From the
Rise Up This month Christians all over the world celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We traced the steps and events that led to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. We remembered the seven last utterances of Jesus from the cross. We told the story of how Jesus died on the cross on Friday, how he was buried in a borrowed tomb and how on the third day, early Sunday morning, he rose from the dead with all power in his hands. Christians declared that Jesus Christ got up from the grave with all power in his hands. Resurrection Sunday is a reminder to every believer that we also possess resurrection power. We call this the ‘Good News’ of Jesus Christ! As believers, can you imagine a life without Jesus? What would life be like if Jesus had not got up from the grave? It would be a life without hope. We would be most miserable. In the times of trouble we would not be able to go to the throne of God boldly with our petitions. And more important, we would not have Jesus sitting at the right hand of God as our intercessor pleading our case to the Almighty God. But, because he lives, we have hope and we have a peace that the world does not understand. But the story does not stop there. We as believers have the responsibility to keep the story alive. As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ there will be many who will not be celebrating because they are not aware of the ‘Good News’. It would be a shame if we as believers did not take this awesome opportunity to share the ‘Good News’ with non-believers. This is the perfect season to give those who are without hope a hope. This is the perfect time to let those who walk in darkness know that Jesus is the light of the world. Someone needs to know that Jesus came so that we would be able to live life victoriously. Someone needs to know today that Jesus is our Savior, and that today is their day of salvation. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13
Jackie Epps Editor-in-Chief No matter what happens in life or whatever knocks us off our feet, we have the power to get up again. We have resurrection power on the inside. Resurrection power can be seen in believers’ lives through their faith. The Bible tells us that faith in a believer’s life is “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1) In everyone’s life, there are things that we constantly hope for. We hope for better lives for our families, financial security, good health, etc. In fact, we live each day in some form of anticipation or hope. There is something that motivates us to believe for those things that we hope for. That something is our faith—it is our faith that motivates us each day to keep pressing forward reaching for our hopes and dreams. How awesome it would be to share the ‘Good News’ during this season with our brothers and sisters and see their lives be changed by the salvation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. &
with IEESHA
G&G: Ieesha, welcome back to Grace & Glory! April is National Donate Life Month and we are excited for the opportunity to shine a light on organ donation. You are the Manager of Community Outreach for The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland. Would Ieesha Johnson, Manager of Community Outreach, you tell us about The Living Legacy Foundation this organization? Ieesha: Thanks so much for this opportunity! The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland is a non-profit health service organization that saves and enhances lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation. As the organ procurement organization for Maryland, we facilitate donation and transplantation in area hospitals, provide donor family support, and educate about the life-saving power of donation. We are passionate about our mission of saving lives while honoring the legacy and generosity of donors. G&G: Ieesha, since this is National Donate Life Month, let’s start with some research that I have read. I read that AfricanAmericans are the least likely to participate in organ donation, that the percentage of Caucasian donors are much higher. What would you attribute this disparity to, is it just a lack of knowledge and/or fear?
8 8 April April 2019 2019 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory
JOHNSON
Ieesha: That’s a great question, and I think the answer is both a lack of knowledge and fear. In our work in the community, we find that myths and misconceptions about donation, and are everywhere. Medical mistrust is common and not without historical justification, but in today’s world, myths such as “they won’t save me if I’m an organ donor,” are just not true AND they are costing us the lives of our family and friends on the transplant waiting list. G&G: With this being National Donate Life Month, this is certainly a good time to shed some light on frequently asked questions about organ donation. My first question is who can become an organ or tissue donor and is there an age limit to be an organ donor? Ieesha: Anyone can become an organ, eye, or tissue donor! We always tell people, never rule yourself out. There is no age limit to saving lives. We have seen all ages give the gift of life, from infants to senior citizens. G&G: Can you become an organ donor if you already have existing medical issues, like diabetes, hypertension, etc.? Ieesha: Absolutely. This is a myth we hear a lot, that someone thinks they are too sick to become a donor. But the truth is that each potential donor will be evaluated at their time of death. With recent medical advancements, even people who are HIV+ can give the gift of life! G&G: Which organs and tissues can be donated after death? Ieesha: One organ donor can save up to eight lives through the gift of their kidneys, lungs, liver, heart, pancreas, and intestines. One tissue donor can enhance more than 75 lives through the gifts of their corneas, bone, skin, tendons, heart valves, and veins. These tissues can restore health and save lives. G&G: How are organs and tissues for transplantation obtained
Q&A and distributed? How is a potential organ recipient identified? Ieesha: Organ and tissue recovery is performed only after the donor has been legally declared dead by a physician and is a very respectful surgical procedure. Matching organs to potential recipients is done through a computer matching system run by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) that takes into account factors such as blood type, size, and time waiting. Recipients are placed on the transplant waiting list by working with their doctor. G&G: Do donor families and recipients remain anonymous? Ieesha: Yes, at the time of transplant, only basic details such as age and general location are disclosed to the recipients and donor families. If the families choose to do so, we work with them to write to each other and eventually meet. G&G: Ieesha, does a person’s heritage, social, or financial status play any part in whether or not they will receive an organ if they ever need one? Ieesha: Definitely not. This is another myth we hear a lot! Race, income, celebrity, financial or social status are never considered when matching recipients. A great example of this is Dick Cheney – he waited for 20 months before he received his heart transplant. G&G: Do I have to be registered as an organ and tissue donor to have my organs donated? How does one become an organ donor? Ieesha: While you don’t have to be registered for your family to authorize donation after your death, we always recommend that anyone who wants to become a donor register their wishes and have that discussion with their family. You can register at the MVA or online at www.donatelifemaryland. org. If you don’t feel comfortable registering, you should at least make sure that your family knows you want to become a donor. G&G: Ieesha, if I register to be a donor, will a hospital still try as hard to save my life, or will being a declared organ donor (to donate after my death) affect the care I receive in a hospital? Ieesha: Another myth! Your donor designation status will never impact the care you receive in the hospital. Your health is the top priority of hospital staff – they are working to save YOUR life. The teams who work on organ donation are completely separate from the hospital team attending to patients. Organ donation is not about trading one life for another, it’s about giving the gift of life after you are gone. G&G: If I don’t register to be a donor, can my organs still be donated? Who would be able to give consent on my behalf?
Ieesha: Yes, you can still become a donor if you are not registered. We always have a conversation with the family, regardless of the patient’s donor status. We identify the next of kin and talk with that person and the family about the opportunity to donate and give life to another. Our team of Family Service Coordinators are trained grief support professionals and are there to support the family regardless of the donation decision. G&G: What are the different ways to identify yourself as an organ donor? Ieesha: We recommend that anyone who wishes to become an organ donor register themselves at the MVA by saying “yes” or by going to www.donatelifemaryland.org and registering online. Be sure to share your wishes with your family, as well. G&G: What organs can be donated by a living donor? Ieesha: Most people know that you can donate a kidney, but you can also donate a portion of a liver! It’s truly amazing. Right now, almost 97% of people waiting for a transplant in Maryland are waiting for a kidney or liver – which means that if more people stepped up to be living donors, we could save those lives right here in our community. G&G: Why is it important for people of every race, background, community, etc. to become an organ donor? Ieesha: So glad you asked this question! It is so important for everyone, but especially African-Americans, to become organ donors. While donation and transplantation can occur between any two people from different racial backgrounds, transplants are more successful when organs are matched between people of the same background. The more AfricanAmerican organ donors there are, the more African-American lives that can be saved. In 2018, African-Americans made up 20% of those who received transplants, but only 16% of the total organ donors. There is a great need right now, but not enough donors, and we all need to do our part to save lives. G&G: Ieesha, lastly, how can people help the cause? Ieesha: There are many ways! First and foremost is making sure you are a registered donor and then sharing your wishes with your family. We are also very excited about a grant opportunity specifically for houses of worship and faith-based organizations. We are awarding grants of up to $1,000 to these organizations to carry out activities that would increase education and donor designations for organ, eye, and tissue donation in Maryland. Please encourage your church to apply and take part in saving lives through donation!

The Ultimate Gift For Latrice Price, Community Outreach Coordinator for The Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland, promoting education and awareness for organ, eye, and tissue donation isn’t just a job - it’s a purpose. When asked for the one-word reason why she supports donation, her answer is simple: religion. “All religions believe in the act of giving,” she says. “It is the ultimate gift of compassion.” Latrice works closely with clergy and the faith community to make sure that people understand the truth about organ donation and the impact it has on recipients in need.
Did You Know? Over 3,400 men, women, and children in Maryland currently need a life-saving organ transplant.
One organ donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and enhance more than 75 lives through tissue donation.
“Love your neighbor as yourself...” (Mark 12:31)

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)
In eternity, we will not need our earthly bodies. “He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5) “We can enter Heaven without having every part of our bodies present.” (Mark 9:47)
Every ten minutes another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list.
An average of 20 people die nationally each day from the lack of available organs for transplant.

to your good health
Spring is here. The trees, flowers, bushes and animals are all showing signs
of new life. The cherry blossoms are blooming, the birds are singing and the sound of baseballs and bats are in the air. Nature is letting us know that we have an opportunity to grow and expand our view of what we can accomplish with a new and fresh outlook. With everything that has been going on in some of our lives, having fresh and new experiences is just what is needed to be refreshed, refocused and renewed.
One of the ways that you and I can seize the opportunity to change and grow
is to forget the season that just ended and embrace the season we are in now. Many times we let the past dictate our future instead of letting the past propel us into our future. Growing from the past experiences that are good or bad is possible when we view them with a fresh perspective. The Prophet Isaiah shares this message to encourage us when we are faced with a new opportunity, “The Lord says, “Forget what happened before, and do not think about the past. Look at the new thing I am going to do. It is already happening. Don’t you see it? I will make a road in the desert and rivers in the dry land.” Isaiah 43:18-19 (NCV.
Another key to seizing new opportunities is to realize there is no need to
wait. The new thing that we have been looking for is happening now. We are often looking for what’s next and as a result we miss what is happening now. Now is the time we can make changes, create new vision or fulfill our purpose. There is no need to wait for a better time. Now is the best time to take advantage of all that you have been putting off because of doubt and fear. If not now, when will you move forward and take the steps to embrace the new thing God is planning for your life? It is time to see what God sees and to do what God’s calling you to do. Seizing opportunity is seeing God at work and joining in the work to accomplish the vision that God has prepared for your life. Do not let this change in seasons pass you by. The change you seek is within reach. You just have to take hold of it. 18 April 2019 | Grace&Glory

woman’s perspective
Greetings my sister! This month I want to begin a series. It’s been a while since I did a series with you our wonderful readers, but I think it’s about that time. On my podcast I have recently started discussing purpose and talking about it from many different angles. As I was preparing for that podcast I posted a question on my Facebook page out of curiosity. I asked them “what keeps people from walking in purpose?” The responses that I got were surprising and not surprising all at the same time. If you had to guess, what do you think was the main response I got? If you said some form of fear, you are absolutely correct. Most of the answers I got were fear. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of rejection. Fear of not knowing where to start. Fear of not having support from family and friends. Fear, fear, fear. Now I wasn’t surprised because I know how common and powerful the stronghold of fear is. But at the same time, I was a little surprised because I thought to myself are we still really letting fear keep us bound? Especially since we know that it is a struggle, but we also know that with God all things are possible, and we have the power to overcome fear. So why is fear still winning? Let me ask you a question my sister, are you struggling with fear? Can you relate to the desire to walk in God’s assignment for your life, yet you haven’t moved because of what you are afraid of? If so I have good news for you, this series is for you. We will take a deep dive into why purpose, how purpose, who purpose, and much more. We will understand who we are in Christ, how we identify our assignment, how to overcome obstacles, how to confidently go into new spaces, how to break out of your comfort zone and so much more. So, this week I want to start with a simple concept, who you are. Do you know who you are? Do you know whose you are? One of the biggest tools of the enemy is an identity crisis. If we don’t see ourselves in the full truth of all that we are, we will live below the standard we were created for.
20 April April 2019 2019 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 20
Genesis 1:26 lets us know that we are created in the image and likeness of God. Did you get that?! We are made in the image and likeness of God. Imagine your child who looks like you, chews like you, has your mannerisms, and imagine that you are made in THAT likeness of God. The same God who looked at the void and darkness and spoke to it made you like Him. Which means that you can also look at the void and dark areas of your life and speak to them until they perform. We serve a God who created the whole world without lifting a finger. He said LET THERE BE, and it was. He was demonstrating for us how we should live. We should live a LET THERE BE life. How many believers do you know that really live like that? Too many of us settle for struggle, worry, concern, and fear, all because we don’t truly understand who we are in God. If we saw ourselves properly we would operate in the power that exists in us. We would realize that the spirit of God lives in us and has given us authority to stand over many of the things that sit on us. Throughout this series we are going to discuss walking in purpose and being a purpose-driven woman from many aspects. My prayer for you is that you will hear God speak. My prayer is that every promise in Heaven for you that you have not claimed you get a desire to go after. My prayer is that you will release fear and walk boldly in the truth of the woman God has created you to be. I will also be discussing this in more depth on my podcast. Feel free to check “The Tiffany Bethea Podcast” out on iTunes, Google Play and Soundcloud. Each week on the show we will continue to uncover what God says about living in your life assignment. Next month here in Grace & Glory we will continue the conversation by talking about overcoming your fears. I can’t wait! Tiffany Bethea Until next month, be blessed. Lady C Speaks
I was listening to a sermon recently from Pastor Steven Furtick, of Elevation Church, and he was talking about invisible prisons. He talked about at times we can make invisible prisons when we feel that God has not met our expectations. In his sermon, he referenced John the Baptist in Matthew 11:2-3. John the Baptist had become discouraged. He was in prison, actual prison, but wanted to get a message to Jesus to ask him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else." At that moment John the Baptist created an invisible prison. Why, because sometimes we can make invisible prisons when we think God should move in the way we expect or like. Listen, there are things, major things and changes happening in my life right now that some of you wouldn't believe. If I told you, you would say, "Oh this sounds like a movie you would see on lifetime." There are still

many moments when I don't understand what God is doing and why, and I am saying, "God where are you?" I know it’s not kosher for a Minister of the gospel who should be FULL of FAITH to say that, but guess what, I did. I not only said it, but I screamed it! I want to share with you something Pastor Steven said. When he said it, it blessed my soul and totally shifted my mindset. He said that at times we are so focused on our own expectation that the Lord really needs us to ZOOM OUT. Once we Zoom out we will see that He has been there all along. I want to place that in your spirit as well! Maybe you are reading this article and like me you screamed, "God where are you?" Beloved, it’s time to ZOOM OUT! Step back and take FULL inventory. Yes, we may have gone through the unthinkable and unimaginable, but He who has begun a good work in you is faithful to perform. (Philippians 1:6) Zoom out and see how He has protected you. Zoom out and see how He has provided for you. Zoom out and see how He has positioned you. I read a daily devotional and the author stated how in this year 2019 we are going from story to glory. Zoom out and stop focusing on the story but rather the glory of the Lord upholding you at a higher standard to make a greater impact. Zoom out! Maybe it’s time for you to let go of your expectation to trust that the God you serve and love, has a greater one. I am not saying not to have expectations, but what I am saying is if God doesn't move in the way you expected, will you believe that there is a greater purpose and a greater plan? I like what Pastor Steven said, "We have to resist the urge to control God!" I never thought about it that way, but I do believe that if I stay in that invisible prison, I will miss God's ultimate plan. Beloved, hear the voice of the Lord, "Blessed is he who allows and welcomes me to be God outside of what they think I should do or act." May the Lord take us from story to glory! ZOOM OUT! In Jesus Name. (Lady C)

Connected to the
King
You established a King Connection the moment you decided to become a part of God’s royal family. This connection linked you to Jesus Christ and gave you access to all of the fringe benefits of His Kingdom. Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection sealed His kingship and gave Him rule in an everlasting Kingdom that you are blessed to be a part of as a seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:29). Searching the Old Testament, you will find that some earlier kings had selfish mindsets, manipulated the people, made major mistakes, and some kings were kind, courageous and humble. Jesus is King of Kings and gives life and life more abundantly (John 10:10). Connecting to this King, gives you an ally, His anointing, and an eternal association with an everlasting empire. Studying the life lessons of the first three kings can be beneficial and boost your relationship in your overall Christian walk. It can lead to a continual and uninterrupted connection to King Jesus. Valuable lessons and lethal experiences from past kings can teach you to avoid disconnects and help you remain connected to the King. If you were to take a look back and examine the first kings of Israel, you would discover that a king connection then was one of forced labor, taking over ownership of your land and flocks, owing a tenth of your grain to the king, and a host of other required tasks (1 Samuel 8:11-18). King Jesus, instead of demanding His dominion on you, wants you to delight in Him and give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). Life lessons from the first kings can help you discover pitfalls to avoid and help you realize the promised potential of following and being connected to the King. The Israelites demanded that the prophet, Samuel, give them a king (I Samuel 8:5). They neglected to realize that God was already their King and leader. It was God’s desire to have a direct connection with His people. The people desired a king that they already possessed in God but overlooked Him. Saul was chosen as Israel’s first king. His kingship teaches us that obedience is better than sacrifice (I Samuel 15:22). His life lesson is that God would rather have our obedience than our sacrifices. King Saul was dethroned and rejected by God for not obeying simple instructions to completely destroy their enemies (1 Samuel 15:26). King David, Israel’s second king, was courageous (I Samuel 17), kind (2 Samuel 9) and forgiving (I Samuel 26). King David challenges you 24 April 2019 | Grace&Glory
to remember that you can do all things through Christ that strengthens you (Philippians 4:13). His life lesson is that God judges from the heart (I Samuel 16:7). King David’s life lesson admonishes you to walk in humility and to always give God the glory (I Samuel 18:15-18). From Him you learn that God does forgive you of your sin when you repent but sin still has consequences (2 Samuel 12:10). His life challenges us to count the cost of all of our actions. King Solomon, Israel’s third king and the son of King David, teaches you to seek wisdom because wisdom comes with a host of good things from the Lord (I Kings 3:9). King Solomon provided a pattern of prayer that includes asking for God’s presence, for His will to be done, help with your daily needs and to spread the news of the Lord to everyone (I Kings 8:56-60). His life lesson also warns you to be mindful of building idols in your lives in the form of people, places, and things that only exist to distract you from fulfilling God’s plan for your life. Going against God’s law, King Solomon married many foreign women that led him away from God (I Kings 11:2). His history admonishes you to realize that even with wisdom, because you are in the flesh, you still require and need God’s help to endure life’s challenges (I Kings 11:3). A connection to King Jesus links you to His lordship and gives you access to his power, protection, and the potential to do exploits. This connection to the King will lead and guide you as you fulfill your purpose with excellence. King Jesus has given you the keys to the Kingdom (Matthew 16:19) and the authority to bind up what is trying to hold you bound, block your connection, and loose everything that is yours as the King’s heir and joint-heir. It is God’s desire that you receive the lion’s share, the biggest and best, in every area of your life. It belongs to you as an heir and joint-heir with Jesus (Romans 8:17). Love After Divorce by Bishop Shirley and Pastor Tim Stanfill
What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate (Matthew 10:9). There was a time when the majority of relationships were based on this scripture. But sadly, divorce is at an all-time high in this day and age. And perhaps it is because so many couples have failed to put and keep God first in their relationship. Finding love again after divorce is not easy. Regardless of the reason for divorce, it is easy to get caught up in the negative emotions often associated with it. For months or sometimes years, those emotions and wounds remain vulnerable and exposed. Whether the reason for divorce was the unexpected loss of a spouse or infidelity - this might lead one to question their faith and focus in God. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” Psalm 46:1-3 This scripture is a reminder that it is precisely during the times that one has the greatest fear and frustration, that one must also have unwavering faith. One cannot take negative memories and experiences from the past and project them on their partner in the present or the future. Pastor Tim and I realized that before we pursued a relationship with each other, we first had to come to a place of forgiveness and peace with our past. This varies from one person to the next and there is no set time for how long it will take for this to happen. Feeling negative about oneself can easily and quickly lead to negative self-talk, poor hygiene, lack of
motivation and neglect in many other aspects. Reading the Bible, praying daily, and attending weekly service will help move the healing process forward. During this time, it’s very important to focus on self-care and self-love. From Day 1, Pastor Tim and I started our relationship by building on God’s word and teachings. We both entered our relationship with undeniable faith, knowing that God had brought us together. And we both gave our word to Him and each other that no matter what we were going through we would live by and through His word - everyday in every way. In searching or attracting a life partner, one must not be led by temptation. A partner should be loving, respectful, and unquestionably share the same love for Him. Pastor Tim and I pray together every morning, night and whenever we feel that we need it. We attend and lead weekly service together. We volunteer together. We travel together. We bring our families together. And we run our businesses together. We believe there is hope for love after divorce. It is simply a matter of putting God first and keeping Him there.

What a Man, What a Man, What a Man. What a mighty good Man. Yes He is!
The God that we serve is a mighty good Man. The Bible reads in John 15:13 that, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” What a statement! I refer to God as a good Man, because He laid down His life for me, for you, for us! And in doing so, He confirmed our relationship status as “friends”, and the best part of it is so that we could have eternal life. There is not a man that I know that would do what Jesus did; the way Jesus did it voluntarily with no assurance that my love for him would be reciprocated to the degree and measure that he poured it out. I believe that I’m married to a wonderful man, Jason Turner, and I know that I was raised by an awesome man, Willie Hines, Sr.; I even have some amazing brothers who have all
shown themselves to be good men. Even though all of these men played an intricate part in my life, poured and continue to pour in immeasurable ways, I still find it hard to believe that they would lay down their lives for a friend or family member. But that’s what’s great about God. He cared so much about us that He saw the bigger picture. He looked beyond the moment and embraced what eternity looked like. He took the love that He has for us to the cross so that we could have life and have it more abundantly. The pain and suffering that He endured for us is overwhelming to think about. Our finite minds are not able to process the extent of the sacrifice that was made on our behalf. God had a plan in affect when man’s plan fell through. Isn’t it just like Him to provide a way out of no way?! When we, as His children fall, He steps in and makes everything better. He does it without judgment or condemnation. What a man. What a Man. What a mighty good Man. So as we are approaching this Easter season, while we are preparing our Easter speeches, our Easter programs, and our Easter ensembles let’s not forget about the cross, and what happened on the cross on our behalf. Let’s remember how good of a Man He was to do what He did and continues to do for us. Pastor Rhoda will be hosting a powerful one day women’s conference, Reflections Women’s Conference in Arizona on June 8th, on picking up the pieces of our broken Pastor Rhoda Turner mirrors and putting Christian Faith Fellowship Church them back together. THOUGHT! Lately I’ve been hearing the adage, “Sin will take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you want to pay.” Believe it or not, the same is true of our thoughts. If allowed, our thoughts will take us further than we need to go, keep us longer than we need to stay, and when acted on, cost us more than we want to pay. There are many enemies we have in life. If I surveyed people asking who they think their enemies are, I can guarantee the majority of the answers would fall under two categories, the devil and other people. One enemy people often miss is the “within-a-ME,” the enemy of our own mind. Of all the wars the world has ever known, no war has been in existence as long as the war of the mind. If we’re going to grow as believers, we must learn the importance of controlling our thoughts; we can’t be “cerebral renegades.” Our thought life is very powerful, it has the potential to move us into success or to drive us to absolute failure. Because of thoughts people reject Christ, lives are destroyed and relationships are cut off. If our thoughts are not trained to consistently draw from God’s Word, then our actions won’t align with the Word because what we think about, we bring about. When my husband and I first married if there was a disagreement, he wanted to “deal with it later” and I needed to talk it out right then and there. After 21 years of marriage I know better now, but back then “deal with it later” meant he wouldn’t address the issue at all. Because I didn’t want to “put him on the corner of the roof,” (Proverbs 25:24) to my frustration, I would leave him alone. Unfortunately, the problem typically escalated because I was left alone with my thoughts and I would have a full-blown confrontation with him in my mind. I allowed my mind to take me further than I needed to go and once I got out there the devil peddled thoughts stronger than my own, “He doesn’t love you…he doesn’t care that you were left to deal with this alone.” I would feed on every word the enemy presented and before I knew it I was in my husband’s face holding an iron skillet, ready to let him have it. We argued over all kinds of “important” things like who should have killed a centipede crawling on the 28 April 2019 | Grace&Glory
kitchen wall! It’s comical now, but back then it wasn’t. This is a simple example, but the examples can be much more extreme for people sometimes. God doesn’t want negative thoughts cluttering our mind. He wants us to “cast down” or eradicate those thoughts. When we don’t, we act out in ways inconsistent with who we are in Christ. “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5) Casting down in the Greek means “to throw down with force,” like a king who has been dethroned, or a wrestler who is violently slammed to the ground by his opponent. The Word of God is the muscle we use to bring our thoughts to the obedience of Christ. By using the Word of God we replace our thoughts, and any other thoughts, with God’s. Instead of thinking the worst, the Word helps us think the best. “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8) Let the Word of God work in your life! Whenever you find yourself in the middle of a mental battle, wait for the Word to rise up. It’s on the way. I like what Joyce Meyer said, “You’ve got another think coming”, so wait for it. Don’t act on the negative; the positive always comes, if you give place to the Word of God in your life. Today, you may have marvelous opportunities to let your mind “take off.” Don’t Do It! Put the weight of the Word on your mind, act on what you see in God’s Word and you’ll come out winning God’s way! health matters
You may have heard family members talking about “Big Mama” and her “sugar level”. You may have known family members that were admitted to the hospital and mysteriously returned home with an amputated toe or leg. Some members of the family may have confessed to having “a little sugar”. But, no one ever discussed what was truly happening to these loved ones. No one gave a clear explanation of what this “sugar” condition was. Diabetes mellitus (DM), or “sugar” diabetes as some may refer to it, is a chronic condition. It affects 9.4% of the American population, with 23 million people diagnosed with the disorder; and it is the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S. (Diabetes.org, 2015). Diabetes mellitus occurs when the beta cells of the pancreas do not secrete enough insulin to metabolize the carbohydrates that we eat. Carbohydrates in our bodies convert into types of sugar or glucose. Hence, the reason why people may use the word “sugar” when describing this disorder. We use these sugar elements for metabolic energy. Failure to metabolize the carbohydrates will result in increased “sugar” or glucose levels in the blood. There are several types of diabetes. Type I diabetes mellitus is usually diagnosed when the individual is young. The pancreas secrets very little insulin. These individuals must take insulin injections several times a day. 30 30 April April 2019 2019 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory
In Type II diabetes mellitus the pancreas produces insulin but in insufficient amounts. The body may develop a resistance to insulin and cannot effectively use it. In certain situations, the body may develop antibodies that work to destroy insulin, creating a deficiency in the body. However, the most common cause of Type II diabetes is obesity. In obesity, the body cannot keep up with the increased demand for insulin. In all of these situations, the decrease in insulin leads to raising glucose levels in our bodies. Classic symptoms of diabetes include increased appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, weakness, dry skin, and blurred vision. The inability to effectively use carbohydrates for metabolic energy will result in the break down of stored fat. This will result in unexplained weight loss in some individuals. But this weight loss is not good. It is associated with the formation of harmful toxins called ketones. Diabetes can have long term effects on the body. Individuals with diabetes develop increased blood cholesterol levels. This elevation leads to poor blood circulation, heart disease, hypertension, strokes, kidney failure, blindness, and amputations. Health care providers recommend a multi-focused approach for the treatment of diabetes. Individuals with Type I diabetes require frequent monitoring of glucose levels and daily dosages of insulin. People with Type II diabetes take oral medications that increase insulin production in the pancreas. Increased exercise, diet and weight control are essential for individuals with both types of Diabetes. Blood glucose levels fluctuate in diabetes. To get an idea of what glucose levels are over time individuals should assess their A1C levels. A1C is a blood test that shows what the average blood glucose level has been over three months. This information is used to regulate medications used to control glucose levels and to identify if the diet and exercise plan is effective. The Bible makes several references to healthy living and eating habits. 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us that whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do, we should do it all to the glory of God. God warns us against overeating and yielding to indulgences. To do the work of the Lord we must stay fit and be healthy. Knowledge is power. THINK AND GROW FIT
What You Believe About Yourself Is Powerful! For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. – Proverbs 23:7 Do you know the people you talk to the most everyday can alter your thoughts? It may be a friend, close relative or even a well-meaning co-worker that can impact your life. During your childhood, your parents had major influence on your thought process; some good, some bad because of family tradition. Also, social media is another influential force that can change the way you think with so many different viewpoints. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2 However, none of these examples are more dangerous than that little voice you listen to inside constantly. Thinking positive thoughts takes a controlled and disciplined mind. The secret to living a healthy life is believing in your success before you see it. No matter your current situation, you have to believe you can be healthy and disease free right now, before the physical manifestation. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7
Most people forget this important step. They try to change external conditions by working directly on those conditions, but this almost always proves to be temporary. Train your conscious mind to think thoughts of success, happiness, health, and prosperity. Learn to cast out negativity such as fear, doubt and indecision. Keep your mind busy with the expectation of the best, and make sure the thoughts you habitually think are based upon what you want in your life. Finally, brother and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Philippians 4:8
So if you want to lose weight or reverse a sickness in your body, believe that you are whole and healthy first. Friends and family are going to try to steal your dreams and often times it’s the people closest to you that will discourage you. Just when you make up your mind to finally start eating better and exercise, someone will convince you not to for various reasons. It’s important to keep your goals to yourself without letting anyone sidetrack you. Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23 Most people go through life taking little notice of their thought process: how they think, what they fear, how thoughts can sabotage you if you pay attention to them. We go through life neglecting one of the most important and powerful forces in our life: our thoughts. What you focus on the most you will manifest it in your life. Our minds are directing our thoughts towards a desired outcome. Focus on healthy living and you will start to see your habits and body change. Focus on what you currently see and you will continue getting the same results. Our thoughts are the primary creative forces in our life, use them consciously and you will awaken yourself to a whole new life of positivity and opportunities. In order to make changes in your life, you must change the way you use you thoughts. You cannot think both a negative and positive thought at the same time, as one will always dominate the other. As humans, we are creatures of habit, and so are our minds. To change your outer body, you must change your internal thoughts.
3 IMPORTANT ACTION STEPS 1. Do not entertain negativity: A positive and negative thought cannot entertain the mind at the same time. The second your mind wanders in the direction of negativity immediately replace that thought with a positive one. (ANT- Automatic Negative Thoughts) 2. Change the landscape of your mind: Feed your mind with the things you want. Pick up healthy books and magazines that promote healthy living. Watch TV shows that advocate healthy living. 3. Surround yourself with success: Hang out with people who already live a healthy lifestyle. Their good habits will rub off on you. Birds of a feather flock together. 32 April 2019 | Grace&Glory
