Tonight, we not only celebrate the present, but we look back over the past 50 years. We remember our trailblazers and reflect on how God moves through psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, rock and hip-hop! It is said “there is a sound for every season” and the Dove Awards charts the course of an international creative community dedicated to expressing their faith without limitations. Innovators; modern day Christian Soldiers pressing their way through boundaries to reach a world in need with a new sound. The Dove Awards is the one place where multi – cultural and multi-generational expressions unite on one stage. It’s the sound of the Kingdom here on earth! It’s the sound of an Endless Hallelujah! Our mission at the Gospel Music Association is threefold; To expose, To promote, And to celebrate the gospel through music and media. For 50 years now, the Dove Awards have helped us accomplish that mission. We stand on the shoulders of giants—and we forge our future with today’s creative visionaries. In closing, may the words from Jim Meyers, the first President of GMA set the atmosphere as he reminds us of this truth. “So in the giving and the taking tonight, let us do it in very deep humility. In the realization that whether we win or lose here tonight, and winning is very sweet, but it’s of no real importance. What is of real importance, is whether that Dove of love and peace is in our hearts as true sons and daughters of the cross.“ Thank you for coming and being a part of this landmark event. Honored to Serve,
Jackie Patillo President & Executive Director

Years of Memories:
Bill Gaither A Q&A WITH ICONIC INDUSTRY VETERAN
The pages of history have been written by ordinary people who had something extraordinary to say with their lives. Bill Gaither is just such an individual... an Indiana-born kid with an insatiable love for harmony who grew to become an industry leader who would change the course of gospel music history. He is a legendary songwriter, performer, producer, educator, historian, and philanthropist whose work has stretched far beyond the confines of his small Indiana hometown and into the far reaches of the international community. The collaborations of Bill and Gloria Gaither have resulted in more than 700 popular gospel standards, including: “Because He Lives,” “The King Is Coming,” “Something Beautiful,” “He Touched Me,” “It Is Finished,” “There’s Something About That Name,” “Let’s Just Praise The Lord,” and “I Am Loved.” Their album, Alleluia: A Praise Gathering for Believers was the first inspirational album ever to achieve gold status by the Recording Industry Association of America (R.I.A.A.). To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the GMA Dove Awards, we had a special Q&A with Bill Gaither about some of his memories and insights from award shows throughout the years. Q: As someone who’s been involved from the very beginning, even helping create the first awards in 1969, we’re excited to hear your perspective on how the Dove Awards have changed and grown throughout these last 50 years. The very first awards happened at a banquet held in 1969 at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN. What can you tell us about that special night?
A: The word honor is a Biblical word and the basis for the awards grew out of that word - honor. Up until that time, in our field, there wasn’t a program to honor the “best” from that year. It started first with the GRAMMYs, and then the country field

came along, so in some ways an awards show wasn’t an original idea. That first year, I would have to say, the entire spirit of the evening was to honor songs and people who had surfaced to the top with their creativity and what they did. The Imperials won an award that night, and even today when you hear their records, they were doing some pretty innovative things. There was a beautiful innocence about it, too. It was the first time anyone had done anything like that. We were all children in our rooms saying, hey, this is pretty good. I was also on the committee that decided on the dove. We thought it was a wonderful symbol for Christian music excellence.
Q: The first televised Dove Awards aired in 1984. Glen Campbell hosted that year and there were several memorable performances, including Petra performing “Praise Ye The Lord.” How did launching the show on television change the scope of the awards?
songs, my philosophical bag is not shallow, but it’s a lot deeper with that sweet lady. She’s the deeper well to draw from. I presented her with that award with honor and pride. She deserves a whole lot more credit than what she gets. She’s a thinker, a reader and a brilliant lyricist. We’ve been married 57 years. Two explosive, artistic characters under one roof for 57 years, that’s a good story to tell. Q: 1985 was somewhat of a turning point for the Dove Awards. Amy Grant performed “Angels” that year and Steve Taylor performed “Meltdown,” breaking the mold of more traditional music performances from previous award shows. Being in the moment, did you see Amy and Steve’s performances as being pivotal for where the future of Christian music was headed?
A: Stylistically music has changed dramatically in the protestant church since way back to Martin Luther. He was not only known for his great theology, but hymns like “A Mighty Fortress Is Our A: Obviously it was going to a bigger audience. At God” and other pretty big hymns. At the time, he the same time, you’d have to hope you can keep was criticized by the church. They said his songs the integrity of what this event is all about. I think sounded like something you would hear in a saloon. they did. It was fun. It was very exciting, especially Can you imagine saying that about “A Mighty exciting to have Glen Campbell, a person outside Fortress Is Our God?” Probably one of the biggest our circle but who had roots in the church, host the changes in the Dove Awards and the GMA has been show. the change from ensembles to Q: Throughout your career, you and your wife, soloists. When Gloria, have been a significant source of inspiration Elvis came along, and guidance for countless artists in Christian and rock and roll music. You’ve also presented numerous awards came along, there throughout the history of the Doves, including was a shift to presenting Gloria with Songwriter of the Year in soloists. TV was 1986. Was that an exciting moment for you? becoming bigger and the visual A: Anytime you talk about Bill Gaither and writing, was so important. it’s got to be Bill and Gloria. There wouldn’t have I grew up in the been any songs after “He Touched Me” if not for audio world, but Gloria, it’s just that simple. I was able to write some by the 70s and
80s, more and more people were getting music through their eyes. Amy Grant was a teenager with a great heart, a lot of integrity, and people said, hey, this is refreshing. The spotlight didn’t come in on an ensemble, it came in on a personality. Steve Taylor’s performance was probably pretty bizarre for the time, but it had personality. Q: You’ve had a close, and often hilarious, friendship with Mark Lowry over the years. The two of you have presented together a number of times and have performed together on the Dove Awards stage with the Gaither Vocal Band. What’s your favorite on-stage Dove Awards moment with Mark? A: There’s too many to narrow it down. Mark is always so unpredictable. He’s so unfiltered, he’ll just say it. The great thing Mark did not just for the Dove Awards but for the Christian community, was say, you’re all taking yourselves way too seriously. He did a great job of simply saying, loosen up saints! Let’s take God seriously, but we’re taking ourselves way too seriously. God is in control and knows what’s going on here. In the meantime, let’s have a good time doing what we’re doing. Was he like that all the time? No, absolutely not. He’s a serious thinker. You don’t come up with “Mary, Did You Know” without being a pretty serious thinker. But God uses clowns and serious thinkers, both. Q: The 1994 awards show included a memorable performance of you, Jake Hess, Vestal Goodman, Mark Lowry, Armond Morales, Larnelle Harris and Michael English performing “I Bowed On My Knees.” Tell us how that special moment came about. A: You show me a person that doesn’t know where he’s been and I’ll show you a person who doesn’t know where he’s going. One of the great tragedies in our culture is we don’t have a good perspective on what happened before. We think anything we come up with is new and no one’s thought of it before. But we can only plan for the future by looking at what happened in the past. It’s also true in music. It’s one of the reasons I started the Homecoming Series, never thinking it would be a series. I thought it was just a wonderful opportunity to honor some people who went way ahead of any of us, driving in cars all night, no tour buses back then, out there shaking hands and sharing the good news all over the country. Some of those people had been forgotten. Jake Hess was one of them. He was the originator of The Imperials. Michael English had just come on the scene and I told Jake, you need to be singing next to Michael. Vestal was another one. I told her she needed to be a part of this. I wanted it to be a special moment to honor the past while looking forward to the future. There were a lot of young people who said, I never knew who Vestal Goodman was! That’s a tragedy. I’ve always felt like
we need to do a better job of honoring our roots. The motivation for that moment was, keep writing new songs, keep being creative, but not at the expense of forgetting what got us here. Q: In 1974, you won Song of the Year for “Because He Lives” and then, 41 years later in 2015, you performed with Matt Maher for his version of the same song. Tell us about that full circle moment. A: It was very encouraging. We all write our songs, Gloria and I have written over 700 songs, but very little of what we have written will stick to the wall. That’s true of any writer, including the great hymn writer Fanny Crosby. She wrote over 6,000 poems and we sing maybe four or five of them. A writer is lucky if he has one or two songs that stick to the wall. To stand up with there with Matt, me the old person and him a young man, was quite an honor. And to learn what a deep, philosophical person and deep thinker he is. I’m very encouraged by what’s going on right now in Christian music. With a 50-year view, some of these kids have a much better philosophical and theological base than artists from the early days, and Matt’s a good example. Q: Over the last 50 years, Christian music genres have certainly changed and grown in exciting and sometimes unexpected ways. Was there a moment from a past Dove Awards that surprised you? A: Not really, because I think for the people who try to put God in a box, they’re gonna be disappointed all the time. If you put God in a box, He ain’t gonna stay there very long. He springs out in all kinds of creative ways. For that I’m extremely grateful. Watching how Christian music has grown and changed, I haven’t been surprised. To try and artistically put God in a box, save your breath. You can’t get away from God. Q: Praise & Worship music has shifted, too, throughout the years. What was previously seen as music for the church hymnal is now a thriving genre with artists like Hillsong UNITED, Bethel Music and Elevation Worship. What’s it been like for you to watch worship music grow into what it is today? A: Let me say this to the old people. Loosen up! God is alive and He’s gonna jump out in all different kinds of creative expressions. Some you make like and some you may not like, but be open. Don’t be close minded. Let me say to the kids, don’t be arrogant in thinking God can only speak through something that has been created in this last year or
two. I remember in ‘87 or ’88, I was on a panel at Estes Park. A question was asked of a punk rocker, this guy who had green and orange and yellow hair, what do you think about current Contemporary Christian Music? He said the problem was that it wasn’t contemporary. I said, wait a minute, this man is exactly right. In a year or two, something labeled contemporary won’t have that label anymore. It’s crazy for us to hang our hat on any genre. Genres come and go. Styles come and go. The message is gonna stay the same. Don’t miss it. Q: You’ve won more than 30 Dove Awards over the last 50 years. Is there one award that holds special significance for you? A: I don’t think anybody writes a song or does a record and says, man, I’m gonna get an award for this. I think real artists write songs out of their guts and sing them every night out of their guts, whether anyone else hears them or not, they’ll sing them because it’s something they have to do. But we’d all be lying if we didn’t say that a group of peers saying what we’ve created is good and deserving of an honor, if we said that’s not important, we’d be lying. We have to say thank you, I did this not for acclaim but because it’s what I believe in my guts. Q: You’ve been a dream collaborator for so many artists over the last 50 years. Is there an artist you’d consider to be your dream collaborator? A: I haven’t worked with him, but I think a real thinker and dreamer and survivor is TobyMac. I have not done a lot of things with him but he’s pretty amazing. And Bart Millard, what a heart, what an unbelievable voice. The Casting Crowns kids. Kirk Franklin. Matt Maher. You know, I hate segregation on any level, especially musically, between young and old. The last prayer Jesus prayed in John 17 was, Father may they be one. Stylistically, we may never be one. But spirit wise and intent, we have to be one. That’s a prayer from Jesus. Music should not be a divisive element, even though it can be. We need more bridges. Someone asked me recently what I’d want people to say about me after I’m dead and gone. I’d want them to say, “He was a bridge. He brought people together.”

ERNIE HAASE & SIGNATURE SOUND Since 2003, GRAMMY® nominated and GMA Dove Award winning group Ernie Haase & Signature Sound have traveled the world offering energy, excitement and encouragement through its powerful brand of gospel music. One of the most celebrated quartets in Southern Gospel History, EHSS is mentioned with the same trailblazing reverence as groups like The Statesmen Quartet and The Cathedral Quartet. EHSS has sung to millions worldwide from concerts in Latvia and India to South Africa and New Zealand, TV appearances on ESPN with NASCAR, multiple NBA appearances singing our National Anthem, and even a specialty tour of historic American theaters in support of the EHSS Broadway project.
GAITHER VOCAL BAND
SOUTHERN GOSPEL
ARTIST OF THE YEAR
The Gaither Vocal Band has taken their songs across all 50 United States and around the world. They have performed to sold out crowds in the world’s most prestigious concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Australia’s Sydney Opera House, The Kennedy Center and David’s Citadel in Jerusalem; from orphanages in South Africa to the White House, from Hawaii’s beaches and the rugged terrain of Alaska to the packed stadiums of Billy Graham Crusades in America’s largest cities. But the musical legacy of the Gaither Vocal Band cannot be solely defined by large crowds, or albums sold or even its longevity. The ingredients for success have also been in the songs they’ve performed and by those who have contributed their world-class voices and talents to the group, year after year. Over the years the group evolved, the personnel changed and each new talented singer brought with him a quality that redefined the group, winning them multiple GMA Dove Awards and GRAMMY® awards along the way for their intricate harmonies, great songs, high vocal standards and a genuine passion for communicating the good news at the highest level possible. The group is currently comprised of Bill Gaither, Wes Hampton, Todd Suttles, Adam Crabb and Reggie Smith.
JASON CRABB Jason Crabb has been honored with two GRAMMY® awards and 22 GMA Dove Awards along with a host of industry honors and recognitions. He is the youngest member to be inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, and his hometown of Beaver Dam, KY recognized him by naming a street as Jason Crabb Drive. Since his first solo release in 2009, Jason Crabb has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious stages including Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, the Brooklyn Tabernacle and Billy Graham’s final crusade in NYC. Whatever the Road, Jason’s 2015 release, was nominated for a GRAMMY® for Best Contemporary Christian Album and his latest release, Unexpected, won a GRAMMY® in February 2019. The project was produced by Jay DeMarcus (Rascal Flatts) and features Gary LeVox (Rascal Flatts) and Kaya Jones, as well as a song written with disco icon, Gloria Gaynor.
JOSEPH HABEDANK Daywind recording artist Joseph Habedank is a GRAMMY® nominated, GMA Dove Award winning singer/songwriter and Singing News Magazine’s Soloist of the Year (2018, 2017). For ten years, he served first as baritone, then as the lead singer for one of Southern Gospel’s favorite family groups, the Perrys, and shared his songs in some of America’s greatest churches and venues, including the Brooklyn Tabernacle, Charles Stanley’s First Baptist Atlanta, The Grand Ole Opry, and the historic Ryman Auditorium. On the heels of his critically-acclaimed debut solo release, “Welcome Home,” he was awarded Singing News Magazine’s New Soloist of the Year. He’s written songs recorded by Reba McEntire (“Sing It Now”), The Booth Brothers, Brian Free & Assurance, Karen Peck & New River, The Hoppers, Ivan Parker, Jeff & Sheri Easter, and many more. He was also nominated for Singing News Magazine’s Male Vocalist of the Year, Lead Singer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for three consecutive years.
KAREN PECK & NEW RIVER The voice of Gospel Music Hall of Fame member Karen Peck Gooch is unmistakable. Karen, with her popular trio New River, has enjoyed five GRAMMY® nominations as well as six GMA Dove Awards. Racking up 18 No. 1 hits including “Four Days Late,” which was named Song of the decade for 2000-2010 by The Singing News, the group has appeared on such prestigious stages as The Grand Ole Opry and Gaither Homecoming concerts. Evolving throughout the past three decades, Karen Peck & New River has firmly established a place at the forefront of Southern Gospel Music. They continue to deliver a progressive sound that is distinctive yet remains true to the traditional styling that has made them a fan favorite.
