Hope
from the editor
“Stay hopeful”
- President Barack Obama
R
ecently, President Obama was interviewed by Barbara Walters at her annual Christmas visit to the White House. In the interview that aired on the television program 20/20, Ms. Walters asked the President what he would like to say to the American people as it relates to the New Year. President Obama’s answer was, “Stay hopeful.” The President’s answer was enlightening to me because that is what resonates in my spirit at the end of every year. Just one thing ‘hope’. At the start of every New Year we look back and reflect upon what did or did not happen. Sometimes we look back with regret and sometimes we look back with thanksgiving. Nevertheless there isn’t much left to do about 2011 but let it go and keep moving forward. There is always hope for the future. It is now a brand new year and many of us are looking toward this New Year with a fresh new hope! What is hope? Well, the modern idea of hope is “to wish for, to expect, but without certainty of the fulfillment; to desire very much, but with no real assurance of getting your desire.” In Scripture, according to the Hebrew and Greek words translated by the word “hope”, hope is an indication of certainty. “Hope” in Scripture means “a strong and confident expectation.” Hope is akin to trust. For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. Romans 8:24-25 There’s a lot that can be said about hope. There is
always room for hope in everything we do in life. With all who live there is hope. In fact one of the constant messages in the word of God is the message of hope. Hope is woven into the many stories and parables in the scriptures. Anyone who is among the living has hope. Ecclesiastes 9:4a God is called “the God of Hope.” This means He is the source of all real hope. If we are going to have hope (confident expectation), it must come from Him for He alone has the power to give it. Hope gives us power to live courageously, to be all God has called us to be in Christ. This New Year my prayer is that you will never lose your hope for the future. That Hope that depends on the Word of God. That Hope that depends on knowing and resting in God’s grace. My soul waits in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. Psalm 62:5
Happy New Year!

G&G: Bishop Holloway, Happy New Year! I am so grateful for this opportunity to talk with you again. You are a phenomenal woman of God and a true visionary of hope and restoration. I understand much has happened since our last talk, so let’s catch up. Let’s start with the latest edition to the Kingdom Village, a center for women. When did this center open and what is the vision and mission for this new center? Is it parallel to the men’s center? Bishop Holloway: : Happy New Year to Grace & Glory! I am so happy to be a part of Grace & Glory 2012. Yes, much has happened since we last talked. Our baby in the making has been birthed which is Kingdom Village (KV) 2420 Brooks Drive Suitland, MD. Last time we talked it was in its developmental stage and now it is one year old. As we approach this anniversary KV has housed 300 women and children. KV opened in December of 2010. The vision is Health, Wealth and Influence and our mission is, “Making People Whole Through GOD’s Holy Word.” Yes, it is parallel to Kingdom Center (KC) which can house up to 300 men; KV can house up to 150 women and children per day.
G&G: What are some of the programs being offered for women? What are the criteria for women, who would like to take advantage of the programs, is the center open to women with children? Have there been any challenges with opening this center for women? Bishop Holloway: Some 2420 Brooks Drive, Suitland, MD 20744 of the programs offered include clothing donations, counseling, life coaching, job Dorm Room AFTER Dorm Room BEFORE readiness, entrepreneurial opportunities, spiritual counseling and case management. Case management supplies our women with referrals to their particular source of need. The center is open to women and children and the only criteria is that one must need help, want help and be willing to receive help, finances are not a criteria. The day I drove up to see the building, we had just finished rehabbing our KC location. On our way to the building I said I would just look and not buy anything when I reached the Sanctuary BEFORE Sanctuary AFTER building. I said, “I don’t need another building, gas bill, water building I heard GOD say this is our women and children’s bill, electric bill, trash bill, food bill insurance bill, etc. I need facility; call it Kingdom Village. We average close to $20,000 another building like I need a doughnut, I don’t need a doughnut a month in debt services. When we acquired the building it had and I don’t need another building.” Upon looking at the

been abandoned, all of the copper piping, air conditioners, heaters, and appliances had been stolen. Additionally, the property had been formally used to house alcoholic and pedophile priests. So there were physical challenges, economic challenges and spiritual challenges. Our greatest challenge continues to be that the need for programs such as this is growing, but the resources and supports are dwindling; yet the people are still in need of help. G&G: Bishop Holloway, what can you tell us about the women that come through the doors and have been restored by this center? Bishop Holloway: The best way to address this question is through the testimonies of our women which can only be told by them. (Read testimonies with “Before” and “After” photos of Dawn and Ambia in sidebar to the right). G&G: Bishop Holloway, let’s shift gears and talk about some projects you are working on personally. I understand there is a documentary in the works about your life. You must be very excited. Please tell us about this venture. Bishop Holloway: The documentary talks about the House of Help City of Hope aka (Kingdom City-Waldorf, MD; Kingdom Village-Suitland, MD and Grace View Apartments-Washington, DC) and the 20,000 people that have received services within our fifteen years of existence and the high success rate we have enjoyed within those years. The producer is Bruce Brown the owner of Filmworks. Mr. Brown produced the HBO special depicting the life of former Mayor Marion Barry of Washington, DC as well as directed and produced the movie ‘24/7’. He is preparing an all star cast to make the book ‘Seen Glory Untold Story’ into a motion picture. G&G: : Bishop Holloway another successful venture for you is your radio program. What is the format of your program and your target audience? When are you on the air and what can listeners gain by tuning in to your show? Bishop Holloway: GOD is truly blessing and showing much favor. As of January 2012, we will be on WYCB 1340AM each Thursday afternoon from 12:30pm-1:00pm. Listeners can access the show either by calling 202-432-1340 or by logging onto www.myspiritdc.com. Our daily broadcast ‘Keeping It Real With Bishop Dr. Shirley Holloway’ airs on Blog talk radio Mon-Fri 7:30am -8:30am. Listeners may join in on our lively discussions by either logging into www.blogtalkradio.com or by dialing 1-646-200-4998. Each week day offers a different focus: Monday is Transitions Hour, Tuesday is Prophetic Hour, Wednesday is Political Hour, Thursday is Pastors Corner and Friday is Economic Recovery Hour. It is a morning cup of coffee for our listeners. Also we are excited about the Bishop Holloway Show which will host special guests, along with our dancers and band. It is shown locally and soon to be aired nationally and internationally. Additionally, our show Legendary Teachings, which teaches Godly Principles, is another show which offers spiritual food to our viewers. Readers may check their local listings for show times and station assignments. In addition to radio and television, we are also featured quarterly in the African American Lifestyles magazine with our article Kingdom Life Styles. You could say that it is going to be an extremely busy, but productive and effective 2012. Continued on page 10

BEFORE AFTER My name is DawnThompson. I entered into the program January 9, 2011. I have been clean for more than a year and give credit to this ministry for doing a lot to help me in my recovery. My life has changed a lot. I am no longer stealing, walking the streets or doing the things Satan wanted me to do. I am so happy, I’ve never been happy until now. I am doing things now that I never thought I could do. The way I feel now I never thought I would feel. I was diagnosed with being Bi-Polar and had thoughts of suicide. I am proud to say that today, my doctor is working to take me off my medication and I have not had any thoughts of suicide in the past four months. “GOD IS GOOD” When I first came here, Bishop welcomed me with open arms and love. This ministry is what I needed. God is working on bringing me and my sons back together, he is healing the relationship between me and my sisters. I never thought that I would be able to say these things, but GOD is good, GOD is moving tremendously in my life. I am currently working in children’s ministry, I am teaching children’s church and I LOVE IT! I also, help to look after Bishop’s grandkids; it’s just a joy to be trusted again. This ministry has made it possible for me to forget the bad things that have happened to me in my life and move into the life God has for me.

I came to the House of Help City of Hope in August 2009 from being incarcerated. I completed the program after six months in February 2010. During that time I received my high school diploma. After making some bad choices, I chose to re-enter the program again at the new Kingdom Village location on January 12, 2011. Once again I completed the 6 month program and chose to stay for the transitional living program. Being here has brought my family closer together. My daughters are now with me at Kingdom Village and are very happy. Our relationship is getting stronger day by day. I am now a house leader and working in the intake department for the women. I am very grateful to Bishop Dr. Shirley Holloway and the House of Help City of Hope staff and also Kingdom Word and Worship Center members for their support and prayers. I am eternally grateful. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 99 www.gracenglorymagazine.org
Q&A interview Continued from page 9 G&G: Bishop Holloway you mentioned to me that your vision this year is on health, wealth and influence. Would you elaborate on this topic? You also told me your theme for 2012 is, “Sip, savor and enjoy life’s new wine and become a new wine skin.” Would you mind sharing with us the revelation behind this theme? Was this a prophetic word you received from the Lord? Bishop Holloway: Our theme for 2012 Sip, Savor and Enjoy Life’s New Wine and Become a New Wine Skin is the revelation that the Lord gave me for His people in this season and this hour. GOD’s people must learn to be happy with the smallest accomplishments and to savor the moment. The people of this age are focused on gulping, acquiring, and conquering; but those of us of the Kingdom must not despise small beginnings. We must allow GOD to seed, grow, build, develop and manifest in our lives while we become new wineskins. Matthew 9:17 says that, “Neither is new wine put into old wine skins; for if it is, the skins will burst and are torn into pieces and the wine is spilled and the skins are ruined. But new wine is to be put into fresh wineskins and so both are preserved.” The operative word in this text is preserved which means to make alive, to protect and maintain, to be kept, and to prevent spoilage; thus making our dreams, visions and destinies successful and manageable. God is willing to invest new wine in us and the latter will be greater than the former; this is the season for us to walk in our latter wine. G&G: Bishop Holloway, finally what do you have planned for 2012 as it relates to Kingdom City/Kingdom Village? What’s on the horizon? Bishop Holloway: The Horizon is producing a leadership force that is equipped, delivered and humbled warriors that have submitted to intense perpetual training. Along with our increase in the intake of souls into the kingdom to be loved, nurtured, disciple and developed. We have been asked to go into Harlem, New York and various parts of Africa, Russia and Haiti to establish Houses of Help Cities of Hope in various countries. So world here we come literally. G&G: Bishop Holloway, what would you like to see happen in 2012 for you personally? Bishop Holloway: As Shirley the Bishop I am excited about the increase in the Kingdom of Christ and the awesome growth and maturity that I see coming to the body of Christ despite the recent and continuous mockery of unrighteous leaders who perpetrate and are predators of the infants and immature of the Kingdom of God. In an atmosphere of truth, we are so reminded that all things are going to work for the good of those who love the Lord; for when the enemy comes in like a flood God is raising the standards. Thus causing us to walk in discernment and in a clearness of mind; coming into the unity and knowledge of who GOD is and who we are. We minimize the ability of the enemy to cause the people of GOD to be tossed to and fro by every wind and doctrine. The lines of denomination shall begin to disappear and the stand of truth and righteousness shall become the common denominator. As the CEO and founder of HOHCOH, I am excited about the emerging leaders that are coming to the vision… this is every mother’s dream and I am living mine. As an entrepreneur I am 10 10 January 2012 | Grace&Glory January 2012 | Grace&Glory
excited about my Mary Kay business. I am a new director and have just earned my free car and am in the process of “Shuttin’ It Down and Getting’ it Done” to (NSD) National Sales Director in 2013 with my Pink Cadillac. Also as an entrepreneur, I am working diligently to grow my Star Diva Express clothing line; where I serve as a buyer/designer for many clients. Readers can go to www.stardivaexpress.com to view my wonderful selection of women, men and even children’s fashions. As Shirley the person, I am presently driven by a personal conviction and righteous political revolution to see the right people in the right position doing the right thing for the people and with the people. Currently, I am one of the campaign leaders for the Reverend William “Bill” Bennett who is running for 2012 Ward 7 Council Seat… We are in it to win with Bennett. As a mother I am enjoying my son, daughter and son-in-law who are presently working and teaching in the ministry with me shoulder to shoulder. As a grandmother I adore my 2 year old grand- daughter Shemiah who sings, prays, worships and shouts intensely. My grandson Isaiah who recites scripture chapter and verse and my grandson Jeremiah who plays the drums both are age 3. As Shirley the woman I am dating after being a widow for four years and I am loving it..who knows what 2012 holds for me and love? G&G: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? Bishop Holloway: My favorite saying is WOW; it has been an absolute blast. Thank you for choosing and having me in an awesome magazine such as Grace and Glory. Until next time may God’s grace, mercy and favor be multiplied to you and all of your readers. Sip, Savor and Enjoy Life’s New Wine and Embrace new wineskins. We adhere the unhindered shift transition and season of a new dimension.

Our Level of Commitment to Our Decisions O
By Dr. Bishop Shirley Holloway
ften vows are made in hasty, anxious and foggy atmospheres. They are made from emotions, highs and lows without knowledge, understanding or analysis. Here is where the immature, undeveloped mind and the soul cause great disaster and destruction. The Psalmist David said in 1 Corinthians 13:11, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; now that I have become a man, I am done with childish ways and have put them aside.” This is the season; this is the year to be committed to your decisions, to put forth the study time, the homework, to do the analysis and the heart check. Jesus encouraged us to make our calling and election sure. The word decision means to decide, meaning to die to all other options. The word commitment means to stay, or to stick with something. In this new season every decision big or small needs to be done through prayer, preparation and analysis. The book of James Chapter 1 verse 8, says, “Let not an unstable minded man ask God for anything for he is unstable in all his ways.” Let us as citizens of the kingdom of GOD make our calling and election sure. Let’s keep our vows, weigh them and count the cost of them before we speak. Let’s become stable in our decisions, through the rain through the storm, through the ups and downs. Let’s remember GOD loves, supports and answers a stable mind. Know what your covenant is and with whom your covenant is with. How can two walk together except they agree? In this New Year, look for those who are stable, consistent, committed, dedicated, loyal with same like minds, same like spirits, same like hearts to connect with. Spend time, pay attention, listen and learn what’s around you and who’s around you that you may be able to make decisions and be committed with those who are committed with you. In this season don’t just let the job interview you, you interview it; don’t just date that person, make that person date you; don’t just become that friend, make that friend become yours. Do the homework, do the investigation, and do the analysis. Make your commitment, your decision and your calling and take it serious in this season. Have a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! Remember Information+Application+Time equals Transformation. Join us for service:

STATE OF MARYLAND OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
MARTIN O’MALLEY GOVERNOR STATE HOUSE 100 STATE CIRCLE ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND 21401-1925 (410) 974--3901 (TOLL FREE) 1-800-811-8336
TTY USERS CALL VIA MD RELAY
MISSION TO INDIA In November, together with a delegation of more than 100 Marylanders, First Lady O’Malley and I led a historic trade mission to India. It was our State’s largest-ever economic development mission, and the first trade mission to India ever led by a sitting Maryland governor. Our delegation included business leaders, leaders from our universities and community colleges, county executives, and delegates. Over the course of our trip, we signed a number of business deals that will help us create jobs for Marylanders, expand our fastgrowing, high-potential industries like cybersecurity and information technology, and strengthen our relationships with our neighbors in India. One of the deals we forged was between the Baltimore-based company Premier Rides, which manufactures theme park rides, and Mumbai-based Adlabs Entertainment. They signed a $7 million deal in which Premier agreed to design and manufacture a custom theme park attraction for a new amusement park Adlabs will build in India. Another great Baltimore-based company, CyberPoint International, signed a $10 million deal with New Delhi-based Appin Security Group to jointly develop new security solutions for mobile devices. And Jasco Nutri Foods, an India-based manufacturer and exporter of organic foods, has agreed to invest $10 million to open a new facility in Maryland. The plans for the location will be finalized over the next two months, but we expect the new facility to generate up to 100 jobs when it’s up and running. Every business paid its own way to travel with us on the mission because they understood the tremendous opportunities available to grow their businesses in India. All told, we brought home close to $60 million in deals with Indian companies. And that’s just the beginning of the benefits we can achieve when we strengthen our ties to India – one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Last year, India was Maryland’s 12th largest export market – up from 18th just six years ago. Maryland businesses exported $192 million of goods and services to India so far this year, up 18% from 2010. And India’s needs continue to grow. In fact, in the next five years alone, India will invest $1.7 trillion in infrastructure. They will construct 12,500 miles of roads, 12 new port/container projects, and 25 new “Greenfield” airports, and they’ll generate 150,000 MW of new power plant capacity. All these projects mean one thing for Maryland businesses: continued opportunities to expand and create jobs for Marylanders. And for Indian companies like Jasco Nutri Foods, there’s no better place than Maryland to invest and create jobs. No other state in America has the same combination of location, workforce, and world-class facilities. Our public schools rank #1 in the country, we have the most Ph.D. scientists and engineers per capita and we are home to 27 technology incubators, including an international incubator. Maryland is a great place to live, work and do business. And through economic development missions like the one we just completed, we can get the word out to investors and businesses around the world, too. As our world continues to grow more interconnected, and as technology allows us to exchange goods, services and knowledge faster than ever, we have more opportunities than ever before to grow by partnering with our neighbors in India and around the world. One of the things that makes our State great is our outreach and trade with peoples around the world. It’s our legacy, it’s our tradition, and it’s our history. And it’s the best way for us to move forward, create jobs, and build a better future for our kids.
Sincerely,
Martin O’Malley Governor

Time
Keeping TracK of
education digest
I enter this New Year without having made a single resolution. For me, this is not out of the ordinary. I can’t remember the last time I made a resolution. However, if there is one area of my life that needs improvement, it’s making better use of my time. I know there are 24 hours in a day, but there are times I desire a few extra hours. In searching the scriptures, I came across these passages in . . .
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, 6a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. 1
• Make a To-Do List Every Day. Put things that are most important at the top and do them first. And don't forget to reward yourself for your accomplishments.
• Determine Your Priorities. You can’t do everything at once. Establish the importance of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.
• Use Spare Minutes Wisely. When you’re commuting on the bus or train, use the time to get some reading done.
I want to add to this list an area where I often struggle when it comes to prioritizing my time. It’s learning when to say “NO.” I want to recommend the Holy Bible as a guide to making better use of your time. It’s not a resolution, but let’s challenge each other to spend more time in prayer and devotion with Jesus Christ.
• Get a Good Night's Sleep. Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
As I consider the challenge of time management, I raise the question of how can we make better use of our time as pastors, parishioner, parents and pupils. The College Board, the company which administers the popular SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test), offers some valuable time management tips I believe can help us all in 2013.
• Communicate Your Schedule to Others. If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available at certain times of day and not to expect a response at other times. • Don't Waste Time Agonizing. Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you're supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.

Book Shelf The T.D. Jakes Relationship Bible T.D. Jakes We have made it to a new year! With everyone making New Year’s resolutions of getting healthier, and working out and being more disciplined, I thought what better resolution than to become more dedicated to reading the one book that could change your life. My pick to start 2012 off is the Bible, but not just any Bible… The T.D. Jakes Relationship Bible. We are surrounded by relationships every day; whether it’s with family and friends or with co-worker or with the bus driver that we see every morning taking us to work. There are Bibles geared toward strengthening men, women, teens, children, students as individuals. This Bible is geared towards strengthening individuals as they are engage in a relationship with God, His Word and with other people. What sets this version of the Bible apart from others is not that T.D. Jakes chose to use the King James Version because he says, “The precision of translation for which it is historically renowned, the simple yet grand language, and it’s majesty of style have made it [his] personal version of choice”. It is his approach to the presentation of the Book. He starts off with explaining to the reader the importance of having a relationship with your Bible, why a relationship is so important and how God’s love for man was established from page one. He provides a 50-day reading plan and a 1-year reading plan, but in my opinion the treasure found in this Bible (other

than the fact that it’s God’s word) is the 150 articles and 10 prayers imbedded within the chapters that provide insight on the subject matter. The articles are broken down into sections: Reflections of God’s Heart, Lessons of the Heart, Relationship Builder, Relationship Breakers, Prayers for Relationships. If you enjoy your Bible and are
ready for a new approach to reading it, this is a good one. If you are a collector of different versions of the Bible, the Relationship Bible is a must have. If you are ready to elevate your relationships on all levels, read this book. It will also make a great gift for someone who needs to work on their relationships. In any case, the T.D. Jakes Relationship Bible is a must have. In the words of the author, “You are invited to begin a life long journey to discovering God’s words of truth for your life and relationships, and to discovering God himself in the words of His Book!”
About The Author
Bishop T.D. Jakes A Ministerial and business visionary, entrepreneurial trailblazer, altruistic philanthropist, and spiritual shepherd to millions around the globe, Bishop Thomas Dexter (T.D.) Jakes, Sr., founded Greater Emmanuel Temple of Faith, his first pastorate, in 1979. It was a small beginning, in a small West Virginia church, pastoring a small, 10-member congregation. More than 25 years later, Bishop Jakes pastors what Christianity Today calls “one of America’s fastest growing mega-churches.” The Potter’s House, a multiracial, nondenominational church with 50-plus active outreach ministries, has dominated church growth records since its inception in 1996. In its 10-year existence, the church has grown from the 50 families that relocated with the Jakes family from West Virginia to Dallas to more than 30,000 members. Rivaling many corporations, the ministry employs nearly 400 staff members, including full-time finance, human resources, information technology, materials distribution, public relations, publications and television production departments. The Potter’s House is fiscally sound, retiring within four years the financial debt incurred by the 191,000 square feet, $45 million sanctuary construction. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 21

Get organized and clear the clutter with these clever ideas, methods, and products. Tip 1: Clear it out
Distinguish clothing and shoes that you wear and items that you need to get rid of. You can do this by the golden rule of closet organizing: If you haven't worn it in a year, toss it. Also, if it doesn't fit you well, it is time to get rid of it. Instead of hanging on to your "skinny jeans" until you lose a few pounds, donate them. Then, when you get down to your goal weight, treat yourself to a new, stylish pair of jeans. If you are on the fence about an item, "flag" the hanger. As you wear each item, remove the flag. At the end of each season, items that are still marked with a flag should be donated. If the item is in good condition and/or if you paid a lot for it, think about selling it at a local consignment store or online at a site such as eBay. Tip 2: If the shoe fits
If you are keeping your shoe boxes, label what is inside. We like the Post-it Durable Tabs because they offer a writable surface and are quick and easy to apply. Alternatively, invest in clear shoe boxes with drawer-front pulls; they allow you to see what’s inside so you can easily access your shoes. Tip 3: Measure up Once you have whittled down your wardrobe, you need to assess the layout of your closet. Measure the space you have, making sure to utilize backs of doors, floor space, and all interior 22 January 2012 | Grace&Glory January 2012 | Grace&Glory 22
walls. When you go to shop for boxes, bins, and other necessary space-savers, make sure you have your closet measurements in hand. Use every square inch of your closet. Hang shoe racks on the back of your closet door. Classic belt hangers with multiple hooks are also a good solution for hanging camisoles, bras, or scarves. Tip 4: Get hung up Invest in the right kind of hanger for the type of clothing you are hanging. Use padded hangers for items made from delicate fabrics, plastic hangers for button-down shirts, and sturdy wood hangers for suit jackets as they help retain the shape of the items. Remove all wire hangers (they don’t properly support your clothes) and plastic dry-cleaner bags (they don’t allow
fashion focus fabrics to breathe, keeping the chemicals used in dry cleaning in your clothes). Save time in the morning by coordinating your wardrobe. Sort by color, and hang liketypes of clothing together (i.e. skirts, pants, blouses, etc.). Tip 5: No sweat Sort sweaters, T-shirts, and other folded clothing by color as well. Always remove sweaters from hangers and fold them. Hangers will ruin the shape of sweaters over time. Store sweaters on shelves in manageable-sized stacks using sweater dividers to keep them from turning into leaning towers of Pisa. Even better, store them in sweater boxes with well-marked labels. Tip 6: Eyes have it Keep items you use frequently at eye level or below and items you rarely use higher up. Labeled boxes are good for storing things like bathing suits or turtlenecks because you can rotate them higher or lower in your closet depending on the season. Move any snow boots, rain boots, or other “outdoor” gear to your front hall closet (or mudroom if you are lucky enough to have one); restrict what goes in your clothes closet to dress shoes only. Tip 7: Seasonal change It’s possible that no matter how much you try to edit and organize, you just have too much stuff to fit in your closet. If that’s the case, then you need to
resort to a seasonal system by rotating your fall/winter clothes with your spring/summer clothes. Covered clothing racks can be filled with out-of-season clothes and kept in your attic or basement or under your bed. Flat storage boxes can serve a similar purpose. Tip 8: Linen closets Store folded sets of bed linens inside one of the set’s pillowcases. Group samesize sheet sets together on shelves. Use attractive, easyto-attach tags to mark the edge of the shelf with sheet sizes. Tip 9: Storing table linens Always clean and iron table linens after use. Tablecloths are best stored hanging from a pant or skirt hanger in your closet. Bundle clean, folded, matching napkins together in a paper or plastic bag and loop it over the top of the hanger. Tip 10: China and crystal You don’t have to take up precious kitchen cabinet space to store your crystal and china unless you use both frequently. Find a safe place elsewhere in your dining room, basement, or other closet. Place paper coffee filters in between each plate and bowl before you stack each on top of one another. Do not store crystal rim-sidedown, as the rim is the most delicate part of the glass. Also, make sure you leave enough room in between glasses so they don’t knock rims and accidentally chip. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 23 23 www.gracenglorymagazine.org

A Healthier You Can Mean a Healthier Baby When you're pregnant, a lot of things you do can have an effect on your baby — an effect that continues long after your baby is born. That's why it's crucial to take care of yourself and make good decisions about diet, exercise, health care and lifestyle habits during this important time.
Prenatal care
Pregnant women who see a health care provider regularly have fewer problems during pregnancy and delivery and healthier babies than women who don't get adequate prenatal care, according to the March of Dimes.
Exercise
Following a regular exercise program during pregnancy may help labor and delivery go more smoothly, and being in good physical condition may make it easier to get back in shape after childbirth. If you were exercising before you became pregnant, it's usually OK to continue. But ask your provider about which exercises are safe for you. If you don't already exercise, start slowly and don't overdo it.
During your prenatal visits, your provider will talk with you about the best ways to give your baby a healthy start in life, answer any questions you might have, and check to make sure you and your baby are healthy. Regular prenatal care also gives your provider a better chance to detect and treat potential problems early, according to the National Women's Health Information Center. “Regular prenatal care is extremely important for the mother and the baby,” noted Dr. Bruce Gneshin, Maryland General’s Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “In addition to the regular prenatal care provided by our physicians and nurse midwives, we also offer educational support to expectant mothers through a series of prenatal classes which focus on what to expect during each trimester of pregnancy.” FREE Prenatal Classes

THE SCIENCE OF WEIGHT LOSS
By Herline A. Knights, RD, LD The Science of losing weight is really very simple. Now hold up! Wait a minute! Before you stop reading, turn off your computer, role your eyes, suck your teeth, mutter ‘oh please, you don’t know what you’re talking about’ or any other platitude of outrage. Hear me out. I did not say losing weight is easy. In fact, as most people know, quite the opposite is true. What I am talking about is the science of losing weight. What Science am I talking about? Science is defined as the knowledge of commonly accepted truths or principles. So what is the commonly accepted truth or principle that leads to weight loss? Well, your body has to burn more energy or calories than it takes in (remember calories are the energy stored in foods). In other words, calories out must be greater than calories in. That’s it! No, E=mc2. No quantum theory. No mind bending physics or chemistry. Simply eat fewer calories than you burn. So why then do we have so much trouble losing weight? Let’s look at that equation again. Calories in = Calories out. If this equation is true for you, then you should not lose or gain weight. In order to lose weight you have to change this equation in one of three ways. You can decrease the energy in. You can increase the energy out. Or, you can do both. Let’s take each in turn. It is helpful to start with how much calories you use. We use energy simply to live. Energy is required for your heart to beat, lungs to breathe and for our bodies to do the million of things we are not even aware of in order to stay alive. Dietitians refer to this as your basic energy expenditure.
This amount varies from person to person. An additional amount of energy may be used in some illnesses, for instance, extensive burns. Then, more energy is used based on your level of activity. A football player will burn more energy than a spectator. Knowing how much calories you use can help you to determine how much food you are able to eat and still lose weight. A dietitian can help you to do this calculation. The overall speed with which you use calories is called your metabolic rate. It is because everyone has a different metabolic rate that you might eat the same food as your friend yet you gain weight and she doesn’t. But this is true of many areas of life. Remember that guy in the back of your math class who was half asleep most of the time but aced all the exams. You, on the other hand, sat in the front row, took plenty of notes, burned the midnight oil and still needed a bonus question to make an A. The lesson here is that you had to work harder but you still made an A. Similarly, you might have to work harder than your friend but you can still lose weight. While much of the calories you burn are beyond your control, you can increase your metabolic rate by increasing your level of activity and thus, the amount of energy out. However, all activities are not created equal. Aerobic exercises such as walking or running will cause you to burn more calories while exercising but weight training will increase your metabolic rate even after exercising. And ladies, please! A little weight training for a few minutes a day will not make you look like Xena, The Warrior Princess.
That requires endless hours in the gym. Guys wish it were that easy. In contrast to the calories out, you have total control of the calories you put into your body. An effective strategy to reduce the calories you take in requires a decrease in the amount of food and careful selection of the kinds of food you eat. It doesn’t matter how healthful the food, if you eat too much of it you will gain weight. Again, all foods are not created equal. Some foods have more calories per serving than others. A dietitian can be very helpful in sorting these out for you. Then there are foods which require you to use more energy just to digest them. Proteins fall in this category. Be careful when decreasing your caloric intake. A drastic reduction in your daily calories in can be counterproductive. If you decrease the calories in your diet too rapidly, the body senses this as a threat and goes into survival mode. It slows down your metabolic rate and sends out signals to stimulate your appetite. And when you do eat, more of it is stored as fat. Not what you want. The trick is to reduce your calories slowly enough to evade your body alarm system. Finally, the most effective strategy to lose weight and maintain that weight loss over a long period of time is a combination of increased calories out and decreased calories in. Increasing calories out would allow you to be less restrictive in your diet. In addition, careful selection of food, whether it’s foods that require you use more energy to digest them or foods with less calories per serving, can help you to feel full yet lose weight. Move On
to your good health
It’s Time To
Sometimes we are faced with situations and circumstances in our lives that need a fresh look or need to be eliminated once and for all. By Carla J. Debman, MS, LCPC
We have allowed certain behaviors; conditions and people stay around past their expiration date. We have tolerated attitudes, mistreatment, neglect and abuse one time too many and now have finally come to the point where we realize it is time to move on. The realization that things have changed for the better or the worse can take time to adjust to. It is in Carla J. Debnam, MS, LCPC times like these that we remember the Executive Director, wisdom of Ecclesiastes 3:1, “There is Renaissance a time for everything, and a season for Christian Counseling Center every activity under heaven.” The New Year affords us an opportunity to look ahead and leave some things behind. Our best days are ahead of us and the opportunity to ‘live your best life’ as Oprah would say is within reach. The freshness of this brand new segment of time gives way to hope and dreams that in previous years had gone unrecognized. Everyone can benefit from moving on but many do not possess the courage to change. Change is frightening and that is why many people stay in certain places too long. Knowing the signs that point to a season of change is critical. We stay past our welcome in relationships, jobs and other areas because we miss the shift in the environment and begin to make accommodations instead of taking steps that would allow for growth. Pruning needs to take place in order for plants to grow. We have a similar process to endure if we are to grow. In John 15: 1-2, Jesus explains the progression of growth, “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.” A fruitful future is available to those who learn how to move on and leave their unproductive places behind. In the book, Necessary Endings by Dr. Henry Cloud, he argues that, “Our personal and professional lives can only improve to the degree that we can see endings as a necessary step to something better.” We cannot experience the best of God when we hold on to what is comfortable. It may be time to move on when all your resources have been exhausted in an area and future growth is unlikely. It may be time to move on when you begin to realize that no matter what improvements you make, personally or professionally, nothing seems to change around you. It may be time to move on when you have finally given up hope that sticking around will make a difference. Whatever your situation remember that you cannot become the new creature in Christ until old things have passed away. Embrace this season of your life and move on knowing that God is with you. www.gracenglorymagazine.org 31

No More Excuses This is Your Year!!
Another year has come and gone and you said, “2011 is my year to get this body in shape.” You started out so well with those early morning jobs and faithful gym visits. You even changed your eating habits. You were so proud! What happened? Why did you stop? Are material things more important than the temple God has blessed you with? No matter what the world thinks, this does not have to be another failed New Year resolution. You don’t have to let your dreams for that perfect body go to waste. You can do it! If it makes you feel any better; thousands of others have followed in your footsteps. They too started a fitness plan last year that fell short. What makes you different is your determination to really see your fitness goals through. You can refocus and begin again TODAY! Start with a simple exercise program. Just pick one exercise and stick with it. Doing sit-ups everyday would be a good place to start. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your body will respond. There is an ancient proverb that says, “A man should not be judged by the amount of times he falls, but by the amount of times he arises.” 2012 is your year, there is no excuse!
10 WAYS TO JUMP START YOUR FITNESS PLAN 1. Choose one simple exercise and be consistent. 2. It’s more fun if you have an exercise partner. 3. Hire a personal trainer and pay in advance. Most people hate to lose money. 4. Participate in group fi tness classes. Group fitness classes can be “contagious”. 5. If possible, exercise in the morning to avoid being side tracked. 6. Don’t procrastinate, start some type of physical activity today. 7. Eat 4-6 small portion meals to increase and energize your metabolism. 8. Start a stretching program to increase your flexibility. You will feel better! 9. Get at least 8 hours of sleep nightly. This will keep your body rejuvenated. 10. Consider taking a walk on your lunch break. This also, will relieve some stress. www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 33 33

from the pulpit
From the
Pulpit
W
ell, it’s that wonderful time of year…the time when we hunker down and refocus on all of our goals and desires in life as we start a new year! Yet there can also be something very haunting about this time for many. As the year turns I hear more and more expressions of frustration as people vent about what hasn’t come to pass in their lives yet. Amidst all the hope, fertility and expectation that come with the New Year, it is also a reminder that yet another year has passed, and, perhaps, we still have not accessed our promise land. How do we walk in this place of such polarization? Charles Dickens put it as such, “It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times.” The Best of times are most notably marked by the incredible opportunities that lay ahead and the joy that we experience when expectantly peering into our prophetic futures. The worst of times are most notably marked by the discouragement we sense as we realize that all though we’ve left Egypt, Canaan seems a life time away. So, how do we walk in new places? So glad you asked. No book gives a description of how to walk in new places quite like Joshua. The third chapter of Joshua gives some amazing practical keys to walking in New places. The chapter begins by saying that “Joshua rose early”. Though we know this refers to a time before or at dawn, it more specifically points to the spiritual and mental posture of Joshua during this time. When someone rises early they do so usually because they are expecting something or they know they have to be somewhere by a certain time like catching flight or having an appointment. Joshua rose with expectation and so must we! Then in the very same verse the scripture says that they moved from Shittim to Jordan (about an 8 mile walk), but I was startled by what the scripture would say next: “they lodged there”. As dignified as that word lodge sounds I can assure you that there was quite a bit of frustration and attitude. Doesn’t that sound like some of our lives…Hurry up and wait! Just when it seems like we are getting ahead right in the same verse we are made to lie down and “lodge”. We become like a three year old at nap time; the very last thing on our mind is sleep or delay. We want our promise, and we want it NOW! Yet there is great importance in this time of lodging. This grueling, frustrating, seemingly disappointing time of “lodging” is designed to do several things. 1. It teaches us to live life in balance- Joshua rose early strapped with expectation, and yet he was able to rest when it was time to rest. So many of us burn out like a wick burning at both ends because we just don’t live life in balance. Balance is key for walking in new places. Have you ever hiked a new trail or tried walking in the ocean on ground you couldn’t see? Then you’ll note how difficult it would be to do it again if you didn’t have reasonably good balance. Your balance has less to do with the
Walking in New Places
By Tim Manigault Founder of Healing Voice Ministries www.iluvworship.com Follow on Twitter @iluvworship Facebook.com/iluvworship conditions you are walking in and more to do with you. So, how are you scheduling your life? Do you even have a schedule? Schedules are not for “high profile” moguls or people who are trying to be “all that”. Schedules are for people who are attempting to live life in balance. 2. Lodging has a way of settling you and calming the soul. It will literally strengthen expectation while it weakens and ultimately puts to sleep expectations evil twin…anxiety. Think about it; walking in new places can tend to bring quite a bit of anxiety. Most people usually like to control their life but control usually requires insight and or information which most of us don’t have in new places. Remember this: anxiety can only be seated in the place that should be reserved for Godly expectation. Lodging at the Jordan gives you strength to master anxiety. In verse three we see the overarching command of walking in new places as the scripture proclaims “Remove from your place and Go after it”. It is important to note that the “It” in this text is the Ark of the Covenant which was symbolic of God Almighty. That’s huge to note, because the “it” is not interchangeable with our agenda, dreams, material possessions, or high hopes but purely God Almighty. This realization frames our entire journey; when our pursuit is genuinely God our motives are refined, and we are made ever purer in every venture. I know you may be asking: “does that mean that I shouldn’t go after my dreams? What about the things that I feel that God has put on my heart etc.?” Let me ask you a question…when you look at your dream, vision, or promise do you see God? Do you see His Glory? Do you see His heart being filled with joy by your efforts? If so, my friend it’s time to “Remove from your place and Go after it!” Finally, let me note this; unlike the Red Sea the waters did not part before they walked in. This time would be different; the water would not part until the priest actually stepped in. It is almost as if the priest and what they carried was enough to induce a miracle. They would not wait for someone to raise a staff or wait for the conditions to change. This time nature, consisting of seasons, would wait for the “sons of God” to tell it what to do and Joshua did just that. They, with every step taken into water that had not yet parted, declared to the season “you must change”. Nature, waiting with baited breath replied in obedience and so will your season! But it will not respond to a faith that stands on the banks waiting for lightning to flash; no, not this time. This time, your season will respond to a faith that says I’m removing from where I am and Going after it even if I have to step into a river that hasn’t parted yet. My friend, I declare that you are sufficient in all grace, and that you have ALL that you need to divinely achieve it so… “Go after it!” www.gracenglorymagazine.org 35

I have got to say this I am glad that 2011 is over. I do not know about you but my life in 2011 was flipped up and turned upset down. With illness, family, personal and tons of other things I am here to say, Thank You God ! Thank You for the good that made me happy and the bad that gave me strength. Question, what life issues boggled you down? How did you handle it? What lessons did you learn? Well let me answer those as pertaining to me. Last year God revealed to me that I am stronger than I
thought. I need to clean up my life's closet. I need to focus on being the God fearing person I was raised to be. I handled it by opening my heart, ears, mind, and soul to his wisdom. My lesson was easy God is Awesome. NEVER doubt him. What looks like a problem to me is a road barrier being knocked out of my way. As you begin this year remember God will never forsake you, He will carry us through. Have a Blessed New Year! www.gracenglorymagazine.org 37

Have you ever wondered what it would be like being known for doing something great? Maybe not the next Martin Luther King Jr. or Mother Teresa, but what can you do that is great? In Genesis 1:16 during the time of creation God made two great lights. One of these lights would rule the day (the sun) and the lesser would rule the night (the moon). Yes the sun is bigger, brighter, and hotter but this does not take away from the moon’s greatness. Whether you have “sun” greatness or “moon” greatness it is your time to be great. Today we are seeing greatness in a football star Tim Tebow. His greatness is not because he throws the most touchdowns or is the best quarterback. The greatness we see in Tim Tebow is a man that uses his platform as an athlete to give God glory. He is no Tom Brady yet, but in kneeling before God and the world as a humble professional he has stepped into his greatness. Today amateur and professional athletes around this world are
now “Tebowing.” They are giving reverence to God for who God is to them. This is GREAT! In a time when so many negative things are going on in the world it is good to see greatness in action. At times, the great things you do may seem small but to others it is wonderful. Greatness is not only that which is large in size or dimensions but it is also that which is notable, wonderful and first rate. The truth is that we all have greatness within us. Maybe you will be the next leader of the free world or volunteer for habitat for humanity. Greatness is greatness! It is your turn to be Great! Work with youth groups, be an example, go the extra mile. Be a friend to someone who is alone. Love someone who feels loveless and unworthy. You can be great in what you doing now if you are giving God glory while doing it. www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 39 39

Focused on the Goal – Forgetting Those Things Which are Behind. I Press… Should old acquaintances be forgotten, And never brought to mind? Should old acquaintances be forgotten, And days of long ago! “I'm not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don't get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I've got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I'm off and running and I'm not turning back. So let's keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you'll see it yet! Now that we're on the right track, let's stay on it. Stick with me, friends. Keep track of those you see running this same course, headed for this same goal. There are many out there taking other paths, choosing other goals, and trying to get you to go along with them. I've warned you of them many times; sadly, I'm having to do it again. All they want is easy street. They hate Christ's Cross. But easy street is a dead-end street. Those who live there make their bellies their gods; belches are their praise; all they can think of is their appetites. But there's far more to life for us. We're citizens of high heaven! We're waiting the arrival of the Savior, the Master, Jesus Christ, who will transform our earthy bodies into glorious bodies like his own. He'll make us beautiful and whole with the same powerful skill by which he is putting everything as it should be, under and around him.” [Philippians 3:13-21 – The Message Bible] Happy New Year! We are in 2012. The days are indeed getting shorter. Do you have your eyes on the goal? Are you focused? Do you want everything that God has for you? Have you made up your mind and do you purpose to be diligent to the resolutions that you will make this year. The Message Bible takes the fogginess from out of our eyes by making it clear on being prepared for this New Year. The apostle Paul stated, “I'm not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me.” Would you say that you are well on your way also? You too must stay in the race, knowing that Jesus who has run the race before has plotted out the way for your individual race. If you look to Him, you cannot fail. Examine yourself (Gal. 6:4) on a daily basis, because you are a living epistle that will certainly be read of men – the only Christ some may ever see. The Apostle Paul said that he would forget those things which had passed and look towards the future – YOU must go and do likewise. Yes there were some things that we expected to see manifested in 2011, that were not. Yet we press. We started 2011 with visions of what we were going to do and what we expected to see manifested in our lives, but somehow along the way, others disappointed us by not being where we expected them to be and/or when we 40 40 January 2012 | Grace&Glory January 2012 | Grace&Glory
expected them to be there. Let’s not take it personal! God and God alone deserves the glory for where He is taking us and when we get there no one will be able to say, “It was me who got him/her there.” Let’s forget past failures as we lay aside the weights and sins that so easily beset us and run with patience the race that is set before us. The blood of Jesus still avails to cover our sins (I John 1:7). God only sees us through the blood of Jesus and finds us perfect and complete in His sight (Col. 2:10). We are seated in heavenly places with Him (Eph. 2:6). Knowing mankind, sometimes it’s hard to comprehend the way God see us, but that is a fact. Along the way, death came to our homes, yet we persevered knowing that for those who God allowed to come home to be with Him are now absent from the body but present with Him. So once again we continue along life’s journey as we press. Further along the road in this race called “life”, some of our family relationships became somewhat unraveled but God’s word said that we should, “Give all our worries and cares to Him, for He cares about us.” 1 Peter.5:7 Continue to press. You are still here in 2012 by divine appointment and while you are waiting for the return of our Lord and Savior, you still have a job to do presently. You are unique, a Designer Original with a specific assignment to do for the Kingdom of God. Hurts came, but let’s purpose in our hearts to forget past hurts and snubs from friends. This is not the time, nor season to dwell on hurts -- perceived or real. Let’s not allow anything or anyone to sap our energy – or even take away our strength or joy. Certainly do your best to amend bad situations, but do not allow them to slow you down, you still have a race to run. Stop wasting your energy on things that only God can fix and instead concentrate on God – The One who holds all power of heaven and earth and upholds them by the word of His power (Mt. 28:19; Heb. 1:3). Instead press! Therefore walk in a godly manner before the people of the world (Col. 4;5; and Jas. 3:13). Your time here on earth is far shorter than eternity. With that in mind, know for a fact that your God given days here on earth are not to be wasted. It is imperative that you redeem the time (Col. 4:5) and you do so by pressing. Forget past blessings and achievements – strive to do it up BIG and better in 2012. God will make provision for His vision. Don’t try to live on yesterday’s manna (Ex. 16:20) – because God is no longer in yesterday. GOD IS – not was, not will be – HE JUST IS. You need fresh oil from the throne of God today (Ps. 92:10). Continue to look for the coming of Jesus. Make a decision within yourself to be found blameless in Christ in preparation for His return. I encourage you today to look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Prayer: Father, in the Matchless Name of Your Precious Son Jesus, I thank You for bringing me safely into 2012. I am pressing towards the mark of Your high calling upon my life and as I stay my course – all that you have ordained for me will come into being, amen.

How to Properly Plan Your GREATEST Financial Year
T
he American Dream has become a debt nightmare for many, even in the church. If we are honest with ourselves, we all want to own our own home, drive a good car and create a comfortable lifestyle for our family. Among the many goals we will set for 2007 as believers, it is very important that we set financial goals. Many Christians do not adopt this philosophy concerning their finances. They believe that all I have to do is go to church and pray and everything will be ALL RIGHT with my money. Well, that is partly true, but not the complete truth. The truth is God expects you to plan and He promises to direct you in the plan. The wisest and wealthiest man in the Bible said this, “If you PLAN and work hard, you will have plenty; if you get in a hurry, you end up poor.” (Proverbs 21:5 (CEV)) He also said, “A man may plan his course; but the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9 (AAT)) So we can see clearly here in scripture that God expects us to PLAN. One person said “if you fail to PLAN, you plan to FAIL.” Let us see how we can plan for our greatest financial year. In Christ, we should always expect the best and be prepared for the worst. We can do ALL things through Christ that strengthens us. These are steps that can be taken to assist you in your planning:
you are then and only then beginning to get serious about eliminating debt in your life. 2012 is a year of debt-release.
3. Build Liquidity. What this simply means is that you need to create more positive cash flow this year. Most Christians as I often say have “Cash No” or Cash Go”, but what you need is CASHFLOW. Controlling your spending is just the first step, but you also have to build your assets. If you are on a dead end job you need to discover your gift and let it make room for you. (Proverbs 128:16) The economic system today is not set up for 9-5pm workers to get ahead financially. It is modern slavery and bondage. If you sincerely desire and want financial freedom as a believer in Christ, then you must start your own business, or get involved with a Home-Based MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) direct selling business. Don’t quit your 9–5 employment until you have built your business to a place where you are self-sufficient. Real estate is also a way to build liquidity and increase your asset-base. Christians ought to have real estate; the Three (3) reasons why I should plan financially: earth is the Lord’s. (Psalm 24:1)
1. God expects me to play an active part in exercising my mind and abilities.
4. Finally, set short term and long term goals. Goals are your stepping stones to 2. It helps to strengthen your control over life’s your dreams becoming a reality. I thought that I could not live without a CEV – Contemporary English Version cassette player in my vehicle. Several months after I had purchased the AAT – The Complete Bible: An American vehicle, it occurred to me that I was doing fine without it. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Dr. Martin Luther King is remembered as a great orator whose impact on the nation came from the eloquence and inspirational quality of his words. His speeches, sermons and public addresses melded themes of democracy deeply embedded in the American conscience, and reinvigorated these messages with clear and insightful reflections on the true meaning of justice and equality. Within the memorial, quotes from Dr. King's sermons and speeches, are inscribed at a large scale on the smooth surfaces of the inscription wall. These passages will be reinforced through the referential use of water, stone, landscaping and light as metaphorical elements that heighten an awareness of his message. All of the senses will be engaged through the experience of the memorial, and, foremost, through the visual perception of space, using contrast and juxtaposition, scale and height and the bold display of carefully selected words expressing his spirit. The inspirational text and the mood created by the sound of the water, its cooling mists, and the visual complexity of the contrasting rough and smooth surfaces of stone, the gradual changes in grade and the patterns of light and
darkness will dramatically underscore the visual sense of the man and the qualities of courage, conviction and leadership that characterize his life and work. Added to these powerful sensory experiences will be a sculptural representation of Dr. King himself. This is not conceived of as a pure figurative depiction of his physical being, separate and apart from other elements, but rather would give another dimension and layer of meaning to the experience of the memorial as a whole. Dr. King will appear as an integral part of the "Stone of Hope", as if he embodies the stone itself. He will be positioned on the side of the stone facing the Jefferson Memorial and will be gradually revealed as part of the procession towards the Tidal Basin. "There are two types of laws: there are just laws and there are unjust laws...What is the difference between the two?...An unjust law is a man-made code that is out of harmony with the moral law... Paul Tillich has said that sin is separation. Isn't segregation an existential expression of man's tragic separation, an expression of his awful estrangement, his terrible sinfulness?" – Martin Luther King, Jr., 1963
At first, as one enters the main space, the central stone will appear somehow cleft from the stones flanking the portal entry, but pushed forward so as to be visually isolated from the rest of the memorial grounds. As one gets closer to the monolith, its rough hewn edges toward the memorial will begin to take on a vaguely familiar contour, recognizable, but not entirely clear. Finally, as one looks back to the inscription wall and main space from the stone, the image of Dr. King will be fully revealed. He will be seen looking across the Tidal Basin. This representation will stir the emotions, transcend the physical and symbolic and directly engage the imagination of the viewer. World peace through nonviolent means is neither absurd nor unattainable. All other methods have failed. Thus we must begin anew. Nonviolence is a good starting point. Those of us who believe in this method can be voices of reason, sanity, and understanding amid the voices of violence, hatred, and emotion. We can very well set a mood of peace out of which a system of peace can be built. – Martin Luther King, Jr. December 1964 The entire memorial invokes the memory and spiritual presence of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the visual experience of place, reinforced by the full range of sensory perception, the metaphorical use of water, stone and other landscape elements, the powerful display of passages from his sermons and speeches and the appearance of his physical image in the "Stone of Hope".

carter commentary
From Year to Year, One Thing is Sure By Dr. Harold A. Carter, Jr., Pastor
New Shiloh Baptist Church,, Baltimore, MD
“Jesus Christ, the Same Yesterday, and Today, and Forever.”
One of my mantras is, it pays not to get too attached to anything (including people) because everything has time written on it. Such an observation does not prohibit me from having loving relationships with my wife, our sons, and our family. It simply serves as a kind of reality check where temporal things are concerned; that nothing lasts. There is a tangible world, and there is an intangible world. I recall, even as a boy, learning the definitions of these words in Sunday School (yes, Sunday School; it was that long ago, even before New Shiloh’s Saturday Church School). For whatever reason, early on in my life, these definitions stuck: tangible is what we can hold or touch with our hands. Intangible is what we cannot hold or touch with our hands. Time and time again, I have been reminded of the tangible aspect of life, especially when it comes to its oxymoronic nature. It would seem that anything that we can put our hands on should be lasting, enduring… perpetual, eternal; not so. I cannot begin to tell you, as readers of this commentary (although I will try—smile), how often I have been disappointed by products and people that have—for lack of a better word—disappeared. Space will not allow me room to track through my 50 years, so I’ll just focus on the last half-dozen years, or so. Since it’s the Christmas season, let’s start with this. For a number of years, I’d come to rely on the Howard Luggage Store, in Pikesville, for gifts. Mr. Howard, his son, and an older woman had become fond of me, showing up for a number of years, like clockwork, one or two days before “the big day.” Mr. Howard (a Jew) listened to our church’s radio broadcast and would often tell me about how the sermons preached by me, as well as my father, inspired him. Well, as some of you know, a couple of years ago, the store lost its lease; Mr. Howard retired, and left the U.S. to spend time in Jerusalem. I recently saw him—to my surprise—at an information counter, directing passengers to go to the right baggage claim area at Thurgood Marshall/BWI Airport. His store was one of the few stores that carried great items for gift giving, without “breaking one’s bank.” About two years ago, I was told by a bank teller who’d recognized me, as a local pastor, that anytime I’d come to her drive thru lane that there’d be no need for me to send my ID with my transactions. That kind of made me feel a little special, although I wasn’t terribly thrilled about someone recognizing me and being able to connect me with my rather nominal accounts. Needless to say, having returned, over and over again, she’s been nowhere to be found. It seems that it doesn’t matter what it may be, if I like it, something happens to it. There was a delicious brand of ginger ale, called Carver’s, available at a few select grocery stores. Once I discovered it, I’d often try to purchase a case just to have some on hand. Once or twice, I even ordered some of it on-line because I’d begun to notice it wasn’t as regularly available in the grocery stores. I should’ve known. I should’ve seen it coming. CocaCola bought them out and shut them down. About the same time, Dole (you know, as in Dole pineapples?) had come out with a great tasting, 50 calorie orange-tangerine carbonated drink that was quite refreshing. I guess I was one of only a few who enjoyed it, ‘cause Dole ceased producing it. And, to add insult to injury, we know that neither Snapple nor Fuze have ever been the same since the giant conglomerates bought them out.
– HEBREWS 13:8, KJV I am aware that styles, fashions, and merchandise change… hey, for that matter, the world changes, everyday for we’ve witnessed the upheavals and coups of nations around the globe. I am just amazed by the seemingly more than average changes that occur in my little world. For years, I’ve used an Atra razor to shave. However, the Atra razor blades, in my opinion, are somewhat expensive. You can imagine my delight when a couple of companies put discounted blades that fit the Atra razor, on the market, at almost half the cost of the Atra brand. And, they last longer, too. That is, they used to. Not only have the discounted blades disappeared, but the entire Atra brand is no longer in existence. I am the proud owner of two razors and a few residual discounted blades (as the stock is dwindling from store to store). In the same vein, remember the cool store, The Sharper Image? They carried an excellent hair trimmer, used for edging and even clipping. It was, also, great to carry on trips. Boo hoo and “take out the violin,” ‘cause not only did The Sharper Image discontinue it, but The Sharper Image itself no longer exists as a brick and mortar store. It’s become strictly catalog. Still further, who amongst us can keep up with even the seemingly endless advancements of cell phones and tablets? What we have now will soon be passé next year. Before your shoulder is wet with my tears, because I could easily go on: a rare fashionable men’s shoe store, based in Nevada, called Avventura—gone; a wonderful pen store patronized by many that was once a downtown Baltimore staple called Inkwell—gone; and, even good ole Trustworthy, that was a supplier for many in the religious community for Christian goods—gone. Life, then, is replete with variables. Indeed, it has been said that we are here today and gone tomorrow. Some would go so far as to say that we are here today and gone today. Jesus knew this and invited us to appreciate even the simplest things that we might otherwise take for granted. (Ref. St. Mt. 6:26-29) Even though, the intangible things of life have infinite value: peace, joy, love, etc, there is a place and purpose for everything and every relationship, although temporal. There’s not enough room to stockpile everything. Needless to say, even if we could, we would soon use up the stock or it would go to waste or become obsolete. The times, they are-a-changin’. And, it was the late George Benson who sang, “Everything must change. Nothin’ stays the same….” Therefore, with all of life’s vicissitudes, let’s enter into the New Year with confidence that what matters most is the immutability of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ... “a constant friend is He.” I change, we change, things change (science, technology, medicine, relationships, plans, moods, information, etc.) but there is One who remains the same. He has never disappeared, gone out of business, lost His lease, been bought out, or retired. For the past, few years, I’ve sought to share a little Christmas sumthin’ sumthin’ with those who’ve blessed me, in passing, like the postman, etc. For the most part, I’ve given a canister of Hub’s gourmet chocolate covered peanuts. I’d learned a couple of years ago that they were only available seasonally, because the manufacturer didn’t want the warm weather to melt the chocolate, fusing the peanuts together (although similar, and other, products are sold year-round). I’d just come to expect that around this time of the year, they’d be available, again. In fact, it was my desire to see that you, the reader of this commentary, received a canister under your tree. They are quite mouthwatering and delicious. Ahh, but wouldn’t you know it, neither of the two stores that have stocked them carry them anymore. What can I say? www.gracenglorymagazine.org 45
