shares some words of wisdom to parents for Back-to-School.
For in Him we live, and move, and have our being; – Acts 17:28a This month’s issue is dedicated to LIFE! Every day we are given is another chance at LIFE. We are to treasure every moment of LIFE. Every breath we take every move we make is a gift from God. You’ve heard it said many times in many ways that LIFE is valuable. Our cover story this month is no stranger to anyone . . . Dr. A.C.D. Vaughn, and we are celebrating with him a new lease on life as he celebrates his 74th Birthday. Dr. Vaughn says, “He is living on the wings of prayer.” You will understand just what he is talking about in our exclusive interview with him. In addition, a few of his closest admirers contributed their birthday wishes to him in this issue. Also in this month’s issue we are talking about that wonderful time of year for parents ‘Back-to-School’ time. We’ve included tips for the college students to start off healthy this school year and not gain those dreaded pounds affectionately called the ‘Freshmen 15’. In the Education Digest column this month, Dr. Tim Tooten
As we try to do every month, we pray this issue will inspire, inform and hopefully empower your lives. The Word of Encouragement and To Your Good Health columns will inspire you. Nutrition & You and Body Basics will inform you. Teen Connect, Bookshelf and the Woman’s Perspective will empower you. Check them out. In closing as we celebrate LIFE this month, I admonish you to do the same. Celebrate your life with every fiber in your body. Remember that no matter what happens in this life we are still here to talk about it and since we are still here . . . let’s CELEBRATE LIFE!
This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. – Psalm 118:24

Q&A
Interview With
Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn If anyone were to mention Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn’s name in our great city, like many of you I would know whom they would be speaking of . . . the legendary preacher and pastor, the national icon, and a true man of God. But it wasn’t until I met Dr. Vaughn personally in 2006 that I could really say I know him. I was fascinated with this pastor who was always addressed by three letters A.C.D. as his first name- Dr. A.C. D. Vaughn. I was mesmerized by his loving personality. I was in awe every time I had the opportunity to just talk to him. Dr. Vaughn immediately accepted me into his fold and made me feel as if I had been a part all of my life. I am honored to be one of his adopted daughters. In 2011 Dr. Vaughn gave us quite a scare when he suffered a heart attack and had to undergo bypass surgery. There were so many prayers bombarding heaven for Dr. Vaughn’s recovery, and the Lord heard them all. Dr. Vaughn made a remarkable recovery and returned to his pulpit in record time better than ever. I talked with Dr. Vaughn and asked him about this life changing experience and he called it, “A pause on the agenda of God.” He explained that his heart attack was like a pause in his life to stop, reflect and be reminded how valuable life is and another chance at life to treasure every moment you are given. He said it was a time of renewal and refreshing and likened it to a horse race, when the horse gets refreshed in the last lap to make it through to the end. Dr. Vaughn said that he never had a doubt that the Lord would bring him out and that He would bring him out stronger. He further went on to say that life is a short journey not a long journey and sometimes we have to experience a crisis to appreciate God’s gift of life and not take it for granted. Dr. Vaughn told me that he has been walking with the Lord since he was eleven years old and he has always taken his walk with the Lord seriously. He said the Lord blessed him to pastor the very church where he met the Lord and he has been pastoring for 55 years. One of the last things we talked about was the love of his life, his wife Dr. Lillian Vaughn. The Vaughns are celebrating 49 years of marriage on his birthday and Dr. Vaughn said, “I received the best birthday gift 49 years ago.” Here is my exclusive interview with the one and only Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn:
5 G&G: Dr. Vaughn, I am so happy to be able to share this interview with our readers during this occasion in your life, your 74th birthday. So for starters we say “Happy Birthday to You!”
Dr. Vaughn the Man G&G: Dr. Vaughn for many of us, we see you as a living legend. Whom would you say is a legend in your eyes and why? Name one person in your life that has made the biggest influence.
8 August August 2012 2012 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 8
Dr. Vaughn: Dr. Harold A Carter, Sr. In my eyes is a legend, because he has mentored more than one hundred sons and daughters in ministry. Jesus Christ has been my biggest influence, because He is the captain of my salvation and all that I am and hope to be I owe to Him. He has skillfully guided me through 55 years of ministry, He has blessed me to pastor three churches and given me the greatest family any man could hope to have. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, you have come at an age
Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn
Senior Pastor Sharon Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD after witnessing many phases of your life. Which phase do you think was the best and why? What is the most significant historical event you have witnessed in your lifetime? Dr. Vaughn: I have enjoyed every year that the Lord has given me. I’ve discovered that every day that the Lord has given me is sweeter then the day before. Each morning that I wake up I see new manifestations from the love of God in my life. Besides the civil rights movement the most significant event I have witnessed in my life was the election of President Barack Obama. He represents the fulfillment of the dreams of our Ancestors. Our ancestors died longing for the day that a black man and his family would be the leader of our country and occupy 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, at this pinnacle of your life, describe the best thing about you now, what do you like about being at this stage in life? Are there any regrets, did any leave a lasting impact on you? Dr. Vaughn: My life has been a romantic journey with my Lord, I have enjoyed every phase of life that the Lord has granted me. I have no regrets. My life is proof of the fact that our forefathers were right . . . we are climbing Jacob’s ladder and every round goes higher and higher. Outside of my call to the ministry the greatest gift that God has given me is my family. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, have you accomplished what you wanted in life? What are your
Q&A interview
greatest accomplishments in ministry? What do you have on your plate that you would still like to do in this lifetime? Dr. Vaughn: I have accomplished more than I have ever dreamed of in this life and all of this has been based on the fact that I received a divine calling from God and have had sense enough to realize that He did not call me to be a celebrity but His servant. The only thing on my plate that I still want to do is to continue to be an instrument that the Lord uses to bring many lost souls to His kingdom and to be continuously used by God to make the crooked straight and the rough places plain for a younger generation. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, our society is aging and our population is entering a whole new era in their lives. What advice would you like to personally pass on to the next generation? Dr. Vaughn: My advice to the next generation is to always keep your antenna up high enough where you can hear the voice of God who will direct your steps in a sure and solid way.
Dr. Vaughn the Pastor G&G: Dr. Vaughn, being a senior pastor with more than 50 years of preaching, teaching and pastoring, what would you say is the most significant change you have seen in ministry? Dr. Vaughn: I have seen a new generation in ministry that have more concerns promoting themselves then lifting Jesus Christ. In so many instances it’s all about them and not about God. G&G: Dr. Vaughn as a senior pastor, where do you focus the bulk of your effort and attention in ministry at this stage in life? Dr. Vaughn: Still being a good shepard to the flock that God has placed me over. All of these years I have tried to administer love where it is needed the most to each member in my congregation; as long as one sheep has a need a good shepard will try to fully administer to him. There is no such thing as big I’s and little u’s in the kingdom of God. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, with the explosion of social media technology in today’s society, what are your thoughts on non-traditional methods being used now to spread the gospel? Do you believe these methods align with
Jesus’ Great Commission for His church? Dr. Vaughn: Anything that will reach the lost for Christ is worth us pursuing. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, how would you describe a successful pastor? How would you describe a successful church? What do you believe is the greatest need of the church today? Dr. Vaughn: In my opinion God has not called us to be successful but He has called us to be faithful. In the final day God will reward us based on our faithfulness. If one has entered the ministry to gain material possessions or worldly fame, they don’t understand what ministry is all about. In the book of Revelations the Lord says to the preacher, “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give you a crown to life.” G&G: Dr. Vaughn, with so many aspiring young ministers on the forefront, what would you advise a young minister starting a church today? Dr. Vaughn: Make sure that it is the brain child of God and not theirs.
Dr. Vaughn and Family G&G: Dr. Vaughn, I understand that you are not just celebrating your birthday but your wedding anniversary also. I’m sure it was a joy to marry your bride on your birthday. How many years is this for you and Mrs. Vaughn? Dr. Vaughn: It is forty-nine years on August 3, 2012. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, if you were to name three things to describe First Lady Lillian Vaughn, what would they be? Dr. Vaughn: Supportive, dedicated, a praying person. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, describe the best thing about being in your family. What are your greatest joys? Dr. Vaughn: The best thing about being in my family is we know how to have family fun and we enjoy each other. We are each others best friends. My greatest joys are my three grandchildren and my three children. They are my jewels from God. I am also blessed
Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn & First Lady Dr. Lillian Vaughn in my life to have an extended family of sons and daughters across the land amongst them are two United States Ambassadors. Many of them have been ordained in the ministry under me. G&G: Dr. Vaughn, can you share with our readers your secret to living a successful and meaningful Christian life? Down through the years, how were you able to continue in the faith without wavering? Dr. Vaughn: I have always known who I am, but more important I know whose I am. G&G: Do you have any final comments? Dr. Vaughn: The main desire of my heart has always been to never bring embarrassment on the kingdom of God or my family. In all these years I’ve had a good mentor in the person of Dr. Harold Alphonso Carter, Sr.; a friendship I have enjoyed for 53 years. In my opinion he is a true standard for what good ministry is all; along with him I have had the blessing of Dr. Vernon Nathaniel Dobson, pastor emeritus of Union Baptist Church. The two of them have blessed my life. I am also blessed to serve as Chairman of the advisory board for this- one of the greatest Christian magazines . . . the Grace & Glory Magazine.

I am very pleased to offer a tribute to one I can honestly call “my friend.” Dr. A. C. D. Vaughn, now considered one of the legendary preacher-pastors in our city and in much of the religious community across our nation did not come to have this designation out of thin air. The Bible tells us that Jeremiah had received his essential calling, nature, and mission responsibilities even in the womb of his mother. The Bible is really telling us that Jeremiah was one of those rare servants of God who could do no other than what he was doing. The “stuff” was in him. This is the case I can make in saluting Dr. A.C.D. Vaughn. Since I have known him for more than 50 years I can honestly say that the basic bearing and tenor of his life has been and remains the same, throughout the years. The times have a way of changing some persons with the idea of making one fit the situations they face. This is not the case with Dr. Vaughn. His primary concern has always been that of making his life and witness pleasing unto God. I therefore salute him, his wife, family, ministry and all who are blessed by this legendary servant of God. My life is made the richer because I know him. “Happy Birthday, Doc.”

What a joy it is to celebrate, honor and salute Dr. A.C.D. Vaughn on his 74th birthday. He is my Father in the faith and a faithful father, to all of us, both the children he’s adopted in the Lord, and also his own biological children. He has not only nurtured and encouraged us, but given us so many Ambassador Sujay opportunities to share and display our gifts, in teaching, (Suzan Johnson Cook) preaching and leading at U.S. Ambassador the Hampton University at Large for Minister’s Conference. It is International because of him that I was Religious Freedom elected the first female Appointed by President of the conference. President Barack Obama He has been with me, through thick and thin, at times of joy and sorrow; at my 50th birthday celebration in NYC, at my Installation at the Hampton Ministers Conference as President, and more recently at my swearing in as the first African American and first female U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom; and then at my mother’s Homegoing service, as well as by the bedside of loved ones and friends as they were transitioning He is the Pastor’s Pastor. He is the faithful leader. He is the anointed prophet and preacher. He is the loving husband, father and grandfather. He is the Sage, the Seasoned saint, whom friends admire and confide in. He is the survivor of heart surgery. He is the beloved son who returned back to his home church, to shepherd and guide. He knows just when we need a little encouragement and a lot of prayer. He helps those who mourn. He invites in those whom the world has rejected. He puts “something in the hand” of my kids, or would treat my girlfriends and I to dinner, always at the “right time”, without our asking, but always knowing with a father’s heart. He is loving, generous and kind. He makes us feel so special. I am so glad I am in his life, and he is in mine. Thank you for the opportunity to celebrate one who lives by Grace and Gives God the Glory. Warmest Regards and best wishes, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dad Vaughn. Your Daughter #1 A+++ over the past 22 years.”

Birthdays are God’s way of reminding us we’re blessed and highly favored. We are truly blessed to have Dr. Alfred Vaughn in our lives. Happy 74th and may God continue to fill your life with his favor and lavish you with his love.
Dr. Vaughn, you are a blessing to the body of Christ and to this preacher. I am thankful to be one of your many sons in the ministry. I pray you enjoy another year the Lord has given unto you.
Rev. Dr. Tim Tooten, Sr., Pastor/Founder Harvest Christian Ministries Baltimore, MD I would first like to extend a Happy Birthday wish and prayer to Dr. Vaughn, my pastor, godfather, and friend. Every since my father, the late Rev. Samuel T. Redd, Sr. passed away (Dr. Vaughn’s very Samuel Redd close friend), Dr. Vaughn showed what a true friend he was by blanketing the Redd family with nothing but support and love. I have watched this man of God exhibit what it really means to be an anointed man, this birthday is extra special because of what he has come through from this time last year. He has come back stronger, proving that God has much more in store for him.

His outstanding service in this nation has earned him national recognition from three great institutions. In June 2006, the Hampton University Minister’s Conference, Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, and the Afro American Newspaper honored him as a “Living Legend.” He is the only person to have served as president of the Baptist Ministers Conference eight terms. Under Dr. Vaughn’s pastoral guidance, Sharon Baptist Church established an outreach model, described by Harold A. McDougall in Black Baltimore: A New
Theory of Community as a “Base Community” that addresses many concerns shared by the city at large. From the food bank to tutoring and school supply program, to the “adoption” program linking youths with seniors, to its Men’s Fellowship program that mentors to young men, the Sharon Baptist Church has established a reputation for progress and activism in the face of troubling challenges. Dr. Vaughn, is a graduate of Virginia Seminary and College (now Virginia University of Lynchburg) and Southeastern University, with earned A.B., B.D., and Masters of Divinity degrees. He has also earned a Doctoral of Ministry degree and has received four honorary doctorates. “In the very moment you want to give up, give it all you’ve got! You are on the brink of your Breakthrough!!” – Aisha Martin
Have you ever thought about giving up? Has life’s jewels made you want to just throw in the towel and say no more. Have you considered running away to avoid the craziness of life? I have, over and over again and then I am reminded that there is no situation and no obstacle that is in our life that God the Father cannot remove. This month’s issue is dedicated to a very special individual in my life my father Dr. A.C.D. Vaughn. He is and has always been my number one cheerleader. The lessons that he has taught me by the way he lives his life are worth more than the education I received at the Higher education institutions that I attended. He taught me that in life I will have struggles, disappointments, heartaches, and heartbreaks. He showed me that despite all of that if I keep God as the center of my life then I will live to see tomorrow and have a story to tell and a life lesson under my belt. I am SOOOO Grateful for everything that he has taught me I am grateful for a Man who is not only a Father but a DADDY. Before you give up on your journey remember to keep God as your center and all will be ok. Until Next time, Stay Strong, Stay Focused, and Stay Grounded in the Lord. Saving Money and Still Eating Healthfully By Herline A. Knights, RD, LD
Everyone is looking for ways to save money at the grocery store. The following suggestions may provide some new ideas for trimming your grocery bill and still eating healthfully.
Canned, frozen, and dried foods products. Do not avoid canned, frozen, and dried foods. Many varieties of these foods contain as many vitamins and minerals as fresh. Some even have more. For instance, frozen peaches contain more vitamin C than their fresh counterparts do. 100-calorie snack packs Make your own 100-calorie snack packs by portioning snacks into reclosable plastic bags as soon as you get home from the store. Value packs Look carefully when buying economy-sized “value packs.” They are not always the best buy, and this is even worse if maybe you can not eat it all before it expires. On the other hand, some bulk foods really are a better value and you might want to consider asking a friend to buy in bulk with you—that way you can split the cost and the item. Before you leave for the store, grab your calculator. It can help you make smart decisions. Nutrition information It is more important than ever to become a careful reader of labels. Is one item really more healthful and worth the extra cost, or is it simply really good marketing? Educate yourself, and seek out credible sources of nutrition information now. The butcher Become friends with your butcher, who can help you to choose more economical alternatives, tell you about the best deals, and help you to trim and portion your meat before you take it home. Seasonal vegetables and fruits Buy your vegetables and fruits in season. Look for cookbooks that are divided by season for inspiration. Locally grown produce Look for locally grown produce, or consider growing your own. Menu planning Coordinate your menus to get the most use out of individual ingredients. For example, if your recipe only calls for one half of a container
of plain yogurt or chicken broth, what could you do with the rest? Leftovers Plan to use your leftovers. Could you crumble your leftover hamburgers to make a spaghetti sauce with meat? Get creative. Shelf height Keep in mind that the cheaper foods are often not at eye level at the grocery store—they are on the lowest and highest shelves. Preparation to preserve nutrients Just as important as buying foods that are nutritionally sound is practicing preparation techniques that preserve those nutrients. Grazing If you are a “grazer” and often end up throwing food away before you finish it, you may want to consider trying to eat three “square” meals a day. Smart shopping Always go shopping with a plan. Coordinate your menu and grocery list with the weekly sales and the coupons that you have. The cost of convenience Remember that convenience often costs. Precut produce, containers with all of the ingredients to make a sandwich, and microwaveable meals are convenient, but unnecessary if you are trying to save money. Best if used by, sell by, and expiration dates Do not confuse “best if used by” or “sell by” dates with “expiration” dates. “Sell by” dates are a way to let grocery stores know when the store needs to remove the item from the shelf. “Best if used by” dates are often much earlier than when a food will spoil. Use good judgment when deciding what to toss and what to use. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 25 25 www.gracenglorymagazine.org

About Ames United Methodist Church Ames United Methodist Church is a historical fixture in the Greater Harford County community, striving to maintain the spirit of a loving family of faith, empowering people to be reconciled to God, transformed and free in Christ through Bible-based study, ministry and service to others. As the oldest African American church in Bel Air, MD, Ames unites people from all walks of life to worship and serve together in more than 40 different ministries. “The people of Ames are a caring community of followers of Christ whose hearts are to reach out in ministry and service to their community,” says Rev. Jay Blake, a native Baltimorean who pastors Ames United Methodist Church. On August 18, Ames United Methodist Church will team with Aberdeen Proving Ground’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program to host a gospel concert, “An Afternoon of Musical Praise”, featuring Grammy and Dove Award winning artist Yolanda Adams. The concert is a tribute to wounded warriors in
Maryland. The event will be held at the Post Theater, located at 3245 Frankford Street (Bldg. 3245). “As a former serviceman myself, I have a deep and abiding appreciation for the commitment our military members make when they are sworn in and serve this nation in peace and conflict. Ames is committed to partnering with organizations that recognize and celebrate our troops, particularly in Maryland,” says Rev. Blake, who served in the U.S. Navy. “An Afternoon of Musical Praise” will also showcase local talent, including musical performances from the group Apostle from Oak Grove Baptist Church, Baltimore City College Choir and others. WBAL’s Dr. Tim Tooten, Baltimore’s only full-time education reporter and founding pastor of Harvest Christian Ministries in Baltimore, has agreed to serve as master of ceremonies. Ames United Methodist Church is located at 112 Baltimore Pike in Bel Air, MD.

Carla J. Debnam, MS, LCPC Executive Director, Renaissance Christian Counseling Center
Love and Loss This past year has been one filled with a significant level of love and loss. It seems like several persons, myself included, have had loved ones die suddenly from unexpected illnesses, accidents, murder or known diseases that have taken their course. This of course is nothing new but it has been challenging to those impacted by the sudden changes these losses have brought their way. The burden brought on by the absence of loved ones is something that never disappears but it does get better over time. There is a saying ‘the deeper the
love the greater the loss’. The closeness in relationships affects how the grief process shapes up. It impacts the overall difficulty and length of the bereavement process. As Christians we have hope in the comfort and healing that only God can bring through the Holy Spirit. We are reminded in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 of God’s compassion toward His people. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Our struggles with love and loss can be conquered when we rely on the strength and love of God. He is near to the brokenhearted and walks with us through the valleys of life. The great Richard Smallwood song, Healing has lyrics that identify with our pain and yet encourages and uplifts its listeners. That is our charge in this season of life. We are to be there for each other in the low moments and
high moments of life. The Bible tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice and to weep with those who weep. Persons experiencing the loss of a loved one need to be reminded to rejoice in their loved ones memory after the weeping season ends. It will end because God’s word proclaims that weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. For those in the midst of going through the transitions that death can bring, be strong in the Lord. This is the time to think about your loved one’s legacy and the impact they made while they were still here and can make in the future. This is the time to reflect and rejoice over your loved one’s life. This is the time to live in the midst of your loss. Now is the time to put your faith to the test knowing that Jesus has promised to never leave or forsake you. The loss of a loved one can sometimes be devastating but those who hope in the Lord will have their strength renewed and their lives rebuilt. You can make it through the season of love and loss. Continue to stay connected to your faith, family, and friends. Seasons change and this season of life will not be stagnant but will bear fruit in the end. The words of the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson says it all, “Tis better to have loved and lost . . . than never to have loved at all.” www.gracenglorymagazine.org 29

The 2012 Olympic Games are underway in London, England. Each athlete from around the globe has worked untiringly and is striving to do his or her best to represent their country. The thought of winning a medal for them is priceless. The work that they have put in over the past three or more years all adds up to their BEST efforts! Win or lose they give their best. What would it be like if we gave our best to God? God gave us his best by giving his Son, Jesus. How BIG was His sacrifice for us? PRICELESS! Have you come close to giving God your best? If not, why? What’s holding you back from giving your all to Him? We should never give God our “leftovers” he should always get the best of our attention, time, energy and even our resources. If it was not for Him we would not be . . . so it
is crucial that we all recognize the source of our strength. We cannot win anything without the help of God. In the word of God there are instructions about how important it is for us to give Him our best, especially if we expect to receive His help in whatever we find ourselves doing. There are several ways by which we can give our best to God. Take some time to communicate with Him through prayer, read the Bible, attend church regularly, help others in need, try to avoid sin and most of all do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Showing God’s love is giving our best! In fact it is a win, win Pastors Gregory & Tonya Dennis situation . . . so go KINGDOM WORSHIP CENTER 6419 York Road, Towson, MD 21212 for the gold!

education digest
There’s a reason why there are so many cars on the parking lots of area shopping malls. It’s no accident that the check-out lines are so long. Here’s a clue. Thousands of parents are in the midst of back-to-school shopping. They’re in search of required school supplies. After all, last year’s backpack is out of date and is being replaced by the latest style. The clothing styles have also changed over the summer. In the midst of all the busyness I encourage parents to look beyond the need for school supplies and new clothing and take time to offer some inspirational backto-school tidbits. I remember giving my son a pep talk of sorts some years ago on his return to elementary school. I passed along the familiar pieces of advice like, pay attention in class, study hard and turn in your homework assignments on time. There were some other words I made sure were included in my back-to-school lecture. They were words of inspiration. There was one scripture in particular, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” These were more than mere words recited from the Bible. It was a scripture a passage I prayed he’d memorize and make a part of his life. I truly believed that there were no reading, writing or math assignments that would become too hard for him to complete. I admit that there were many evenings when the both of us would struggle to understand a particular lesson. It wasn’t long though before we Dr. Tim Tooten, Sr.
Dr. Tim Tooten, Sr. is the Senior Education Emmy AwardWinning reporter for WBAL-TV (NBC). He’s also the Pastor and Founder of Harvest Christian Ministries in Baltimore County, Maryland.
figured it out and with excitement would give each other a high five and recite the Philippians 4:13 scripture. I’ve always been a strong advocate of parents taking on the role of becoming their children’s first teachers. I also believe that grandparents, uncles, aunts and guardians play important roles in the lives of young people. I hear so many people say our schools are in decline because prayer is no longer “legally” allowed in public schools. The last time I checked, prayer had not been banned in our homes. There’s nothing to prevent you from taking time to pray for your children before they leave for school. There’s nothing to keep you from praying for your children during the course of the day and when they return home. I’m reminded of the words found in this particular scripture passage, James 5:6, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” I believe that in order for us to become more effective in the lives our children, we need to pray and intentionally model a life of learning and faith. I believe if our children see us exercising our faith in prayer and commitment they’ll do the same. If they see us reading the Bible or another book, they’ll be inspired as well. I have an update. My son is no longer in elementary school. He’s about to start his third year of college. He remembers well the scripture he learned many years ago (Philippians 4:13) and is now able to share how those words have blessed his own life.

bookshelf
Book Shelf
by Brandie Manigault
Dear Readers, It’s back to school time again. The following two books are a must have for every student. They have been on my book shelf for years; notes in the margins, pages highlighted in multiple colors all throughout, and the “sign” of a book being read… pages are falling out. These two books have changed my life, and although I have had them for years, the content is still relevant and I get something out of both every time I open them up. This month I present to you…
Spirit Filled Life Bible for Students By God
My student life Bible I received when I was in high school (many years ago) and although I have purchased more Bibles since then (in different translations and versions), I still go back to my “ole faithful” student life Bible. Why do I love this version so much? It contains an introduction and an outline for all 66 books, sections within the text that breakdown certain words of importance to that chapter, and my favorite … sections that show you how to apply the principles that are being taught in that chapter. The Bible, in all versions, is the manual for life. It contains everything you will need to know from walking in the favor of God, to dealing with peer pressure, to pushing beyond your flesh in order to finish the race and so much more. There is no greater book for a student to have in their possession than the Bible. I can guarantee that you, or your student, will fall in love with this version as much as I did. As you read it, be open and allow the Lord to speak to you during your semester. He will guide you through His Word and give you everything you need for a successful year.
Dare to Dream: God has a plan for your life! By Paula White
My second favorite book of all time that is almost as marked up as my Spirit Filled Life Bible for Students is my copy of Dare to Dream by Paula White. Everyone faces adversity. There will be multiple times when you as a college student, will want to pack up your books and go home. You
may become overwhelmed by the overall experience of balancing school work, a social life, and a possible job. Or you just may get home sick. Dare to Dream is an inspiring book that keeps reminding you that there is something bigger for you beyond your current situation. Just keep pushing. Paula White reminds the reader that God has a BIG plan for you and it is attainable. It is conquerable. It is bigger than you could ever image. You just have to keep moving forward and dream. Dream a dream bigger than you think you can handle. You will have to embrace the challenge of believing in yourself, and daring
yourself to dream a big dream. Paula White reminds us that the enemy wants our dream. She says, “Commit yourself to pursuing your dreams without compromising your beliefs.” No matter what happens during your school year, stay focused, push through, continue to dream, and make it happen. Dare to Dream is a constant visual reminder that you “can do all things through Christ who strengthens you”! (Philippians 4:13). *Side note: there are two books by Paula White with the title Dare to Dream. The one that I have that I highly recommend is the one that has the subtitle God Has a Plan For Your Life. It is not in stores. You have to find it online, but it is definitely worth typing it in your search engine.

DORM ROOM WORKOUTS
body basics
What you are able to do in your room, whether staying up to study or waking up early to workout, is somewhat dependent on your roommate's feelings and schedule.
College life opens new and exciting opportunities for young adults. Leaving the comforts of home for the first time to live with a total stranger in a room the size of a closet; making your own choices about where to go, when to return, what time to go to bed and who to spend time with; assuming more financial responsibility for books, groceries, and entertainment; oh, and there's that learning thing too. Most colleges and universities require incoming freshman to live in the dorms, which means a couple things when it comes to your health: • You have little choice when it comes to your food since you're using a meal plan and usually don't have access to a full kitchen. • Your space is limited, which also limits your overall activity (three steps to your desk, one step to the fridge and a few steps to the hall bathroom). • What you are able to do in your room, whether staying up to study or waking up early to workout, is somewhat dependent on your roommate's feelings and schedule. This combination of limited food choices, small space, and late nights can lead to the notorious "Freshman 15". According to recent research, the odds are against you after move-in day: Cornell University researchers found that college freshman gain half a pound per week on average. That's about 11 times more weight than the average 17-and 18-year old will gain, and nearly 20 times more than the average weight gain among adults. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) found that both male and female college students eat approximately 500 additional calories between the hours of 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. But the dreaded college weight gain is NOT inevitable. Sure, some young adults are still growing in height, bone structure, and weight. But taking a preventive approach (rather than trying to crash diet or over-exercise when it's too late) is your best bet. Making healthier food choices, getting plenty of sleep, and increasing your daily activity (walking instead of taking the shuttle) will help. But one of the most important things you can do is exercise for at least 30 minutes, most days of the week. Your exercise plan should include three main components: Cardio (aerobic) exercise burns calories, trains your body to use more fat as fuel, strengthens your heart and lungs and helps relieve stress. Aim for 30-60 minutes, 3-6 days per week. Strength training helps you maintain and build lean muscle. If you aren't strength training regularly, you'll lose muscle (about half a pound per year) and your metabolism will slow down along with it. Fit in a full body workout (about 8-12 exercises) twice per week. Stretching or flexibility training, can help you improve your fitness level in other areas as well as reduce your risk for injury and joint problems later. Stretch after every workout and when you need a relaxing break. Your college recreation center will likely have all the options you need to stay healthy and fit, cardio machines, fitness classes, personal trainers, weights, a pool, an indoor track and more. But on those busy days (or late nights) the gym might not be an option. Here's what you CAN do with little or no money right from the comfort and convenience of your own (little) room. Cardio Options (FREE!) Even though you might feel corny by yourself, you can "design" your own workout for your small place. Try a combination of any of the following low-impact moves, always trying to get both your arms and legs involved: • Marching in place • Side steps (step touch) • Stepping up and down the stairs or running the stairs in your building • Jogging in place or high knee running in place • Jumping jacks • Kickboxing moves (front kicks, squats, side kicks, punches) • Turn on your favorite music and just dance!
If space and ceilings allow, jumping rope ($6) can torch big calories. If you don't have room for a rope, mimic it with your hands and wrists. Jump in place, skip, hop on one foot, etc. to get your heart pumping. Workout videos or DVDs ($10+) offer a lot of variety for a very low investment. Some workouts can be done in a small space, such as low impact aerobics, kickboxing, cardio Pilates, belly dancing, and more. Strength Training Options (FREE!) You can use your body weight for resistance to work several major muscle groups. Resistance bands ($15) offer greater resistance than your body weight alone, plus they're small, easy to store and have endless possibilities. For just a few more dollars, a good set of dumbbells ($20) and even a stability ball ($25) can round out your workout plan, giving you even more strength training options. Put your chair into storage and sit on your ball instead and you'll strengthen more than your mind while you study, plus it doubles as exercise equipment when you need it. Flexibility Options (FREE!) Most stretches can be done while sitting or standing, so you don't need any special equipment. Consider using your dorm furniture to help increase your stretching capacity: prop up foot up onto your chair, desk, or bed to stretch the hamstrings more deeply; use the walls for stretching your arms, chest, and calves. Invest in a yoga workout video. This form of exercise not only stretches and strengthens, but it also helps relieve stress and calm that busy mind, preparing you for a more restful sleep or energized day. Consider buying a yoga mat ($20) or padded exercise mat ($25+) they will make stretching (and other floor exercises) much more comfortable. Consider buying a yoga mat ($20) or padded exercise mat ($25+). Both can be rolled up or folded away easily, and they will make stretching (and other floor exercises) much more comfortable. Dorm life doesn't have to be a doom. For little or no money, the single room that multitasks as a bedroom, study, kitchen and lounge can also become your own personal gym. Leave college weight gain at the door. In just a few minutes a day, you'll see a toned, healthy, and relaxed body and mind. What better way to experience college life? Source: www.sparkpeople.com

INDUSTRY Damita Haddon Damita Haddon is BACK! Her new project “Anticipation” is now available to you. It’s been about four years since her last release “No Looking Back”, which I loved by the way. The return of Damita, the wife of gospel music icon Detrick Haddon, is doing it again with the help of Brandon Avery Smith who’s no stranger to the music industry, he co-wrote five songs on the project.
Crystal Rucker
Darius Paulk Songwriter Darius Paulk, the writer who penned the #1 Gospel Song of the Year, “Nobody Greater” by VaShawn Mitchell, was brought into US District Courts, of NY, for a copyright infringement claim by Travis Malloy. Malloy claimed he did not receive writing credits, royalties from airplay, and music sales for the song. Paulk totally denies the claim stating, “I wrote ‘Nobody Greater’ during a traumatic time in 2008, it’s my testimony, I was laid off because of downsizing at my job, I had just gotten a car and a new place. Also, my grandfather was just diagnosed with cancer. The message of the song reflects my personal struggles and victories. Travis Malloy did not contribute to the creation of this song. I wrote the lyrics and melody by myself in the privacy of my home. His claim is baseless.” The copyright infringement case has been dismissed and there is no option for a new trial for Malloy’s attorney because they did not file in the time frame the court allows. The accounting case has not been heard by the court yet. That is where Travis Malloy has to prove that he co-wrote the song in order to receive any accounting of the money the song has earned. This is quite unfortunate, yet triumphant thus far for Darius. I love the song, VaShawn is a great artist the single is still in heavy rotation. Darius had a great testimony thru this song and even Kirk Franklin was so blessed by its content, I remember he called Darius & VaShawn up to share his award with him as they were all nominated in the category Kirk won. He loved it so much he shared his victory with them, which was touching and powerful. 40 August 2012 | Grace&Glory
Crystal Rucker’s debut album “You Deserve” is here!! I’m such a fan of her voice and ministry. I had an opportunity to experience her ‘live’ on several occasions. She was featured on Jonathan Nelson’s “Live in Baltimore” debut project, her voice reigns on the song “Change Will Come”, she has been known throughout the COGIC community for many years, so it was just a matter of time before the news spread of this anointed minstrel. She’s currently on Ricky Dillard’s & New G’s last release “Keep Living” one of my personal favorites. Her single “You Deserve” is great, she also boldly remade “Changed” an old Hawkins favorite, and she nails it, Tramaine Hawkins should be proud! That first soprano voice of hers is a force to be reckoned with. Her song “Nothing Less” is over the cover Clark Sisters hit “You Bought the Sunshine”, Crystal Rucker is giving you a great mix of good ole traditional gospel music with a contemporary swing. This album is good for the soul.

J Moss His new project titled V4 was released July 31, EVERYWHERE!! While J’ and the PAJAM team have been hard at work for other artists and still making noise in the music industry, it’s been three years since his last solo release, but the wait is officially over! The singles “Good and Bad” and “The Prayers” featuring Bishop Hezekiah Walker & LFC as well as Dorinda Clark-Cole have been in rotation for a few weeks and I must say I love them both. J Moss has quite a few heavy hitters on this project, James Fortune is featured on “You Did”, I always joke about how Moss/Clark is such a musical arsenal and they definitely support and encourage each others musical efforts! J Moss called in Karen Clark-Sheard and Kierra on the song “Good Day”, but he didn’t stop there, his 12-year-old son, had his writing debut and co-wrote this song with his dad, also his wife, and his other son joined in the vocals. I told yall it’s a family affair. I had an opportunity to catch up with J Moss and asked him to share with me his thoughts on the project, he had this to say about V4, “Ericka, it’s basically getting back to business with J Moss, this album speaks to both sides of Victory, what you do before and after any storm, hands up, hands down, God’s got you, always has, always will. As long as you’re still breathing, let God do the rest. Don’t get caught up trying to control what you can’t control.” Go grab V4, the wait is over, J Moss is BACK!!!!

fashion focus Even if you think you’re “too tall” or “can’t walk in heels”, think again. Every fashionista should own at least one pair of fabulous heels – they’re the perfect example of a true fashion must-have, a transformative piece of clothing that adds a little extra something to any outfit.
A GIRL’S GUIDE TO HIGH HEELS This series will cover everything you might want to know about heels – from how to tell a quality shoe, what to spend on a pair of heels, and even where to buy the perfect pair of high heels. HOW TO WALK IN HIGH HEELS Just hear this… learning to walk in heels is something that takes lots of practice, and it’s not something you can learn just by reading an article!
That said, here are my top tips to get you started. With practice, you’ll be strutting like a pro in the highest heels! Start small. If you’ve never walked in high heels before, don’t start out learning with 5 inch stilettos – that’s a recipe for pain and maybe even injury! Try something smaller, like a 2 inch heel or wedge to get used to the feeling. You can always work your way up to your most killer heels. Walk heel to toe, not toe to heel. While it might be tempting to put your whole foot down at once, don’t do it – it makes your walk look strange when you’re wearing high shoes. Instead, put your heel down first, followed by your toe. This will give you more balance and make your stride look more natural. Take small steps. Wearing heels naturally makes your stride shorter, so you’ll need to take more steps than usual. Don’t expect to be able to walk as fast as you normally do in high heels. Step as if you were walking on a straight line. When you walk with one foot in front of the other, it gives your hips the sway that models are known for. Pretend you’re walking on a line on the ground, one foot in front of the other, or practice on an actual straight line at a basketball court or on a line in the floor. Watch how models do it. Download a video of a fashion show and watch the professionals strut in their high heels. While models walk the runway in a way that’s exaggerated from real life, you can learn from their walks and tone it down a little to get the perfect normal-person strut. Practice in front of a mirror until you get it down. 42 August 2012 | Grace&Glory
Practice… Then practice some more. At the end of the day, the best way to become a pro at walking in high heels is to do it as often as possible. Practice walking on carpet, slippery floors, upstairs, and outside. No amount of reading how to do it will make a difference if you don’t work at it. Walking in high heels is like any other skill – you need to do it a lot to get good at it. TIPS ON SHOPPING FOR HIGH HEELS Almost as important as which high heels you buy is how you shop for them! Here are some tips to keep in mind when shopping for heels to make sure you end up with the perfect pair for you. Have your feet measured so you know your exact size. Sometimes your feet can actually be two different sizes! To get your feet measured, just go to the shoe section of any good department store. Most of them should have tools to measure your foot and find your perfect size. Realize that you may be different sizes in different brands. Depending on the cut of a shoe, you could be a 7.5 in one brand and an 8 in another. Similarly, know what size you are in European sizes, because many quality shoe brands use those. Try on shoes at the end of the day. Believe it or not, your feet can change sizes throughout the day, and they swell a little bit by the end of the day. Try shoes on after walking around and you’ll get a picture of your true size. Walk around in the shoes before you buy them. Okay, a no brainer, but worth mentioning. You should do some laps around the shoe area in the shoes before you even think about buying! And remember to shop at stores that have good return policies – every shoe is going to be comfortable at first, but maybe not after an hour! Buy shoes somewhere with a decent return policy so you can wear them for a while and see they stay comfy before committing.
fashion focus If you don’t wear heels or don’t have any good quality high heels, this series will hopefully help take some of the mystery away and maybe teach you a few things you didn’t know about these fabulous shoes. QUALITY HIGH HEELS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR All heels are not created equal – in fact, there are huge differences in quality from one brand of shoe to the next.
Learn how to spot high quality shoes and you can invest in heels that will last you forever! Note how the sole is attached to the shoe. If the sole is stitched on, make sure the stitches are even and look secure. If it’s glued on, check to make sure that there is no space around the edges where the sole could start to peel off. You want a sole that’s seamless and isn’t going anywhere. Look for shoes with a layer of rubber on the heel – this will help prevent slippage and make it easier to walk in the shoes. Some heels don’t have rubber or any kind of grip, and these shoes will be difficult to walk in and possibly even dangerous! Pay attention to the lining. In high-quality shoes, the insole lining is usually made of leather, not a synthetic material, and goes all the way around the inside of the shoe. If the shoe only has lining on the bottom but not the sides, it won’t be as comfortable. Similarly, natural materials like leather absorb moisture and allow your foot to breathe – synthetics like vinyl won’t absorb moisture and will be much less comfortable. Material matters. Leather is the most popular material for high heels, but if you love animals and don’t want to contribute to cruelty, there are fabulous vegan options out there as well. Either way, make sure that you buy shoes that aren’t made out of synthetic fibers like nylon or plastic. These will be extremely uncomfortable after a few wears, and won’t last nearly as long as leather or good quality vegan shoes. THE BEST HEELS FOR YOUR BODY Let me just say that I don’t think you should have to dress to minimize any part of your body. That said, if you are selfconscious about something, by all means dress to minimize it if it makes you feel better. Here are some tips on which heels work the best with different body types.
If you have large ankles, don’t buy anything with an ankle strap as it will make your ankles look wider and draw attention. Go for a pump or slingback instead. This will draw attention away from your ankles and make your legs look longer. If your legs are short, avoid t-strap shoes because they shorten your legs and can make your feet look wider than normal. Similarly, ankle strap shoes aren’t the most flattering. Go for open toed shoes or nude high heels – they make your legs look long and lean. If you want your legs to look longer, pointy-toed shoes will give you the illusion of extra height. A warning, though: pointy-toed shoes may be uncomfortable if you have wide feet, so if that’s the case, save ‘em for the special occasions only! No point in being miserable all night just to look good. If you have wide feet, round-toed shoes have a cute vintage look, and can be the most comfortable option for those of us with wider feet. As a bonus, they can make your feet look smaller too. IT’S WORTH SPENDING MORE ON… Classic pumps and basics. A great quality pair of basic black heels can be worn with anything and will last forever. Similarly, a pair of nude high heels will never steer you wrong. Both of these styles can be worn for years and will still be “in fashion.” Shoes for work, interviews, and internships. When your professional reputation is at stake, you want to look your best. This means investing in quality shoes for work, or for when you go on interviews. DON’T SPEND A LOT ON… Espadrilles. There’s really no difference in quality between the brands when it comes to espadrilles – linen is linen, and rope is rope. Cheap ones are just as good as expensive Christian Louboutins in this case! Trendy shoes. If they’re going to be out of style in two months, dropping more than $100 is a waste of your money. Source: www.collegefashion.net

But the Comforter!!!!!!! The Holy Spirit is here!!!!!!!! But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you. [John 14:26 – The Amplified Bible] The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. [John 14:26 – The Message Bible] Welcome Holy Sport!!!!! The Songwriter penned this Song: “Welcome Holy spirit, we are in Your presence. Fill us with your power, Live inside of me. You're the living water, never dying fountain, Comforter and counselor, Take complete control. Fill us with your power. Live inside of me”. Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection have made available to us the Third Person of the Godhead – God’s Precious Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is here to teach us all things and bring to memory those things that God has told us before the foundation of the world. No longer is the Holy Spirit coming upon us as was done in the Old Testament. The Holy Spirit lives on the inside of every born-again believer. We don’t have to look on the outside of ourselves for a Comforter, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener or Standby. God through His Precious Holy Spirit now resides on the inside of us. Jesus’ request in the four gospels to have the Father send the Holy Spirit has been fulfilled and we – The Body of Christ have now been empowered to do the greater works that Jesus spoke about in (John 14:12). Jesus knew the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us would give God the glory by allowing us to do greater works – and here we are in the middle of the greatest dilemma some of us will ever experience. The world is in a crisis. We are living in the time when we need to show the unsaved and the unchurched, the power of the Greater One who lives on the inside of us. Cannibalism is taking place in our midst, bullying -- even though it may not be in the media right now is still on the rise, suicide, brush fires, sexual abuse between teachers and students, pornography, wars, parents abusing and killing children, children killing parents and all kinds of horrific acts are going on in the world today. However, the Body of Christ has Good News. Are you ready to share the Good News with the world? The Holy Spirit is here on planet earth – living big on the inside of us. The Amplified Bible has given us several names for the Holy Spirit and the many roles that He desires to perform through us – if we allow HIM: (1) Comforter The Role of the Holy Spirit as Comforter. The Holy Spirit takes the place as a sympathizer: He is there to comfort us when we have had misfortune or when we are dealing with the lost of a loved one, lonely and/or distraught. He offers relief and reduces the intensity of our pain and fears and calms and pacifies us. What are you dealing with today? Allow the Holy Spirit to be your Comforter. He knows exactly where you hurt and can bring aid quickly. (2) Counselor The role of the Holy Spirit as Counselor. He gives advice about problems. The Holy Spirit is there to counsel us on our personal problems. He provides direction or advice as to a decision or course of action assisting in the resolution of personal difficulties. The Holy Spirit as Counselor lives on the inside of us, ready, willing and able to give us advice as we seek His help. Because the Holy Spirit
is a Gentleman, He does not force Himself on us to give us advice, but waits patiently for us to seek Him out to help us in every aspect and area of our lives. Every step of the way in this walk of life, we need the Counselor to help us get through the day-to-day challenges and circumstances in our lives. Just like one would go to a Counselor to sort things out in their life, so too can you go to the Holy Spirit who should be the first person we seek when we need to be counseled. (3) Helper: The role of the Holy Spirit as Helper. As Helper the Holy Spirit assists us in fulfilling the needs that are given to us to be fulfilled by God. No need is too big or too small for the Holy Spirit to help us with. When you are in need of help, let the Holy Spirit be the first point of contact. He is available to help as in “helping to train” or “assist in training”. The Holy Spirit desires to help us with any situation and circumstance, we are dealing with and don’t know what to do. When I think of the word “helper” – I think of being in a place of need and having someone come alongside me to help me to sort things out. A way to help me get back on my journey, back on track. (4) Intercessor: The role of a Holy Spirit as Intercessor. So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance. [Romans 8:26 – The Amplified Bible]. In other words the Holy Spirit when we are challenged and don’t know what to say or do, He aids us and bears us up, interceding – standing in the gap with groaning that we don’t understand. He is a mediator, a negotiator who acts as a link between parties. Intercession is prayer to God on behalf of others. (5) Advocate The role of the Holy Spirit as Advocate. He is the one who comes to our aid when we sin, to stand by us and plead our case before God, interceding for us upon the throne of God, as we confess our sins (1 Jn. 1:8-2:2). In other words, the Holy Spirit pleads, or argues in favor of as One who pleads our cases in court, an advocate is one who speaks on behalf of others – He argues the case of others. He speaks in support of something. Allow the Holy Spirit today to be your Advocate going to God on your behalf. (6) Strengthener The role of Holy Spirit as Strengthener. Something used to give additional strength. In other words when trials get hard the Strengthener comes in to aid us in our time of weakness. (7) Standby: The role of the Holy Spirit as Standby: - "Standby" has a special meaning and application to us in this modern age. He stands by us at all times waiting for the first available opportunity to jump in and give us the help and strength we need—which is why He is also called our Helper, our Strengthener. He is someone that can be relied on when needed. The standby server may automatically take over, be ready to be called to work at a moment’s notice. So we have the Holy Spirit that does all of these things for us. What an eye opener! Sometimes we need to just take a step back from trying to solve our own problems and start relying on the Holy Spirit ….That is what He was sent here to do WORK (with) us! Don’t be left behind. Get in the flow. Allow the Holy Spirit to work through you. We are here to glorify God through the greater works Jesus spoke of. © Donna WilliamsRoss - In Trust Don’t just stand or sit there. Let’s show the unsaved Ministries and the unchurched the power we have on the inside dwilliamsross@ of us and be the Bride that Jesus is returning for. aol.com

“NOT ALWAYS GOLDEN” When what’s being called a “derecho” came through our area on
Friday, June 29th, and over 500,000 of us found ourselves without electricity, from several hours to seven days, it is more than probable that those of us who live with others found that we had to do a little more communicating with each other than normal. The convenience and, arguably, the crutches of television, radio, computers, and a myriad of other gadgets could no longer be relied on. Family members and friends were lovingly forced, not just to face each other, but to rediscover each other verbally. (And, in many instances, rediscover each other intimately. For example, it was reported by medical institutions that nine months after the blizzards of 2010 &11— which also resulted in widespread power outages—that there were definite spikes in deliveries in hospitals throughout the East Coast). Notwithstanding, and more to my point, sociologically speaking, we are failing, more and more in inter and intrapersonal communications. The past generation that was raised on SONY walkmans and earplugs has been replaced by our present generation of smartphone and tablet users who’ve shut themselves out under hoodies and with beats headphones. Further, why go through all the trouble of having to talk with anyone when it’s so much easier, and less personally intrusive, to email or text them? Indeed, such technologies have, in many instances, replaced one to one conversations. One of life’s great therapies is talking… talking as in sharing with others, conversationally. For hundreds of years, families have found comfort, answers, sanity, peace, fun, information, and so on, at tables, during meal times. Granted, at the risk of being idealistic, the family table is still a source for such, although it’s becoming more of a relic. Likewise, since the automobile became affordable, being in such a confined space gave opportunity for parents to dialogue with children, for couples to chat, and for children to interact. Of course, now, our cars are like our homes, replete with video and game players, satellite radio, and let us not forget the almighty cell phones with 46 August 2012 | Grace&Glory
Bluetooth, of course. People can ride for hundreds of miles in the same vehicle and never (have to) speak to each other. Mental health professionals have long sought to emphasize the power of talking. Pregnant mothers (parents) are advised to talk to their babies in utero. It is advised that we talk to strangers, in the right context, because they often have information we need. Students are advised to do more talking in classrooms, not just with teachers, but to interact with other students. Talking, or talking “it out” releases stress and anxiety even if occasionally one has to talk (out loud) to one’s self. In the 42nd Psalm, David talked to himself, asking himself why was his soul cast down?, etc. Then, he checked himself and decided that he would talk to God. By the time he was finished, he was praising God who had healed his countenance. Extrapolating on David, our slave mothers and fathers were able to bear better their burdens, knowing that although they were often silenced from talking to each other, they could talk to God. Would that anyone on the brink or edge of a crisis apply such spiritual therapy? Indeed, “just a little talk with Jesus makes it right.” It would seem that we are the recipients of an abundance of data/information. We are bombarded with alerts and pushes. However, we are finding ourselves being consumers as opposed to being “manufacturers.” And, it’s this phenomena and reality (depending on how one may look at it) that’s ever proving to be unhealthy. When we find ourselves internalizing, when we have no safe place to vent or persons to vent to, when we are holding more in than we’re letting out, we become time bombs ticking. Obviously, the extreme results of this are personified in the lives of the James Holmes’ (re: Aurora, CO, movie massacre), and others of our society, who are often described as loners, isolated, distant, quiet, and withdrawn. How often have we read or heard interviews of friends, acquaintances, or family members of mass murderers speaking of perpetrators in said terms? It sounds like a broken record (for those who remember records). “He kept to
himself.” “He didn’t say much.” Only to often subsequently discover manifestos, journals, and even blogs where such persons have dismissed the thought of sharing their frustrations and feelings with people, including professionals, and replaced such with written diatribes and sometimes even violent sketches that they’ve used to hide their innermost thoughts and feelings, keeping them secretly. One of my favorite scriptures, since high school, has been Isaiah 30:15b: “… in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength,…” as I have often been described as introverted, serious natured, quiet, etc. And, although if anyone appreciates “downtime” or a little solitude, I do, I know that I am a social creature. My (mental) health depends on some sense of balance between my natural persona and my adapted and learned social skills. In other words, there has to be a discovery of the importance of sharing with, communicating with, and even loving others in order to—simply put—fit in. Whether we like it, or not, our ability to be accepted, even though we maintain our individuality and personality, is predicated, at the very least, on being able to fit in. To the contrary, we have too often witnessed the tragic results of misfits. This brief analysis by no means is an attempt to excuse the deeds of James Holmes, Nidal Malik Hasan (re: Ft. Hood, TX, and an army psychiatrist), Seung-Hui Cho (re: VA Tech), or anyone else. Evil is a reality. However, this is an attempt to emphasize the necessity and importance of just plain, old talking. One of the joys of my upbringing, to this day, is the memory of just hearing my parents talking to each other… talking early in the morning, while fixing meals in the kitchen, etc. I confess, I have not always been good at it—I often stutter, and I often need time to process my thoughts—but I have developed an appreciation for the fact that contrary to how we’ve been taught the cliché, silence isn’t always golden.
