Somebody once said: “The joy of surfing is so many things combined, from the physical exertion of it, to the challenge, to the mental side of the sport.” Kiri Thode is embracing all those factors on his way to the top of the surfing ranks. He is making quite a name for himself by consistently staying in the top 3 world ranking, something only a talented few have done before him. Go Weekly caught Kiri on a high wave in Bonaire and discussed his career and his future in and out of the water. By: Hayson Nicholls | Photography: Roëlton Thodé
Catch a Wave Kiri Thode Who is this surfer dude everybody is talking about? "I come from a family of fishermen, we have always been attached to the sea. My older cousin Tonky Frans was the one who introduced me to the world of windsurfing. From the first time I got on a board I knew that this was something I wanted to do forever. My other cousin Tati Frans was also a big influence on my career. Both of them played a major role in my development."

In all those years windsurfing you have won many prizes. Which one is the most special one till now? "Definitely my World Championship prize in 2013 from PWA (Professional Windsurfing Association). Because I competed against the best surfers in the world. I would like to win a few others of course. Still I am very proud that I hold the record for the most tricks in the least amount of time in the freestyle category."
How long have you been practicing windsurfing?
Besides your cousins, who else do you look up to?
"I have been doing it for 21 years already. Since I was 5 years old."

perfecting my skills. Getting better each day by learning from my mistakes. So I had no time to look up to anybody. I always strived to become the best."
What is your discipline in windsurfing? "My discipline is freestyle. It has been like that since I became a pro in 2003 at the age of 13. The freedom to do your own thing on the water is unbelievable. The adrenaline rush to do as many great tricks as possible within 6 minutes is something out of this world."
What feeling do you get when you are on the water? "I feel attached to the water. My board, my sail, the water and I become one."
What do you do when you are not windsurfing? "I love everything that contains speed. I am an adrenaline junkie. I do drag races in Aruba, I have a bunch of scooters and quads too. I love the bike life. Tati and Tonky both literally steered me in the world of speed."
Do you still compete against Tati and Tonky? "Almost every competition. Outside of the water we are the best of friends, but as soon as we hit the water it becomes a competition and it’s every man for himself. I still think it’s funny when I win because they used to be my teachers and now I am surpassing them in a way."
What is up next for Kiri? "In July of this year I will be going to a freestyle competition in Spain. I will be in Germany competing in the end of September also. Besides windsurfing I am working on different projects, because I realized that this will not last forever. I might break a leg or even grow tired of the sport. So I need something else to hold on to. I am gaining a lot of advice from people in the business world as to what I can do best. I want to make a brand out of my name. I think I’ll be windsurfing professionally for about 6 more years. After that I will be venturing into my other passions."

Art Rules Curaçao is just one month away and the program confirmed to have already accepted almost 100 students. Kicking off on July 25th Art Rules Curaçao is close to its 3rd edition set to take place at Kura di Arte. In the past few months the organization has been working hard to put together yet an other extraordinary team of educators from around the world, which includes the names of Choreographer, Performer and Yu di Korsou Faizah Grootens, Rihanna’s background singer Gloria Ry’ann and Legendary Poet Black Ice who is teaching this years newest workshop Creative Writing. Art Rules also makes history in this edition by introducing a former student as one of the teachers. DJ Krokkz, also known as one of Curaçao most popular DJ’s blowing up in the party scene will join New York’s HOT 97 DJ Jazzy Joyce in the DJ workshop.
