from the editor
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou halt be saved.
PERFECT TIMING Jackie Epps Editor-in-Chief
This month Christians all over the world will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will trace the steps and events that led to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. We will remember the seven last utterances of Jesus from the cross. We will tell the story of how Jesus died on the cross on Friday, how he was buried in a borrowed tomb and how on the third day, early Sunday morning, He rose from the dead with all power in His hands. We call this the ‘Good News’ of Jesus Christ! As believers, can you imagine a life without Jesus? What would life be like if Jesus had not got up from the grave? It would be a life without hope. We would be most miserable. In the times of trouble we would not be able to go to the throne of God boldly with our petitions. And more important, we would not have Jesus sitting at the right hand of God as our intercessor pleading our case to the Almighty God. But, because He lives, we have hope and we have a peace that the world does not understand.
Romans 10:9
But the story does not stop there. We as believers have the responsibility to keep the story alive. As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ there will be many who will not be celebrating
because they are not aware of the ‘Good News’. It would be a shame if we as believers did not take this awesome opportunity to share the ‘Good News’ with non-believers. This is the perfect season to give those who are without hope a hope. The Lent season is the perfect time to let those who walk in darkness know that Jesus is the light of the world. Someone needs to know that Jesus came so that we would be able to live life victoriously. Someone needs to know today that Jesus is our Savior, and that today is their day of salvation. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13 ‘Resurrection Sunday’ is the highest celebration in the Christian life. How awesome it would be to share the ‘Good News’ during this season with our brothers and sisters and see their lives be changed by the salvation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That would be a glorious ‘Resurrection Sunday’ for all!
Happy Resurrection Sunday! www.gracenglorymagazine.org 7
Q&A interview
The year 2011 marks the 20th pastoral anniversary of this Baltimore, Maryland native, Bishop Reginald Lamont Kennedy. From the moment he preached his inaugural gospel message at the tender age of 11, this anointed man of God has touched and is touching hundreds of lives. Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church, located in the heart of Baltimore’s inner city, acknowledges that God sent this young pastor to them twenty years ago knowing the future and heightened level of ministry upon which they would embark together. Bishop Kennedy’s pastoral stops included duties as Assistant to the Pastor at Timothy Baptist Church and Assistant Pastor at Good Tidings Baptist Church in Baltimore, and Chaplain for the University of Maryland Police Department before assuming the full-time pastorate of Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church. Whether you call him Pastor, Preacher, or Teacher—Bishop Reginald L. Kennedy is a true minister—God’s man, in God’s place, doing God’s work, in God’s way, for God’s glory!
G&G: Bishop Kennedy, welcome back! We are excited to be a part of your 20th Pastoral Anniversary Celebration! Tell us how does it feel to reach this point in your life? Bishop Kennedy: It is an unbelievable blessing to look back and see how God has allowed me for the past 20 years to serve as the Pastor of Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church. It is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in my eyes! G&G: Bishop Kennedy, I understand that the church is also celebrating its anniversary. I’m sure there are some exciting events planned for both you and the church. Would you share with us what will be taking place this month? Bishop Kennedy: Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church is celebrating 80 years of the favor and grace of God. By the time you read this article, we will have taken the month of March and changed it from March madness to a ‘March Full of Praise’. Wednesday night Worship Services led up to a Sunday of Celebration, Worship and Fellowship. I am Gospel Tabernacle’s 5th Pastor, and biblically, 5 is the number of grace, and that is exactly what I and the Church have been experiencing. G&G: Bishop Kennedy since we talked with you last, we need an update on what’s been happening with you, let’s fill in the gaps. I hear that you have a new book published. Tell us about this project, what was the inspiration behind this book? What will someone glean from your new book after reading it? 8 8 April April 2011 2011 || Grace&Glory Grace&Glory
Q&A interview Bishop Kennedy: My latest book is entitled ‘What Really Works in Ministry? Being a Reflection of God’. It was birthed out of my doctoral thesis. It is a wonderful book that will give the reader several different things. It begins by giving the reader a good definition of Christian Ministry, and will help the reader to understand that before you can know what works in ministry, you must first submit yourself to be worked on. After reading the book, you will realize that what works in ministry is truly being a reflection of God. G&G: Bishop Kennedy, being someone who has been in ministry as long as you have, I would like to shift gears a little and talk with you about some of the hard issues facing the Black Church. With the levels of violence, school dropouts, drug addiction and child abandonment that have become normal in black America. To get to the Promised Land, we will need to rebuild the infrastructure of the black family, the neighborhood and the church. The question remains: Who will do this work? Bishop Kennedy: This question is full of potential responses, so let me say this. We must not forget that the family is important to God. In fact, God created the institution called family before He created the Church. So with God, family comes first. Strong families make for strong churches and strong and stable communities. It is everyone’s job, and I mean everyone, to work on the crumbling structure of the modern day family. Our morals, standards, and integrity have been violently attacked, and the family has suffered a great blow. When mothers turn to God for strength and fathers turn to God for wisdom and instruction, our children will then have a firm foundation of hope. With that in place, the Church blossoms again and the community becomes whole. G&G: The [Black] church has always been the face of the community. Do you believe we are taking on the responsibility of becoming true servants to people from all walks of life? What would you say is the number one spiritual imperative of this generation? Bishop Kennedy: Let’s not get caught up in the hype. The Church (Black) is still strong, still mighty, and still being used by God to be a blessing to all walks of life. It is imperative that we continue to lift the standards of God and His Word without compromise.
Bishop Reginald & Lady Kelly Kennedy
G&G: Bishop Kennedy, the Black Church has historically been a source of hope and strength for the African American community, yet in the [Black] church there has always been the question of the credibility of the church. Why do you think this cloud of mistrust exists when it comes to the [Black] church? Have crises with leaders hurt the church’s credibility? Bishop Kennedy: True credibility comes from the one that backs and supports you. Our God is still mighty and still able to do more than we can ask or think. There has been doubt about Church leadership in the minds of African American Church members since there was an African American Church. Recent behavior by some clergy has just added to the cloud of doubt. Sometimes I believe we are doubtful of each other. The lack of integrity on behalf of some clergy has wounded the body, but cannot stop it. G&G: Bishop Kennedy, there have been many articles written in African-American publications about the Black Church. I recently read an article in the Jet Magazine about the Black Church, and this question was posed to several pastors around the country, “Do pastors have too much power?” How would you answer this question? Bishop Kennedy: The question of whether Pastors have too much power, to me, is easy to answer. NO. Pastors do not have too much power. My question is do they have any power? We serve an all powerful God who allows us, as Pastors, to serve His people. He alone has all power. He alone has all authority. It’s all about God. Does a Pastor have influence? Yes, they do. But along with that influence come Godly accountability and the need for Godly integrity. If that is out of order, then we have a mess. G&G: Lastly, Bishop Kennedy, would you give us your assessment on the Body of Christ, where we are right now, where we are going, what we should be doing, etc.? Bishop Kennedy: I really don’t have enough space to answer this question in full, but let me say this. The body of Christ, or the Church, is alive and well. We are still standing on a firm foundation which is the Lord, Jesus Christ. We that are the members of the body suffer at times. Sometimes, we even stumble. But we are connected to the God that never fails. We need to continue to seek God’s instructions, to follow God’s plan, to hear God’s voice, to live God’s way, until He shall come for us. The family of the faithful will survive and thrive. G&G: Bishop Kennedy, we salute you and thank God for you. Happy Anniversary!

Matthew 28:1-6 (NIV) 1
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3
His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
4
The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 5

He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.

ESTATE PLANNING
word on finances
Dr. Kenneth O. Robinson, II Pastor & Certified Estate Planner
“A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.” Proverbs 13:22
The Proper Way to Leave an Inheritance for the Next Generation The financial decisions we make today, will impact our children tomorrow. In fact, the ultimate purpose of wealth accumulation is to pass it onto the next generations in our family line. Once you understand this, your wealth preservation becomes equally important as your wealth accumulation. Several years ago, I had the privilege of taking an Estate Planning course. Although the practice of estate planning has become more common now, at the time I took the course, it was not overly popular. In fact, I had never heard of it prior to registering for the training course. A little over a decade ago, the topic of estate planning was only popular among the rich and wealthy. The average family thought it was only for those who had lots of money and a large estate. I believe that completing the training to become a Certified Estate Planner has had the greatest impact in my life in the area of financial literacy and management. It was during these 8-10 weeks of training, I saw why so many families live under financial stress from generation to generation. I remember leaving this class many times saddened by the secrets being kept from the masses that wealthy people have used for years to maintain their wealth and pass it onto their children. So what is Estate Planning? Estate planning encompasses the accumulation, conservation, and distribution of an estate. The overall purpose of the estate planning process is to develop a strategic plan that will enhance and maintain the financial security of individuals and their families. Why do you need an Estate Plan? First of all, let’s see what an estate is. An estate is the total property owned by an individual prior to the distribution of that property under the terms of will, trust, or inheritance laws. An individual estate includes all assets and valuables. Unknown to many, without an estate plan, everything you worked hard for over the years can be lost at the time of your death. So why do you need an estate plan? We need an estate plan to avoid dying “intestate”. Dying intestate means dying without creating a will or trust especially a trust, which provides instructions for passing your estate onto your heirs. Not having an estate plan is like taking your property and throwing it into a cage with hungry lions, namely the state probate process, lawyers, creditors, estate taxes, and federal taxes. I know we don’t’ like to talk about death, but when you die with any property titled in your personal name, there must be a probate process handled by the state for that
property. You should have a prepared legal document drawn up out of your name in advance of your death that will take care of getting your assets to the rightful heirs. A good estate planner will strategically prepare this legal document, thus protecting you from a variety of taxes such as state probate(4-10%), gift taxes (18-55%), federal estate (37-55%), capital gains on sale(around 28%). These percentages of taxes vary under different administrations slightly, but still have a great impact on your assets and your ability to pass your hard earned assets onto your children. There are many examples of individuals such as Tupac Shakur and Redd Foxx, who although they had accumulated a great deal of wealth, were unable to pass it onto their loved ones. Today, we live in a litigious society and the moment you get something or start accumulating wealth or reach a certain financial status; you must protect and preserve your property and possessions to leave to the next generation. The good book says it best, “A good man (or woman who is the head of household) leaves an inheritance for his children’s children (grandchildren).” Proverbs 13:22a. You see we have a financial and moral responsibility to the next generation to leave an inheritance. Several years ago, I learned that it is the preparing of an inheritance (an estate plan) for the next generation that qualifies you for the wealth transfer. This is why the next clause in the above Proverb states, “but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” Proverbs 13:22b There are many other components of Estate Planning not discussed in this article; however I have given you the basic concept so that you can start properly preparing an inheritance for the next generation. Below are some practical steps to get you started: 1. Contact a Certified Estate Planner or an attorney that provides estate planning services in your state. 2. Take an inventory of all your assets and liabilities and list them. Your Estate Planner will need this information first. 3. Pray that God makes you a “blessing” to your family, especially your children (Genesis 12:1-3) 4. Make sure your estate plan includes your church or some charitable beneficiary.

education digest
Make the Investment Eliminate as much distraction as possible. Since many young people will study in their own rooms, function becomes more important than beauty.
W
e live in a fast-paced, time sensitive, microwave, I wanted it yesterday society. There never seems to be enough time to complete all of the tasks in any given day. In fact, we don’t have time for ourselves, not even a quiet moment to just sit down and reflect. If you are a parent or guardian of school-aged children, time is critical when it comes to investing in their academic success. Right now, your involvement may not go any further than asking the following questions, “Do you have homework,” or “When is your assignment due.” I believe these are important questions. However, we must go beyond those basic questions and delve deeper into the educational lives of our children. Jeanne Shay Schumm and Yvonne D. Perry in an article entitled, “Solutions to Five Common Homework Challenges,” contend that the relationship between the home and the school is important. “If you want your child to achieve academic success, you must become involved in the educational process.” According to the Child Development Institute, “Parents play an essential role in learning. Assisting with homework and test preparation is one of the most important responsibilities parents have in their children’s education.” They add, “Certain key practices will make life easier for everyone in the family when it comes to study time and study organization.” They offer some of the following suggestions:
• Turn off the tv set. Make a house rule, depending on the location of the set, that when it is study time, it is “no TV” time. A television set that is on will draw youngsters like bees to honey.
• Designate specific areas for homework and studying. Possibilities include the child’s room or the kitchen or dining room table.
• Organize study and homework projects. Get a large calendar, one that Dr. Tim Tooten, Sr. allows space for jotting down things in the daily boxes. Rip it apart so that you (and the child) can sequentially mount the school months for the current semester.
• Should parents help with homework?
Yes-if it is clearly productive to do so, such as calling out spelling words or checking a math problem that won’t prove. No-if it is something the child can clearly handle himself and learn from the process. How much help is too much help? This is an issue worth exploring since there have been numerous instances where parents and guardians have crossed the line in making the investment in their children’s education. A survey conducted by Kelton Research and published by the Los Angeles Times found that 43% of parents have done kids’ homework. They admitted to doing their children’s homework at least once to ease the strain. Almost half the dads, 47%, owned up to doing the homework, while 39% of mothers did so. Kids who hope to persuade (con?) parents into doing homework have a better shot if mom and dad are older. Of parents 18-24, 33% say they’ve done their children’s homework for them, compared with 45% of 25- to 44-year-old parents. For more information on homework tips review this website: http://www. childdevelopmentinfo.com/learning/studytips.shtml www.gracenglorymagazine.org 19

Deidre Showell Deidre Stephanie Showell affectionately known as Aunt Dee Dee went from labor to reward on February 13, 2011, a mortician, interior decorator, wedding coordinator, fashion consultant, and special event’s planner. She did what she could for people in need, and just out of the pureness of her heart, she loved people. She sowed seed into lots of people, ministries, and gospel artists and it was evident during her homegoing services. People from far and near were deeply saddened by her untimely transition. She was key in starting some of the largest holiday concerts in Baltimore, bringing everybody who was anybody in music to First Apostolic. While she was a prayer warrior, intercessor, minister and missionary in her own right, she didn’t have any titles, other than a servant of God and a Bishop’s daughter. Her life and contributions to the people she had a chance to touch exemplified her selflessness and pure passion just to see people progress, be prosperous, and never experience lack if she had anything to do with it. Day Two “Celebration of God’s Crowning Glory” (funeral) was also one of victory and celebration incorporating some of the kingdom’s most noted clergy, gospel artists and city officials. The officiate of the service was Bishop Iona Locke. On hand to speak of Deidre’s lifetime contributions and words of comfort was Bishop Delano Ellis, Bishop James Nelson Sr., and her brother Bishop Cornelius Showell. Psalmists were, Pastor Kervey Brown, Elder Lorraine Stancil-Lawson, Evangelist Karen Clarke-Sheard, and Min. Byron Cage. The Eulogist of the service was Rev. Jackie McCullough. She personally pushed me to go beyond my biggest dreams, set my standards high, and always made me feel nothing was too big or impossible with God. She personally vowed to be godmother to my son and was a great godparent, I will miss her very much! While her earthly existence has ceased, the impact she had on my life shall remain with me, as well as those she touched. I salute you Deidre Showell, “Take your crown you’ve earned it and deserve it.”

Get Connected – a primary doctor can help you stay healthy
Friends. Family. Neighbors. We all have relationships we value. It’s a good idea to make one of them the relationship between you and your physician. In fact, a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows that shows that a strong patient-physician connection leads to better-quality. Primary care physicians are the leaders of your healthcare team and know your medical history and the health issues you face. They provide the full range of care including: • Preventive care like check-ups, flu shots and other immunizations • Care for minor illnesses and injuries • Health screenings to catch common problems early • Ongoing management of chronic health issues such as heart disease, diabetes and asthma And, when more specialized care is needed, he or she works with other types of doctors. Researchers found that patients who had a primary care physician were more likely to receive recommended care and health screenings than those who didn’t see a specific doctor regularly. The American Academy of Family Physicians reports that people who have an ongoing relationship with a primary provider tend to enjoy better health and have lower total health care costs than people who don’t routinely see a doctor.
Make a connection. Aim to have a doctor who: • Knows and understands your medical history, including your risk factors for specific health problems. • Is aware of which medications you use and is familiar with them. • Schedules you for regular checkups and screenings. • Can refer you to other medical specialists as necessary. • Is easy to talk to about your health — even about sensitive topics. Are you looking for a primary care physician? Linden Medical Group has several locations in the community. Primary care is available at our Armory Place location on the campus of Maryland General Hospital and in Bolton Hill. Honesty
Is Still the Best Policy In a recent conversation with my daughter regarding motives, she was questioning the hearts of some persons and if they are honest in their dealings with others. Unfortunately in today’s culture, we are more likely to be suspicious of others than to be trusting of them. Identity theft, Ponzi schemes and persons that make promises but do not keep them, all lead us to be less trusting and more cynical in our dealings with people in every area of our lives. We are all called to speak the “truth in love” and to “fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made”. Honesty is the foundation of trust in relationships and is essential to the life of a Believer. This truth is not just with others but with ourselves and ultimately with God. Honesty is still the best policy because we are warned in the Scriptures that “He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart.” 1 Corinthians 4:5

dealing with each other but it is the best position to take as followers of Jesus. Showing humility, integrity and respect for others is what honesty is all about. It is difficult to overcome a breech of trust. Trust is the foundation of any relationship and honesty is one of the ways trust is built. The book, The Speed of Trust by Stephen M.R. Covey, conveys the importance of trust in our personal and business relationships. He concluded that, “high-trust individuals are more likely to be promoted, make more money, receive the best opportunities, and have more fulfilling and joyful relationships.” The bottom line of this book acknowledges that, “trust truly is the one thing that changes everything.”
Honesty and trust are at the foundation of our relationship with the Lord. We believe and trust in God and act on our belief with behaviors that represent the one we believe in. Honesty and Honesty with your self is the first transparency is what God is looking step. Many times we ask others to for when we commune with him be what we are not ourselves. This Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD in prayer, when we worship and is challenging at times because praise him and when we interact has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived we tend to either be overly critical with each other. God wants us in complete honesty! of ourselves or too generous in to have a pure heart for Him and Psalm 32:2 (NLT) our self-assessment. One way or a love for each other. Honesty another, we must begin to see what keeps us in right relationship with God sees and challenge ourselves to grow in the areas where God and helps us draw closer to God. We have seen the growth is needed. In our dealings with others we need to outcome of those who have lived a lie or who make a living begin thinking of what is good for the other person instead of by cheating the customers and disregarding the business looking out for our own interests. Philippians 2:3-4 encourages partners. They may prosper for a season but when the covers us to do just that. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain are pulled back and their deeds are brought to light, they reap conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not what they have sown and oftentimes bring others down with looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests them. Honesty is still the best policy because it is a reflection of the others.” This is not the popular stance to take when of a heart yielded to God and determined to please him. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 25 25 www.gracenglorymagazine.org

Water:
nutrition & you
Sorting Through the Many Types Confused about the many different kinds of water? This article will summarize the many choices available to you as a consumer.
Purified water
Purified water is usually nothing more than water that is either distilled or treated to remove impurities (contaminants and minerals). Different treatments are used to produce purified water, including charcoal filtering, reverse osmosis, and deionization. Dasani® and Aquafina® bottled water are nothing more than this. The water can come from wells, springs, or the public drinking supply.
Spring water
Spring water comes from underground and naturally flows to the surface of the ground. Spring water is collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring.
Mineral water
Mineral water contains not less than 250 parts per million of total dissolved mineral solids, such as calcium and magnesium. The manufacturer cannot add the minerals to the water; the minerals must occur naturally. Mineral water must originate from a protected underground water source.
Sparkling water
Sparkling water contains naturally occurring or added carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide produces effervescence and increases mouth feel.
Distilled water
Distilled water is created when water is boiled until vapor is created. The vapor is collected and then cooled until it returns to a liquid state. Distillation removes bacteria, viruses, cysts, heavy metals, and other particulates. To remove all of the bacteria, etc., it is necessary to combine distillation with carbon filtration. The myth that distilled water leaches minerals from the body is pure fiction. Distilled water will pick up the taste of the plastic that it is stored in. It is best stored in glass bottles. Distilled water is most often used for pharmaceutical purposes.
Seltzer water
Classified as a soft drink, seltzer water is flavorless water with induced carbonation. You can consume it plain or use it as a mixer for alcoholic drinks and soda-fountain confections.
Tonic water
Classified as a soft drink, tonic water is flavored with quinine and infused with carbon dioxide to create effervescence. Quinine is a bitter alkaloid obtained from the cinchona tree, which is native to the Andes Mountains and also grown in Southeast Asia and India.
Flavored water
Added flavors, extracts, essences, or fruit juice concentrates derived from spices or fruits must comprise less than 1%, by weight, of the final product. No sweeteners or other additives are allowed. Carbon dioxide often is used to create effervescence.

LOSE WEIGHT WHILE YOU SLEEP!
body basics
Charles Harris III AFAA Certified Fitness Trainer
Many people believe that being healthy only involves good nutrition, cardiovascular training and strength training. That is far from the truth, getting proper rest is essential to leading a full and healthy life. One sure way to drop some excess pounds is to give your body the rest it needs. Getting at least 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep, every night has been proven to enhance your life in many ways. While it may be obvious that sleep is beneficial, most people don’t realize how much sleep they need and why it is so important. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, your body manages and requires sleep in much the same way that it regulates the need for eating, drinking, and breathing. Extensive research has been done on the effects of sleep. These studies have consistently shown that sleep plays a vital role in promoting physical health, longevity, and emotional well-being. Also, these studies further show that people who get fewer hours of sleep per night tend to weigh more. Our body needs sleep so that it can rebuild lean muscle mass which allows us to burn more fat even as we rest. Some experts believe that lack of sleep is one reason for America’s obesity epidemic. Individuals who get fewer hours of sleep per night tend to weigh more. Sanjay Patel, M. D., a researcher at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, found that those who slept five hours or less a night were 30% more likely to gain 30 – plus pounds than those who got more rest. The National Sleep Foundation found that the average woman gets six hours and 40 minutes of sleep most nights. Many people are sleep deprived for various reasons, such as, hectic work schedules, family responsibilities, and stress. When our bodies are under stress, we release a stress hormone called cortisol which throws our body off balance, resulting in not only weight gain, but other physical and psychological issues. That’s why stress management techniques are important and is useful before “calling it a night.” I have listed a few benefits of getting a good night’s sleep. • A good night’s sleep will help rejuvenate your mind and body and prepare you for the next day. • A good night’s sleep will help your body rebuild lean muscle mass after a good weight training workout and burn calories while you sleep. • A good night’s sleep will help heal tired and sore muscles from daily activities. • A good night’s sleep will help regulate your metabolic rate which will help burn fat. Now that we have listed some ways that sleep can help your body lose weight, Here are some practical ways that will help you get some quality “Z’s.”
Benefits of Getting a Good Night’s Sleep...
Room Decor – The way your room is arranged is very important as to how you can achieve quality sleep. Make sure you have relaxing colors such as light green, baby blue or other colors that make you feel calm. Also, be sure to have comfortable comforters, bed sheets, blankets and pillows. Lighting should be dim when you are about to fall asleep. Make sure your room is clean and clutter-free; the air quality and circulation are important for your breathing. A humidifier can help. A cooler room is more comfortable than having a room that is too hot. If you are sweating throughout the night, it can interrupt a good night’s sleep. Be sure to find a comfortable temperature to help you relax. Avoid having a TV on when trying to fall asleep because this can prevent you from reaching stage three of the sleep cycle.
Meditation techniques – When we take time to meditate or do some deep breathing exercises, this will help relax your mind and body and also relieve stress. Individuals who practice meditation tend to have a decreased metabolic rate, and because of this, the heart works less strenuously to pump blood throughout the body. Along with this drop in cholesterol levels, there’s also a reduction of free radicals. So set aside 5-15 minutes a few times a week to meditate. I find that taking a bath is a two for one way to relax the mind and body. Brainstorming – A busy mind is a guaranteed way to toss and turn and lose sleep. A good way to help release those clustered thoughts is to grab a pen and pad and write them down. Writing them down will help you subconsciously relieve stress and rest throughout the night. Reading – Reading a good book is always a great relaxing tool to help ease the mind and shift your body into relaxation mode. Reading inspirational books is one of my favorite ways to end my night on a positive note. Let me tell you! It’s better than the 11 o’clock news. Soft music – Inspirational or mellow music is always a good recipe to help you fall asleep. Also, you can use natural sound effects such as rain and waterfall CDs to create a tranquil environment. Eat right – Try to avoid eating heavy meals within two hours before turning in. When you eat a heavy meal before you go to bed, you will cause your body to lose quality sleep. The digestive system will have to work overtime throughout the night to digest your food. If you must eat a meal before you go to the bed, make sure it is light, such as, soup or salad. Protein is a good choice because it helps repair damage and rebuilds torn muscle tissue. Going to bed hungry will also disturb your sleep. Also, avoid all caffeinated drinks before going to bed. Warm bath – A warm bath with Epson or sea salt will help you relax and prepare you for a good night sleep. I suggest at least three times a week. Try burning some candles and relax for at least 20 minutes, this is one of the best ways to prepare your body and mind for relaxation. Herbal tea – Chamomile and Sleepytime tea is a good way to unwind after a long hard day. A cup of hot tea will sooth your body and help you rest. It has been proven if you do these simple things, you not only lose weight but, it can help you live longer! Sign me up! www.gracenglorymagazine.org 29

a woman’s perspective Many times in life we are faced with issues that boggle us. It could be an unfaithful spouse, financial burden, disobedient child, draining occupation or a mixture of all that life has to offer negatively. How do you handle those trials and tribulations? Where do you get your guidance from? As Christians we usually have a hard time understanding that just because we are Christians it does not grant us immunity to life’s trials and tribulations. We often question, why if God loves us would he allow us to go through?
Do you make Lemonade with your Lemons? Since our creation God had a purpose for our lives. We were created to be in the image of his son. Our life was ordained to handle the adversities of life. You see what does not kill us only makes us STRONGER! Trials and tribulation develop strong Godly traits, so when you think you are suffering make lemonade and REJOICE. Through our pain it will only produce perseverance, hope, faith, and strength. Until Next Time… Keep Hope, Faith and Strength in the Lord and ENJOY a big glass of LEMONADE.

ave you ever wondered about what it would be like if someone you looked up to was not around anymore? How about if you were told you were next in line to do something great? The Bible states, “Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children
of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that I have given unto you, as I said unto Moses.” (Joshua 1: 1-3) Joshua was probably like most of us thinking we have plenty of time and can continue to follow without any real responsibility. However, it is important for us to realize that our lives are a series of preparation. Everything that has happened to us is preparing us for “a moment”. Life is full of training and development
and there are clear lessons in every experience. Your next assignment in life is not just any assignment. God has purposely positioned you for such a time as this . . . that’s why you were not born in the 1970’s (well some of us). Just know that you are on God’s radar and that every challenge and opportunity has prepared you to move forward. It is important that you remain focused and obedient to whatever God is saying for you to do in this season.

Yet Still He Rose
N
ow the Passover of the Jews was approaching, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. There He found in the temple [enclosure] those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting there [also at their stands]. And having made a lash (a whip) of cords, He drove them all out of the temple [enclosure]--both the sheep and the oxen--spilling and scattering the brokers’ money and upsetting and tossing around their trays (their stands). Then to those who sold the doves He said, Take these things away (out of here)! Make not My Father’s house a house of merchandise (a marketplace, a sales shop)! And His disciples remembered that it is written [in the Holy Scriptures], Zeal (the fervor of love) for Your house will eat Me up. [I will be consumed with jealousy for the honor of Your house.] Then the Jews retorted, What sign can You show us, seeing You do these things? [What sign, miracle, token, indication can You give us as evidence that You have authority and are commissioned to act in this way?] Jesus answered them, Destroy (undo) this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again. Then the Jews replied, it took forty-six years to build this temple (sanctuary), and will You raise it up in three days? But He had spoken of the temple which was His body. [John 2:13-21 - Amplified Bible] The Passover of the Jews was approaching and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, Jesus walking into the temple found oxen, sheep and doves being sold in it and the moneychangers were there also. So great was His indignance that He made a whip of cords and drove them out of the temple. The indignation came because of Jesus’ zeal for His Father’s house. They had made the house of God into a marketplace. Jesus was consumed with jealousy for the honor of His Father’s house. After all, the temple was the place which God ordained as a house of prayer for all mankind. The Jews responded with asking Jesus for a sign as to His authority to chase the moneychangers out of the temple. Obviously they had not taken seriously the many miracles that Jesus had done. Had they taken Jesus seriously they would have known that Jesus was truly the Son of God. Here we see the mercy of God – God, Himself in the flesh – being angrily questioned by man who He made in His image and likeness. Jesus’ response startled them! It startled them, because they were looking at Jesus as mere man. They wanted a sign – evidence that He had the authority to do what He did. Had they thought about Him spiritually, they would have known Jesus was not talking about a physical building, but His body being the
temple of God. In the natural realm, the odds were stacked high against Jesus or so they thought. When one leans to their own understanding, they begin to see things naturally and not spiritually – [Proverbs 3:4-5 - Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and Donna acknowledge Him and He will direct Williams-Ross and make straight and plain your paths. When not looked at spiritually, life as it is being experienced now can be very fearful and challenging. Jesus knew that the temple He was speaking about was His body. He knew that in spite of what the people said or believed, God – His Father was faithful and would not leave Him in Sheol. There was absolutely nothing or no one that could stop the plan of redemption. God had that plan in effect before the foundation of the world. Jesus would YET STILL RISE! Jesus boldly declared “Destroy [undo] this temple and in three days I will raise it up again.” How could that be? How could the temple be rebuilt in three days? In their eyes and with their limited understanding of spiritual things, Jesus was, “Just Joseph, the carpenter’s son. His sisters and brothers are amongst us.” Yet still in spite of how they looked at Jesus, He would still rise. In three days, the words that He spoke came to pass and Jesus was resurrected. What are you personally dealing with now, that in the natural, if God doesn’t resurrect it, it will not be resurrected? If God does not show up in three days with the money for the mortgage –your house will be foreclosed, the child will be doing life in prison, your health will fail, the financial aid will be stopped, etc. Just know that when the pressure is on, you can then put the pressure back on your situation by praising God. Yes you will rise again! God is faithful and will not leave nor forsake you. Yes, just like Jesus, you will have your Gethsemane moment, -- a time when you will say, “Nevertheless, not my will but Your will be done Father,” but know that God will not leave you there. It may seem like He has turned His back on you, but I repeat you will rise again. Know that Jesus rose again and so will you. I encourage you to stand in the face of adversity and let the enemy know that you will rise again, just like Jesus rose. I encourage you to remember that God will make a way of escape for you to bear whatever you are dealing with. Prayer: Father, in the Name of Jesus, as the world gets ready to celebrate “Resurrection Day”, I thank You that even at my worst, you still predestined a “Resurrection Day” for me. As You are, so am I in this earth, I will rise again, above all the trials and challenges that I am facing right now, amen. Happy Resurrection Day from the Word of Encouragement Family and may God’s richest blessings be bestowed upon you. www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 37 37
Carter’s Commentary
“A Little Springtime Consideration, Please” “For, lo, the winter is past…. The flowers
away.” (Solomon’s Song 2:11-13, edited)
1. Let’s start by leaving time alone! Can we, all, agree that we do not like “Spring-ing forward or Fall-ing backward?” Founding father and genius Benjamin Franklin is credited with conceiving the idea of Daylight Savings Time in order for the citizenry (especially farmers) to enjoy summer evenings, while working longer, yada, yada, yada. Well, that’s all well and good, however having set our clocks, let’s just refuse to change them back this Fall. Needless to say, our country is far from the agricultural society it once was. And the notion of saving electricity?... C’mon let’s be real.
At the time of this article’s publication, we should be at least two weeks into the season of Spring. At the time of the writing of this article, we are just a few days away from the official start of the season of Spring, Sunday, March 20, at 7:21 p.m. to be precise. I’ve been thinking about some of the more mundane, if not idiosyncratic, aspects of our culture and community. And, granted, some of my thoughts are applicable year-round, but it would seem that the season of Spring amplifies and heightens some of these tendencies. This is so, because in all likelihood we are out and about more, due to warmer weather and longer summer days.
2. All drivers should learn how to park properly. There’s just no need to be on the line, over the line, beyond the line, or short of the line. Stay within your line(s), and I’ll stay within mine. Our vehicles suffer enough damage thanks to snow and ice removal chemicals and rocks and other debris kicking back from the 18 wheeled trucks, without needing to be constantly dinged on the parking lots of malls and grocery stores… and, yes, churches. And, when it comes to parallel parking, if necessary, take a refresher course. According to the Maryland Driver’s License Handbook, vehicles must be within 12 inches of the curb. Not 10 feet; in the middle of the street!
appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come. The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grapes give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come
Moreover, as the scripture heading points out, love is in the air. There’s a sense of renewal and a spirit of playful exuberance that comes with Spring. And, I contend that love isn’t the only thing in the air. Inasmuch as we’re going to be outside more, now that winter has passed, I would appreciate it if we would seek to show a little more consideration to each other. Our manners and civility are eroding. Since we’re going to be up in each others faces a little more, let’s try not to aggravate or annoy each other by being mindful of a few simple things. Come on, even with the joy of Spring, we still have a number of issues, stresses, responsibilities, and worries. Why compound such with undue acts that only irritate, like sucking one’s teeth? I recognize that we, all, have bad days, and sometimes our bad days are accompanied, for example, by bad breath. Bad breath, or halitosis (it’s more serious form) doesn’t have to be. We can put something on our stomachs. After the cup of coffee, we can have a mint… or two. And, if it’s chronic, as in a gum disease, we can visit a dentist. Oh, oh, oh, and let’s not forget to not only brush our teeth and use mouthwash, but let’s not forget to brush our tongue, as well. And, so, on the lighter side of my monthly observations, I just want to air the following pet peeves that our Spring of 2011 will be a little more enjoyable as we find ourselves in each other’s company a little more frequently. Yes, these observations are not exclusive to or for this season. They, generally, can be applied year-round.

3. Drivers should stop pulling out in front of oncoming traffic, AT THE LAST SECOND! This seems to be a new phenomenon regarding frequency. We’re all spotted with a few mistakes in misjudging the rate of speed that a vehicle is traveling toward us, as we wait our time to turn onto the lane that they’re coming toward us on. However, there seems to be a new kind of driver who doesn’t even care that a vehicle’s coming or they’re just “Mr. Magoo blind.” And, then, when they turn in front of us and onto our lane with only seconds to spare from us side-swiping or rear-ending them, they want to do 15 mph and slow us down, as we find ourselves hemmed in behind them on a two-lane (one in each direction) road, inappropriately gesturing and cursing at them (in the privacy of our vehicle). Which brings me to this: 4. Without contradicting myself (smile), profanity must be put in check. I know it’s commonplace and mostly accepted. But, there are still a few of us who haven’t crossed that bridge, yet—at least, not where the public domain is concerned. As I stood in the line of a convenience store, recently, a young man carried on a profanity laced conversation with whomever was on the other end of his cell phone as if he was in the privacy of his own dwelling. He could’ve cared less about anyone else in the store as he spoke so matter-of-factly. Respect, respect, respect. Where has it gone? Speaking of cell phones….
5. All of you loud cell phone talkers, please… please use your inside voice! The rest of us do not need to hear you talking about your corporate meetings, your dinner plans, your grandmother’s hip replacement, the fact that your plane just landed, or (again) hear you cursing. Cell phones do not need to be shouted into. Ok? Deal? Good. 6. Let’s stay with this general theme for this next one. Close talkers. The 90’s Seinfeld sitcom devoted an entire episode to this subject. Rent it. Each of us has an imaginary space around us that should only be penetrated by personal invitation. This space is referred to as proximics. Let’s stop invading each others proximics. There’s no need for you to have your belly bumping mine or your nose touching mine just for the sake of conversation. Especially when you need a mint. Oh, yes. Also, in the same thematic family: you low talkers. Hey, amp it up a decibel or two. We get tired of asking, “What did you say?” or “Can you repeat that?’ After a while, we just act like we’re listening, nodding our heads or saying, “uh huh,” and you just may be saying something important and worthwhile. 7. I suppose I could go on, but as we know seven is a good number to stop with. So, finally, inasmuch as it’s warmer, etc., although it may be too late, let’s not “jump the shark” with our Spring/Summer attire. You know, the whole pajama thing…. See, there are certain clothes for certain occasions. There are indoor clothes and there are outdoor clothes. There are outer garments and there are undergarments. There are street clothes and there are sleep clothes. There is being dressed and there being naked. These distinctions are for a reason and purpose. We are humans not animals (generally speaking). A little demonstration of our humanity will go a long way in maintaining, if not re-establishing, what most of us considers obvious codes of conduct, decency, and good ol’ fashioned manners. Whew! It feels good to get that out, in the air.
