“Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so. Yes Jesus loves me, yes Jesus loves me, yes Jesus loves me for the Bible tells me so.” If there is any doubt in your mind if you are loved this Valentine’s Day, let me help you out. There is someone who loves you unconditionally. This someone loves you through thick and then, come what may. They even love you no matter what you look like or what your profession or vocation may be. How about this, it is a love that looks beyond your faults, your shortcomings or when you miss the mark. And guess what you do not have to do anything for this love. You can’t buy it, you can’t earn it. It is a love that is there to accept and embrace . . . a love beyond measure. Do you have any idea how much God loves you? I mean do you really know the scope and depth of the love of God? The scripture tells us that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. (Romans 8:34-36) Isn’t that kind of love incredible? God loves us beyond measure. It is hard to comprehend a love beyond measure. Generally speaking we have experienced love in many different forms. We’ve experienced the love of our parents and our siblings. We’ve experienced the love of a significant other, our spouses and the love of our children. We’ve even experienced the love of friends, colleagues, church members, etc. But there is nothing that can compare to the love that God has for us.
Sometimes there are those who experience some sadness at Valentine’s Day thinking that no one loves them enough to send flowers or buy gifts and dinner for them. While it is nice to celebrate those who have a special place in our hearts on Valentine’s Day, it does not mean that if you do not receive some expression of love on that day that you are not loved. This Valentine’s Day choose to embrace it with joy and happiness, as a reminder of how much God loves you and His unselfish act of love towards you. “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal live.” (John 3:16) Spend the day thinking about how God loves you beyond measure. Use that day to reflect upon the many ways God has shown you how much He loves you through His word. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Q&A interview
Interview With
Dr. Donte’ L. Hickman Southern Baptist Church Baltimore, Maryland 21213
G&G: Welcome Dr. Hickman to our annual Black History Month issue. We look forward to talking with you each year in recognition of Black History Month. First bring us up to speed as it relates to the Southern Baptist Church, it looks like the Southern Baptist Church has made huge strides in the history of the church with its new location in Harford County. Dr. Hickman: On September 12, 2010, through God inspired leadership, I extended the church’s outreach to global evangelism, by launching the first multi-site location named Southern Baptist Church – Harford County in the Regal Bel Air movie theater. In just five short months, we have outgrown the 325 seat worship space. On February 6, 2011 we will move into our expanded worship space at Aberdeen High School that has an 800-seat auditorium that we will worship in and classroom space which will allow us to implement our Children’s Church and early morning discipleship program. G&G: Dr. Hickman let’s jump right in since you are no stranger to the Grace & Glory readers. We are all aware that the month of February is set aside to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans. I think we should also assess each year where we are as a race of people. What do you see as the most important issue, or issues, facing the African American community today? Dr. Hickman: In my opinion the most important issue facing the African-American community today is vision. We still don’t have a clear sense of communal purpose and productivity. Freedom and equality necessitate accountability to dream and aspire to actualize our potential. While all hindrances to our success have not dissipated, it has been proven that no obstacle is insurmountable. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream of equal opportunity for all people. We must now seize those opportunities by learning to see beyond our past success, our painful memories, and our temporal possessions into what the Spirit of God is revealing to us today.
8 February February 2011 2011 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory 8
G&G: Dr. Hickman to what extent should African Americans be assigned responsibility for issues plaguing their communities such as teenage moms, absent fathers, gangs, the idea some kids have adopted that to become educated means you’re becoming white? Dr. Hickman: This is not a new problem in our communities, but it is one that I feel is more polarized by entertainment media. Our kids are both brilliant and bored. They are not being cultivated to expose and enhance what they do know and have a passion for. I think in many instances the societal culture that we live in has boxed them in and repressed them to stereotypes and myths. BET and MTV have become their models for living and relating. Glorified gangsta movies have stimulated their lower nature to embrace that as the cultural norm that is readily accessible and attainable as opposed to higher more revered expectations. More in my generation have to step to the plate and model success as faithfulness, humility, and love above materialism and self-gratification. G&G: Dr. Hickman, do you believe that many of the challenges facing African Americans today are more subtle and involve a struggle that is more within the African American community than without. Many of these challenges involve fighting negative stereotypes that were born from hip hop videos or the misuse of power and authority by well-known figures in the African American community. Dr. Hickman: I believe all human struggles are really spiritual struggles. Until a person embraces their spirituality in God they will never be able to manifest love of self and fellow man. Who we are ultimately is not determined by externalities alone but who we seek inwardly and upwardly. We are not merely products of our environment. We are products of our passion. Motivation comes from within and only needs minimal exposure to be birthed into an unstoppable force. G&G: Dr. Hickman let’s talk about the plight of our young African American teens. It appears in many communities that our young people are a lost cause. The statistics of African American teens in the federal prisons are staggering. The number of senseless murders is heartbreaking. What do you think is the root of this out of control violent behavior, is it self-
Q&A interview
esteem issues, poverty, violent video games, low educational attainment, etc? Dr. Hickman: This behavior cannot be viewed in a vacuum or in isolation from the contributing factors of generational baggage and bondage. Our children suffer from lack of parental maturity, guidance, and discipline. Many of our children today were born to children who were born to children who never passed down responsibility, respect, nor regard for human life and legacy. There has to be a retooling, retraining, and restoration of the black family. At the center of our historically strong and stable communities were prayerful, productive families that cultivated self-esteem and demanded achievement. G&G: Can the destructive behavior of our young people be turned around? What should be the role of the church in finding solutions? What about the notion of curfews for teens, do you believe curfews would help keep teens out of trouble?
Dr. Hickman: The church must creatively and courageously confront our people with a message that inspires vision and spiritual awareness. To do this we must be willing to be human enough to empathize and spiritual enough to exemplify how people can succeed after failing. We must take a deeper look with love into the issues surrounding the behavior and address them directly. I don’t believe rules will heal our young people like genuine loving relationships can. G&G: Dr. Hickman, I understand that you have formed a partnership with one of the prison facilities in Baltimore. What are your goals for this partnership and how will it serve the community at large? Dr. Hickman: We were blessed to have been asked by the prison system to partner in the effort of not merely rehabilitation but restoration. There is a growing population of inmates who view our television ministry broadcast through Grace and Glory. Therefore, we have begun this process of restoration by simulcasting our New Year’s Eve services into the prison. We will also be registering inmates into our Growing Committed Disciples Institute and each one will be adopted by a family in our church to provide them with the resources to learn the word of God with us. We are also planning to do a “Man Up” conference within the walls of the penal institution. God is good. G&G: Lastly Dr. Hickman, another serious and long standing issue within the African American community is broken families. Single-parent households are common Despite that African Americans favor traditional American values about family and marriage. Should this issue be a concern of the church body, how can the church body assist in mending our broken families? Dr. Hickman: I am a product of a single parented home. I have two younger sisters. My mother with the help of God, family, and community raised us to excel beyond the statistics. We all have surpassed graduate level degrees despite our environmental and parental setbacks. The ability to achievements are not based on assets but access. The church is a major proponent to empowering individuals and families through modeling healthy character and communities. My personal goal is to reflect and reinforce traditional African-American family values. Pastors and leaders today must get back to taking seriously the mandate of modeling healthy family and marriage lifestyles in a society of immoral and non-committed behavior patterns that ultimately destroy the fabric and fiber of succeeding generations. G&G: Pastor Hickman it is always a pleasure. Thank you for talking with us again for Black History Month!

Reverend Marvin E. Wiley, a native of Pine Bluff,
Arkansas, is the pastor of the Rock of Ages Baptist Church located in Maywood, Illinois. He made history at Rock of Ages Baptist Church in March 1991 becoming her second pastor in forty years. The Church has experienced spiritual, numerical, and financial growth under his dynamic leadership. Due to the phenomenal growth the Church has encountered under the leadership of Pastor Wiley, a multi-million dollar Worship Service Facility was constructed at 1309 Madison Street to the glory of God and service of mankind. His ability to teach and preach has carried him across the country for leadership, stewardship and evangelistic services. Since coming to Maywood, Pastor Wiley has continued to be concerned about evangelism both on a national, state and local level. He served on the executive committee of the corporate board of directors of the Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. He has also served on numerous civic and community boards during the course of his ministry. In March of 2010, Rev. Wiley celebrated his 19th Anniversary as the pastor of the Rock of Ages Baptist Church; as well as twenty-eight years in the Pastorate. In recognition of his contributions to the communities that he serves, he was recognized in March of 2006 by the Village of Maywood with an Honorary Street Sign. Most notably, Pastor Wiley was inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia on April 3, 2008. He is married to the former Marilyn Ross and has two children, Madilyn Ellise’ and Jarrett Ryan and one grandson, Jarret Ryan Jr.
Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., was born on September 22,
1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in the racially mixed section of Germantown.Wright took an interest in religion at an early age. His parents challenged him to balance “the intellectual with the spiritual.” In 1959, Wright graduated from Central High School, which was among the best schools in the area at the time and was 90 percent white. After high school, Wright attended Virginia Union College, a historically black school in Richmond. Wright, inspired by John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge to public service, gave up his student deferment to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He became part of the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class. After two years of service, Wright transferred to the U.S. Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. After graduating valedictorian, Wright was trained as a cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, graduating salutatorian. Following his military service, Wright earned bachelors and master’s degrees from the historically black Howard University in Washington. He earned a second master’s degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. Wright also holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological College in Dayton, Ohio, where Wright studied under the Rev. Samuel DeWitt Proctor, a mentor to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1972, he became pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. At the time, the congregation on Chicago’s impoverished South Side had only 87 adult members. It now has about 8,000, becoming the largest church in the liberal, mostly white United Church of Christ. Wright is also credited with creating 70 ministries, including prison, domestic violence, information technology and Africa ministries. He is also known for taking on edgy topics in his sermons including the income gap between whites and African-Americans and the inaccuracy of AfricanAmerican history taught in public schools. Wright also has written four books and composed songs for the Trinity Choral Ensemble, including Jesus is His Name and God Will Answer Prayer. He was one of the country’s top black preachers by Ebony magazine in 1993. Wright and his wife, Ramah Reed Wright, have four daughters and one son.

word on finance
Living your dream in life requires that you have a winning attitude. Attitude is that little thing that means everything. Many today have allowed the economic condition of our country to dictate their financial success. However, there are also many who are experiencing financial increase despite the economic climate of our day. Each day I encounter people who have either a winning or negative attitude regarding the economy. I am convinced that we have the ability to win, to live our dream, despite the economy. When we observe the scripture, it is very clear that God has no plan of financial defeat for His people in the famine. In fact, it was in these difficult seasons, He challenged them to trust His provision. God’s economic plan is so clear, He simply wants to BLESS us. You see I believe what God makes happen for one, He can make happen for another. So was it with Isaac; Abraham’s son, he took bold action despite the economic climate of his day. If you plan to live your dream, you cannot let anything, even the recession stop you. Let’s look at what we can begin to do in order to win in the financial game so we can live our dream, despite the economic challenges of our day.
1. You must walk by faith and NOT BY SIGHT. (2 Cor. 5:7) The economic pressure of our day demands our FAITH to rise to a new level financially. Today, every creditor wants their money NOW. Everywhere you turn, there are bills, financial challenges and obligations. These financial pressures have an adverse effect on your family, health, and relationships. They can overwhelm you. Faith gives us another set of eyes, which allows us to see beyond what’s before us and empowers us to reach a desired dream or vision. In a recession, faith is the key to winning because it unlocks the possibilities in our lives.
2. Refute the spirit of poverty. (Genesis 45:11)
Living The Dream
One of the dangers of an economic recession is that it forces families into a state of poverty. Many individuals lose jobs or businesses, which result in the loss of personal assets such as homes, cars, stocks, insurance, and other investments. Unfortunately, these losses have an adverse effect on families. Poverty is not just babies suffering hunger in a Third World country, but is a state of living without the necessary resources to meet basic physiological needs such as food, water, and shelter. Poverty is also a state of mind. Many people have what I call a poverty mind-set. Even though they have a job, they do not have any initiative or self-motivation, therefore once the job is gone they lack the discipline or even skill set to overcome the financial problems. In a recession, one must have mental toughness concerning their financial destiny. In Genesis 45:11, Joseph’s greatest fear for his family in the famine (recession) was that they would come to poverty. “And there I will nourish thee: for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.” Genesis 45:11 To win in a recession and live your dream, you must refute the spirit of poverty.
3. Catch the entrepreneurial spirit. (Genesis 26:12) In a recession, it is so easy to just go with the flow. Everyone is talking recession, complaining about their situation and just waiting and hoping that things will get better. This is precisely what you don’t want to do. In Genesis 26:12, it reads that Isaac sowed during the famine (recession). This is what is required to win in a recession. You must TAKE CONTROL of your own financial destiny. Experts say that our economy is in a “jobless recovery” state. This means that the economy will recover, but not the same as we have known it. Many of the millions of jobs lost will never be recovered! Corporations are not concerned about the unemployment rate. They will not be hiring as many employees as they have before. The up rise of technology and industry specialists will now perform the work. What does this mean to the average worker? It simply means that they will have to find another way of creating income. It means this is the best time for you to live your dream. Economic experts say that by 2012, 50% of the available jobs will be through Multi-Level Marketing companies. Why? Through these companies, you are not employed, but operate your own business. You must catch the entrepreneurial spirit and get in business for yourself and control your own financial destiny. I have personal friends who have started their businesses in these challenging economic times and have made more money than they have ever made. Why? They took personal responsibility for their own economy through entrepreneurialism. Today, you also can win in a recession and live your dream, if you are willing to adopt a winning attitude, exercise your faith, refuse poverty, and become an entrepreneur. These are the ingredients of a winner despite the economy climate of the day. In closing, I believe you are destined for change in your finances. Just remember these words, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done.” Michael Chitwood. SEE DR. KENNETH O. TTY USERS CALL VIA MD RELAY
A MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY Dear Friends, Four years ago, few could have foreseen the suffering so many Maryland families would endure as our national economy and global financial markets nearly collapsed. We could not have imagined how many moms and dads would lose their jobs and homes, or how many small businesses would have to close their doors. We are in a period of profound economic change. It is a change that will affect all of our lives and the lives of our children. In challenging times like these, a different level of leadership, determination, imagination, and creativity is required from each of us. The fabric of our social and political life is stretched and torn by the politics of division. To heal our painful economic and political wounds, we must connect more of Maryland to herself. Maryland is a vibrant, living system, blessed by a beautiful diversity: different cultures and forests, cities and towns, diverse religions and farmlands, historic universities and rivers, devotion and song. We must recognize the unity that already is and find ways to work together that strengthen that unity. With love, forgiveness and humility, let us move forward as One Maryland, that our works and the sacrifice of the days ahead shall be worthy of the hope God sees in the eyes of our children. Sincerely,
Martin O’Malley Governor

High Blood Pressure in African Americans: A Message for Your Health
High Blood Pressure, “the Silent Killer”, had long been known to disproportionately affect African Americans. In fact, the prevalence of high blood pressure among African Americans is among the highest in the world, at 40 percent. While high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a serious diagnosis for anyone, African Americans have a roughly two times higher risk of stroke, heart disease such as heart attack and heart failure, and an over four times higher risk of kidney failure than Caucasian Americans who also have high blood pressure. Research into the causes and treatment of hypertension in African Americans is on- going. A recent study of young black and Caucasian men (average age 23) that measured blood pressure using advanced techniques in a lab setting found higher blood pressure AND early blood vessel damage in the young black men in the study. This early elevation in blood pressure is thought to be the reason that African Americans have such a disproportionately high rate of complications associated with high blood pressure. The longer high blood pressure goes undetected and treated, the more serious the complications can be.
What Can I Do? The good news is there are things we all can do to lower our blood pressure and reduce our risk of heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. There are three things to KNOW.
KNOW Your Numbers A normal blood pressure is 120/80. Get your blood pressure checked often by your doctor. Take advantage of free health screenings offered by your church, pharmacy and community organizations. If you or someone in your family has high blood pressure, consider purchasing your own blood pressure cuff to use at home. If your blood pressure is consistently higher than 120/80, talk to your doctor or health care provider about a plan to lower it – now!
KNOW Your Medicines If your blood pressure is high and life style changes haven’t helped, ask your doctor
about medications to treat it. And don’t be surprised if you need more than one medicine. Most of the patients in our clinic need two or even three pills to get their blood pressure down to a safe range. We think of blood pressure as a number, but it actually represents many things that are happening in our bodies, from stiffened blood vessels, to a decrease in certain chemicals in our bodies. It usually takes more than one medicine to treat it. If you are on medicines, know the type and dose. We have our patients carry a list in their wallets. There are many different medicines for treating high blood pressure. Help your healthcare providers help you by knowing all your medications and your doses.
KNOW a Healthy Lifestyle We all know this advice - eat right and exercise. It’s often easier said than done. Look in your
community and church for support programs. Make a plan with a “fitness buddy” – someone who is interested in embracing a healthy lifestyle like you are – to help you stay on track. Put away the salt shaker and learn to read nutrition labels – lots of salt or “sodium” hides in processed foods. Try to eat no more than 2,200 milligrams of sodium in a day. Talk to your doctor or health care provider about your options – they will know the safest way for you to include exercise in your daily routine. And take a little quiet time each day – even five minutes – for prayer or reflection to help manage your stress.
Hope for the Future Treatment for high blood pressure is getting better all the time. There are studies in the works right now that may
help African Americans with high blood pressure by tailoring medical therapies and life style changes to suit their particular needs. Here at Maryland General Hospital, we can help you with your high blood pressure treatment plan. Call Cardiology at 410-225-8452 for more information. I
t seems like more and more people are coming up short in their relationships with others and with God. There are some who have not seen or heard from family members in years because of a dispute or wrong that has transpired between them. There are those who are not getting along with their coworkers or friends due to jealousy. There are those that are angry with God because of their circumstances. And of course there are persons who are experiencing conflict within their respective ministries and churches because it is not about them. All of this can be attributed to a breakdown in the application of practical and biblical principals for living or to make it plain, heart trouble. Our reputation as Christians is in jeopardy because of the state of our hearts. It is time to do a heart check and to determine the motives behind our actions. Getting acquainted with our true selves and being honest about the attitudes of our heart will go a long way in eradicating the impact of our actions toward one another and ultimately God. We can detect and correct heart trouble by examining ourselves with the Word of God. Searching the Bible for models of righteousness will assist us in ensuring that our hearts and the desires of our hearts are in line with God’s will. Knowing the Word of God is essential in getting our hearts back on track. A renewed mind is accomplished by reading, speaking and hearing the word of life, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is possible to be disconnected while seemingly carrying on in life like nothing has changed. Aligning with the Word will make you aware of your heart problem and also give you the remedy to fix it. The impact of the Kingdom is resting in the presentation the saints make to the world. People can tell if we are genuinely concerned about them or if we are
to your good health phony. Matthew Carla J. Debnam, 12:34 gives proof MS, LCPC of this, “For the Executive Director Christian mouth speaks Renaissance Counseling Center what the heart is full of.” What is on the inside will eventually come out. This ultimately affects our relationships with believers and unbelievers as well. Becoming more Christ-like will be the catalyst for the change of heart in others. Jesus said that people will know we are his disciples by our love. Our ability to love others is a matter of the heart. It is difficult to love others when our hearts are not in tune with the Holy Spirit. We are empowered to demonstrate God’s love through manifesting the Fruit of the Spirit. This gives evidence to those around us that our hearts are being transformed and our minds renewed through the ongoing work of the Spirit of God. People problems, personal problems and work and ministry problems can all be alleviated with the proper perspective of the heart. We are blessed when our hearts are in the right place not just emotionally but spiritually. Jesus declared that the pure in heart would see God. This is a promise that should encourage us to examine ourselves to see if there are any false ways that we need to address. Ultimately you and your heart trouble will be confronted and corrected in due season. Take time to honestly assess your motives, desires and aspirations. See if they line up with God’s will and God’s ways. Remember that, “The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” www.gracenglorymagazine.org 21 21 www.gracenglorymagazine.org

D eealing aling With . . . 1. Don’t talk negatively about your body! Negative talk breeds negative feelings. Even if you’re striving to improve your body composition, try not to verbalize negative thoughts – remember the power of positive thinking! 2. Don’t weigh yourself regularly. Our body weight fluctuates daily, and you will drive yourself crazy keeping track of day-to-day changes. Don’t set your mood or evaluate yourself according to the scale! 3. Don’t deprive your body. Eat in regular intervals, at least every 3-5 hours. Your body needs fuel continuously to function and to last longer! 4. Make sure to use the performance food pyramid guidelines as a base. Don’t cheat yourself on the key energy foods, especially grains and fruit. Eat at least 8 servings/day or 4 cups from complex carbohydrate foods such as breads, cereals and grains, and at least 4 servings or 2 cups of fresh fruits or juices.
Food, Weight and Body Image
5. Hydrate with at least 10-12 cups of non-caffeinated fluids per day, but don’t over-hydrate – excess fluid can actually dilute your body’s electrolytes. 6. Eat breakfast every day! After 10 to 12 hours without food, your body needs fuel to get the day started and rev up that metabolism. Especially sources of complex carbohydrates and dairy to start the day and help prepare you for early morning! 7. Provide the building blocks of protein daily to maintain muscle and organ mass. You need 6-9 ounces per day of protein sources like turkey, chicken, fish, and lean red meats. If you choose to eat vegetarian meals, alternative protein options include soy meat alternatives, tofu, beans, eggs, and peanut butter. 8. Take in at least a tablespoon of vegetable fat daily. Vegetable fats include olive oil or olives, nuts, salad dressings, avocado, and mayonnaise. This will actually help raise your metabolism by lubricating your digestive system as well as serve as secondary energy sources. These fats also help you absorb important antioxidant vitamins like A and E. 9. Make sure you are getting enough calcium and iron.
Herline A. Knights, RD, LD If you are not consuming at least two 1-cup servings of dairy per day, take a calcium supplement (targeting 1000 mg calcium per day). Also, if you are not a meat eater, your iron may be low, so take a multivitamin with the minimum daily dose of iron (females 15 mg/day, males and children 10mg/day). 10. Surround yourself with healthy food and optimal weight examples. Be a critical viewer of the media. Avoid or limit exposure to unhealthy images and messages, such as typical fashion magazines. If a fast food commercial makes you crave a burger and fries, grab some carrots instead! Spend less time focusing on food and weight—focus instead on your true passions in life!

How Can I Create Picture Perfect Abs For Real! Charles “Chizel It” Harris AFAA Certified Fitness Trainer
“How long will it take to flatten my tummy is the number one question in 2011?” Most people do not have a clue on how to train their abdominal and core muscles. Many wannabe sixpack seekers are misled by the hundreds of infomercials that promise to slim their waistline instantly. However, one truth from those infomercials is, it doesn’t take a lot of time to train the abdominals. Effective abs training can be completed in less than 15 minutes, about three times a week. That‘s it! The abdominal muscle responds well to programs that consist of a few simple exercises made progressively difficult. The secret to achieving a great mid section consists of three things: good nutrition, cardiovascular training and core exercises. What you eat is the key component in producing a fabulous figure. Here’s the plan. Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day, preferably four to six meals, including snacks. Also, eat to fuel your body, not your appetite. Make sure every meal is full in nutritional value, not empty calories. I generally train my abs in the morning on an empty stomach, it gives me a greater burn than when I work out on a full stomach. It is as equally important to train your lower back and oblique when doing abs training to strengthen your core. If you want to increase the fat burning process, include early morning cardiovascular exercises such as jumping rope, power walking and running. The only challenge is results come in small increments. Patience and consistency are the keys. The best way to overcome frustration is to set realistic goals! Reaching your goals will encourage you to stay on track, if you don’t feel good on the inside, no matter how much training you do, you won’t look good on the outside.

gospel industry news Happy Valentines Day Grace & Glory Fam! Show love, give love, and receive love! U deserve it! Zebullon Ellis, says, “He’s Atlanta bred, corn fed, and a country Atlanta
native.” When asked how long he’s been singing Zeb says, “He doesn’t remember not singing.” At a very early age, he started out singing in his dad’s church, Rev. Zebullon Ellis, Sr. He is currently at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, (Pastor Craig Oliver), where he’s Lead Choir Director and serves on the praise team. Sunday’s Best Second Season, Zeb says he wasn’t going to audition for it, he actually went to support his friend and ended up auditioning and made it. He says, “Sunday’s Best was a great experience and I would do it over again the same way.” He enjoyed the comradery, made some longtime friends, and learned a lot. While he did compete in the competition, his desire is never to compete in the gospel realm again, “Because what we do in the kingdom isn’t competition, preachers shouldn’t feel like praise and worship leaders are their competition, everybody has something to do in the kingdom. My gift is my gift, and we shouldn’t feel inferior to the next person, it’s about being used and it’s ok even to be showcased but never about competition in the kingdom. I’m lucky that on that season I wasn’t there to compete but to minister.” Zebullon has been traveling extensively since Sunday’s Best, he has done a revival of the hit stage play “Five guys Named Moe.” He released a Christmas single, Thanksgiving 2010, “Oh Come All Ye Faithful.” Zebullon has signed with Flow Records, which was started by Myron Williams and Juanita Bynum. After much prayer he knew this was best, giving him an opportunity to spread his wings and be the minister and artist he was called to be. While he’s a church boy, he’s a perfectionist and a major in performing arts, he’s taking time to perfect his project which is slated for the Spring of 2011. Futuristically Zebullon wants to do theater, television, and production. He will be starting his very own exclusive clothing line. Ultimately he wants to open up a Performing Arts School. Congratulations Zeb! Looking forward to hearing great things from you, I love your voice and your ministry. I appreciate you pausing in preparation of the Stellar Awards to sit down and talk to me about all that’s going on with you. Much success!

Bishop Bruce Parham
On Monday, January 17th the pastor of Oasis of Refreshing Ministries Inc., Wilmington, Delaware, Presiding Prelate of Fresh Fragrance Covenant Fellowship of Churches, Emtro Gospel Record Label artist, Bishop Parham did his live recording session at Second Pilgrim Baptist Church in Philadelphia. Bishop did a recording in 2004, with the Maestro himself, Steven Ford. Bishop says, “Steven came to me and told him about a song and demanded I listen. The title of the song was “Hide Me” and the main catchphrase in that song was “hide me, even if the enemy you hide is me” which quickly got world acclaim by listeners. That song spoke volumes to me and I will never forget it! This is his 5th solo project. Writers on this project include national recording artist Ricky Dillard, his song “Things Will Work Out” is featured on this album, as well as an influx of new writers Bishop has given opportunity to, along with some amazing musicians, Baltimore’s own Chris Forbes, John Murray (Potter’s House, Texas) and a few others. Bishop says, “This project is special to me because, this is my opportunity to have free reign, to do it as I wanted to as an artist, not necessarily what the label demands. As a pastor, I really wanted to do music that can be sang on Sunday mornings by praise and worship teams and choirs.” This album included music represented by various categories in gospel music, CCM, Praise & Worship, Contemporary, as well as Traditional. Bishop is planning to start his own label very soon. He wants to leave a legacy for his family as well as present a platform and opportunity to other artists. Look for this project to be released in the summer of 2011 thru all major record retailers. Bishop is on face book www.facebook.com/bishopbruceparham, www.oasisofrefreshing.org.

In today’s world youth are faced with challenges that seem insurmountable. Schoolwork, homework, dating, friendships, enemies, gangs, alcohol, smoking, violence, sex and the list goes on and on. WAIT!!!!!! These are the same challenges that have been going on for years. So what it the difference? Purpose. Purpose is defined by God. As teenagers your “teen” years are supposed to be ambiguous and uncertain. It’s the stage of life that you are going through. Your life is destined to become greater and the crazy experiences are teaching you to be what God has called you to be. He wants you to come to know Him in a real way and though you may be faced with peer pressure or parent pressure . . . the pressure is not going to kill you. Remember the diamond . . . its value is not realized until it has gone through years of dirt and pressure. God has a way of allowing adversity to come into our lives to prove who we really are and to make corrections before it is too late. The bible speaks about the fact that we are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. Adversity has a way of stripping us of pretense and self-delusion. All of the mistakes are purposeful. Now, can we avoid some pitfalls by listening, being obedient or just staying connected?
Of course we can . . . a bend in the road is not the end of the road . . . unless you fail to make the turn.

THE GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER SHOWN OR KNOWN
Donna Williams-Ross
Real love isn’t our love for God, but his love for us. God sent his Son to be the sacrifice by which our sins are forgiven. [1 John 4:10 - Contemporary English Version]
Love, love, love is in the air, you can see God everywhere. February is here and Valentine’s Day is being celebrated by young, old and those in between. According to statistics, Valentine’s Day accounts for the third largest floral sales. However, there is a love that is deeper and greater than any Valentine’s Day. A love that cannot be measured, with silver or gold, but displayed by the shed blood of Jesus. The most quoted scripture in my opinion is John 3:16: [For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son, so that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.] Love gives and Jesus’ life was and is a demonstration of God’s love and sacrifice for mankind. So in this “Greatest Love Story Ever Seen and Known,” God paid the ultimate price by the giving of His Son’s life that we can been redeemed – bought back to Himself. That’s LOVE! Okay, okay, here is the Love Story! When God made Adam and Eve, He had this perfect life for them to live. He was going to come down into the garden and fellowship with them. They were going to multiply, subdue and replenish the earth and all that good stuff. Even though God knew that they were going to disobey Him, His love for fellowship with mankind caused Him to go forward with the plans that He had made – man being able to subdue and rule here on earth as He did in the heavens. It was with pride that satan thought that He could rise up and exalt himself higher than the most High God. God created Lucifer – but Lucifer was going to try to rise above God. How’s that for being funny?! How does one rise higher than the person who created them? In other words, how does the dishwasher tell the manufacturer, “I don’t like the way in which you designed me so I am going to redesign myself the way I want to be viewed so I can get the glory for having redesigned myself.” Even in the disobedience of Adam and Eve, God still loved mankind and just like someone in love, He continues to seek ways to draw us back to Himself.
God lets the serpent know in Genesis 3:15 that He was going to, “Put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” God already knew what He was going to do to redeem mankind back to Himself. In order words, God was letting the serpent know that He had a plan for redemption for mankind, and His plan would prevail. Not only has God redeemed us back to Himself but He now calls us His Bride. We read of the evidence of God’s love shown in the Bible and known to us in Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” What Greater Love story could be told, than the one in which love shows itself to be patient, kind, not envious, not boastful, not proud, not rude, not self-seeking, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs, does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth, always protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres, but most of all never fails? Is that a love story or what? Is that the greatest love story ever shown and known? Who do you know that would imprint your name on the palm of their hands [Isaiah 49:16]? Who do you know that would take the time to number the hairs on your head [Matthew 10:29-31]? But most of all, who do you know that would freely, without hesitation give their child’s life as a ransom for yours? [Mark 10:35] I know no one other than God. GOD’S LOVE FOR US IS THE GREATEST LOVE STORY OF ALL TIMES. I encourage you as you take time out to celebrate Valentine’s Day that you ponder on God’s unconditional love for you. I encourage you to experience, appreciate and understand the love of God – who is madly passionately in love with you. Prayer: Father, in the Name of Jesus, I love and adore you and I thank You for first loving me and for your patience with me and your unconditional love for me, amen. www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 37 37

You Have Your Own OPINION, Don’t You? As our nation mourns the victims of the Arizona shooting that took place during a political event outside a supermarket in Tucson, AZ, organized by Rep. Gabrielle Gifford, who (at the time of this writing continues to make progress) having been shot in her head, during the event, by alleged gunman, 22 year old Jared Loughner, as he opened fire shooting 19 people, killing six, on January 8, of this year. Recently, our nation’s “Comforter in Chief” went to Arizona, with his wife, to lead that community and our nation in a memorial service held on Wednesday, January 13. Actually, I was in a church service, myself, during the time of the memorial, but a recent conversation with my father, along with my wife and my sister as we drove to Philadelphia, PA for the funeral of my youngest cousin, on my late mother’s side, the Rev. Zacharias Wilmer (age 39), prompted me to Google the speech and listen to it. My father, Dr. Harold Carter, mentioned that he’d been hearing reactions and feedback, on the radio, from citizens who professed to be republicans and/or conservatives but openly shared the general sentiment that having heard Pres. Obama’s speech that they had been moved to reconsider their opinions about and towards him. Meaning, that perhaps they’d been swayed by the hate-mongrel’s rhetoric and hadn’t given the President the benefit of listening to and evaluating him for themselves.
Dr. Harold A. Carter, Jr. Pastor New Shiloh Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD
thoughtful consideration. And, even then we must be mindful that often, as humans, we will still get it wrong. Then, we must be big enough, in spirit, to admit the same and make the necessary change(s). Decisions, opinions, judgments, etc. are powerful things. They guide out ways and determine our future. They impact those around us. Make no mistake about it, in so many ways, we are the products of others’ influences in our lives. However, we should seek to also be the product of our own learning, maturity, talents, and understandings. God has uniquely created us to think for ourselves; and, therefore to choose for ourselves. What a gift, that too often we fail to fully utilize! No wonder the prophet Hosea lamented, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (4:6a). One of Jesus’ teachings in his Sermon on the Mount is for us to do something that we all too often fail to do, until it’s too late – “consider.” Jesus instructs us to take the time to consider; don’t act hastily. He asks us to reason that if God is mindful of the somewhat mundane things, that surely we don’t need to fret, but rely on His care (ref. St. Mt. 7:28).
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (4:6a).
How often have we listened to others espouse their criticism, negativity, and pessimism regarding anything from books and movies to cultures and people, only to discover for ourselves that they, based on our own encounter, were wrong? The restaurant’s food was good. The church service was a blessing. The teacher was effective. And, the purchase (of said item) was worth the money. Too often, we have become a nation of passive thinkers. We want to know what he said of what she thinks. Or, we take the herd mentality and follow the pack rather than taking time to thoughtfully and prayerfully come to our own conclusions and decisions. Granted, there are any number of issues in life where certain loyalties and responsibilities dictate that we comply, accept, and support certain traditions and beliefs. But, even these issues, short of the family and the race, which we’re born into and can’t control, demand out own 38 38 February February 2011 2011 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory
When we take the time to consider and come to our own prayerful conclusions, perhaps then we will see the elimination of so many quick and often unfair stigmas and stereotypes that we frequently put on others. Like the persons my father spoke of, who admitted that perhaps they’d been the victims of political rhetoric, discovered that their first-hand encounter, listening to the president had given them pause to reconsider, for themselves. In the midst of our technological society where we’re bombarded with “talking heads,” expert analysis, 24 hour news, blogs, tweets, and so on, let’s be vigilant, as this new year unfolds, to think for ourselves. To make our own decisions. Don’t forget, we tell our children to avoid peer pressure, only not to heed our own advice. One of President Obama’s lines, as he encouraged Americans, was “to expand our moral imaginations, to listen… more carefully, to sharpen our instincts for empathy and remind ourselves of all the ways that our hopes and dreams are bound together.”
