and embody the phrase: ‘Smoke with me if you want to know me-Blendz’ “. With a great selection of cigars and hookah choices, many di erent evening activities and great service, Blendz 2 is an excellent choice for great conversations, relationships and networking.
Cigar Society - ad on center map ads
According to owner Cris Reid, Cigar Society is not your typical cigar lounge.
“If a customer has a special event planned, Cigar Society will either host the event or will come to the site of the event,” Reid said.
He considered starting a cigar business five years ago when he felt that the cigar business near to where he lived did not o er the selection Reid felt such a business should have on hand.
In addition, that business had a dress code and other rules that he felt limited access to clientele.
“I wanted to create a lounge that had no dress code and had a wide variety of cigar choices for customers.”
As to what makes his business special, Reid said it was the mobility of the business to go anywhere as well as the quality of customer services offered.
He emphasized that the success of his business lies in its team of employees. “Service always goes a long way as customers remember how they were treated…,” he said.
El Jefe - ad on page 45
El Jefe has been on the cigar lounge scene in College Park for two years under the leadership of its founder and CEO Chris Francis.
As Francis tells us, he had experience in this type of business, so a friend asked for his help in starting one along with a partner. When his friend’s business partner left, Francis was brought on board. Since then, El Jefe, which is Spanish for “The Boss,” has grown in client consistency. With a conference room which can be used to combine business with the pleasure of smoking cigars, Francis said the business hosts about 50 patrons daily.
Francis added, “We had a vision in mind to be very versatile and continue to follow that same plan. Our patrons can come in, relax, enjoy a cigar and just get away from the hustle and bustle of work.”
Kings Cigars - ad on center map ads
Kings Cigars founder and CEO, Anthony Zillamon, said he has been smoking cigars since 2006 and has always enjoyed the comradery he developed with other cigar smokers.
“We used to go to this one particular spot in East Point called Oscar’s Cigars-one of the first black-owned in the area.”
Unfortunately that shop closed but “That got me to thinking I could develop a business like this in Hapeville,” he said. “I did my due diligence and put my resources to work and I came up with the idea to start such a business.”
In 2016, the opportunity developed, “and we have been
here ever since,” Zillamon said.
He added he has his own favorite brand of cigar, but he carries a number of other brands because each cigar smoker has his or her own favorite cigar(s).
“Our attendance each day kind of depends on what we have going on” Zillamon said. “However, most of our customers just come in to relax, light up a cigar and develop friendships with other cigar smokers.”
“I believe strongly in customer service and treating our customers like I would want to be treated,” Zillamon said.
Montana Cigars - ad on page 45
The Montana Cigar Company, one of the first premium cigar retailers and lounges in Union City, began as an idea to transform a friend’s basement into a cigar lounge, said Montana Cigar owner Chris Francis.
“When I moved, I decided to build out my basement and enlarge it so my friend and I could smoke cigars.”
That idea developed into the present Montana Cigar Lounge that can comfortably seat 30 patrons.
“Now in its sixth year, our patrons can enjoy smoking a good cigar while playing chess or checkers,” Francis said.
As to what he believes has made the Montana Cigar Lounge so different as well as successful, it’s the efforts made by Francis and his staff to make patrons feel as much at home as possible, beginning with the lounge having no dress code. He said the business has become popular as a location where individuals or friends can enjoy a quiet place to talk about what is on their minds while smoking their favorite cigar.”
As you can see, cigar lounges and bars offer a variety of cigar brands, quality customer service and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere where anyone can enjoy a good smoke, good conversation and relief from the busy, noisy activities of life.
