ebruary is called the ‘love’ month. So many of us will go out of our way to show that certain someone our undying love with many acts and expressions of affection. After all, we must admit that our expression of love will be gaged by that other person to see if it measures up to their expectations. Those expectations will be measured by how many roses are sent, how large a box of chocolates, how exclusive the restaurant, how many carats in the diamonds, and of course the words on the Hallmark card. Many dollars will be spent trying to prove how deep their love is. On the other hand, those same criteria will be taken into account by that person who does not have someone in their life to shower them with expressions of love. There will be those who will feel unloved, unappreciated and depressed because of unfulfilled dreams of the ultimate love experience. We should not depend on or wait for another person to make us feel loved, wanted or appreciated. We should not depend on another person to validate us or make us feel whole or complete. Another person’s love does not validate you. Another person’s love does not complete you or make you whole. There is only one who can do all those things; God the lover of our souls. He is the only one who can validate you, complete you and make you whole. Did you not know that you have God’s everlasting love? God's love is unshakable and can always be relied upon. God’s love is unconditional and unbiased. God’s love is trustworthy and
faithful. Can you imagine a love so great that goes beyond your wildest dreams and expectations? I mean a love that does not require anything from you, a love that costs you nothing. Well, there is Good News! You can do more than imagine it, you can have it! In fact it’s been there all the time! Did you not know that nothing can separate you from God’s everlasting love? (Romans 8:38-39) There is nothing that you can do that will destroy God’s love for you. He loves us in spite of what we do or don’t do. God even loves us when we do not love ourselves; and even when we do not have Him in our hearts. “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.” Psalm 36:7 This month, instead of waiting for someone to prove their love for you, let’s reflect upon the greatest sacrifice of love, God’s love toward us in that it was His desire that no man perish. (John 3:16) Let’s rejoice and be thankful for God’s unmerited love. You’ll never find, no matter where you search, someone that loves you, the way God loves you, an everlasting love! “I will be glad and rejoice in your love,” Psalm 31:7a

r onte’ L. Hickman, Sr.
Southern BaptiSt ChurCh Baltimore • Harford • anne arundel G&G: Dr. Hickman, I look forward each year to our Black History Month issue and talking with you about what’s been on your agenda. Let’s start with the church. Southern Baptist Church has three locations now. Tell us about your vision of multiple locations, which is becoming more common today in a ministry. Were the additional locations strategically planned? Dr. Hickman: Our vision for multi-site ministry is tantamount to our approach and praxis of evangelism and discipleship. Southern Baptist Church is committed to a purpose-driven model of ministry that focuses our balanced efforts in the areas of evangelism, worship, discipleship, fellowship, and stewardship. It is our contention that the church is not an isolated and insulated organization but a prophetic institution designed to transform the community into the Kingdom of Christ through the Word of God. As we envisioned multi-site ministry, we identified Harford and Anne Arundel County both spiritually and strategically. We understood demographically how the Base Realignment and Closure Act would bring more than 20,000 new families to both the Aberdeen Proving Ground and Fort Meade areas and we wanted to provide another "little boat" of outreach to meet the spiritual needs of those looking for our brand of church and ministry in proximity to where they would reside. The Spirit of the Lord literally led me to the initial facility in Harford County, the Regal Bel-Air Movie

Theatre, which we outgrew in five months and relocated to the Aberdeen High School, as well as to the Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD, where we are on the grow. G&G: Dr. Hickman, of course you cannot physically be in three locations at the same time, so how does this work for you? What are the benefits of multiple worship locations, are there any disadvantages? Dr. Hickman: We introduced a worship planner into our scheme of services that enabled us to streamline our worship to be essential without being everlasting. I trained and empowered my associate ministers to take an active role in leading worship, protocol, and facilitating, freeing me up more to do the Sunday morning primary task of teaching and preaching. The additional locations are both within 30 minutes drive and 10 minutes flight time of the Baltimore location, which enables me to preach four times every weekend. Some of the benefits we have experienced in doing multi-site ministry are literally engaging and being received by a totally different community, seeing hundreds of

people come to Christ and to our church, increasing the level of volunteerism and participation of our existing membership. Experiencing the sheer momentum building in the life of our church and communities through outreach has been unspeakable. One of the challenges we face in doing multi-site ministry is having to grow our capacity and facility to meet the spiritual needs of people where they are as quickly as the congregation is growing in each location. Nevertheless, it's exciting. G&G: Dr. Hickman, the Bible tells us that without vision the people perish. You have proven yourself to be a true visionary for the Southern Baptist Church. Along with your vision of multiple worship centers for the church, you are also bringing to fruition the vision of a major community development project in East Baltimore. Please tell us about this project. Dr. Hickman: I have just completed nine years of becoming and being the Pastor of Southern Baptist Church. The vision God gave me for my leadership tenure at Southern is transforming the church and community into the Kingdom of God. I have had to learn that to manifest this incredible feat one must earn the trust of and partner with the church/churches, community, corporations, and civic leaders to get it done. In 2002, The church under the leadership of Dr. Nathaniel Higgs built a sixty unit, 12 million dollar tax credit, senior housing facility that drew another 22 million dollar investment in the American Brewery for Humanim, a non-profit social services organization. We now have site control to do another 55 unit senior housing facility which will also house needed health and human services for the community. We are also developing a state of the art early childhood/headstart facility. I have to say that it took us nine years to get to this point because God had to expand my capacity to really see what He wanted to do. I wanted one corner row house for outreach, but God wanted the entire neighborhood to be revitalized. We are now well on our way

G&G: Dr. Hickman, will this development benefit the East Baltimore corridor economically and how will it benefit the people in that community socially? Dr. Hickman: My mantra has always been to restore people as we rebuild properties. Baltimore is a jewel of a city that just needs concerned citizens to reinvest their resources in its renaissance without re-gentrification in which existing residents are relocated to suburban areas to make room for a more upscale community and middle class in the newly developed urban communities. I see a Baltimore, especially on the East Side that can be revitalized, not only in its physical structures but in it's human community and capacity to overcome drug addictions, financial distress, income inequalities, health disparities, educational barriers, and social divides through engaged and partnering faith communities. Moreover, as we redevelop the community, I have made it a binding imperative that developers and contractors alike utilize and give substantive opportunity to the people and resources in our community in the process of rebuilding it. I want my legacy to be about empowering and enriching the lives of the vulnerable and victimized people within our communities. I just believe that is what the church did for me and what we should do for others. G&G: Dr. Hickman, let’s shift to the Black History celebration at the Southern Baptist Church. Annually the Southern Baptist Church has a month long celebration and typically Black History Month is commemorated

Continued from page 9 in the schools. Why is it important for the church to celebrate Black History, honoring the efforts of people of African descent to destroy slavery and inaugurate universal freedom in the United States? Dr. Hickman: This has become one of the hallmark events of our church and city. In a world where Newt Gingrich can unapologetically call the first African American President, Barack Obama, "The Food Stamp President" and many republicans evidence no shame in their game of oppression and regression of the poor, especially African Americans, I think it's imperative that we recount and restate our greatness as a people. We must relearn the ways of unity in our community because we are being recalled to fight against injustices that threaten and thwart our existence. Therefore, I call for a major celebration each year in which we can gather and be prophetically challenged to remain sober, diligent, and ready to not merely overcome but overwhelm any opposition to our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. G&G: Dr. Hickman, once again you have a stellar lineup of speakers for this month’s Black History Month celebration. Is there a theme for this year and why were these speakers selected? Dr. Hickman: The theme continues to be "Celebrating our Heritage and Cultivating our Hope". This year we have five Wednesdays in February and we expect to have capacity crowds each week as this is about "us". All are welcome. We have several of our area high school choirs that will be providing music in the worship. We will again be providing financial support to local charter and community schools through these services as well as scholarships to our students for the fall and spring semesters. Newly added, this year we will be highlighting the African American Businesses of our city and state each week in our services to help to economically empower our community in what has been an economic depression for many African Americans. The speakers for these services as in previous years represent some of the best prophetic and afrocentric minds and talents of our nation. And I always want to expose my church and community to some of God's finest. I anticipate a great month of celebration and recommitment. G&G: Dr. Hickman, as a black man that holds multiple academic degrees, how important is knowledge of Black History to you? Are your views and perspectives as a black man living in today’s society different as a result of knowing your Black History? Dr. Hickman: As you may know I was expelled from three high

schools and had to obtain a G.E.D Nevertheless, I grew up in a home with pictures of Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. In our elementary school education at Lyndhurst and Rognel Heights, we were inundated with the lives and portraits of Carter G. Woodson, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglas, Matthew Henson, and so many others. Upon becoming a licensed minister, it was through a Saturday morning meeting with Dr. Harold A. Carter, Sr., that I learned the necessity of an education. He asked me who my role models were and upon each one that I listed, Dr. Carter responded, "You need an education.” Those portraits and lives of our historical icons and his echoing voice of intellectual responsibility propelled me with a deep sense of urgency to make of myself a valuable contribution to our society and cultural community. Above all else, African American history teaches and demands of her children, responsibility and accountability to become more, believe for greater, and bear fruit for successive generations. G&G: Dr. Hickman, Black History recognition is paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society. Today in America, racism and discrimination are put aside by most people, but we know it still exists. How would you describe the current state of equality in America? Lastly, is there still work to be done? Dr. Hickman: The current state of equality in America still suffers from innate myths and superiority/inferiority complexes engrafted in people through generational ideologies and pathologies. The economic disinvestment in impoverished "ghetto's" and substandard school facilities for inner city children continue to exacerbate a very solvable problem. The most vulnerable and challenged in our society are becoming more and more discounted and thought of as write-offs. It is my contention that the more capable and wealthy our society becomes the more we must be intentional about the lease, the lost, and the left out. We cannot give up on anyone, least of all our children. The inequality in our nation continues to cut its nose despite its face. Those of us who know better must not only protest the oppressors to our sustainable growth, but we must turn our attention and resources inward to engage our communities and transform our urban plantations to become fortresses of imagination, creativity, and productivity toward a new civilization. I'm going to stay engaged in the process of "seeing it through". G&G: Dr. Hickman as always your answers challenge us and motivate us. We look forward to joining in with the Southern Baptist Church as we all celebrate Black History Month.

There are some things we take for granted. One of them is the ability to read. I am sure you remember the very first time you read a sentence aloud. It more than likely brought excitement to you and to those who witnessed your accomplishment. It probably motivated you and helped to open your mind to the larger world around you. Perhaps, one book led to another and another. Educators will be among the first to tell you that reading is basic and fundamental to every aspect of learning. As we celebrate AfricanAmerican (Black) History month we must not overlook the importance of reading. Frederick Douglass, who was born a slave in 1818 in Maryland, embraced the importance of reading. Douglass was exposed to reading as a slave. At one point in his life, he met a man named Wilson at a local church. A short time later they started their own Sunday school for blacks. Douglass would later become a world-renowned journalist, newspaper publisher and a major voice for freedom. It was a voice he developed from his learning to read and write. History will show that reading was instrumental in helping to
open doors of opportunity to an enslaved people. During those early and painful years of African-American history, books were banned for people of color. There was a belief that permitting AfricanAmericans to read would help them see and understand their current condition. In the Deep South laws were passed forbidding slaves to learn to read or write and making it a crime for others to teach them. Today, there are no longer such restrictions to reading and yet so few people seem to exercise this right. A recent Harris poll reveals that overall just 16% of Americans read between 11 and 20 books a year with one in five reading 21 or more books in a year. In fact, the poll shows that adults who own e-readers (Kindle, Nook, or Ipad) read more. The Harris poll also reveals that regardless of how few people are reading that those who exercise this right are drawn to certain types of books. Among those who say they read at least one book in an average year, threequarters say they read both fiction (76%) and non-fiction (76%). I read a variety of books, many of them connected with my ministry as a pastor and my job as a television journalist. However, I have my favorite. I want to recommend a book filled with truth and freedom. It is the Holy Bible. It remains one of the best-selling books. It’s the same book the Apostle Paul recommended to Timothy, his son in the ministry, and the people he was assigned to lead. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16) Today, make a commitment to read and to read often. Remember, it’s a right. Dr. Tim Tooten, Sr. is the Pastor and Founder of Harvest Christian Ministries and the Senior Education Reporter for WBAL-TV (NBC) In Baltimore.

Book Shelf Expect a Miracle Oral Roberts Do you want to read a story about a faith journey; not a faith walk but a faith journey? Do you want to know what it’s like to go from one level of the call of God to the next level? Do you want to read a triumphant story of a man who overcame adversities and challenges that should have kept him down but who ended up being one of the greatest Giants in the Faith? Expect a Miracle by Oral Roberts is the book that will address all of that as well as take your faith to the next level. Expect a Miracle is an autobiography about the life and ministry of Oral Roberts. It’s a story about a stuttering little preacher’s kid born to carry out his parents’ faith, expectancy and belief in miracles. Oral Roberts attributes his success in life to his ability to hear God when He speaks and to obey. His commitment and dedication to obeying the voice of God put strains on his relationships both personal and professional. Expect a Miracle shows how friendships and relationships can be tested and tried, but the ones that are meant to survive will do just that; survive. One of the most memorable chapters in the book is “Make No Little Plans Here”. Oral Roberts discusses how he navigated successfully from being the groundbreaking, monumental healing evangelist, laying hands and praying for over 1.5 million sick people, to becoming the founder and president of the leading charismatic University of the 20th Century. He shares how during this process he had never felt more alone as he had to face to face with the reality of his board of directors threatening to leave. You have to read the rest of the chapter to find out what exactly happens. Let’s just say everyone knew where everyone stood with each other when this fateful meeting was over. In 1963 Oral Roberts opened the doors to Oral Roberts University. The Lord spoke to Oral the words that every student commits
by Brandie Manigault
to memory and heart: “Raise up your students to hear My voice, to go where My light is dim, where My voice is heard small, and My healing power is not known, even to the uttermost bounds of the earth. Their work will exceed yours, and in this I am well pleased.” Expect a Miracle will, if you allow it, cause you to explore every area of your life. You will examine your relationship with your friends. Can they go to the next level with you as you change or are they just for this season? You will look at your relationship with God; will you obey when it’s not comfortable? If you have children, are you praying for them, are you leaving a legacy for them to carry on? This book will encourage every parent who has a child who seemingly is not living the life you raised them to live. The seeds planted
in their lives, the messages they have heard, the prayers that they have had prayed over them will ring in their ears until they have no choice but to look to Jesus. Mothers who are praying for their children will find comfort in knowing that their prayers don’t go unheard by God. This is noted as Oral Roberts talks about his spunky mother, Mrs. Priscilla Roberts, who never stopped praying for him. As a graduate of Oral Roberts University, I was amazed as I read this book to see the story behind the man who was once my Chancellor. To read the journey he went on in order to impact my life as a student, and to know that my “works will exceed his” because of his obedience made me realize in a greater way that someone’s destiny is directly linked to my obedience to the voice of God today. I HIGHLY recommend Expect a Miracle to everyone. It’s not a book for one particular audience. It goes beyond denominations, race, age, sex, and any cultural barrier to speak to everyone on every level. Go get it.

nutrition & you
By Herline A. Knights, RD, LD
My doctor told me to change my diet to help prevent me from having heart problems. Why? Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Improving your diet and lifestyle can help prevent heart disease, according to the American Heart Association. Whether you already have heart disease or are at risk for heart disease, you can benefit from a healthy diet and regular exercise. What can I do to reduce my risk for heart disease? • Consume an overall healthy diet. • Aim for a healthy body weight. • Aim for recommended levels of lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides. • Aim for a normal blood pressure. • Aim for a normal blood sugar level. • Be physically active. • Avoid use of and exposure to tobacco products. That sounds daunting. How can I meet all of those goals? The AHA’s Diet and Lifestyle recommendations for heart disease can
help you achieve most of their goals for risk reduction. Modifying your diet and lifestyle can improve your body weight, blood lipid levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. These recommendations include: • Balance calorie intake with physical activity to achieve or maintain a healthy body weight. • Consume a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. • Choose whole-grain, high-fiber foods. • Consume fish, especially oily fish, at least twice a week. • Limit your intake of saturated fat to 7% of energy, trans fat to 1% of energy, and cholesterol to 300 mg per day by: Choosing lean meats and vegetable alternatives. Selecting fat-free (skim), 1% fat and lowfat dairy products; and minimizing intake of partially hydrogenated fats. • Minimize your intake of beverages and foods with added sugars. • Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt. • If you consume alcohol, do so in moderation. I need some practical tips to help me follow this advice. Can you help? The tips below can help you reduce the calories fats, sugars, and salt in your diet. Reduce salt by: • Limiting processed meats like bacon, sausage, and hot dogs. • Using fewer frozen and boxed dinners. • Choosing reduced-salt versions of canned vegetables and processed foods. • Rinsing canned vegetables and beans before cooking.
• Limiting use of salty condiments like ketchup and soy sauce. Reduce calories by: • Preparing and eating smaller portions of everything. • Knowing the calorie content of the foods and beverages you consume. • Replacing high-calorie foods with fruits and vegetables. Reduce total fat- trans fats and saturated fat by: • Using liquid vegetable oils in place of solid fats like butter, margarine, and shortening. • Using fewer full-fat dairy products. Select low-fat or skim dairy foods. • Removing visible fat from meat and poultry. • Using fewer commercial pastries, cookies, cakes, pies, and doughnuts. • Limit processed meats like bacon, sausage, and hot dogs. Reduce sugars by: • Limit beverages high in sugar including regular sodas, fruit punches, and sweetened tea and coffee drinks. • Use less jelly, honey, and candy. • Eat less cake, cookies, pies, and doughnuts. Be more physically active by: • Decreasing time spent watching TV, sitting at computer and video games, etc. • Incorporating movement into everyday activities, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. • Adding exercise to your week gradually, starting with a few minutes a day or two at a time, building up to 30 minutes most days of the week..

Jonathan Nelson Baltimore’s own Jonathan Nelson has made a major transition in his musical career. He’s the newest signee to Karew Records owned and created by Karen Clark Sheard. The label houses Karen Clark Sheard, The Clark Sisters, Kierra Sheard and now Jonathan Nelson, who is the first to sign with the label outside of the Clark family. I had an opportunity to speak with Jonathan about his move and he said, “I’m extremely thrilled to be connected to such a quality indie label. The musical union is going to blaze the train in gospel music for years to come, and everyone should look forward to the great music in 2012!”
This month we celebrate the life and legacy of one of Baltimore’s leading ladies, Deidre Showell who transitioned from labor to reward last year on February 13, 2011. She was a jewel to the body of Christ and a joy to everyone who knew her. Concert promoter, Interior decorator, fashion consultant, wedding planner, intercessor, prayer warrior, are some of the attributes of Dee Dee Showell. The Showell Family along with a team of great leaders has planned two days of commemorative events. On February 17, 2012 at 7:30 pm there will be a Black & White Ball and Silent Auction, at the Cranbrook Mansion in Cockeysville, MD, featuring Vicky Winans as host along with other musical guests. On February 19
at the First Apostolic Faith Church, 27 S. Caroline St, Baltimore MD, there will be an Awards Ceremony & Concert hosted by Jonathan & Jason Nelson, Special Musical Guest Kurt Carr, as well as musical performances by some of the nominees. If you have not had the opportunity to vote for your favorite praise team, church band, community choir, best female & male vocalist, and church choir, go to the website www.deedeeshowell.com and cast your vote. Voting has been extended until February 5th. You may also obtain more information and purchase tickets for the Black & White Ball from the website. INFUSE - Tim Manigault
Tim Manigault was a praise & worship leader in New York and Oklahoma for many years. He received a call from Pastor Benny Hinn asking if he would consider a position in his ministry as Worship Pastor at his church in Southern California and after 5 weeks of interviews he was hired. Tim served Pastor Hinn full time for 4 years. Tim was educated at Oral Roberts University and able to apply a lot of what he learned at ORU, working in ministry for Pastor Hinn. Tim still works for Pastor Hinn contractually, while consulting three ministries in California, he’s often guest worship leader at Life House Worship Center, and he’s in the process of establishing his own ministry along with his wife Brandie called Healing Voice in Temecula, CA. When I asked Tim what happened to cause him to seek God for this move and how it came to be, he said, “I was standing in a difficult season, I got away to pray in a monastery in Phoenix, AZ, and I spent time with the Lord, and I asked Him what He wanted me to do and He said one word ‘INFUSE’.” I asked Tim to define what INFUSE is and he said, “Infuse is a unique destiny ministry experience designed to unlock destiny in the believer, while the believer ministers to the only one who can unlock their treasure. INFUSE will travel to various cities and do 2 Day Activations that consists of intense worship, prophetic ministry, teachings of practical applications from God.” I’m excited about INFUSE and can’t wait until Tim brings it the East Coast! If you want to reach out to Tim, as well as find out more about INFUSE the website is www.myinfuse.tv, follow him on twitter www.twitter.com @iluvworship, on Facebook www.facebook.com/ iluvworship and myinfuse. e are living in a time when many are considered the walking wounded. These wounds are not seen by the eye but are felt in the minds and hearts of people impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and verbal, emotional, mental, and financial abuse. More attention and awareness of these struggles have surfaced in part because of the reports of veterans returning from war, victims of child abuse and domestic violence and survivors of accidents and tragedies. This unspoken suffering goes unnoticed by the naked eye but those from every walk of life have been impacted. Congresswoman Gabrielle
Giffords is an example of someone fighting back to be healthy and whole despite the difficulty experiencing the trauma. People are living with these internal injuries and physical reminders and find it tough to express their pain. Many times the pain manifests in relationship problems, emotional instability and isolation. While these may be a few of the challenges invisible wounds present, there is hope when those impacted lean on their faith and the support of others to manage life’s brokenness. God is near to the brokenhearted no matter what the source of the wounds. Persons directly and indirectly impacted by this unseen trauma can help themselves and others by reaching

out, speaking out and holding out. One woman affected by her husband’s PTSD has started a blog, theinvisiblewounded.blogspot.com which chronicles the joys and pains of the healing process of a military family and offers others strength for their journey. Some have begun support groups for victims of violence and abuse. While others have begun to speak out, like the victims of child sexual abuse, and break the silence that continues to keep those who suffer in bondage. Joyce Meyer has a DVD, One Life, chronicling the pain of her past and its impact on her life. She is living proof that it is possible to survive and thrive in spite of the trauma. The church can impact those with these issues by supporting them in prayer and partnering with organizations that work to eradicate the pain. The church can also be a place where persons are educated about these invisible wounds and give them courage to face those issues. We can continue providing an emotional and spiritual foundation through exhibiting love in action. We are called to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. There is help and hope for persons impacted by invisible wounds from the Lord, who is our refuge and strength. We must never dismiss the magnitude of suffering that our neighbor, loved one, friend or coworker has experienced. Some wounds run deep and can challenge a person’s will to survive. Isaiah 61 reminds us that God is able to give “comfort to those who mourn and give joyous praise in place of broken hearts and to those that were terribly insulted and horribly mistreated now they will be greatly blessed.” (CEV) He will give us double for our trouble especially when we seek refuge and renewal in him. There is healing for all of those wounded by life. Whether our wounds are obvious to others and ourselves or invisible, the need for healing is the same. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 27

body basics
As
if we don’t struggle to get through a busy week. The US government recommends 60 to 90 minutes of daily moderate-intensity exercise at least five days a week. That may not be a problem if you are fanatical about fitness. But most of us have careers, kids, and a long to-do list most of the time. So is it really necessary to spend long hours at the gym? Not according to most fitness professionals that I have had the pleasure of talking to. We all agree that around 20 minutes of highintensity exercise three to four times a week is more than enough to obtain a marvelous physique. Although the gym is a good place to socialize and make new friends, most people spend way too much time talking instead of pumping iron! If you can stay focused for an intense cardiovascular workout for 20 minutes, you will burn no less than 200 calories. That does not include the calories you burn hours after your workout!
There are many ways you can increase the intensity level of your current routine and reduce your workout time. Here are a few exercises I recommend. Mountain Climbing: Start in a pushup position. Keeping your hands on the ground throughout, jump one leg forward into a deep lunge. Without pausing, jump the other leg forward as the first leg returns to the starting position. It’s almost like running horizontally up some stairs. This exercise will target your chest, arms, glutes, hamstrings, abdominals and quads. Wood Chop: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a medicine ball or light hand weight above your head with both hands. As you drop down into a squat, swing the ball or hand-weight down between your legs to mimic the motion of chopping wood. Swing it overhead again as you rise back to the starting position. This is a good total body exercise and warm-up. Overhead Side Press: Stand with your legs slightly
apart, holding your abs tight. Hold a pair of dumbbells at shoulder height with your palms facing away from you. Simultaneously, press the weights up while lifting one leg at a time, almost like marching in place. This is great for shoulders and abdominals. Applying three 20 minute weekly workouts, can maximize your time and help you maintain. As soon as your schedule allows, I recommend you increase your workout in 10 minute increments or add another 20 minute workout to your week. YOU CAN DO IT! Ditch Y It’s a new year, so clean out those closets and toss the dated or unflattering fashion trends that didn’t work (we’re looking at you, harem pants). With a clean fashion slate, you can incorporate 2012’s most daring (but wearable) items to amp up your look. Melissa Liebling-Goldberg of luxury fashion website Gilt Groupe, and fashion expert Lilliana Vazquez (seen on Bravo and The Style Network) of TypeF.com share the hottest new trends.
BOLD COLOR Liebling-Goldberg says 2012 is the time to break out the color. “Put away your little black dress this spring, and keep it tucked away,” says Liebling-Goldberg. Neon colors, as well as deep jewel tones, will be popular. If these bold hues are too daring, incorporate flattering pastels like aqua, sea-foam green and light lemon. Vazquez suggests incorporating bold colors on areas of the body you’d like to highlight. Got a great butt? Show it off with a neon skirt or pant. DARING PATTERNS “This is not the year to be a wallflower -- get ready to command attention in photo prints, bold florals, neon shades and saturated pastels,” says Liebling-Goldberg. On-trend patterns easily update your wardrobe, and tribal-inspired or exploded floral patterns are ideal for bold girls. If you’re hesitant to incorporate a pattern, start small by mixing a classically-shaped patterned top with neutral pants.

RETURN OF COLOR BLOCKING It’s back with a vengeance as this trend will be huge in 2012. Want to start small? Incorporate the look into your shoes and accessories. “A color blocked bag or ankle strap heel is an easy way to add a current trend to your work look,” says Liebling-Goldberg. She also suggests pairing bright colors with nude for a chic, wearable outfit. Not sure which colors coordinate? Vazquez has a simple trick. “You can try wearing complementary colors (colors directly across from each other on the wheel) like blue and orange, or analogous colors (any three colors next to each other on the wheel) like yellow, yellow-green, and green. Boom, you’re done,” says Vazquez. TEXTURES Of course, what better way to liven up an outfit than by incorporating texture? According to Liebling-Goldberg, fringe was prominent on the runway and is great for a fun, flapper-inspired evening look. Mesh was also seen in fashion shows like Rag & Bone and Alexander Wang (to name-drop a few), and is a versatile trend with pieces ranging from sporty to romantic.

h Your Old Duds! 8 Secrets of Highly Successful Sale Shoppers 1. Off-Season Reaps Best Deals The best shoppers know to scour sale racks for short sleeves in November, wool sweaters in April, bathing suits in September. What you give up in selection, you make up for in spectacular savings (75-90% off isn’t uncommon). Occasionally, you can save by also buying ahead of a season (Nordstrom’s runs sales well before each season starts.) 2. Learn Sale Lingo An experienced shopper can distinguish a promotion from a clearance, a two-for-one from a buy-one-get-one-half-off. She knows that sometimes something as simple as free shipping may add up to big savings, while 50% off on something she doesn’t need is a waste of money. 3. Make Friends With Sales Staff A great salesperson is a serious shopper’s best friend. Not only will sales people tell you about upcoming sales, some — especially at boutiques — may even hold merchandise a day or two to give you time to take advantage of the sale. 4. End-of-Season Gives Best Selection You’ll save big — 40% and up is common — and get to shop from choice pieces if you shop immediately after the season. The day after Christmas is famous for yielding great sales on decorations, but did you know that retailers slash prices on clothing for that day, too? Don’t wait too long, though, because many stores are carrying leaner inventories so if you wait until mid-January to shop for winter clothing — thinking the stores will be packed with bargains — you will most likely miss the sales and the store will be stocked with summer merchandise. 5. Invest in Classics The most fashiony items will always be enticing when they are on sale, but remember that even the cutest trends have a short life cycle. If you want to get more than a few months’ wear out of your purchase, stick with the classics. End-of-season sales yield great buys on pieces you’ll wear for years, from cashmere sweaters to wool blazers to leather pumps.
6. Don’t be Tempted by Odds and Ends An embroidered skirt in teal from a big ticket designer at 70% off. Sounds impressive, but successful sale shoppers know that picking around in the odds and ends can be a disaster. If you don’t have something in your closet to go with the item or if you really don’t need it (or worse, if you don’t love it and are just buying the brand) it’s a waste of money. 7. Beware Coupons and Buy-One-Get-One-Half-Price Retailers often put stipulations on coupons, such as requiring you to buy a cer tain amount before they take a discount (e.g. $10 off $50 or more). It sounds like a deal, but that example only amounts to a measly 20% discount. Select shoppers know they only save about 25% when they buy-one-get-one-half-price (ex: you pay $50 for one item, $25 for the next: Total of $75 on what would have been $100 purchase, thereby only saving 25%). Internet coupons — which you can easily find by Googling the retailer you want to buy from — can, however, save you big on items that you really want to buy. 8. Look for Flash Sales Fashion flash sales are limited-time and limited-quantity sales. One of the most popular designer flash sales sites is Gilt.com. What you give up in selection and sizes, you gain by getting mostly in-season (or pre-season) goods of the highest quality at enormous discounts. Source: www.sheknows.com www.About.com

Do You Know Your Own Strength?
Cassandra Vaughn-Fox
Out Foxed Media, www.outfoxedmedia.org
The other day I went and acquired Whitney Houston’s new CD. Honestly I have never been a huge fan of Whitney's but this time I was anxious to see how she was going to pull off a seven-year comeback. As I intently listened to her CD, the message in each song made me listen even more. Check these words out, "I didn’t know my own strength and I crashed down, and I tumbled. But I did not crumble, I got through all the pain. I didn’t know my own strength. Survived my darkest hour. My faith kept me alive. I picked myself back up, held my head up high. I was not built to break I didn’t know my own strength.” The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. (Psalm 18:1) In listening to this I realized that Ms. Whitney in the first few lines told everyone where their strength lies, "My faith kept me alive.” How many times in life are we faced with obstacles that have you doubt that you would not make it through and out of no where God comes through and clears a pathway? You see I think so often that we
forget that God is in control, and He is the creator and controller of the universe. So many times we are faced with situations and we doubt whether or not we can make it through. What we forget is that God is always in control. Sometimes I think that we forget that, "That all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 I know that I have been in situations that right after I've stumbled, and at the second that I am that close to touching the Earth and crashing face first, God stretches His hand of mercy out and as Maxwell Smart would say, “I missed it by that much.” We have to learn as Christians to allow the Spirit to control our lives so that we can experience true spiritual freedom. We need to stop trying to run our lives and allow God to be the Pilot and Co-Pilot. In order for us to realize our own strength sometime God takes us through life’s experiences so that we can be marveled by the wonders of His works. As you enter in this season of Love, I challenge you to allow God to be your Pilot. I challenge you to never doubt your strengths and keep your faith because that will surely keep you alive. Until next time . . . Stay Focused, Stay Strong, Experience Life at its fullest but most of all, Stay in Love with God.

teen connect Discipline is oftentimes seen as a “hard” thing. We all admit to hating discipline. However, it is training that corrects, molds, perfects or produces moral or mental improvement. Disciplining is really supposed to be a labor of love – God’s original “Don’t shrug off God’s discipline, but don’t be crushed by it either. It’s the child he loves that he

disciplines; the child he embraces, he also corrects. God is educating you; that’s why you must never drop out. He’s treating you as dear children . . . At the time, discipline isn’t much fun. It always feels like it’s going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it’s the welltrained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God.” - Hebrews 12:5-11
Discipline from your parents is necessary and it should let you know how much you are loved. Discipline may come in different forms, some quiet urges and others strong suggestions. Either way it separates you from trouble. The key is to understand that it takes discipline to keep you focused. Ask any athlete, musician, singer, dancer, doctor, comedian, chef . . . we could go on and on but hopefully you get the point. In what ways do you sense God disciplining you? Maybe He’s calling you to spend time with Him each day. Or perhaps He wants you to break a habit instead of starting one. Are you willing?
It is amazing that He loves us so much that He continues to discipline us. Think about it. Jesus went to the cross, suffered a terrible death and came back to save you! There is no way, with all that He suffered for you, that He is not going to do everything He can to make you into the best that you can be. The same goes for our parents who may not have purchased their dream car or vacation home (yet) because they wanted you to go to a good school. They are not going to give up on you by not disciplining you. Those that the Lord loves He disciplines (chastens). You’ve heard the old saying, “This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you.” That is because discipline works for our good. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 35 35 www.gracenglorymagazine.org

word on finance
Financial Deliverance
Coming Out To Stay Out Our God is a Deliver. He takes no pleasure in His children being in bondage of any kind. God created man to live in freedom so he may fulfill his God-ordained purpose on the earth. Financial debt is a form of spiritual, emotional, financial, and even marital bondage. When debt grips your finances, it squeezes or chokes the very life out of living. You need finances to enjoy your life—that is why your bills are called living expenses. A lack of money will limit your choices in life. That is the essence of financial freedom, to afford you the choices and privileges you deserve as a child of God. To accept financial debt and lack as a way of life is not God’s will for the believer. When you’re in debt, you are robbing yourself and your family of having the best God has to offer. The scripture says, “…who gives us richly all things to enjoy.” (I Timothy 6:17) If God wants us to enjoy what He has provided for us, He knows that is not possible when we are in financial bondage. When your family is in financial debt, the money that is supposed to bless you is already obligated to creditors. So, therefore, you are robbed of the pleasure of receiving because what could have been used to bless you or someone else is gone. I am writing this article to tell someone that God is a financial deliver. The same God, who delivers us from sin, iniquity, addictions, habits, and people, can and will deliver you financially. Several years ago, when I was drowning in personal, family, and ministry debt and was facing bankruptcy, I called on God for financial deliverance—and He heard me. Before David was King of Israel, he was not wealthy. In fact, he was a fugitive on the run and struggling to survive from day to day. This was a very difficult time for David financially, not only for him but also for the men in his army. The scripture says that everyone that came to David was in distress, in debt, and in discontentment. You see, when you are in debt, you need to know first to whom to turn. Even though David was in the cave with them, they all knew that they were COMING OUT TO STAY if they followed David to the throne of Israel. Kings are not poor, and you need to know that according to Revelation 1:6, you and I have been made Kings and Priests unto God. The scripture says, “. . . He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the beggar from the ash heap, to set them among princes and make them inherit the throne of glory.” (I Samuel 2:8) Sometimes, we will go through some temporary discomfort financially to position us for permanent comfort financially. When these men came to David, they were positioning themselves to be delivered financially. David is a picture-type of CHRIST, THE ANOINTED ONE. Christ the Lord is actually called in scripture the Son of David. In essence, they were coming to their Deliver for help. Their association with David was going to change their debt condition forever. They were coming out to stay out. These men eventually became mighty men and millionaires and were the biggest money givers in the Kingdom of Israel when David was preparing the Temple of God to be built by Solomon (I Chronicles 29:6-9). These men saw God take
their lives from debt, distress, and discontentment to financial and economic stability and abundance. You see I am a witness that God delivers you financially and that you can come out to stay. When he delivered my family and me of financial debt and stress, we have never been back. I believe this testimony is only true because God delivered us financially. Remember it was David who said, “This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.” (Psalm 34:6) There are many troubles associated with financial lack and debt: bad health, stress, heart failure, divorce, foreclosures, broken relationships, business failures, lack of church growth, etc. But, as David said, “God can deliver us from them all.” Here are some pointers to learn from this story that will position you for financial deliverance: 1) Cry out to God for finances like you do for anything else you need. But, remember to listen and follow His instructions. 2) God delivers through association: Find someone who is anointed financially and connect with the anointing. 3) Learn to submit to authority: There are authorities that God will place in your life to discipline and instruct you for your next level financially. Hint: They may not be your preacher. These people cannot be broke themselves, but will have a proven track record of financial success. 4) Be willing to fight for your financial freedom: David and his men fought many battles to obtain the spoils they needed to establish themselves as Kings and Leaders over Israel. One of the criteria of a King was that he had to have wealth. Don’t be afraid to fight for your financial success. Every week, you are reading about how someone went from rags to riches, from homelessness to wealth and prominence, business failures to business successes. If God can deliver them, why can't He deliver you? Say right now while you’re reading this, “It is my time for financial deliverance.” Say it again a little louder, “It is my time for financial deliverance.” Now, say it because God hears you and is ready to deliver those who cry out to Him for help. Come on, “It’s my time for financial deliverance, and this time I’m coming out to stay out.”

word of encouragement
Love is the Message that I Bring You.
“God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.” [John 3:16 Contemporary English Version] “The greatest way to show love for friends is to die for them.” [John 15:13 - Contemporary English Version] As the world celebrates Valentine’s Day this month I encourage you to meditate on a greater love – the love of God, which is greater than any Valentine’s Day. The love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ transcends anything we have done in the past, doing presently or will do in the future. What manner of love is that? It was His love that caused Jesus, when He was leaving to return to His Father, to give the Twelve Apostles specific instructions. Those same instructions are available to us today. Jesus gave us the authority to trample on snakes
and scorpions and the authority to overcome all the power of the enemy. In actuality, Jesus gave us the right to be His power of attorney in this earth realm. Power of attorney means a legal instrument authorizing one to act as the attorney or the agent of the grantor. We can act as God’s agent in the natural and the supernatural world. We have been given the power to effect change in this earth realm. Below is a description of your rights as Power of Attorney.
POWER OF ATTORNEY Of BELIEVERS ARTICLE I Jesus appoints His believers to be His true and lawful attorney-in-fact with full power to carry out those acts specified herein in accordance with any limitations imposed herein. This power of attorney took effect upon the execution of His death, burial and resurrection and His ascension in heaven and shall remain in effect until His return. In the event that satan and his cohorts attempt to bring an action against any member of the Body of Christ, such action should be dismissed by Believers, because no weapon formed against any Believer shall not prosper. Jesus nominated Believers as attorney-in-fact to serve as guardians of His Word and to speak it in season and out of season. ARTICLE II Your attorney-in-fact is in effect with full compensation, including fringe benefits.
ARTICLE III All power is granted to His AttorneyIn-Fact/Believers to be used for His glory, His benefit and on His behalf in accordance with the directions specified in His word. All power is granted to His AttorneyIn-Fact/Believers to lay hands on the sick and watch them recover. All power is granted to His AttorneyIn-Fact/Believers to tread on serpents and scorpions and nothing shall in anywise harm them. His attorney-in-fact is authorized to take legal action against any person or institution that refuses to honor this power of attorney. I HEREBY sign my name to this Power of Attorney over 2000 years ago. Jesus. I encourage you to recognize how powerful the love of God is. Because of that love you are entitled to operate as power of attorney and you are no longer a victim, but you are victorious. I encourage you to remember that you are more than a conqueror in and through Christ Jesus. You are an overcomer. You are the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath. Prayer: Father, enable me to recognize the power of attorney status that was given me because of Your love for me. Teach me to walk in the fullness of the power that you have given me in Jesus’ Name I pray, amen. © Donna Williams-Ross In Trust Ministries dwilliamsross@aol.com

Carter’s Commentary
carter commentary
Dr. Harold A.Carter, Jr. Pastor, New Shiloh Baptist Church Baltimore, MD
“VADA A BORDO GAZZO!” Second to the ongoing Republican presidential campaign, the biggest news story, to-date, of 2012 has to be (at the time of this writing) the almost Titantic-like disaster of the 17-story cruise ship Costa Concordia. Having left a port near Rome, Italy (January 13, 2012) the captain, Francesco Schettino reportedly told an investigating judge that he decided to sail close to Giglio to salute a former captain who had a home there. The captain went on to state that he sailed too close to the rocks, turned too late, and ended up in shallow water. In the ensuing panic, 4,200 passengers (3,200 guests and 1,000 crew members) began fending for their lives as a 160-foot gash tore into the hull of the ship. Electricity went out, the ship tilted to approximately 70 degrees, and having run aground, the abandon ship order was given. Fortunately, although 11 persons are known to have died and 21 are still unaccounted for (again, I emphasize, at the time of this writing) almost all others were rescued using lifeboats, although a few swam to shore. The saga becomes much more involved as a result of the captain’s curious, and some would say inexcusable, actions. He abandoned his ship—a crime in Italy and in most countries, worldwide—without seeing to the evacuation of all other persons, on board. It has been reported that even some of his crew began the process of evacuating the ship, in a kind of mutiny, due to his inaction. When he did finally act, he rescued himself by getting into a lifeboat, later stating that he did so in order to assess damage. By that time the Italian coast guard was able to establish radio contact with him. According to transcripts of radio and telephone conversations released Tuesday, January 17, the following order was given by the commander, who has become a hero for his stern and forthright communication with the captain: “You go on board,” said Commander DiFalco, of the coast guard. “You don’t need to carry out any assessment. You declared ‘ship abandoned.’ Now, I am in charge. You get back on that (bleeping) ship. Is that clear?” WBAL radio reported that same morning that t-shirts were already being printed and sold in that area with the words, “Vada A Bordo Gazzo!” (“Get back on board, for (bleeping) sake!”), which is what caught my attention to write about this tragedy. The transcripts further indicate that Captain Schnettino claimed he would return to the ship to organize emergency operations. Instead, he walked from the rocks of the port of Giglio, where he hailed a taxi and fled the scene. He was subsequently caught and arrested. He is currently facing multiple charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship. In his own defense, having been dubbed “the most hated man in Italy,” his latest explanation is that he did not abandon ship but accidently “fell into a
lifeboat” while helping passengers…. The scriptures have much to say about responsibility, loyalty, duty, and commitment. To be sure, it’s what the human-God relationship is about. We are called to be faithful to God, to stay with Him, and to remain on board until…. Until what or when? Until the waters have receded, as in Noah and the Ark (Genesis 8:13), until we’ve reached the “other side,” as in Jesus and His disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee (St. Mark 4:35-5:1), and to hold on and not look back, as in a farmer whose hands must remain on the plough (St. Luke 9:62). This faithfulness (responsibility, etc.) is to be who we are. Unfortunately, we tend to be more and more a part of an age where dereliction of duty is more commonplace. Who can forget the flight attendant, in 2010, who opened an emergency door, popped the slide, grabbed two beers, slid down the chute, ran across the tarmac to the parking lot, got into his car and drove home to Queens, NY, after a JetBlue passenger allegedly refused to apologize to him for striking him with luggage? More recently, just this month, police discovered a menagerie of 40 dead animals in the home of a Columbia, MD pet rescue worker, after neighbors complained about a foul odor. Among the animals found dead were birds, cats, rabbits, snakes, a hermit crab, and guinea pigs. The owner of the residence hasn’t been seen for over a week, but when found she is expected to face child cruelty charges, according to ABC news. Almost daily, we read or hear about a child being abandoned, a family being abandoned by their provider, professionals (teachers, police officers, business persons, military personnel going AWOL, quitting and/or defecting). And, of course, there seems to be no end to the rise of the divorce rate (esp. in our country) when the traditional marriage is being attacked or seen as a Hollywood news-maker, i.e. the 72 day marriage of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. Hard work, sacrifice, compromise, endurance, and do I dare add chivalry and gallantry, have gradually moved towards extinction, just like knights in shining armor. As we enter African-American
History Month, so much of our story is replete with individuals giving up their personal pursuits for the common good. Indeed, we are the recipients of their selflessness and sacrifices. The question, then, for us is, since we are the recipients of their sacrifices, are we investing the resulting blessings in those who will succeed us as our act of sacrifice? Moreover, what will our sons and daughters think of us if we continue to, proverbially, kick the can down the road? What do we stand for? What fight are we willing to undertake? What, if any, “ship” are we willing to go down with? “…Get back on board, for (bleeping) sake!” was the order of Commander DiFalco. What “ship” are you being called to return to, even though it may be tilting, damaged, and taking on water? Whose life is worth your return, my presence, and our stand for endurance? What work or business have you left undone? Some causes are only determined by “going all the way.” The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth, explaining to them that it was precisely as a result of Jesus’ resurrection and victory over sin, death, and the grave, as well as the promise of a future resurrection and of life eternal, that we, as believers not only have the motivation, but also the eternal responsibility for our lives here, on earth. In other words, our fate rests in whether or not we are willing to stand and not run, retreat, quit, or abandon.
“Therefore… be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (1 Cor. 15:58,KJV) It will be helpful to note that the Greek interpretation of verse 58 has much to do with the emphasis that we should let nothing move us. It carries the idea of total immobility and motionless (a thought that most of us can’t quite conceptualize, or we equate with being sick, paralyzed, or otherwise weakness), for it seems as if one isn’t doing anything. But, the point is, we shouldn’t even budge one inch when it comes to God’s Will and Plan being carried out in our lives. Remember Moses’ admonition to the Hebrews: “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord…” (Exo. 14:13). Devotion and loyalty are still jewels of great value. No one can really argue against “whistleblowers” when laws have been broken, safety, and lives are being compromised. However, “team players” are almost passé. Just ask Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco, whose teammate, free safety, Ed Reed “dissed” him in a Sirius Satellite Radio interview during the week leading up to the AFC Championship game. On an even deeper level, what can we say about Rev. Ralph David Abernathy’s “revelation” in his book, And the Walls Came Tumbling Down, regarding his closest friend? For shame. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 45
