Monthly Music: September Sounds Author: Pornnapa Huang (Coco) G.12

September is another month that 2018 has decided to bless us with a plethora of great releases. Namely, releases from returning artists with names that you recognize, and their new tunes never cease to amaze me. We don’t have pumpkin spice lattes or Halloween (haha), but we will always have music to feel the autumn vibes, even if it’s sunny outside. In this article, I’ll be covering and sharing my appreciation for new music from late August to mid September, so let’s get started!

Nina Cried Power - Hozier Release Type: EP Remember the guy who sang Take Me To Church? At least, I did. I remember losing my entire mind when he announced he was going to release an EP along with a tour. Sadly, there are no Asia dates, yet. Back to the EP, I’m glad that Hozier decides to bless us with his voice again. It’s no Take Me To Church, but the songs are still mesmerizing while being calm. Hozier’s poetic lyrics are also spot on, especially in Moment’s Silence (Common Tongue). The song’s lyrics have a pattern that just blows my mind considering

02 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

how descriptive it is. If there’s any kind of signal for the beginning of fall, this EP would be it.

Mariners Apartment Complex - Lana Del Rey Release Type: Single No instrument indicates the chilly autumn even more than the acoustic guitar, and you can bet that this song does include acoustic guitars. Mariners Apartment Complex is a song that is very laid back and lets you sit back and relax. The grunge elements, in addition to Lana’s voice, adds a dream-like composition to the song. Lana Del Rey sings about helping a loved one in a situation she’s been through before, and the nonchalant speaking parts adds a more personal tone to the theme as well. It’s great to hear her new music, and I can’t wait what Lana Del Rey has in store for us as well!

Bloom - Troye Sivan Release Type: Album Where do I even start? Troye Sivan the gay icon has returned, and he has more experiences to share. The soft, yet powerful Seventeen to the poetic Postcard to the upbeat My My My!, yet Troye still keeps his soft tone from his previous album The

03 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

Blue Neighborhood. I think it’s a great sophomore album because of how he manages to elevate his style. Troye’s not in his small town, but rather he’s in a vibrant city. There’s more pop and dance in Bloom in comparison to The Blue Neighborhood, but the album still takes breaks for mellow tunes as well. All in all, I can’t wait to see what Troye Sivan is going to evolve into as an artist while pioneering for gay musicians as well.

Sincerity Is Scary - The 1975 Release Type: Single Sometimes, you just need a quaint coffee shop song that perfectly matches your indie aesthetic. Sometimes, you think the 1975 is the best band ever. Most of the time, everyone loves a good song that just exposes their inner insecurities. After several singles leading to their soon-to-be released album, the 1975 pulls out another great single for us! How nice of them! The brass and beats help fit the song into a more coffee shop archetype, but it’s always a bonus when the song discusses putting up a facade to avoid being honest towards other people in this age. Although the song is cute, it certainly has a cynical vibe as well.

04 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

Electricity (ft. Diplo, Mark Ronson) - Dua Lipa, Silk City Release Type: Single The perfect track to close the summer. I’m not always the biggest fan of top 50 songs, but Dua Lipa definitely has music that always sounds good, emphasis on “sounds”. Besides, this is a huge collaboration! Mark Ronson and Diplo will always make music to bop your head to, and I don’t know whoever Silk City is. Just kidding, they’re a new artist who just started releasing music since 3 months ago, so it’s someone new to look out for. Something interesting I’d like to point out is the music video. It features Dua Lipa dancing around in a warehouse which is actually inspired by Janet Jackson’s The Pleasure Principle[1]. Janet Jackson is always an icon.

History Time Author: Chern-Tay Shih (Kevin) G.12

Start of World War II (September 1st, 1939) World War II was one of the most important historical events that shaped our modern society and nations, because of this a lot of countries were born and a lot of technologies were invented as well. The start of World War II began with the invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939. At that time, Hitler ordered to send an army of estimate 1.5 million infantries to attack the border of Poland and deployed the German Luftwaffe to bombard the Polish airfield. On September 3rd, British and France declared war on Germany, initiating the first step of World War II. You may ask why would Germany invade Poland? The short answer is Hitler wanted to use Poland to expand German territory. The Nazi's believed that Poland's land could be used as extra space for Germans and to grow food that would support Germany. Poland’s army’s resistance wasn’t effective against Germany at all, and the invasion of Poland only lasted for 6 weeks before Germany claimed victory.

Fun fact: There’s a misconception that the Polish army used their cavalry units to charge at the German tanks during 1939. This would have been both stupid and “brave” if it ever happened, but it it not entirely true. his myth started after the battle of Krojanty (On

06 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

September 1st, 1939). During the charge at Krojanty, Polish cavalry units purposely used the charge to disperse the German armies but didn’t realize there’d be tanks on the perimeter, so the Polish cavalries weren’t successful at the charge and had to retreat. Later, the Italian press assumed that the Polish cavalries bravely charged at the tanks, and the Germans used this opportunity as propaganda.

Another fun fact: During World War II, Polish cavalry units which made up 10 percent of its army would use the horses for mobility to get from one place to another.

The Great fire of London (September 2nd, 1666) The number “666” in 1666 has nothing to do with the cause of the Great Fire of London. The Great Fire of London started from King Charles II’s baker on Pudding Lane near the London Bridge. It soon spread out to Thames street, and the strong wind that day transformed the flame into a chaotic inferno. No pun intended, but Satan would like to say “it’s lit!” Why? The fire - party - went on for about 4 days before the fire settled. Many medieval houses made out of timber oak burned, and four-fifths of London was destroyed. Luckily, not a lot of people died.

Fun fact: There is a myth floating around that the Great Fire of London ended the bubonic plague that was killing many Europeans, but historians

07 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

now believe that the bubonic plague might have already decreased drastically before the Great Fire of London ever happened. This makes the idea of Great fire of London stopping bubonic plague unlikely.

Norman Invasion (September 28th, 1066) Norman is a translation for Northman in several Scandinavian languages, and the history is that these North men settled in a place called Normandy in France as a treaty from the French king Charles II. The Normans and their king, Rollo, settled in Normandy for several hundred years, and they adopted the language of French and their culture. In 1066, the Normans decided to invade England due to some rivalries between royals. The importance of the invasion is this invasion changed English history completely by bringing England closer to continental Europe and reducing the influences of the Scandinavians of North Germanic descent.

More Fun Facts: • The birth of modern English came from these Normans, and English became influenced by Latin romance languages that are French and Spanish. The Normans brought their language into England and add in more vocabulary into the “original English”. The language that was used in England before this is considered Old English. You would probably understand Old English if you understand German since it’s actually composed mostly of Scandinavian languages. How is Old English and German-

08 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

related? Old English and German are related because Old English was based on Germanic language. It was brought by Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. • Although I didn’t learn British Literature 12, Beowulf is actually considered one of the oldest pieces of English literature written in Old English. Later, it was transcribed into modern English in 1837. • The language of the court was French after the Norman Invasion, but the people spoke Middle English at that time. • it’s so easy to learn other Romance and Germanic languages if you understand and master the language of English. ;)

Mac Miller’s Death -

Author: Thidaporn Ratarsa (Kathy) G.11

Warning:

If you or someone you know is in need of help, please talk to someone you trust or the school’s counselors. On September 7, 2018, a famous rapper, Mac Miller, died due to drug overdose. Miller died in his house in LA while there were other people in his home. A male friend of Miller called 911 and said that he was in cardiac arrest. An insider told PEOPLE that his death was such a shock because he was watching football with his close friends the night before his death. According to The Blast, it is confirmed that the male caller was Miller’s assistant. Miller’s assistant found him unresponsive in bed, just hours after having a normal conversation with him. According to a source from PEOPLE Magazine, when the police arrived at his home, they found that he couldn't be revived, and the paramedics didn’t send him to the hospital. TMZ then reported that Miller was dead for hours before he was found in bed. An autopsy has been completed, and further tests will be run which would take about six to eight weeks.

10 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

The cause of his death has yet to be determined. Just hours before his death, Miller was found active on Instagram and was sharing clips of his newest album, Swimming, on his story. Miller had suffered from drug abuse for years. He did not deny it, he knew it would have a dark ending. Miller knew that using drugs and being addicted to it would eventually result in him making bad decision and long-term mental problems. He would often write about his daily use of drugs, mental health, and wanting to be sober. The rapper’s career was booming in 2011 when he released his debut album Blue Slide Park. Miller began to rely on marijuana to cope with stress while he was touring. Soon, Miller turned to promethazine, codeine, and cocaine. According to PEOPLE, in one of his interviews before his death, Miller denied that he was a drug addict to TMZ. In the interview he said, “If a bunch of people think I am a huge drug addict, OK. Cool. What can I really do?” He then said, “ “Go talk to all those people and be like ‘Naw man, it’s really not that simple? Have I done drugs? Yeah. But am I a drug addict? No.” He then said that it was his mistakes and that one specific event, when he was driving under influence and crashed his SUV into a power pole, made everyone think that he was back to doing drugs. He said he’d rather just continue his life and see where it goes. One week after Miller’s death, Ariana Grande posted a video on her Instagram of Miller telling a story. The video was when Ariana was still with Miller. She was very heartbroken

11 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

when she heard that Miller had passed away. In her caption, she said that “I’m so sorry I couldn’t take your pain away.” She stated in her caption that they had talked about Miller being addicted to drugs. Ariana tried to fix him but was unable to help him with his addiction. Many artists also reacted to this news via Twitter. Some of the rappers include Wiz Khalifa, Chance The Rapper, Jaden Smith, Snoop Dogg, Machine Gun Kelly, and many other A-list rappers and artists.

Campfire Scary Stories Author: Sao-Long Yu (Saolong) G.10

Hello there and welcome to my campfire. Sit there for a minute and listen to the stories that I am gonna tell you. Stories that will make children cry. Stories that will chill you to the bones and stories that will keep you awake at night. Or stories that might not scare you at all because I have never told a good story before.

1. Aren’t you glad you did not turn on the lights? Once upon a time there were two best friends living in the same dorm room. Riley and Nicole were best friends. They were together all the way from middle school. When they got into college, they started becoming the opposite of one another but still friends. Riley would be studying in her room the whole time while Nicole was out partying. After Riley study, she would go to sleep but Nicole would return and flip the lights on. Riley was annoyed by this but she didn’t complain. Before the midterms, Riley wanted to study hard that night. Before Nicole leave to go partying again, Riley asked Nicole not to turn on the lights when she gets back. Riley said that she has a midterm tomorrow, so it would be nice if Nichole doesn’t interrupt her sleep. A few hours had passed when Nicole returned to a dark room with no lights. As expected, she found Riley sleeping on her bed. One thing

15 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

that was different was that she realized Riley was squirming a lot more than usual. But as a good friend, she accepted Riley’s request and did not turn on the lights. Nicole went straight to sleep that night to wake up the next day. She found out that Riley was still in bed, but facing down. She wasn’t moving so Nicole tried shaking her to wake her up for the midterm. After Nicole rolled Riley over, Nicole screamed. Riley lied dead still on the bed. Written with Riley’s blood was the message “Aren’t you glad you did not turn on the lights?”

2. A knife on the grave Daisy was hosting her 11th birthday at her house. Her friends and classmates joined her. During the party, Daisy and her classmates started telling scary stories and urban legends. Daisy’s house was next to the cemetery so her classmates started telling cemetery stories to scare the others. “They say, if you stab a knife onto the grave and sit on the tombstone. At the stroke of midnight, the owner of the grave will rise and drag you down to hell.” Daisy, as if to show off, told her friend that the story was nonsense and wasn’t a bit scary. Being challenged, the classmate challenged back: “If you were that fearless, why don’t you try and test the urban legend. If you manage to stay before midnight, I will accept your bluff and consider that my stories are not scary enough.” Challenged, Daisy grabbed a knife from the kitchen and headed out for the cemetery. She got to one

16 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

grave and stabbed a knife right in the middle of the grave. She then proceeded to climbed on top of the tombstone. The wind was chilly and the cemetary was dead quiet. A couple of minutes passed and it finally reached midnight. She leapt from the tombstone and proceeded to leave the gravesite. While leaving, something grabbed the end of her skirt, pulling her back. She led out a shriek of terror which cannot be heard in the dead silence of the night. A few more minutes passed, her friends decided to go check on her. They reached the sight to find her body lying dead on top of the grave. They found the kitchen knife had pinned her dress right onto the grave. Daisy had died of shock.

3. Prom Night Jacob was driving back to his house from his friends house. While on his way, it began to rain. He suddenly came across a blurry figure standing in the rain. It was a girl in a white dress walking down the lane. Jacob stopped right next to the girl and asked her if she wanted a ride. While driving, he saw that the girl was shivering. As any gentlemen would, he put his jacket over her shoulders. After a few miles, the girl indicated that she needed to get out at an old house. When they reached the house, the girl left the car. Jacob lowered the window to ask for the jacket back, but instead the girl was missing. He went up to the house and knocked on the door. An older woman answered the door. Jacob told her that he came to take back his jacket from the

17 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

girl in the white dress. The older woman starts crying, claiming that her daughter died ten years prior due to a car accident and is buried up the road. The spot where Jacob picked her up. The next day, he went to the graveyard to find the tombstone of that girl to confirm the story. There, on top of the young girl’s grave, was his jacket. We got a ghost story, a killer story and a realistic one. What’s missing now is a monster story. I got a interesting one to tell, the story of one of my all time favorite monster, the Wendigo.

4. A voice from the trees. When Xen was six years old, she spent most of her days in Colorado. Everyday, she would leave her house to go running around in the wild with her two dogs. One day, while running in the wild, she found herself going a bit too far. She realized she couldn’t see her house anymore. She went to a large clearing with lot of weird sticks on the ground. She looked up to see a storm forming. She went in the direction she thought was her home. Then suddenly, she heard a rustling from the trees. Her dogs was growling at the thing between the trees. Her dogs started barking when the thing snapped a twig. Then she heard her mother’s voice calling out for her. She felt that the voice was off. She realized it wasn’t her mother and began to run away. Her dogs were barking the whole time. She heard the voice

18 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

follow her and ran as fast as she could. She finally reached her house and told her mother all about her experience. She assured her that it was probably the wind. Years later, Xen decided to ask her mother about the experience. Her mother, this time, told her about the land. She said that the house was on Native American land. She had hired a spiritual doctor to cleanse the land and asked him about Xen’s experience. He told her that Xen was very lucky to survive because she survived a wendigo. A wendigo is a demonic spirit that possesses starving people who perform the taboo of cannibalism. The wendigo is cunning and vicious. They are expert hunters with insatiable hunger and supernatural speed. They can mimic human voices to trick people to walk to them. Xen is very lucky to survive such a vicious monster. (Story from Sapphire, told by Snarled)

And that is it folks, were you afraid, were you scared, probably not. It was fun telling all these stories though. Three of them were classic campfire scary stories while the fourth one was a story told by a scary story Youtuber. Happy Halloween! :)

Hallowmeme: The Origins of the word "Spoopy" Author: Nongnapat Chanthavornkij (Annie) G.11

Hmmm, have you ever heard of the word “spoopy?” If you’re into memes, I’m pretty sure you already have! For those who don’t, spoopy is internet slang for something that is spooky and funny at the same time.

Now, how did the word “spooky” became “spoopy?” Well, it all started some time ago on October 15th, 2009. The beginning of this word was from a typo in Halloween signs sold in Ross Dress For Less. The sign was suppose to say “spooky” but instead, it said “spoopy.” Mike Wooldridge, a Flickr user (Flickr is a social media site), saw it and decided to take a picture of the hilarious sign. He then posted the picture on to the site, it ended up unnoticed. But not until two years later, when a tumblr user happened to also find the same sign. They both did the same exact thing! The user took a picture of the sign and uploaded it to the internet. Little did they

27 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

know, the picture was shared over and over again, to the point where

the spoopy sign became a sensation that went viral.

The original picture During October, Google searches for the word “spoopy” often spike up. It’s probably because of people trying to find out what the word means, or just they may be simply searching for spoopy memes and puns (you should try, its quite funny).

28 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

All things considered, the word “spoopy” came from a typo that later became viral. Due to people’s creativeness, this word then became a meme. At this moment, you now know what “spoopy” means and where it came from, why don’t you give it a try and use this word for Halloween? Maybe add this to your daily use of words! OHHH SPOOPYYY~~~

10 Spooky Places in Korea Author: Thitakhwanporn Jiarapan (Khwan) G.11

1. 곤지암 Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital

This place is an abandoned psychiatric hospital since the late 1990s in Gyeonggi-do. Many strange things started to happen in the hospital until it was abandoned. All the equipment that was left is from years ago which makes the place even more creepier. Many strange things started to happen in the hospital until it was abandoned. Meanwhile, the head of the hospital fled to the United States. The rumour was spread out when multiple patients’ deaths could not be explained.

2. 제주도 Jeju Island This is a paradise island for many tourists, but who knew that this island has its dark scary side too? Around the 1940s, when the Korea government sent troops to stop the communist movement, nearly 10% of the

30 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

population were killed. Many people who live in Jeju Island always see ghosts walking around the area where the attack took place. Now, do you still want to hang around the island at night?

3. 용마랜드 Yongma Land

An amusement park in the northern part of Seoul is a famous place where many Kpop groups, such as Twice’s TT and Crayon Pop’s Bar Bar Bar, shot their music videos. It is also a cute little place for visitors to take photos. However, in 2011, this park was shut down mysteriously. Rumours say it was because of a little girl’s death on a poorly constructed ride and used the financial issue as a mask.

4. 영덕 흉가 Yeongdeok House It is known for people who live around the Yeongdeok House area not to bother with this place. The first reason is that the house itself was built over Korean War soldiers’ graves. People often hear

31 | THE HOWL | October 2018—Early Edition

screams of young men calling out for help from the house. Secondly, whoever owns this house will die mysteriously. Many people will challenge themselves and go to this place. Well, they find nothing wrong with the house until they go back home and check the videos recorded in the haunted house. Especially when they hear voices on tape, but they didn’t hear while they were in the house.

5. 늘봄가든 Neulbom Garden Restaurant A normal restaurant with a normal situation, how is this place haunted? Well, there’s no one working in there anymore! The story begins with the original owners of the restaurant who had committed suicide after their daughters died in a tragic accident. A few years later, the restaurant was sold to a new owner, yet many strange things happened. Sometimes, the plates fall by themselves and doors slam without anybody touching them. The second owner went crazy, and the restaurant was shut down. However, the

neighbours have heard those sounds of washing dishes and doors slamming until recently.

6. 독립문 Independence Gate In the ancient times, having long hair was a big thing, and cutting other people’s hair was considered an insult. This Independence Gate statue was built after the Sino-Japanese War to symbolize Korea’s independence. Unexpectedly, there have been reports of sighting spirits around the statue waiting to cut any Koreans’ hair when they walk under the statue. Currently, people don’t need to worry about their long hair anymore, but it still has a bad reputation.

7. 서울시립대학교 University of Seoul A university? Really!? Many students in the University of Seoul have reported seeing some violent spirits inside their dorms. Some people even see spooky students walking down the hallway.

There are also unexplained sounds inside their dorms. If anyone wants to experience this, check out the university.

8. 광성보 Gwangseongbo Fortress The Gwangseongbo Fortress was built in 1656 and is known for its spiritual activities. However, the actual story begins in 1871, when American forces attacked Korea, forcing it to open the ports. Back then, Koreans did not have guns while the Americans did, so many Korean forces were killed. This monument and grave is to appreciate what they did in the old days. The spooky part is that many visitors reported that they see some strange orbs in the photos taken at the fortress. Those orbs are sometimes called ghost bubbles.

9. 연평도 Yeonpyeong Island Where is the border of North and South Korea? The answer is Yeonpyeong Island! This island is a target from numerous attacks in the past as it is in-between the two countries. In the 1950s, the last attack from the North side had left this island completely abandoned. There are bullet holes in the walls left as proof. Even though there aren’t any sightings of spirits, this is called a ghost town because it’s not only holding the spookiness, but also the history.

10. 용인부락 Yongin Village This village is located in Gyeonggi-do. The ghosts here are different from other places because there are single woman spirits. These single woman spirits wander at night time around the whole village. They will appear in a white long dress and long black hair as you all might have seen in a movie. Warning, do not hang around at night time!
