“The Lord is come. Let earth receive her king. Let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing.”
I
t’s Christmas. . . a time of good cheer and holiday festivities, a time for singing carols and celebrating with family and friends. Twinkling lights, gaily wrapped presents, laughing children, jingling bells, fresh-cut pine . . . these are the sights and sounds of Christmas. As the world celebrates the holiday may the true meaning of Christmas never be lost. The birth of Jesus is our reason for the season. The Son of God came to give us hope and peace, to show us his Father’s love and compassion for everyone. “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel; which being interpreted is, God with us.” Matthew 1:23 Christmas is all about seeing Jesus in every tradition, every celebration, and every moment of the Christmas season. So we will not “spend” Christmas . . . nor “observe” Christmas. We will “keep” Christmas . . . may we keep it in our hearts that we may be kept in its hope. The Christmas season comes at the end of the year and you may have mixed emotions about the year coming to a close. This year has been challenging for many of us, to say the least. But I encourage you, “Don’t Stop Believing.” Don’t focus on the year gone by, purpose in your mind to celebrate the season with your whole heart. Instead of focusing on the challenges, the heartbreaks, the setbacks, purpose in your mind to make this your best Christmas ever! This Christmas look up into the Father’s face and tell him you have received His Christmas gift . . . our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Eternal life and endless joy are parts of the gift. Christmas began in the heart of God. It is complete only when it reaches the heart of man. The best Christmas ever is not getting the perfect gift, it’s getting the true meaning of the season; the birth of Jesus! As believers we know Jesus is the reason for the season. This Christmas remember and celebrate the coming of our savior Jesus, the one who was chosen by God and sent with a purpose and destiny. This holiday season honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who was born to save all mankind and was sent to give us a hope and a future. Jesus Christ came that we might have everlasting life for all those who will believe. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ Editor-in-Chief the Lord.” Luke 2:11

Interview With
Past or Shawn L. Bell
G&G: Pastor Bell, welcome back. We are excited to talk with you again for this month’s cover feature. We have a lot to catch up on. Let’s talk about Greater Paradise Christian Center first. I understand the ministry is thirteen years old now; how would you describe where the ministry is at this point in time? Pastor Bell: Thank you for talking with me again! It’s always a pleasure speaking with you. Greater Paradise Christian Center (GPCC) is in a period of growth—within the church, our ministries, our members, and our separate entities. In fact, one of our campaigns has been “Come Grow With Us.” We are reaching out to potential members to grow on a holistic level—spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, and financially. G&G: Pastor Bell, to define your ministry, what would you say is your mantle in ministry, i.e. ministries that are healing ministries, prosperity ministries, deliverance ministries, etc. Pastor Bell: We have the core ministries
8 December December 2014 2014 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 8
of GPCC—men, women, children, and the fine arts—but my vision for GPCC is to be known as an outreach ministry. I believe when you involve your surrounding community, then healing, prosperity, and deliverance are no longer limited within the four walls of the church. As we focus our efforts within East Baltimore, and more specifically the Berea Community, we will be blessed by the effects at GPCC. G&G: Pastor Bell, have you ever been criticized for any of your work in this ministry? How did you handle the criticism? Pastor Bell: Thankfully, I have been criticized only a few times. The criticisms were from people who were operating in a traditional mindset and not willing to think outside of the box. I did not focus on the negativity; rather I focused on my assignment that I was given beforehand. G&G: Pastor Bell, describe an instance when you made attempts to reform the church ministry in some significant area. What were the results? Was there any opposition? Pastor Bell: I believe the greatest reform or change I made was my transition from the historical church and denomination to start GPCC. There were some practices and policies from my former denomination that I was able to embrace that I used to fragrance my current ministry. Yet, there was opposition from people who did not understand why I would leave
Q&A
a traditional church to start something new and operate under a new light. Their opposition helped in molding and defining the ministry. Overall, the results were that we have a strong, holistic ministry. G&G: Pastor Bell, how do you believe a pastor and his church should relate to Pastor Shawn L. Bell, Lady A. Faye Bell, other churches locally and Miss Olivia Bell to the larger body? Pastor Bell: All churches, whether big or small, should work together for the greater good. We are here to spread the message of the Lord. Rather than be in competition, we should be working together for the salvation of souls. We can do greater outreach by pooling our resources together. G&G: Pastor Bell, what is your missionary vision for the church? How are you currently demonstrating missionary interest and involvement? Pastor Bell: Our heart is in the growth of East Baltimore. Our mission is to uplift the residents and build the area to make it a prosperous community. I actively look for ways to invest in the area through economic empowerment and community development. In addition, I understand the value of community advocacy and outreach. Earlier this year, we partnered with a number of organizations for our community day. We were able to provide free groceries and cleaning supplies in partnership with the Maryland Food Bank, donate ready-togo school bags from our church members, and free haircuts and hairstyles from Paradise Touch Salon. Our ministries continue to serve the community by helping at local shelters on the weekends or serving holiday dinners to the homeless, like this past Thanksgiving Holiday. As our missions and outreach ministry continues to grow, my vision is to develop a community center for the residents of Baltimore. G&G: Pastor Bell, you shared with me that you have been a pastor for 23 years and you were pastoring your first church at the age of 18
years old. What do you see that concerns or encourages you in younger pastors? And what would you say to young ministers trying to "make their mark" in today’s society? Pastor Bell: I am so glad to see the number of young pastors and ministers. I see the hunger and the zeal to reach their peers in evangelism. Yet, one of the things that concern me with some of them is their lack of discipline in lifestyle, study habits, and respect to senior leadership. Overall, I am encouraged that God is fulfilling His prophecy that in the last days that God would pour out his spirit as is written in Joel 2. I see many teenagers receiving and accepting the call. I would tell them to stay faithful and committed to your current assignment. Then, they should be tailored in the outfit called integrity. G&G: Pastor Bell, why do you believe young adults are walking away from the church and/or religion? In what way do you see yourself as a role model for young aspiring ministers and young people in general? Pastor Bell: I do not believe they are walking away from religion; rather there is nothing there to attract them. We are not offering programs that fulfill the needs for young adults. We're competing with a variety of schedules, daily activities, and active lifestyles of the world. If we do not have activities to meet the needs and desires of young adults, then they will not come. I believe that I can be a role model for young people because I am constantly thinking outside of the box to be innovative and effective, but I will never forget my traditional values of honor, respect, and discipline. G&G: What aspect in life has most aligned you with who you are as a pastor? What have you learned about yourself after 23 years in ministry? Continued on Page 10

Q&A
Continued from Page 9
Pastor Bell: I have been blessed with many gifts and graces since early in my life. I know, however, that I have been tried and tested and came out victorious like Job. After my ministry grew and matured through the years, in one night it came crumbling down to ashes. I thought I was going to be defined by the devastation of the fire in June 2011, but now only three years later, I have double for my trouble. My congregation has double for their trouble. The fire refined us to pure gold. We continue to be living examples that God can trust you with trouble, and then He will bless you and all those connected to you. I know now that this is how I am defined as a pastor, as well as my entire congregation. G&G: Pastor Bell, what was the most valuable advice/wisdom you received from your mentors that you would like to share with the young pastors of today? Pastor Bell: I've had so many mentors speak into me with valuable words of wisdom for life and ministry. There are just too many to name. One of my favorites is to never try to fit in... be who God called you to be. The other is dreams do become a reality. Although I did say I would not say any names, I do find that I am always quoting my spiritual father, Archbishop Alfred A. Owens. He told me, “Keep a God you said in my pocket," and that has kept me going many nights. G&G: Pastor Bell, being almost 40 years old and knowing what you know now, if you could go back in time what would say to the 18 year old Shawn Bell? Is there anything that you would do differently? Pastor Bell: I would tell myself get delivered from negative people and their opinions. In addition, I would learn how to have tough skin. For all that I have gone through, I wouldn't change anything for my journey. My journey has made me the man, the husband, the father, and the pastor who I am today.
Ribbon cutting for Greater Paradise Cafe' Grand Opening
G&G: The businesses are two distinctly different ventures. Would you tell us about these two businesses, what they are, when they evolved, where they are located, etc.? Pastor Bell: Greater Paradise Café opened in September 2014. It is one of the few cafes in the East Baltimore area to offer an affordable and delicious eat-in/carry out experience with Southern flavor and hospitality. The cafe is known for its sweet potato biscuits. Paradise Touch Salon opened September 2013. Clients can relax in opulence while being served by some of the area's most talented hair professionals. Whether you want sleek and chic or a classy natural hairdo, our stylists have got you covered. We didn't forget about the men, and we made sure that we have the best barbers in Baltimore. Greater Paradise Café and Paradise Touch Salon are part of a faith-based initiative designed to help revitalize East Baltimore by providing services and employment resources for the local and surrounding communities. Both are located at 2900 East Oliver Street,
◆◆◆ G&G: Pastor Bell, let’s talk about Pastor Bell the entrepreneur. I understand the Greater Paradise Christian Center now has two businesses. Tell us about the vision that ignited the spark in you to start these two business ventures. Pastor Bell: One of my gifts is being blessed with economic empowerment. With that gift, I have been blessed with members in our ministry with skills and talents who have ignited me to help fulfill their calling and use their gifts. Greater Paradise Cafe'

Baltimore, MD 21213, Suite A and B respectively. G&G: Pastor Bell, how has being a business owner affected the life of the ministry? How do you balance the pastor with the entrepreneur? Pastor Bell: The entrepreneurial world has affected the church in such positive and phenomenal ways. The cafe and salon have attracted additional consumers from the professional business arena and the community to our congregation. Furthermore, more members have been inspired to fulfill the call and complete the vision that God Paradise Touch Salon has given them for opening their businesses. Balancing the life of the entrepreneur is not difficult for me because that is not my primary assignment. My first assignment is to do the work of ministry. That is my priority along with my family. Thankfully, I have been blessed with entrepreneurial-minded people to manage the businesses.
Pastor Bell: We are testing a couple of options in terms of business times, and we have had positive results and returns thus far. We will implement changes in the New Year to meet the demand of the consumer. G&G: Pastor Bell, will there be any more business ventures coming in the near future for Greater Paradise Christian Center? Pastor Bell: Our newest project is the community development center to meet the needs of the East Baltimore. We will have programs to engage and provide opportunities for older adults and active senior citizens. We will also focus on our youth by providing a variety of activities and programs to keep the City's youth off the streets. G&G: If you could go back in time five years, what decision would you make differently? What is your best guess as to what decision you're making today you might regret five years from now? Pastor Bell: I would have implemented a greater focus on discipleship and leadership development to meet the overwhelming demand of ministry. Five years from now, my greatest regret may be that I should have started my community development center earlier.
G&G: Pastor Bell, lastly before we let you go, would you share with us what you believe is on the heart of God during this advent season? G&G: Pastor Bell, do you believe there is a pattern or formula to Pastor Bell: God is calling his people to a season of intercession becoming a successful entrepreneur, particularly for Christian owned and prayer. God is calling his people back. "If my people, which are businesses? called by my name, shall humble Pastor Bell: As a Christian themselves, and pray, and seek entrepreneur, you must: my face, and turn from their 1. Follow the vision God gave you. wicked ways; then will I hear from 2. Align yourself with like-minded heaven, and will forgive their people who are experts in that industry. sin, and will heal their land." (2 3. Constantly stay in prayer. Chronicles 7:14 KJV) 4. Explore options to take risks. It will be a phenomenal year and the year of the conqueror. G&G: In the past few months, what "And I saw, and behold a white is the smallest change you have made horse: and he that sat on him to these businesses that has had the had a bow; and a crown was biggest positive result? What was it given unto him: and he went forth about that small change that produced Co-Pastor, Dr. Susie C. Owens, First Lady A. Faye Bell, Pastor Shawn L. Bell, conquering, and to conquer." The fresh anointing on Senior Pastor Shawn L. Bell, complemented with an insight in the revelation of God’s word, is touching the hearts of people around the country. It is very evident that God has raised Pastor Bell up to challenge the Body of Christ out of their complacency. With a perfect merging of foundational structure from both The Historic Church Of God In Christ and A.M.E. Zion Church, he continues to take people from destruction to their destiny, while carving a path to spiritual renewal. He began his education in the Gaston County (NC) Public School System, and later matriculated through the Livingstone College and Clinton College earning a degree in Liberal Arts. It is of greater knowledge to couple education with experience. At the tender age of 15, Pastor Bell ministered his initial sermon at Vestibule A.M.E. Zion Church (King’s Mountain, NC) under the tutelage of his Pastor and (natural) Father, The Reverend Cornelius Bell. Ordained and Pastoring in the A.M.E. Zion Reformation at 18, by the Bishop George Edward Battle, Jr., the pursuit of excellence was always a familiar mark set by Pastor Bell. God has afforded Pastor Bell, throughout the years, the opportunity to serve in various international areas; most notably he serves on the Board of Directors of Dr. Thomas A. Dorsey’s National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, which he was appointed by his spiritual mentor, the Late Bishop Kenneth H. Moales. Also, in 2010 Pastor Bell was elevated to the Office of International Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Mount Calvary Holy Church of America under the leadership of his beloved Spiritual Parents, Archbishop Alfred A. Owens and CoPastor Susie C. Owens (Senior Pastors and Establishmentarians of the Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church of Washington, DC). Pastor Bell travels extensively throughout the country ministering in conferences, worship celebrations and leadership seminars. His gifting is recognized by many key leaders of the world to be in the forefront of the apostolic and prophetic function within the Body of Christ. Pastor Bell is not only anointed to preach and 12 December 2014 | Grace&Glory

Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Luke 2:7-14
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 7

Walking in the Light Turning Community Challenges Into Community Resources by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
As your mayor, I am committted to growing Baltimore by 10,000 families over the next decade. I know that to make this happen, we must do more to encourage new residents to choose Baltimore as their home, and give current residents reasons to fall in love all over again with our unique and charming city. For residents, both new and old, a world-class transit system is a necessity. When we say “transit,” many often think about mass transportation options, rail projects or road infrastructure, but a twenty-first century transit system is, above all else, well-rounded. Last month, we celebrated the groundbreaking of yet another new transit option in Baltimore—a new Greyhound Intermodal Terminal. This 9,516 square foot facility will replace the existing temporary bus terminal on Haines Street. The modern, energy-efficient transit center will improve transit options for the citizens of Baltimore and beyond. I am so excited about the terminal’s potential to help us grow a more vibrant city. As you know, our eclectic neighborhoods and the people within them have always been our strength. But for decades, we have watched as thousands of properties were abandoned and thousands more fell into disrepair. To grow our city, we have to do more to strengthen our neighborhoods, and free them of blight. When I first became mayor, I was determined to redevelop Baltimore’s vacant properties more quickly, efficiently, and economically. Through programs like Vacants to Value and the Growing Green Initiative, we are working to make our city safer, stronger, and cleaner. Recently, we took another step toward realizing those objectives. For far too long, the sight of vacant houses along the Amtrak corridor in East Baltimore has been an eyesore for residents and travelers alike. Last month, I was thrilled to launch Green Tracks—a collaborative project that will eliminate blight and create new green spaces along Amtrak’s East Baltimore train tracks. Green Tracks will take advantage of strategically demolished vacant housing, connecting green space to ongoing revitalization projects throughout the surrounding neighborhoods such as the new Henderson-Hopkins School and homes that have been rehabilitated by the Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition (HEBCAC). By turning these community challenges into community resources, we will continue to cultivate neighborhoods that are free of blight and primed for future growth. We cannot grow a city by thinking small. We will continue to innovate and push the boundaries. I remain committed to investing in programs and projects that will create a stronger, more vibrant, and growing Baltimore. I wish you a very happy holiday season and a blessed New Year. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake publishes her “Walking in the Light” column each month in Grace and Glory Magazine. 16 December 2014 | Grace&Glory

Danette Ragin has two connections to donation: she is a kidney recipient and her nephew, 23 year old Martez, was a tissue and cornea donor. Danette was diagnosed with end stage renal disease in 2006 after 9 years of doctors keeping an eye on her kidney health. “I had no idea about the disease or the medical terms they used. All I knew was that I saw a nephrologist twice a year. I didn’t even know what a nephrologist was.” But one day, Danette was walking down the hall of the doctor’s office and her doctor stopped her and said hello to her by name. “He even knew when our next appointment was together. He sold me; he is a great and special person. He knew what to say to calm me down and to encourage me. He taught me what I needed to do. At the time, I was taking care of everyone but myself. My plate was too full. This was a sign that I needed to take care of myself if I wanted to be around to take care of others.” When Danette found out she had end stage renal disease she was in denial. “I didn’t hear anything else that the doctor said, just the words end stage renal disease.” So Danette didn’t hear her doctor say she would be placed on the transplant list. However, she loved her doctor and because they had a great relationship, she trusted him and she did everything the doctor told her to do. She went down to put her name on the transplant list and completed her 6 weeks of tests in 2 weeks. “I was determined. My doctors all worked hand
in hand and made everything as easy as it could be.” In June 2008, Danette had her transplant. Three short years later in 2011, Danette was reconnected to donation when her nephew, just 23, was shot and killed. “They called me to deal with the donation questions because my family knew I had the transplant and understood it. Martez was a tissue and cornea donor due to his injuries. He had a 7 month old son, Jamari. It was devastating. Martez was a typical young man, very quiet and respectful. He had a group of friends and some of them got into trouble but Martez always knew when to go home. He wasn’t a bad boy.” In the midst of her pain and suffering, Danette wanted Martez to help others. “I have an extended warranty on life, my nephew died but our family could give someone else an extended warranty on life now too. I prayed and asked God to let me see my kids graduate, get married and have children of their own. Now, both of my daughters are married and I am expecting my first grandchild in January 2015. I’m so blessed.” To learn more about organ, eye and tissue donation go to www.donatelifemaryland.org.

Better Choices, Better Results by Governor Martin O’Malley I recently joined Vice President Biden and members of President Obama’s State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience to make recommendations on how to best empower communities across the nation to respond effectively to the effects of climate change. Maryland is among the states most vulnerable to climate change and we have an obligation to do all we can to prepare and protect our land, infrastructure, and most importantly our citizens. The Task Force identified additional actions that the federal government can take to build climate resilience, such as integrating climate change considerations into federal grant and loan programs, and improving the availability and reliability of climate data and tools. Reducing our vulnerability to climate change will help us build a stronger, more sustainable future for generations to come. It’s one of the reasons why we’ve set nation-leading goals to better prepare our State. Four of our Administration’s 16 strategic goals are focused on driving down carbon emissions. Those goals are to: • increase Maryland’s in-state renewable generation to 20% by 2022; • reduce Maryland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020; • reduce both per capita peak demand and per capita electricity consumption in Maryland by 15% by 2015; and • double transit ridership in Maryland by the end of 2020. I’m pleased that the Senate rejected the Keystone XL Pipeline recently – a project that would produce too much carbon dioxide and too few jobs. We need a jobs agenda that meets our climate challenge, with solutions that simultaneously reduce carbon emissions and create jobs, and that invest in innovation to harness the potential of renewable energy. It's also time to build a national renewable energy grid; one that would both create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and reduce emissions. With a bold focus on renewable energy, we can solve these problems, unleash America's innovative spirit, and re-invigorate American economic dynamism. In addition to preparing our State for the effects of climate change, we’re also committed to restoring the health of the

Chesapeake Bay. And we recently proposed new Maryland Phosphorus Management Tool (PMT) regulations to the Maryland General Assembly. We're focused on results and doing what works, and we know that animal waste is the most significant phosphorus pollution source harming the Chesapeake Bay and rivers on the Eastern Shore. So we're moving forward with tools -- endorsed by scientists and experts across the State -- that will play a key role in restoring the health of the Bay. This work is part of our larger mission to prevent nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment pollution from entering waterways. The phosphorous management tool is just the latest in our efforts to preserve and protect the Bay. We’re also planting more cover crops, adding stormwater retrofits to remove harmful pollutants, and establishing natural filters across the State. We continue to work towards reaching a healthier Bay tipping point by 2025. We have an obligation to take actions that create a stronger watershed for growing our economy, a healthier environment, and a greener future with greater opportunities for our children. Together, we can make the tough choices and smart investments to ensure that our State is prepared for climate change while restoring the health of the Bay for generations to come.

Saving for college is possible, and affordable. Life gets busy and before you know it, your children are college age. Unfortunately, between booties, football cleats and pom poms finding the time, and money, to save for college can be difficult. It’s possible that you’ve decided that saving isn’t an option for you, and that you’ll rely on student loans or some other miracle later on. Or, if your kids are older, you’ve decided that there isn’t enough time to save. Regardless of where you are with saving, or how old your children are, remember it’s never too early, or too late, to get started. Here are some reasons why:
• Any savings large or small helps
reduce the amount you need to borrow. Every dollar you save, is one less you may have to borrow and repay with interest later. Even a few thousand dollars less in loans can make a difference. If you save $200 a month for four years, assuming a 6% return, that could amount to about $10,820. If you were to borrow this money instead of saving, you’d have to repay that amount, with interest.* When you save, the interest is paid to you, while when you borrow, you pay the interest
• Tax benefits! Maryland Taxpayers can get up to a $2500 income deduction on contributions annually per account or child depending on the Plan. The Prepaid College Trust and the College Investment Plan are the only 529 plans that offer Maryland tax benefits. Based on estimates from the State comptroller, that can be about $190 State and local tax savings per $2,500 income deduction.** So, even if there isn’t a lot of time for growth potential, the income deduction could mean a couple hundred dollars more in your pocket each year.
To learn more go to CollegeSavingsMD.org/webinar.
• Savings can be used at eligible
institutions across the country. Generally speaking, if the school has a federal school code, the Plans can be used. So, that means four-year colleges in or out-of-state, twoyear colleges and even trade/technical schools. So, don’t assume it’s too late, or that you can’t afford to save for college. You can still have an impact on how much debt your student will need to take. Saving for college (no matter how late you start) can make a difference. The College Savings Plans of Maryland has two State-sponsored 529 college savings options to choose from—the Maryland College Investment Plan and the Maryland Prepaid College Trust. The Plans offer affordable and flexible options to help fit nearly any budget. You can start with as little as $25 per month. Regardless of when you start, every dollar saved is one less you may need to borrow. 22 December 2014 | Grace&Glory
Enrolling in the College Savings Plans of Maryland is an important decision for you and your family. Please read the entire Enrollment Kit carefully before deciding to enroll. The Enrollment Kit is available online or by calling 888.4MD.GRAD (463.4723). Section 529 plans offered by other states may offer tax or other benefits to taxpayers or residents of those states that are not available under the College Savings Plans of Maryland. If you live outside of Maryland, you should consider any college savings program offered by your home state or your Beneficiary’s home state prior to making a decision to invest in the College Savings Plans of Maryland. Keep in mind that state-based benefits should be one of many appropriately weighted factors to be considered when making an investment decision. In addition, you should periodically assess, and if appropriate, adjust your Section 529 plan investment choices with your time horizon, risk tolerance and investment objectives in mind. *This is for illustrative purposes only. **Note that this is a hypothetical scenario and the amount of savings from your income deduction may vary.
It only takes one small step to save for your child’s college education.
Start saving now with as little as $25 a month. • Two affordable Plans—choose one or both • Use the Plans at colleges nationwide • Get exclusive Maryland State tax benefits each year you contribute

A different kind of
Christmas
Matthew 25:35-36 “For I was hungry and you gave Me
My favorite season is upon us. The season we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus and the gift of redemption God gave to us. Christmas has been reinvented over the years and has food; I was thirsty and become more commercialized if celebrated at all. It has been replaced with the general term you gave Me drink; I ‘holiday season’ so that those who are not Christian can participate without the religious connotations. Christians have even bought into the commercialism by decreasing their tithes was a stranger and and offerings in December, in order to ‘have a good Christmas’, forgetting that all we have belongs to God. James reminds us that, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming you took Me in; I down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17) While we have shifted our focus to material goods, food and fun, we should also was naked and you be reminded that Jesus is the reason for the season. clothed Me; I was sick Our church, family, and social organizations may have fellowships with one another, but we should do so with the mission of Jesus in mind. We can collect food, clothes, toys and and you visited Me; I toiletries for the needy among us. We can visit the sick, invite the lonely to dinner, encourage someone who will be celebrating without a loved one this year and the list continues. This was in prison and you would be a different kind of Christmas and fulfill Matthew 25:35-36, “For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me came to Me.” in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.” Christians should be taking the lead in spreading love and joy this Christmas season thereby sharing the Good News of Jesus. How did Jesus show love in action? How did he show his generosity? By feeding the hungry, eating with tax collectors and sinners, healing lepers and the sick, blessing children and participating in things that his critics and even his disciples questioned. Celebrate a different kind of Christmas this year by spreading the joy of Jesus to not only those we are familiar with but with those who may not be in the Spirit. Those whose circumstances may be hindering their joy; and celebrating what’s left is difficult when they have lost so much. Be a blessing this year and instead of asking persons, “What did you get for Christmas?” ask them, “What did you give?” 26 December 2014 | Grace&Glory

woman’s perspective
If we turn on the television and watch just one hour of programming, by the end of it as women we will have been bombarded with tons of messages. Most of them will be subtle yet powerful. They will tell us how we need to dress and behave to be beautiful, accepted, appreciated and wanted at every age. Regardless of our age there will be some message that tells us we aren’t good enough and need to alter ourselves. If we are not careful as women of God we buy into those messages and conform to the secular standard of worth. However, we must recognize as Godly women our value and worth is innately connected to our Father and His likeness in us. No matter our age, we are beautiful, accepted, appreciated and wanted because of the grace of God. Though our focus, desires, skills, abilities and goals may change over the years; regardless of our age we shine like the crowns we are because of the Spirit of God on the inside of us. There are three phases that we will pass through and at each phase we are to be a reflection of Him. 1. PREPARING – Ecclesiastes 2:1 tells us, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come…” There is an absolute beauty and grace to serving God while you are still young. Most of us if we are honest can look back at decisions made in our youth and see their major impact on our adulthood. What a blessing it is to discover a relationship with God while you are young and allowing God to shape your youth. This passage says to serve him “before the difficult days come.” This is hard to comprehend as a youth but as an adult it is easy to grasp. There are many of us who would love to trade places even just for a day with our younger selves and return to days where bills, relationships, children, careers, et cetera were not on our minds. For all of my little sisters out there I urge you to take heed to this passage. Remembering God in your youth will preserve you for the rest of your life. It will keep you! And you can have fun in God, it will not be boring. However it will be the kind of fun that you can have and still be able to look in the mirror without shame. It pays to serve God while you are young! 2. POSITIONING – As you come of age and continue to walk with God He brings you to a place of positioning. After you have been reared and been impacted by the legacies before you comes the time when you 28 28 December December2014 2014||Grace&Glory Grace&Glory
must begin to create your own. Proverbs 31:16-17 in The Living Bible says, “She goes out to inspect a field and buys it; with her own hands she plants a vineyard. 17 She is energetic, a hard worker…” It is God’s desire that we allow Him to lead every area of our lives and reflect Him and His glory. As godly women we don’t have to focus solely on our exterior. If we fully surrender and allow God to position us in the center of His purpose, the glory that will shine in us will attract all that we need in our lives and more. We must be diligent about seeking God’s purpose for us and allow Him to establish us spiritually, mentally, emotionally, financially, and socially. This will give us the greatest sense of worth, validation, and significance. 3. POURING – Proverbs 31 describes to us the ideal woman as God describes her; verse 25 says something very powerful. The Living Bible tells us, “…she has no fear of old age.” One of the messages most targeted to women is that youth is beautiful and older age isn’t as beautiful. We go through great lengths to appear forever young instead of embracing the beauty and season of older age. Titus 2:3-4 gives us the perfect illustration of the grace that we need from older women. There is nothing more beautiful and graceful than experience. Younger women today are especially in need of valuable lessons from the seniors among us. As women we can’t be afraid of aging for fear that we aren’t as attractive and needed. The longer we live, in essence, perhaps the more we are truly stunning from the inside out. Ladies we must reflect God’s glory and virtue at every age. We have to redefine the secular standard of beauty, value and significance and let the glory of God inside of us to cause us to truly stand out from youth to maturing.

single life
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6-8
The Christmas season brings the celebration of the birth of Christ, the remembrance of his historical birth and the joy of family. It is the season filled with celebrations, family gatherings, office dinners, home-made pies, and a time that many reflect upon the events of the year. For some singles, this time of year may present with emotional triggers and others may dance right through this season with joy and contentment. Every person that is single will move through this month in their own way, but it is important to move through the season and be a successful single. There were times in my single season that the holidays would trigger emotional feelings that had a toll on my state of mind. Yes, a Christian with a decent understanding of the word of God, yet, human enough to have emotional triggers that could be set off as I walked through the mall hearing the holiday music or maybe it was attending that office holiday party – “party of one” for yet another year. Even if I felt that I was in a great emotional state, often times the silent conversation of others trying not to offend me with awkward “couple conversation” would be just the thing that set off my emotional triggers. The fact was that the emotional triggers were real and sometime strong. I learned not to ignore these triggers but face them head on with the word of God. I would enjoy when others, especially married people would offer advice such as, “Just ignore your feelings or just pray about your triggers”. I know their intensions were well meaning and soon I learned that I could pray, and if I had not faced my triggers I may have to face them again. I did not know that I needed to pray the word of God and not just cry out emotionally before God. There is a time to cry out before God and then there is a time to pray the word. I soon learned that in the word of God there was a scripture for every emotional trigger that would come my way. I learned to find a scripture for my situation and use it against the emotions that would try to take my peace of mind. Once I realized that every trigger I faced was ultimately trying to steal my peace, the fight became much easier. 30 December December 2014 2014 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 30
For a child has been born—for us! the gift of a son—for us! He’ll take over the running of the world. His names will be: Amazing Counselor, Strong God, Eternal Father, Prince of Wholeness. Isaiah 9:6-8 (Message) The revelation came from this scripture that a child was born for me! The birth of a child represents “new”. The gift of a son was given for me! God gave a gift to me and for me and it was a relational gift. A son represents the relationship that God desires to have with me. Now it gets even better! The gift that is given to me will take over the running of the world and then the description of my gift is broken down even the more. Amazing, Counselor, Strong God, Eternal Father, Prince of Wholeness!! So just when I think I am emotionally broken, I see in the word of God that my gift is my Prince of Wholeness. No more emotional triggers trying to take over my life, since my gift is the Prince of Wholeness. My brokenness, my loneliness, my pain, my fears and my rejection can rest because the Prince of Peace, the Prince of Wholeness is my gift. Here’s a confession to carry you during the holiday season: My peace will not be broken during this holiday. I understand that Jesus, my gift was given just for me. I will walk in wholeness. I will walk in peace. I will face every emotional trigger during this with the wonderful counselor, the strong God. My gift is amazing!! So this year, open the gift of Jesus and embrace your Prince of Peace in your single Dr. Monique Flemings season. Happy Holidays from our family to yours!! Ways to Instill Self-Worth IN YOUR TEEN Whether we realize it or not, we have a huge impact on our teen's sense of self-worth. In fact, parents with poor self-esteem usually translate their insecurities to their children, while parents with strong self-esteem usually raise children who view themselves positively. That means you need to be your teen's greatest champion. Here are 12 ways to cheer him on.
Encourage proper identity
Teens experience pressure to succeed at an early age. As a result, they can grow discouraged or feel like they can't measure up to our hopes or their own goals. Encourage your teen to base her self-worth on who she is in Christ, not what she does. Let her relationship with Christ be her chief identifier.
Listen
him. Avoid using prayers to address problems in a round-about way. Let your prayers be affirming and filled with blessings and gratitude for your teen.
Discover spiritual gifts
Helping your teen discover her spiritual gifts is a great way to boost her self-esteem. Your church may even provide an assessment of spiritual strengths.
As parents, we often talk "at" our teens rather than taking the time to listen to them. Cultivate the art of listening. Avoid formulating a mental comeback while your teen is speaking, but really listen to discern fears and emotions behind his words. Let your teen know you are available any time she wants to talk.
Cultivate a sense of heritage
Validate feelings and opinions
Provide decision-making opportunities
It's really hard to live in a house where opinions aren't valued and where you're not allowed to express emotion. Consider having family forums - times of discussion that involve all family members. Let each family member have a voice.
Console and comfort
Your teen may be having some emotional battles at school or in relationships. Each teen faces these challenges differently. Remember that what seems insignificant to you could be a crisis to her.
Notice strengths and downplay weaknesses
It's easy to view life critically, constantly pointing out the negatives and rarely recognizing the good. Not only does this undermine self-worth, but it also models a critical spirit they are likely to adopt as adults. Instead, compliment the things he is going right.
Bless with touch
As children grow, we tend to stop touching them. This creates distance, and they wonder if they still matter. Just because your teen is older doesn't mean she no longer needs your touch.
Pray aloud
Nothing makes a teen feel more special than hearing his parents pray for 32   December 2014 | Grace&Glory
Feeling a connection to "roots" (both genetically and spiritually) helps teens develop a sense of identity and enhances self-worth. Share strengths, weaknesses, and spiritual stories from your family in an effort to teach and train your teen. Teens learn by making decisions and experiencing consequences. Providing your teen with decision-making opportunities sends the message that you trust him. After all, it's better to let him test his decision-making skills at home than later at college.
Don't harp on body image
The world sends the message that unless you are one of the "beautiful people" you are no one. Help your teen build a sense of self-worth from something other than what her body looks like. Model healthy eating and exercise habits, but resist the urge to criticize your own body or your teen's.
Say 'I love you' often and mean it
Let every greeting and every parting include an "I love you," even when you are angry with your teen. Regardless of the circumstances, these teens are a precious heritage and a gift from God. Try some of these words of affirmation with your teen. "I appreciate you because..." "I was pleased to see you..." "I want to thank you for..." "You blessed me when..." Your verbal praise will raise your teen's sense of self-worth.

“Enjoy this review of Seeking Allah. Finding Jesus written by my friend Siobhan Saulsbury.” – Brandie
Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus By Nabeel Qureshi Have you ever thought about what it “cost” you to be a believer? Did you have to turn away from everything you knew to be true? Have you lost friends or family members because of your belief in Christ? Well, I recently read Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, a touching story of one man’s spiritual journey from Islam to Christianity and these are some of the questions it brought to my mind. In his book, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, Nabeel Qureshi shares his testimony about growing up as a devout, peaceful Muslim with a loving, supportive family and eventually coming to love and follow Jesus Christ. Nabeel invites the reader into the home of a Muslim family beginning with the day of his birth. This helps believers who read the account of his conversion understand how and why some Muslims think and believe the way they do. One thing that really stood out to me while reading this book was the fact that Nabeel had to have a personal relationship with a Christian before he could even really begin to listen to what they had to say. He never felt like any Christian cared about him. Many times, we as believers just know that we’re right and everyone else is wrong and that’s our motivation for “witnessing” when it should really be coming from a 34 December 2014 | Grace&Glory
place of love. How much easier would it be to share your faith, if the people you were sharing it with only felt love and acceptance in your presence rather than condescension and self-righteousness? Wow! Another great takeaway from Nabeel’s story is the conveyance of the great sacrifice it is for a Muslim to accept Christ. Unlike many professed Christians these days, being a Muslim isn’t about a visit to a mosque once or twice a week. It is the very fabric of your life and to turn your back on that is to rip apart all you’ve ever known! Living in a society like we do that is fairly accepting of Christianity, whether we believe or not doesn’t seem like much of a big deal. Some
of us were raised in the church. Some of us became followers of Christ as teenagers and some are just beginning their walk with the Lord as adults... but what did it cost you? I feel so grateful to be a part of a family who believes in Jesus and taught me to do the same. I didn’t have to change my entire life. In my case, Jesus made the biggest sacrifice and did all the hard work! Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is a wonderful, heart-felt story that shows how God is all-powerful and working in the lives of His people. Reading the book is great, but for an even better experience I suggest listening to the audiobook, because it’s read by the author and you can just feel the emotion behind his words. This story is a beautiful reminder that God loves you way too much to leave you where you are. He longs to be in a relationship.

10 Quick Ideas
. . . for Weight Loss and Ways To Take Your Health Back!
By Herline A. Knights, RD, LD
1. Stash Fruit in your work bag, lunch box, car or anywhere you may find yourself hungry. 2. Avoid Drinking Calories from specialty coffees, soda, shakes and you will save at least 300 – 500 calories per drink 3. Snack During the Day choose healthy foods such as nuts, cheese sticks, Greek yogurt, raisons, vegetables, hard-boiled egg, or a small handful of whole wheat crackers and this will not only provide good nutrition but keep you full longer. 4. Divorce Fast Food as portions are too large, the food is full of fat, calories and chemicals. 5. Use Smaller Plates and Bowls to reduce calories as we have a tendency to fill up a plate or bowl when we eat. Try a 6 oz bowl and 7 inch plate (most plates are 9 inches). 6. Divide Your Plate into 3 sections: ½ of the plate = fill with vegetables and fruits ¼ of the Plate = fill with a starch ¼ of the plate = fill with a lean meat (not fried) 7. Turn Your Back on Extra Calories that will add unplanned calories from gravy, butter, fried foods, candy, chips. 8. Plan Ahead and control what you eat at home, at work and when going out with friends or a movie. 9. Love your Friends but Do Not Be Tempted by them as you are changing your eating habits and they may not be. 10. Exercise is key and walking at work is not enough. Try a 30 minute walk most days and increase as you can. Remember! Walk Fast! 36 December 2014 | Grace&Glory

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) In the Book of Isaiah, the proclamation is made about our Savior. His name is Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, and The Prince of Peace. Two of the meanings of Wonderful are (1) exciting and (2) unusually good. Our God is an exciting God. Exciting in such a way that we too can get excited about the things that are happening in our lives. "I am being challenged right now.” You may say, “There is nothing in my life to get excited about.” Oh yes there is. In James 1:2-4 it says, "Count it all joy when you fall into different temptations knowing that the trying of your faith produces patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." Our thoughts are not His thoughts and our ways not His ways, so it becomes exciting to see what He is going to do in various aspects of our lives. He is working all things together for our good regardless of how it looks and that is exciting to know -- Good News. Our God is unusually and exceptionally good. In fact our God, is awesome. How many people do you know in your life that is unusually good? Your God is a good God. Psalm 25:8 says, “Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.” He is so good that in spite of knowing all the presumptuous things that we do He loves us anyway. Now that is a good God. Two of the meanings of Counselor are (1) a person who gives advice (2) one that gives advice in law and manages cases for clients in court. No only does God through His Precious Holy Spirit give us advice that leads us in the right direction and to make godly choices, but like an attorney He manages our cases when satan attacks us. Isn't it wonderful to know that we serve a God who has never lost a case? He is our Advocate -- Satan is the accuser of the brethren. However, God is ever present to defend us when satan accuses us. Two meanings of Everlasting are (1) lasting or enduring through all time [eternal] and (2) continuing long or indefinitely. The 38 38 December December2014 2014||Grace&Glory Grace&Glory
Everlasting Father – The Eternal One. From everlasting to everlasting He changes not. To have a Father that will never die, never forsake us or even condemn us. What a refreshing thought and reality. Before the foundation of the world God knew you and loved you. After this world has passed away God will not stop loving you. There are people in the world that says God loves them too much to let them go to hell. But it is because He loves us so much that He gives us the free will to choose or not choose Him. In Deuteronomy 30:19 – “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life that both thou and thy seed may live.” He is our Everlasting Father and desires to spend eternity with you and me. We all have had earthly fathers who may have disappointed us, neglected us, abused us emotionally, verbally or mentally, but we have a Father that never disappointed, neglected or abused us. Now, that’s Good News. Do not just be excited at the fact that Jesus was given to be our Lord and Savior. He was given to us to build His Kingdom prepared for us before the foundation of the world. Let His Kingdom come in your life and then let others know that we are not in a religion, but we are Kingdom builders. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior know that truly Jesus was born to die for your sins. If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today know that He is waiting for you to make Him the Lord of your life. He loves you so very much. Know that He gave His life for yours. Today I encourage you to reflect upon the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Know that beyond the shadow of a doubt Jesus is the reason for this season. Prayer: Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for the birth of Your Son, Jesus. I thank You for sending Him to the cross for my sins. I am eternally grateful. I thank You also Father that I am a Kingdom builder and I purpose to work in Your Kingdom until You return in victory, amen. On behalf of In Trust Ministries, we wish each and every one of you a wonderful Christmas and remember that Jesus is the reason for this season. God’s blessings to all.

In 1963, Andy Williams recorded and released Eddie Pola’s and George Wyle’s It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year. Today, it continues to be a Christmas anthem of sorts—a popular song that is played while shoppers crowd malls, fill their carts, and empty their coffers of treasure. But what makes the days anchored between Thanksgiving and January 1st the most wonderful time of the year? Could it be the excitement of presents awaiting us under the tree? Or, maybe it’s the anticipation of the close of a year fraught with circumstances that seemed to frustrate us more than develop our faith in and dependence on God? Perhaps it’s the dawning of a new year that is pregnant with possibilities and great expectations. But lest we forget the Christ of Christmas, consider Isaiah’s prophetic declaration – “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Chapter 9 verse 6). Further still, Matthew writes this comforting truth – “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means God with us” (Chapter 1 verse 23). From these passages it is clear that even before his birth, The Christ of Christmas had purpose. And having been predestined with purpose, even his name was purposeful. Having embarked upon this season of perpetual hope, love, and joy, may we be ever-mindful of yet another central theme that undeniably makes this the most wonderful time of the year. As Isaiah called him the Prince of Peace, and Matthew encourages us with the reality that he is God with Us, it is the peace of God – that which cannot be fully grasped by the finite human mind (Philippians 4:7) – that rests, rules, and abides with us – not only during this season, but all year long. For many, 2014 has been anything but peaceful. African Americans and others concerned with issues of social justice might recall the months of July, August, and September as communities mourned the senseless deaths of unarmed Black men of which Mike Brown, Eric Garner, and John Crawford, III are only a few. And, the reality that the perpetrators of these heinous atrocities have yet to be brought to justice continues to incite fear and even anger in the hearts of young people and those who love them. Where is the peace? Fast forward to October when news outlets from Connecticut to California broadcasted the all-too-familiar tragedy of yet another school shooting that prematurely claimed the lives of five adolescents at the hands of one of their own in a Seattle high school. From the gruesome beheadings of men and women at the hands of ISIS, to threats of a virus that senselessly cuts short the lives of 42 December 2014 | Grace&Glory
our sisters and brothers in Africa, certainly we must ask ourselves, where is the peace? But yet even in these times, although we can’t see him and might not feel his presence, we remember his name – God with Us. Of all of the wonderful elements of the Christmas Story, perhaps there is none more comforting than the Christ-child’s humble entrance into the world. More than anything else, what speaks peace to our lives and situations is found in the controversial circumstances that precipitated the birth of Christ (Matthew 1:18-24). Jesus, the Prince of Peace, was born to a young mother who was not married to his father. Jesus, God with Us, was born outdoors amongst animals in a lowly Bethlehem manger. But despite these things, peace is found in knowing that the most significant person in history, who was born into circumstances that were far from ideal, remains with us today. As a child, I vividly remember that my pastor’s favorite passage of scripture was Psalm 46. In only 11 verses, the psalmist confidently declares that regardless of his present circumstance, he is not alone because God is with him. Regardless of the impending attacks against his city (e.g., wars and rumors of war), there is no need to fear because God is with him. Hastening to the end, the psalmic division comes to a climatic close with this most-powerful and concluding verse: The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. As it was then, so it is today: The ever-present help in times of trouble is Jesus—God with Us! Be encouraged with these words by Kandela Groves – He is our peace, who has broken down every wall, He is our peace, he is our peace. Cast all your cares on him, for he cares for you, He is our peace, he is our peace. May you and your loved ones be overwhelmed with the peace of the Christ of Christmas – God with Us – today and forevermore. Happy Christmas.
