OUR FATHER This is the month we celebrate our fathers. I know for some, Father’s Day can be painful, a sad reminder of growing up without a father present in the home or being active in their lives. The pain of growing up fatherless can sometimes leave a scar that is hard to remove. There may even be some situations or circumstances that warrant the absence of dad, but to a child without a father these things or reasons mean nothing. But, for every situation, circumstance or reason, father is not there, there is someone who is more than able to fill that void. That someone is God, Our Heavenly Father. Though we all may not fall into the category of growing up without a father, the truth be told there are a large number of dads who are present in the lives of their children. But what I would like to say to those who grew up without a father present and to those who did . . . there is one thing we all have in common, we all can claim the same Father. Our Father which art in heaven. We all share the greatest Father of all, and He has never been an absentee dad. Let me remind you about Our Father. Our Father is omnipresent, He is with you at the same time He is with me, in fact He is everywhere at all times. Our Father is omniscient, He is the wisest of all, He knows everything about each one of us. Our Father is omnipotent, He is all-powerful, He has the ability to do absolutely anything He wants for us. Here are a few more things about Our Father. Our Father is a good provider, He supplies all of our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19). Our Father is a protector; He is our shield and buckler (Psalm 91). Our Father is a comforter; He mends a broken heart (Matthew 5:4). Our Father is a healer; He will restore our bodies (Psalm 103:3). Our Father sounds like a pretty great dad to me. He is great and mighty. He is a friend that sticks closer than any brother. He loves each and every one of us unconditionally with the same amount of love. And let us not forget that Our Father loved us so much that He gave His only begotten son (Jesus) so that we would be able to live with Him eternally! (John 3:16) I could go on and on but I believe the best thing about Our Father is He is whatever you need Him to be whenever you need Him. This Father’s Day as we celebrate our earthly fathers, don’t leave out Our Father which art in Heaven. He is the Greatest!

Peace & Blessings . . .

Q A Interview &

Pastor Stephen M. Smith The Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Baltimore, MD

G&G: Pastor Smith, we salute you this month as you celebrate your 7th Pastoral Anniversary! I am very excited for this opportunity to talk with you. Most pastors have shared with me that ‘preaching the gospel’ was not necessarily what they had planned to do with their lives. Was it the same for you, did you have other plans for your life before your call to ministry?

Pastor Smith: First I would like to thank you for this opportunity

to share with you and the Grace & Glory audience. We are excited also for the 7 years God has allowed us to be together as Pastor and People. Preaching was definitely not part of my plans. Pastoring was out of the question. Growing up I was always involved in sports and had dreams like most young African American men to play professional sports. After a good college football career and a few unsuccessful attempts at professional football, becoming a State Trooper was also something I always wanted to do. God had other plans. I never became a State Trooper and I had a nineteen year career with Fidelity Engineering. G&G: Was your call to ministry a hard call to accept? Please share with us how it all began for you. Was there anyone who significantly influenced your decision about ministry?

Pastor Smith: I remember as a young boy my grandmother talking

about me following the footsteps of my grandfather who was a Pastor. Out of all of my brothers I was the one who gravitated to him. Like most young boys I strayed away because of sports. Growing up everyone seemed to say I was going to be a preacher. I wanted to prove everyone wrong so I did what I had to do to let them know that I could not be a preacher- if you know what I mean. But God has a way of making sure His will is done in our lives. After coming full circle and accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and meeting my wife Wanda, who had invited me to church, is where it all began. Before accepting the call I had to acknowledge the call on my life to ministry. The hardest part was accepting the call to the Pastoral ministry; there are other areas of ministry other than the Pastoral ministry. The one who significantly influenced my decision 8 8 June June 22011 011 || G Grace&Glory race&Glory

about ministry was my Pastor Dr. Haywood Robinson III. G&G: Pastor Smith, as you reflect over the last seven years, what would you say has been your passion in ministry? What is the driving force behind your ministry? What do you believe it takes to be a good pastor in our world today?

Pastor Smith: Over these last seven years my passion in ministry

is to share the word of God and watch people respond not to me but to God and His word. The driving force behind my ministry is knowing that God has chosen me (Isaiah 43:10) and has counted me faithful and trustworthy (1Timothy 1:12). Since He has chosen me and counted me faithful and trustworthy that keeps me humbled and honored to serve Him and His people. To be a good Pastor today one must love the Lord thy God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind (Matt.22:37). Be ready to equip the saints to do the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, until we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Eph. 4:12-13). Be a servant after God’s own heart demonstrating genuine concern, compassion, and care for God’s people. G&G: With the influx of new ministries and hundreds of churches in the Baltimore community, what sets the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and your ministry apart? How would you best describe the ministry of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church? If your ministry could be known for one thing, what would that be?

Pastor Smith:There

has been an influx of new churches and ministries. When we look around there are churches on every corner. I believe that Mt. Moriah is strategically placed in the Walbrook Junction community to make a difference. We are

a church that is making an effort of reaching those that are under forty while at the same time holding on to those over sixty. I would want Mt. Moriah to known for being ‘Faithful Followers’ of the Father reaching the world for Christ.

need in the community surrounding the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church?

G&G: Pastor Smith it has been said in today’s society that it is hard to tell the difference between believers and nonbelievers. During your years of pastoring have you found any areas of ministry frustrating or difficult? Has it become more challenging to reach the unsaved? What do you believe the church should be saying and doing?

Pastor Smith: Some of the issues facing the church today are in

Pastor Smith: Galatians 5:19a says, the works of the flesh are

evident, likewise Gal. 5:22-23 says, the fruit of the spirit are evident. Ministry in itself can be frustrating and seem difficult at times. God’s plan for reaching the unsaved has not changed. His message is still the same. What we as the church must do is change our methods on reaching the lost. How do we do it? We should be Exalting Christ through Worship, Edifying the Christian through the Word, and Evangelizing the Community through Witnessing. G&G: For many of our youth they feel that the church is not relevant to their issues and what they face growing up in today’s society; issues that are much more intense than what we faced growing up. Trust is a major issue for them when it comes to church. How do we gain the trust of our youth and how do we meet them at their need to attract them to the church?

Pastor Smith: We can gain the trust of our youth by being and

becoming more transparent. When the youth see us they see us the way we are now and not the way we were. We look down on them like we have been saved all of our lives, instead of sinners saved by God’s grace. When we can become transparent and share our testimony, they will be open and began to trust us. Letting them know we feel their pain and we all have messed up, but that we serve a God of grace and a God of mercy who looks beyond all our faults and supplies our needs. G&G: Pastor Smith, what issues do you see as the most important ones facing the church right now? What is the most pressing

Lady Wanda and Pastor Stephen Smith

direct connection with the issues we are facing in society today. The church is made up of people and the economic, social issues we are facing as a people are affecting the church. There is no secret that it takes money to do ministry. We are faced with unemployed people who are coming to the church for help and I thank God that He has blessed us to help those in need. The needs around Mt. Moriah are for the young people who have nowhere to go after school or during the summer. They are just hanging around in the streets. It is true that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. This year we are extending our summer enrichment camp through the entire summer and moving to implement a before and after school program in the near future. G&G: Pastor Smith lastly, as you celebrate your 7th Pastoral Anniversary, can you share with us what’s on the horizon for Mt. Moriah Baptist Church that will give you an opportunity to expand your ministry?

Pastor Smith: We are excited about what God is doing with us.

We have just presented a five year vision for the church taking one year at a time. We are branding ourselves in the community so the community will know who we are there. We have just adopted the Walbrook Junction circle letting them know we care and are a part of the community. We believe God gives the vision and He will give the provision. We have just completed our application for our 501c3 (W.O.R.D. Corporation). That will allow us to do so much for our community. We are expanding our ministry outside the walls of the church looking to purchase property for a Community Resource Center and Senior Housing Development. We truly believe, “Eye have not seen nor ears have heard of what great things God has in store for us.” We solicit your prayers as we seek to do the work of the Lord for the expansion of the Kingdom. www.gracenglorymagazine.org www.gracenglorymagazine.org 99

Book  Shelf  The Jesus Book Michael Koulianos I have come across a lot of books that talk about Jesus, but none have painted the picture of who Jesus really was and is like The Jesus Book by Michael Koulianos, founder of Jesus Image out of Orlando, FL. The Jesus Book is a night stand book. It’s one of those books that you keep by your bed and before you go to sleep you’ll read a little and uncover another truth about whom Jesus is. It is well written and easy to read; the type of book that you will read once, twice, and go back for more after that. It LV GHÂżQLWHO\ D ERRN \RX will want to give to everyone you know. The  Post- Workout Meal

Recovering  from  exercise  is  an  important  part  of  the  athlete’s  routine.  Post-workout  foods  and  drinks  can  affect  recovery  by  affecting  fatigue,  repletion  of  glycogen  stores,  and  preparation  for  future  bouts  of  exercise.   For  the  recreational  exerciser,  one  who  exercises  3-4  days/week,  overall  good  nutrition  is  most  important  for  maintenance  of  glycogen  stores,  and  so  muscles  will  have  enough  time  to  rest  and  recover  between  workouts.   For  the  more  vigorous  exerciser,  one  who  exercises  multiple  times/day,  performs  competitively,  or  is  in  training  for  a  sport,  refueling  muscle  glycogen  stores  and  assisting  the  body  in  recovery  is  of  utmost  importance.  Repletion  of  nutrients  lost  through  dietary  intake  is  an  essential  component  in  maximizing  the  body’s  performance.

Repletion  of  muscle  glycogen  stores  To  best  promote  repletion  of  muscle  glycogen  stores,  consume  carbohydrate-rich  foods  within  15  minutes  after  the  workout  has  ended.  Athletes  should  aim  for  1  gram  (g)  of  carbohydrate  for  every  2  pounds  (lb)  of  body  weight/hour,  taken  at  30-minute  intervals  over  4-5  hours.   Example:  A  150-lb  person  should  have  75g  of  carbohydrate  or  300  carbohydrate  FDORULHV FDORULHV RI FDUERK\GUDWHV J 7KH LQGLYLGXDO VKRXOG FRQVXPH WKH ÂżUVW FDORULHV EHJLQQLQJ PLQXWHV DIWHU H[HUFLVLQJ GXULQJ WKH ÂżUVW KRXU DQG FDORULHV each  half  hour  for  the  next  3-4  hours  to  maximize  glycogen  repletion.  7KHVH FDUERK\GUDWH FDORULHV FDQ FRPH IURP IRRGV RU Ă€XLGV 7KH IROORZLQJ DUH VRPH 300-calorie  ideas: ‡ Ă€ R] RI RUDQJH MXLFH DQG WZR VOLFHV RI EUHDG ‡ &HUHDO ZLWK PLON DQG D EDQDQD ‡ Ă€ R] RI MXLFH RU D VSRUWV GULQN DQG D IUXLWHG ORZ IDW \RJXUW   Protein  repletion  after  a  serious  workout  is  less  of  a  key  player  in  the  recovery  diet,  but  a  little  protein  can  enhance  glycogen  replacement  initially  after  exercise.  The  American  diet  is  ubiquitous  in  protein,  and  added  protein  is  not  essential  in  the  post-workout  routine.

Repletion  of  sodium,  potassium,  and  electrolytes  Repletion  of  sodium,  potassium  and  electrolytes  (sometimes  lost  through  sweating)  is  easy  to  do  through  foods.  Supplementation  generally  is  not  recommended.  The  following  are  common  recovery  foods,  which  are  high  in  essential  electrolytes: ‡ 3RWDWRHV ‡ <RJXUW ‡ 2UDQJH MXLFH ‡ %DQDQDV ‡ 6RXS ‡ &HUHDOV ‡ &KHHVH

For  a  child  has  been  born—for  us!  The Â

H APPY FATHER’S Â

word of encouragement

gift  of  a  son—for  us!   He’ll  take  over  the  running  of  the  world.   His  names  will  be:  Amazing  Counselor,  Strong  God,  Eternal  Father,  and  Prince  of  Wholeness.   His  ruling  authority  will  grow,  and  there’ll  be  no  limits  to  the  wholeness  he  brings.   He’ll  rule  from  the  historic  David  throne  over  that  promised  kingdom.   He’ll  put  that  kingdom  on  a  firm  footing  and  keep  it  going  with  fair  dealing  and  right  living,  beginning  now  and  lasting  always.   The  zeal  of  God-of-the-Angel-Armies  will  do  all  this.   [Isaiah  9:6  â€“  The  Message  Bible]
