We’re proud to partner with GMA and its efforts to promote Christian music and ministry around the world. In 2013, GMA became one of Lipscomb’s companies-in-residence and established home offices on the university campus. Its annual Dove Awards show is held each year in the university’s 5,500-seat Allen Arena, creating a unique opportunity for

students to be part of a globalscale production. GMA is even partnering with our graduate studies programs in the arts, promoting a new generation of believer artists in music, film, theater and more. A thank you to all those who join us in supporting GMA. And to all of those honored tonight, congratulations!

Over the years, some of Christian music’s brightest stars have come to Lipscomb. Including the GMA itself.

We have faith in your future.

• GMA History •

••• The Gospel Music Association (GMA) was founded in 1964 by leading southern gospel music industry executives for the purpose of promoting, encouraging, supporting and developing gospel, religious, and sacred music. The group of four men and one woman who formed the GMA in 1964 did so out of a concern for a fragmented industry badly in need of cohesion. James Blackwood, J.D. Sumner, Cecil Blackwood, Dorothy Pate, and Donald W. Butler, Sr. intended the GMA to be a centralized resource center where those interested in the gospel music industry could obtain information about, among other things, artists, record companies and publishers. According to the official Charter of Incorporation, this group of southern gospel music industry executives formed the organization “For the purpose of the promotion of music generally, and the promoting, encouraging, supporting, developing, and dissemination of gospel, religious, spiritual and sacred music, and to approve, encourage, and endorse gospel music, conventions, concerts, programs, recordings, sheet music, hymnals, orchestration, arrangements, television and radio shows and productions, and other means of bringing gospel music before the public.” Originally established as a 501c(3) “public benefit” organization, over the years the GMA began to operate more like a “mutual benefit” trade organization. In 2003, the GMA Board of Directors decided to separate the “public benefit” activities from the “mutual benefit” activities by forming a new organization. The result is that the GMA Trade Organization and the GMA Foundation have differing missions and each is governed by its own Board of Directors, although operated by the same staff.

Almost 300,000 women die each year in developing countries because of complications due to pregnancy. Without a mother, many children die as well. Eighty percent of these deaths are preventable with resources that are available right now in the developing world.

The question is: will you help?

In The Mother & Child Project: Raising Our Voices for Health and Hope, the voices and insights of

influential leaders such as Rachel Held Evans, Christine Caine, Jennifer Nettles, Amy Grant and more come together to provide a personal yet fact-based narrative exploring the plight of women and children living in extreme poverty.

Hope Through Healing Hands, founded and chaired by Senator Bill Frist, MD, invites you to join our Faith-Based Coalition for Healthy Mothers and Children Worldwide. Pastors, Artists, Non-Profit Leaders, Academics, Athletes, and Actors have raised their voices for health and hope with awareness and advocacy for maternal, newborn, and child health.

I began to cry after about five minutes of reading, and didn’t stop till I put the book down, equal parts heartbreak and gratitude-heartbreak because I’m a mom, and the realities that mothers and children experience globally are unspeakable and gratitude for the brave and intelligent people that God is using to right these wrongs. A hopeful, important, inspiring book. - Shauna Niequist,

Author of Savor and Bread & Wine
