Remembrance of King Bhumibol By Jirapat Tangittipalakorn (Johnny) To describe the feeling that we as Thais felt when we lost one of the most influential people in our lives: it has always been our fear that this day will come. There are no words to describe the feelings I felt on the day we were informed of the news. October 13, 2017 was a typical Thursday At TCIS; we were holding our annual Spirit Week. It was the last day of our Spirit Week, and the news about the King’s health made us feel worried for him. The information about the King’s illness has spread throughout Thailand and to Thais throughout the world. On social media, Thais from everywhere were posting statuses to wish him well. “Long Live the King” posts had been posted on every medium of social media. Since the King had been ill for more than a decade, to be honest, I felt he will get better soon; as he used to say in one of his speeches, “I will live until I am 120 years old.” My friends and I went to the mall to hang out and celebrate the success of our spirit week performances. As we were walking and having dinner, unexpectedly, I ran into my Korean teacher. She came up to me and said, “did you know that King has passed away?” I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. I repeatedly denied it, and we were left dumbfounded at the mall. I couldn’t believe the news I heard. I checked every news website and every social media forum. There was nothing about the King. Even though the statement was not official, I suddenly felt the grief and the saddened atmosphere. As we were not sure what was happening, since statements from the officials were unclear, I didn’t know what to do. My mom called, informing me on the news: “the King has passed away, come home as soon as
03 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
possible.” I asked my mom where she received her news, as I knew her resources weren’t reliable. The rumors on the Line groups were getting chaotic, and I didn’t know who to believe. The DJ on the radio while I was on the car sounded melancholy. I came home to the regular TV program. Everyone’s eyes were on the TV. Suddenly, the TV turned into black and white, with writing on the screen saying “Statement from the Royal Household Bureau.” The moment we saw the words written in black and white, our eyes teared up. My grandfather’s heart broke, and tears dripped down his face. As the news anchor slowly and solemnly announced his name, we know right away that the day had come: the end of an era. Tears filled up; my mother wasn’t able to speak a word. It felt like the whole world stopped. The next morning became the hardest day of Thailand’s history. Signs stating “Long Live the King” were all taken down. His portraits turned into black and white. We were asked to refrain from any form of entertainment.. It was just plain sad. There are little words to describe these feelings. News publications from every part of the world had been writing on the news on his death. This October 13, 2017 will mark the anniversary of the death of King Bhumibol. It has been a hard year for us. The King’s dedication and work will always be in our hearts.

The Real Reason Behind 2017 Hurricanes By Yu-Lou Wei (Maggie)
The Formation of the 2017 Hurricanes The month of September in the news has been dominated by a single word: hurricane. The annual formation of cyclones in the Atlantic Basin has turned violent this year as a result of escalating global sea temperature, a 0.85℃ increase since 1880, and the absence of El Niño. The name of El Niño, a naturally occurring phenomenon that changes the globe’s circulation pattern, might seem familiar, as we have seen it largely publicized in 2015: a year that hosted one of the worst El Niños on
05 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
record. The infamous El Niño is known for causing more rains in the Americas, and is blamed for devastating flooding. However, the sum of the climate game usually accounts to zero. During an El Niño, the rain increase in the Americas causes the usually rainy South Asian countries to experience droughts. The El Niño also heavily influences hurricanes or cyclone patterns. The East Pacific Ocean experiences record breaking hurricanes while the West Atlantic and the Americas become rather quiet. This year, however, it is the exact opposite.
Brief Recap of the 2017 Hurricane Season The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season has now already seen seven hurricanes, including the Category 4 hurricanes Harvey and Irma, subsequently followed by Hurricane Katia and Hurricane Jose and Maria that could make landfall in the United States. Hurricane Irma is one of the strongest hurricanes ever to be recorded, and has knocked power from millions in Florida. Hurricane Harvey has caused an estimated $180 billion damage in Texas - more destructive than Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Maria has left the entire country of Puerto Rico without power and under danger. Scientists argue over the impact of global climate change on the hurricanes. Although it is still debatable whether or not global warming has caused the hurricane formations, most climate scientists agree that climate change has made the hurricanes more violent and devastating.

Honest Introduction to High School By Pornnapa huang (Coco)
Before high school, I have always been intimidated by my upperclassmen. Okay, maybe I still am, but that doesn’t change the fact that you’re going to be an example for middle school students. As much as I’d like to explain my tips in great detail, I know it’s going to bore a lot of people. I’ll make this short and sweet, just like me ;)
Don’t Rush • Choosing when you learn is completely up to you, but it is better to leave the subjects you don’t like at the end. • This can give you something to focus on in senior year.
• Focus on selecting electives that you’re interested in rather than choosing an elective just because it’s required. • This can help you select what to focus on in college when you’re about to apply.
• It's good to have plans for your future, but high school is a time where you can experiment on many different subjects. • Most of the time you can easily change your mind within 4 years of high school, which is why choosing electives you like is better than setting electives that relate to your possible major in college.
08 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
Find What You Like • Keep playing the games you like, reading the books you love, draw the things that interests you, etc.. • Either way, you still have time to do what you like during freshman/sophomore year, so use the time wisely.
• Grades are important, but what you like is more important. Otherwise you won’t be able to figure out what interests you by the time you apply for college. • You can work harder on your grades as time goes by, and colleges can see your improvement too.
• This can also help you find your passion, so you can be proud of what you do in the future.
Participate in Lots of Community Service and School Events • As you may or may not know, our school has a minimum requirement for your community service hours in order to graduate. • You can work harder on your grades as time goes by, and colleges can see your improvement too.
• Colleges also look into your participation in community service and what you contribute to your school. • Being part of a committee in your grade or joining a club/sports team can help demonstrate to colleges that you are involved in school activities. • Try to find any opportunity to increase your community service hours; it looks good on your personal essay for colleges to see.
09 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
• These activities can also teach you many lessons. • School events helps to improve your teamwork with different people. You might not interact with many people, but eventually school projects will force you to work with others, so it is better to get a hang of working in a group.
Have a Good Friend Group • Even though you’re shy or don’t talk to a lot of people in general, at least have some support during your hard times. • Your friends will really help you, especially when you’re stressed out or need help in a certain subject; studying together is really better than doing it alone.
• If you don’t have friends…… then it is time to make some. • Many activities and projects during high school are going to force you to work with other people, so making friends is still a better option than doing nothing at all.
• People can be fake, but don’t let that fact make you a bad person. • What I mean is: don’t let others intimidate you because they have huge egos. You should stand up for yourself and find better people to hang out with. Mind your own business basically.
Chill and Do Homework On Time • Literally, LITERALLY, all you have to do in freshman year is complete your assignments and pass your exams.
• If you’re panicking over an assignment or exam that seems hard, remember that no matter what, these hard times will be over eventually.
10 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
• Especially when you have to take a required class that you absolutely don’t care about………. I understand.
• Reminder: grades aren’t everything; the most important thing is you did your best and you are passing.

Urban Legends
By Ying-Hsin Lian (Eve)
1. The Cowl Statue A babysitter was called in to care for two children who were already asleep while their parents were out eating. After a while, she got bored, so she called the parents to ask if she could watch TV in the parents’ bedroom. The parents approved, and she had one more request: to cover the clown statue in the room since she is afraid of clowns. At the other end of the line, the parents went silent and said, “Grab the kids and get out of the house now. We do not have a clown statue.”
2. The Call From Inside the House Another story of a babysitter… Aren’t you glad? So the story goes like this… Once, a babysitter was sitting in the living room when the phone rang. When she picked it up, a creepy voice on the other end asked, “Have you checked on the children?” She was so creeped out
12 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
that when it happened again, she called the police. Later, the police were able to trace the call from the house itself. There was a serial killer in the house. When the babysitter went to check the children, she found them dead, and there was a bloody message written on the wall that said: “I TOLD YOU TO CHECK ON THE CHILDREN!”
3. The Vanishing Hitchhiker Once, a newlywed couple was driving down a road when they saw a female hitchhiker in a tattered white dress. They pulled over and asked if they could give her a ride. She gave them the address and thanked them. She got into the car and when they arrived at their destination, the wife said, “The hitchhiker’s gone!” The husband was also surprised. Then, they saw two elderly people on the front porch of the house they were directed to. The couple got down the car and asked the elders about the girl. Then, the elderly man told them that the girl was their daughter... who died in a hit and run accident years ago. He proceeded to say that her spirit might not rest until they find the person who did it. After that, the couple said their goodbyes and left.
13 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
4. The Green Ribbon Once upon a time, there was a girl who always wore a green ribbon around her neck. When she grew up, there was a guy who liked her. She liked him back, and soon after they became adults, they got married. One day, the husband asked why she always wore the green ribbon around her neck, and she always said she would tell him later. After years when they had both grown old, the woman was on her deathbed when she gave her husband permission to remove the green ribbon. When the ribbon was removed, her head rolled off.
5. The Missing Bride A woman got married, and the day went peacefully. When the day was about to end, someone suggested to play hide and seek. The bride was determined to win, so she slipped into the attic. The groom found everyone except the bride and was very heartbroken when they she didn’t appear after days of disappearance. They even went to the police to report a case of a missing woman. Years after, when the bride’s mother died, the bride’s father went up to the attic to search for his wife’s belongings. He came across a chest and opened it. He was shocked to see his daughter’s remains in the chest. Turns out, the bride got stuck in the
14 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
chest when the rusty part of the lock latched together, trapping her inside.
6. The Bell During the plague, lots of people were buried alive because they looked dead. As a result, people hung a bell in the road leading to the grave, so the “dead” could ring the bell if they were alive. A person would stay in the graveyard to listen for the bells. One day, he heard a bell ring and someone shouting, “Help, I’m not dead” from inside a grave. The person was confused and said, “But you’ve been in there for 2o years!”
7. The Hotel Room A man was staying at an old but renovated hotel during his business trip. He came across a room that didn’t have a card reader, which made him very curious. Eventually, his curiosity got the better of
15 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
him, so he bent down and looked through the keyhole. He saw a woman who had long, white hair standing in the corner, with her back to him. He went about his business, and when he came back to the hotel he peeked again. This time, something bright red was covering the keyhole. He felt embarrassed and thought maybe they saw him looking in earlier. The next day when he was about to check out, he asked the receptionist about the room. The receptionist said, “Oh, the last time someone stayed in that room, it was a bride who was waiting for her groom. Her groom never came, and the next day she passed away in that very room mysteriously. She was very hard to forget. She had long white hair and bright red eyes.” And last but not least, the classic…
8. Bloody Mary
If you say Bloody Mary 3 times in front of a mirror in the
bathroom with the lights off with a flashlight, she’ll appear in the mirror.

Creepy Pasta
By Ploynapas Petjiravut (Pear) She sat still on the wooden chair; her hands and feet tied, as the psychopathic man in front of her dangled his knife inches away from her face. Her throat felt dry as the scent of tape covering her mouth filled her nostrils. “Shhhh… Don’t cry… I’m here now,” he said seductively in his haunting voice. His breath fanning the side of her cheeks, making her squeeze her eyes shut in disgust. Smirking, he jerked his head back and walked towards the other chair on the opposite side of the room, his movement swaying ever so slightly. She watched him as he sat on the chair. His malicious eyes never leaving her’s. His eyes were screaming; there were so much hatred and anger stirring in them. She couldn’t believe how she never saw it before. She was indignant at the whole situation; the rage making her writhe her hands, hoping that it will release the tight rope. But to no avail, the rope sunk into her flesh, digging, as she felt a sharp sting against her wrist. “There, there, don’t worry, you’re not going anywhere anytime soon…” Her blood boils as she registered the tone of his voice; it was so pompous, as if nothing can touch him, as if she didn’t give
him
everything he had today. “I have a secret you know…,” he continues accusingly, “I was never the golden boy. I sat in my room and kept to myself, but out of all people you would know best— wouldn’t you? It was because of you after all.”
17 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
15 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
He pushed the chair to the side and stood up abruptly. The screeching noise of the chair sliding against the floor’s surface pierced through the air. He let out a caustic laugh; it echoed against the wall and through the room. She had never heard anything like it before. It was void of any emotion, the stark contrast of the whimsical ones she was familiar with. His laugh sent chills down her spine as tears were now rolling freely down her face. “Nobody ever listened, and I was never good enough…,” his voice was getting louder, “I just wanted to be good enough for them, for YOU,” and louder, “BUT I NEVER WAS,” he stared down at his knife, his voice lowering into a whisper as he kept repeating it over and over, “I never was… never was… never was…” He stopped for a second before a sly smile tugged against his lips. “And so, I came up with a more...pragmatic way to deal with people like you, who ruined everything for me.” He started to saunter towards her, “I figure I needed to make a statement, something big, something didactic.” She sobbed and thrashed. She did everything she could to get away from him, but she had no energy left. He placed the knife against her throat, and leaned in until his mouth was centimeters away from her ear— “How do you like me now, mother?”

There will be some emotional turmoil on the 18th and 19th, but is it yours? If so, own it. If not, help if you can, but draw boundaries. If you wish you could start something new, the 24th and 25th are great days to do that. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by or you will regret it later. There will be a lot of excitement on the 30th and 31st. Enjoy it but don’t forget to stay grounded! Leo: ROMANCE! That is something you would want to expect on the 1st and 2nd of October. Acts of love or kindness also count as communication too. A journey will do you good on the 20th and 21st, so go on one. It doesn’t have to be very long or very far, just a walk around the block would do. Don’t forget to call up some friends on the 31st; they’ll be so happy to hear from you!

Artist Of The Month
By Chia-wen Hsu (Gill) & Grace Natalee Tirabassi Interview Topic: Photography Interviewee: Napat Purimaporn (Lily) Interviewers: Gill and Grace
“Introduce yourself” Okay, so hi, my name is Lily. I’m sixteen years old right now, and I take photos as a hobby.
“Why do you like Photography?” Uhh… I like Photography because I love to see people with smiles on their faces, when they see themselves in high quality pictures that they never used to experience before. They get to gain more confidence within themselves when they see they look good in these photos. It creates a very good memory for their first experience of photography taken by a photographer.
“What’s your main purpose in photography?” My main purpose for this is to make people happy. The person who inspires me is Brandon Woelfel, a really great photographer. His work is so unique and beautiful that I could recognize his photos right
25 | THE HOWL | OCTOBER 2017
away. The thing that inspires me the most are his techniques, and his ways to give meaning to each picture.
“What do you chose to become a main focus of your artwork and why?” I choose my friends to be the main focus of my work because I do portraits. It easier for us to communicate to each other because we have known each other for so long, so it would be easier for them to understand what I want. Also, I want them to get a chance to look good in a high quality picture for their memories.
“Do you have some interesting stories?” When I can’t find a unique place for photos, my friends and I would go to to Siam, a well-known mall in Bangkok. My friends would bring me to new places that I have never been before. I think that a good place to take pictures is with neon light effects.
