IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE AND PRIDE THAT WE BRING YOU DETAILS OF GPAC’S 2012 ALCOA THEATRE SEASON IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DEAKIN UNIVERSITY. Each year as we look across the country to find the best productions – diversity, quality, great storytelling, light and shade are always on our minds. Each year, as the juggling of artists, theatres and dollars shapes the season, one question we always ask ourselves: is this the most fantastic season yet? From my point of view I believe the nine productions that make up the 2012 season may quite possibly be just that. We will be off to an exceptional start, celebrating 200 years of Charles Dickens, with the magnificent award winning Miriam Margolyes, portraying 23 of his finest characters in Dickens’ Women. She will leave you spellbound. Then you will witness the remarkable Helen Morse explore the mystery of memory in Sundowner. Her performance will tear at your heart.

And we look forward to an amazing finale with Rachael Beck and Jessica Rowe celebrating one of the world’s greatest music theatre artists in Side By Side By Sondheim. And so much more: this fantastic season of wonderful performers and storytelling, from family relationships to office culture and romance, is hard to beat. But you be the judge. We are giving you the opportunity to be uplifted, challenged and to laugh and cry, so make sure you do not miss one of these truly fantastic productions.

Jill Smith General Manager

Colin Friels is also joining us to lead the cast in a modern classic, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman - a Victorian exclusive! Our finest performers in this classic of our times from one of our most acclaimed theatre companies, Belvoir.

DICKENS’ WOMEN

BAFTA®-award winning actress Miriam Margolyes returns to Australia for an encore of her one-woman tour-deforce, Dickens’ Women. Dickens’ Women brings to life twenty-three of Charles Dickens’ most engaging and colourful female (and male!) characters. Margolyes, well-known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter movies and the hispanic nurse in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, presents her powerful, comprehensive, and at times hilarious exposé of Dickens, his writing, and the real-life women who found themselves immortalised in his books. This strictly limited season is part of the worldwide celebrations of 200 years of Charles Dickens in 2012. Don’t miss your chance to see one of the world’s most acclaimed character actors bring to life many characters from the pen of the world’s best character writer. SUNDOWNER The realm of memory remains a great mystery.

“It’s the strangest thing. No longer being able to tell what is the past and what is the present. It seems that events that took place only minutes ago are now being erased while memories I have been able to hold at bay for decades suddenly come rushing towards me.” Through the eyes of three generations Sundowner tells the story of so many Australian families, using theatrical expression, dance and physicality. If a loved one starts to lose their memories, what role can we play in holding on to them? And how can we care for them in the present while honouring their memory? Sundowner is a story of lament and at times, grief and sorrow. Ultimately though, it is a story of love: love of family, love of history and love of life. Cast: Helen Morse, Gerard Van Dyck, Michelle Heaven, Stuart Christie plus the Tivoli Lovelies Vicki Charleston, Verlie Whittaker, Jackie O’Neil, Dot Lanphier and Lil Paranos. SYNCOPATION By Allan Knee

Henry Ribolow is a Jewish meatpacker obsessed with becoming a ballroom dancer and is desperately seeking a dance partner. Anna Bianchi, an Italian Catholic seamstress, is unsatisfied with her life until she spots a curious ad in the paper: “Give your life a lift. Wanted: A dance partner to dance for royalty.” From the moment Anna summons up the courage to reply, sparks fly. When Anna and Henry take their first steps together, they embark on a journey that will transform their lives. They dance urged on by the jazzy rhythms and haunting melodies of Gershwin, Joplin and Berlin. Henry and Anna soar in amazing ballroom routines, their steps and lives growing in perfect syncopation. This heart-warming production is choreographed by Dancing with the Stars’ Mark Hodge, under the direction of Broadway’s Tony Award-nominated Stephen Lloyd Helper. STOP. REWIND by Melissa Bubnic

Stop. Rewind charts the lives of seven workers in a local government office. A colleague’s death forces them to reassess their lives, their choices and their goals. Melissa Bubnic writes triumphantly about the compromise of vitality and the erosion of dreams. Stop. Rewind is funny, but not lightweight. It’s a comedy that beautifully balances light and dark. It cleverly exposes the unspoken private thoughts that people have in delicate situations. Do you bite your tongue and suppress pent-up emotions, or do you speak your mind and reveal yourself? Red Stitch’s new comedy shows us both options, with hilarious and poignant consequences. A Critical Stages and Finucane & Smith Production

THE FLOOD by Jackie Smith

The sheep farm is dilapidated. The farm house, dark and squalid by the river, shelters an old mad lady and her isolated hard-drinking daughter. Memories are seeping through the floorboards. As the sun sets, the flood waters rise. Then the screen door bangs open in the rain and wind: Catherine has returned after twenty years. The past is here. Fuelled by alcohol and uncertain memories of a long-dead father, the estranged sisters are trapped in mesmerising friction by their mother and a past no-one wants to remember. This electrifying and disturbing work bristles with dark humour and edge-of-the-seat performances. The Flood is startlingly authentic writing, plunging audiences into a web of family intrigue set against a haunting Australian landscape. BIDDIES by Don Reid

Five ordinary women, each a marvel in their own way, find themselves back in the infants’ school classroom after years of separation, plying their needles in a good old-fashioned session of “stitch and bitch”. Their confessions are frank, their rivalries intense and their jokes outrageous. They discover a common frustration with the limitations of being mature and female in a world still largely defined by men. Accidentally locked in the classroom, with nothing but their ingenuity, Adora Cream Wafers and a bucket to get them through the crisis, unknown reserves come shining through. They rediscover their capacity to love, forgive - and take control. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! From the writer of Codgers...now it’s time to hear from the ladies. You’ll laugh till you cry. Move over Codgers, the Biddies are in town... DEATH OF A SALESMAN by Arthur Miller

Will you take that phoney dream and burn it before something happens? Willy Loman is feeling his age. He and his wife Linda are struggling to make their mortgage repayments. The company he works for is branching out in new directions and it looks like he’s about to be left behind. When his university drop-out son, Biff, moves back home after years of drifting, old tensions rise to the surface. Arguably the greatest play of the Twentieth Century, Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman is about a man’s need to hold on to his dreams even when they have been proven false and destructive. One of Australia’s most loved award-winning stars of stage and screen, Colin Friels tackles the role of a lifetime in Simon Stone’s powerful new interpretation on this timeless masterpiece from Belvoir, one of Australia’s most innovative and acclaimed theatre companies. An electrifying multi-media play drawing on real-life experiences of photographers and correspondents, Bare Witness catapults us into the world’s combat zones, challenging the way we view humanity through the fragmenting lens of the media. This award-winning play integrates fluid movement, live sound design and animated projections with striking originality. ARTS FOR LIFE - THE GPAC ENDOWMENT FUND WHAT WILL ARTS FOR LIFE ACHIEVE?

HOW TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT

Arts for Life will ensure GPAC remains a centre where our children first experience the performing arts; a centre which nurtures local emerging artists; and a centre where both Australian and the world’s finest artists continue to perform on our stages.

Arts for Life aims to raise $10 million to be built up over 10 years. There are three principle ways to make a donation to the fund:

Additional income through Arts for Life will give the centre the opportunity to confidently plan and build the artistic programs. These include: • Support for the development of emerging artists, education programs and new cultural activities across the Arts Precinct • Increased access for schools, community groups, organisations, and independent producers wishing to present performances at GPAC • A greater number of performances by leading Australian and international artists across the performing arts

1. A Bequest If, once you have remembered your family, you also have the capacity to invest in your community then a bequest - a provision in your will - is the perfect legacy to acknowledge the pleasure you have received from your involvement with GPAC over the years. Such a bequest would normally take the form of a nominated dollar amount or as a percentage of your estate. This is a very personal decision and should only be made after discussion with those assisting you with the drafting of your will. 2. A once-off significant donation Once-off significant donations could be in cash, a gift of shares, proceeds from a life insurance policy or a realisable asset. These significant donations could also be made as a bequest. 3. Annual giving Every donation received assists GPAC in the delivery of its annual artistic program. All donations over $2 are tax deductible as GPAC is registered as a deductible gift recipient (DGR).
