HAPEVILLE Bustling with growth, the City of Hapeville is the epicenter of the resurgence for the Atlanta Airport area. Rev up your engines, y’all! This year marks 70 years of Porsche in the USA, and the brand does not plan on leaving its Atlanta home anytime soon. Buckle up and ride along for a behindthe-scenes look at where this longstanding Atlanta staple is headed. Porsche Background Porsche arrived on the sports car scene June 8, 1948, when it registered the 356 “No. 1” Roadster. Founder Ferdinand Porsche and his son “Ferry” Porsche looked around and could not find their “dream car”. So the father and son duo decided to build it. Since then, the pursuit of performance has driven the company on both the road and the race track. In fact, Porsche’s racing heritage–which boasts more than 30,000 motorsport wins to date–can be traced throughout the design and details of each Porsche. A key example is in the ignition. The ignition in a Porsche is always to the left of the steering wheel. This element dates back to when the Le Mans car race had a running start; racers would have to run to their cars before they could take off on the racetrack. Placing the ignition to the left of the steering wheel meant racers could operate the key with one hand and put the car into gear with the

other–saving valuable time and maximizing efficiency. Today, Porsche not only manufactures cars, but also provides exclusive and sporty mobility. In Atlanta, Porsche offers vehicle subscription and short-term rental options for those wanting to experience the Porsche brand. The Porsche Drive – Subscription and Porsche Drive – Rental allow flexible access to the brand. Porsche Experience Enthusiasts seeking access to the Porsche brand cannot miss the aptly named, Porsche Experience Center (PEC). The PEC features track driving, heritage displays, fine dining, shopping, a café, event spaces, simulator racing and more–all set in a dynamic atmosphere. Located minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta is regarded as a brand embassy. Since opening in 2015, the PEC has welcomed more than 270,000 visitors and invited them to partake in the Porsche passion. The main attraction at the PEC is the driving experience. For an exciting 90 minutes, patrons get behind the wheel of a Porsche of their choosing. A trained instructor leads the way, in a separate vehicle, to help drivers extract the most from

the car and the experience. Designed to mimic a winding country road, the driver development track is surrounded by different modules: wet skid pad, acceleration straight, off-road course, and more. Aspiring daredevils can carve corners, catch slides, or go for a full throttle “Launch Control” repeatedly; the experience is, ultimately, up to the driver. Many guests also take advantage of the demonstration laps. During these demonstrations, the instructor is in the driver’s seat and pushes Porsche performance to the limit, showing patrons exactly what Porsche is capable of. After an exhilarating ride, it’s time to fuel up! The PEC has both a Carrera Café and Restaurant 356 for food options. The restaurant offers fine dining with a view unlike any other:

The lower levels of the Porsche Experience Center are dedicated to exhibits and classic car restoration. Porsche Giving The Porsche Experience Center is not the only way that Porsche gives back to its community. Atlanta is Porsche’s home and Hapeville is its direct neighbor. In order to keep its community and neighbors thriving, Porsche makes a point of supporting local business. Harold Hardnett-Winner at Georgia Minority Business Awards Harold Hardnett was chosen as 2020’s City CEO of the Year by the Georgia Minority Business Awards (GMBA). The GMBA committee recognizes successful individuals with superior performance, citizenship, leadership, ethical behavior, diversity and teamwork. Recipients of the GMBA City CEO of the Year award have a shared philosophy of putting customers first, increasing the value of their companies and organizations, and making their workplaces and communities great. The Georgia Minority Business Awards recognized Hardnett for his successful business, Hardnett Enterprises. Hardnett Enterprises encompasses real estate investments, vending machines and commercial cleaning services for which he has won awards for volume of business, customer service and also won an award in 2011 as CEO of the Year from another organization. Hardnett admits that entrepreneurship is not a “9 to 5 job.” A typical “day” for Hardnett begins at 10 pm and ends at 5 am. During the day he rests, does community service, goes to the office, has dinner, and spends time with his family. Over the years, he has had other entrepreneurs who have given him words of advice: C.D. Moody, Thomas Dortch, Maceo Brown and Herman Russell. When asked what drives him, Hardnett fondly recounts a meeting with Russell. Hardnett met

business tycoon Herman Russell and told Russell, matter-of-factly, that he too would be a millionaire. Russell’s advice to Hardnett was that he should focus on leaving behind a legacy instead. Hardnett has been working on his legacy ever since. A significant part of his legacy is The Harold M. Hardnett Foundation. Hardnett’s foundation has given scholarships toward college expenses to multiple students on the local, state, and national level. The foundation also provides food boxes to those in need-often delivered by Hardnett himself. The Harold M. Hardnett Foundation prides itself in empowering the community and youth. Hardnett believes it was his foundation and community service that helped him secure the Georgia Minority Business Award City CEO of the Year title. Hardnett has no plans of slowing down anytime soon but jokes he may throw in the towel if he wins the award again in the next 10 years. Among others, The Hardnett Foundation has won the Rise Award of Excellence for Helping Inner City Students. Between Hardnett Enterprises and The Harold M. Hardnett Foundation they have won 53 awards combined. Congratulations Harold Hardnett-a true asset and an inspiration to the community.

Development in the ATL One of this country’s most revered historical statesmen, Ben Franklin, once said “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” College Park city leaders, in association with the Sizemore Group, are working together in planning the city’s newest large-scale, mixed use development. Six West, formerly known as Airport City, is located less than a mile from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

“ I am thrilled there are so many people ready to give their two cents worth to this project to make sure it is truly reflective of who we are as College Park, a place which is inclusive of all its citizens, is forward looking but also honors its past.” Bill De St. Aubin, CEO of the Sizemore Group, said planning for the project started with a framework that was established last year with emphasis on diversity.

The Plan Their plan for this development has expanded by seeking the opinions of College Park citizens during an orientation video on the city’s website (ended on April 28), followed by two virtual community meetings (May 5 & June 11) so citizens could ask questions and provide comments to city leaders and development planners. According to College Park Economic Development Director Artie Jones, the project has a full build out timeline of 15 to 20 years. College Park Mayor Bianca Motley Broom said city officials have talked for months about the development “and building a community we deserve, and we cannot do that without public input.” “Six West is such an intricate part of College Park’s future and I cannot imagine this would happen without the input of our community,” the mayor said.

“We want to provide easy access to the development for residents of College Park as well as world travelers coming from the airport while also having eco-friendly design, and that vision is still intact in what we are striving for.” He also said the property on which the development will lie has a natural grid through it, “so we took a lot of the area’s existing character and

The Golf and Entertainment District will include the existing golf course with updates to the club house and event rental space, a 150-key hotel, retail space, a brewery, golf entertainment venue and residential estates on the golf course.

Michelle Alexander, College Park’s city planner, said development will be centered on 311 acres owned by the city, west of the historic downtown district and in walking distance from the College Park MARTA station.

The residential district (located above the corporate headquarters/office district), close to the golf/ entertainment district and Brady Recreation Center area, is currently under contract with a developer.

The community survey, which lasted from April 11 through May 19, garnered 211 responses. On what improvements citizens would like to see, they rated the elements from one to five, with five being the most important. Safety, public parking, bike lanes, changes at the golf course, and quality restaurants, recreation/entertainment venues, quality retail businesses and quality hotels were predominant responses in the survey.

“We would like for our residents to envision walking up Columbia Avenue and imagine it completely renovated to include a farmer’s market and a new performing arts center.” At the June 11 virtual town hall summit, where plans were discussed with input from citizens, the official vison of the project was to make College Park a global destination: rooted in diversity, equality and inclusion, easily accessible to local residents and world travelers, a showcase of smart cities and eco-friendly design.

Those responding to the survey said a quality mixed use development also needed small business opportunities, streets designed for all modes of transportation, enhanced safety, attractive shared parking facilities, service elements and rooftop venues.

As it now stands, the project is designed in different districts, including retail, residential, corporate/headquarter office, golf and entertainment, commercial increment (commercial mixed use) and a Camp Creek area. District developments include restaurant, residential, office and retail space (some of the office space will be located above the retail store space), leisure and seasonal facilities such as a cultural center, recreational playground and public art areas, a food truck plaza, a parking deck with a rock climbing wall, a food hall, hotels, a 5K trail
