History and Origin of Halloween Ittipat Diloksampan (You) G. 11

Origin of Halloween

Halloween came from the Celts—an ethnic group who lived

2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France. Celts celebrated their new year on November 1st of each year. It is the day that is the end of summer and the harvest season. After that day, it is the beginning of the dark and cold winter. They believed that that day was the beginning of the darkness since the boundary between the human world and dead people was blurred. They also believed that the night of October 31st was the day that dead people, ghosts, and souls will return to the Earth. Therefore, they must celebrate the return of the spirits and also pray for luck in the next long dark winter. Originally, it was a day to celebrate the hard work of everyone and wish everyone luck for the next year.

Halloween in America

When Halloween was introduced to America, it became a

very famous festival. People started to celebrate, have fun parties, share the stories of the dead, tell each other’s fortune, play, dance, and sing. It became one of the most enjoyable events. This

02 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

festival was founded at the beginning of the 19th century in the Southern colonies and Maryland—not so much in the Middle and Northern colonies. However, in the second half of the 19th century, people started to immigrate from Ireland and England and spread out this festival which made it become popular in America.

Trick-or-Treat

T h e t r i c k - o r - t r e a t

tradition started in the Middle Ages in Ireland and England. Actually, “Trick-or-Treating” is the ancient practice of “souling" and “guising." “Souling" is when people go door to door asking for food. Rich people will help poor people by giving them food. Basically, “Souling” is to help other people and care for each other. “Guising” is when they dress up as ghosts to prevent the ghosts from harming us on that day. Since that day was thought to be the day that spirits, evilness, and ghosts are released, they all dressed up to be the same as those spirits, so the spirits cannot harm them.

After that people migrated to America and spread this

tradition out, the trick-or-treating tradition started to become popular in the late 1950s. Children of all ages dressed up in costumes and pretended that they were ghosts. Then, they would run from house to house and ask the house owners for candy by saying “Trick-or-Treat”.

03 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

This tradition is still popular today. A survey recorded in 2015

stated that 75 percent of U.S. adults give out candy every year to trick-or-treaters. It also recorded that 64 percent of American kids from all ages go trick-or-treating or participate during Halloween. As recently as 2015, Halloween candy, costumes, and related products bring in almost $7 billion in revenue.

Serial Killers Ying-Hsin Lian (Eve) G. 10 Who’s up for a list of the scariest serial killers to send chills down your spine? ME! >:) Let’s start with the most famous and timeless one of them all…

1. Jack the Ripper

In the late 19th century, an anonymous person terrified and

scared the daylights out of every citizen in London. Known as Jack the Ripper, he stalked the streets and used the shadows as his protection from justice. He murdered female prostitutes and slit their throats and often took their internal organs. He was never identified or found even till this day.

2. Elizabeth Bathory

There were many stories that inspired the fiction novel

Dracula, and Elizabeth’s story was one of the many. She was a countess that was said to have tortured and murdered several of her maids as well as drinking their blood. She was known as “The Blood Countess” for this reason. Rumors say it all started when she slapped one of her servants so hard that the servant bled and the blood got on her skin which made it “glow”. From then on, she started imprisoning young virgin girls and bathing in their blood. Later, the Hungarian authorities started suspecting her and went to her estate to investigate. It was then that they found the bodies of dead and imprisoned girls. In total, the death count added up to about 650 girls. She was brutal and I often think that she was insane. 05 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

3. Vlad the Impaler

This other person also inspired the story of Dracula. He was

even more terrifying than Elizabeth Bathory and Dracula himself. Vlad was the prince of Wallachia and was your average person at first. Then, after his father and eldest brother was brutally tortured and murdered, he decided that he had to be a ruthless tyrant. He invited the people who went against him to a banquet and then proceeded to stab them with sharp spikes with their bodies still twitching. During his reign, he killed almost 80,000 people and 20,000 of them were impaled. According to legend, he also dined among a “forest of impaled bodies” to make sure everyone saw and feared him. He was ruthless and I don’t think there would be a second person in history who would be like him.

4. John Wayne Gacy

Ever wonder why you’re afraid of clowns? Well, first,

there’s the movie/novel It, and then there’s this serial killer, John Wayne Gacy, who was known as “The Killer Clown.” He was first arrested for assaulting two teenage boys but was released after he behaved in jail. After he was released, he then worked as a clown at children’s parties. However, during the next 6 years, he kidnapped, violated, tortured, and murdered a total of 33 boys. He was later sentenced to death

5. Giggling Granny

Nannie Doss was known as the giggling granny because

she was giggling when she confessed her crimes to the police. She poisoned her entire family and didn’t have any reason behind her cruel act. She got caught when she poisoned her FIFTH 06 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

husband and a total of 11 members of her family. When a reporter asked her for a statement, she said that she didn’t regret what she did at all, while smiling through it.

6. Ted Bundy

He looked normal on the outside, but he was far from that

on the inside. Bundy kidnapped and murdered at least 30 woman in the course of just 4 years. He was clever and would often use tricks to lure people into his trap before brutally murdering them and even torturing them. One weird thing he did was to keep heads of his victims sometimes. That’s all, and I hope I didn’t scare the bejeezus out of you ;) It’s almost halloween, after all.

The Headless Horseman Chern-Tay Shih (Kevin) G. 12

The Headless Horseman:

There are several folklores regarding the Headless

Horseman. However, there are two common depictions of the Headless Horseman: the Irish folklore and the American folklore. I will be mainly focusing on these two variations of the Headless Horseman in this article.

Celtic Mythology of Headless Horseman:

In Irish folklore the Headless Horseman is referred to as

Dullahan or the Dark Man. Dullahan is a kind of demonic fey or demonic fairy, and Dullahan in Irish folklore is often depicted as one riding a horse and carrying the head of its victim. It wields a whip that is actually the spinal cord from its previous victim. Dullahan always rides its horse. When it stops, it calls out the name of the victim it sees and points at them. The victim will then die immediately. Based on my knowledge, another two variations of Dullahan include one who drives a black carriage and another one who also drives a black carriage but will be scared away if the victim throws any ‘precious metal’ on the ground.

Fun fact: • Dullahan appears after sunset, but it will always appear near the town or village riding its horse. If people dare to look at it, they will be blinded immediately. The blindness is caused by a whip from its spinal weapon or a bowl of fresh human blood onto the victim’s face. 08 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

• Dullahan can only speak once in its journey, that is to say, the name of its victim.

American Folklore of Headless Horseman:

The myth of the Headless Horseman in America started

during the revolutionary war. It was actually from the book called “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” published in 1820 and was written by Washington Irving. The legend that started in Sleepy Hollow, New York, during the American revolutionary war was that this Headless Horseman is trying to find its lost head. It rides every night searching for his head, and in the story, Irving introduces a character named Ichabod Crane—a teacher in the Sleepy Hollow—who hears a story about the Horseman. One night, Ichabod encounters the Horseman, but unlike the Irish Horseman, this Headless Horseman does not call out the victim’s name. Instead, this version of Headless Horseman throws a pumpkin at Ichabod and chases after him. Ichabod’s whereabouts after the chase of the Headless Horseman remains a mystery in the story.

Fun fact: • If you happen to see the Headless Horseman holding a pumpkin on the internet or in media. That depiction is actually based on the book called “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”.

Why Headless? Irish Folklore:

Celts believed that the soul is within the head, and if the foe

was a worthy one, their head will be taken to add into the 09 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

warrior’s prestige. Another belief is that the head will scream when an enemy is near if they stick the head onto a pole, a spear, or a pole-arm. The Headless Horseman’s motivation is just about vengeance and redemption.

American Folklore:

The legend has it that a Hessian artilleryman who was killed

during the Battle of White Plains in 1776, had his head decapitated by an American cannonball. His head still remains on the battlefield shattered, and his ‘brothers’ carried his body away from the battlefield. His body was buried in a Sleepy Hollow Church.

Mental Health Tanakrit Changcharoenkij (Kris) G. 10

Since my articles for the whole year will be regarding

psychology and philosophy, it is only fitting that I start the year off with the mention of World Mental Health Day. Coincidentally, World Mental Health Day is on the same day as Taiwan’s 10/10 day. Thus, I will be writing about why it is important that we remind ourselves about the significance of mental health and how to take care of it.

Significance

Often times, people don’t prioritize mental health the way

they do physical health, and it leads to unhealthy minds. The problem is compounded by the fact that the media and entertainment often exaggerate or glorify mental disorders. This is seen in the movie Psycho, where psychopathy is portrayed as an urge to go on a killing spree, but in actuality it just means that you can’t feel empathy with others. Because of this, most people with disorders don’t realize it themselves as they think that their symptoms are negligible.

Maintaining a Healthy Mind

Although the 3 methods below will not be able to deal with mental disorders the way therapists can, it is still important that we’re aware:

1. Being Healthy A healthy body helps your mind stay sharp and well. This can be done through getting plenty of exercise, sleeping well, and having a good diet.
 12 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

2. Mental Exercises

Mental exercises are crucial because the mind usually

takes a lot longer to relax than the body., which is why you should try something new once in a while—such as changing the genre of what you usually read or trying out some logic puzzles.

3. Social Life

Many people know that humans in nature are social

creatures, yet they choose to stay isolated. In order to have a good social life, you don’t need to have many friends All that matters is the connection between you and your friends. This is most important as you will be able to care for them, confide in them, and get help from them.

13 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

Time Management Grace Tirabassi G.11

Time management. Your mom says it—your teachers talk

about it—your counselors mention it… but you never figure out what is it. You probably assume it’s a something you should do; in that case, you are correct! But other than that, what is it really? The simple answer is this: time management is the act of assigning specific times for specific tasks, such as homework, studying, playing video games, or going out with your friends. The point of time management is that you are able to prioritise your daily activities in such a way that you accomplish important tasks and still have time to sit back, relax, and have fun.

Of course, time management can be difficult for some

people. First of all, it’s very easy to procrastinate as a way of avoiding your work. It also gets tricky when you are suddenly bombarded with school work at once and you feel that staying up till 2am is inevitable. Furthermore, you may feel overwhelmed when you have so much to do that you end up demotivated altogether. In this article, I would like to show that time management isn’t impossible and how to properly do so.

Get A Schedule

Get yourself a notebook, a checklist, a calendar, or just go digital —as long as you can write down what you have to do each day. Inside the schedule you list all the stuff you’re doing outside of work or school such as projects, a movie date, or even a phone

14 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

Inside the schedule you list all the stuff you’re doing outside of work or school such as projects, a movie date, or even a phone call. This is to give yourself a visualization of what you want or need to accomplish that day. If you only have that information inside your head, you may not see the overall amount you actually need to get done, or easily miss important tasks and events.

Prioritize Your Work

Binge watching Netflix is

definitely less important than finishing your five-paragraph essay. You need to differentiate between what you must do, what you should do, and what you can do. Inside your schedule, you should label the activities according to how important or urgent they are. With this method, you will be able to finish important tasks first while using the rest of your time to do other things.

When labeling your tasks, get creative! Use a key, symbols,

pictures, colors, or highlighting to classify the type of work and how important it is. It’s a good way to, again, visually see your workload as well as having fun doing your schedule.

15 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

Over-plan Yourself

This point might seem a bit

shocking, but what I really mean is over0plan yourself in a schedule. Write down the maximum amount o f t a s k s y o u t h i n k y o u c a n accomplish each day. The point of this is to get yourself to finish less important tasks after you’re done with the important ones. By doing so, you’ll finish other work ahead of time and earn yourself future free time!

It’s important to note, though, that when I say “over-

planning yourself,” I don’t mean scheduling a bunch of important tasks all in one day. Urgent tasks should be spread out equally. By over-planning, I mean adding a bunch of little things like reading a new book, or starting your homework ahead of time. They’re essentially the side-quests of your life that will not be affected by not doing them that day.

Fun > Work

Most people spend eight hours a day at school or work

already. It can sometimes feel tiring to come back home after a hard working day only to have to put up with even more work. Because of this, it is very important to give importance to having fun. You should always prioritize some enjoyable activities that are not necessarily productive over your work. Playing sports, going to the gym, calling a friend, or just chilling and listening to music is something you should always give time to! Doing such activities will make you happier, and therefore, more energized to battle with your responsibilities! 16 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

Of course, having fun does not equal procrastinating. You

should not be giving yourself a treat if you’re purposely doing so to avoid your work. If you do so, you will only end up with more to do than you’ll ever want. Because of this, always have a time set for having fun. Give yourself an hour or two of happiness to spring back into action in the area of responsibility!

Guildmates Doing What They Are Best At Nantawat Wang (Justin) G. 11

Chapter 1: Arrival

When it came to the Great City of Firehearth, Alanza

expected a lively city where merchants spew across the town square as festive music flowed across the crowds of visitors like the alluring tunes of nightingales.

But her expectations were crushed as she entered the city

for the first time in her life; there were neither merchants that spewed across the square, nor festive music that resembled the alluring tunes of nightingales. The city was also not as grand; In fact, it was opposite of what she had expected.

Heaps of trash soaked by the heavy rain released a putrid

smell so strong she had to pinch her nose to prevent herself from fainting. Homeless bums huddled together under the roofed buildings to avoid the rain. Many eyed her as she shuffled closer to Reynard and held onto his robe tightly. He glanced at Alanza briefly, but continued to pace through the alley without saying anything.

“If I remember correctly… weren’t you the one who

demanded me to bring you along to the city? What’s the matter now? Too scared?” Reynard teased as he picked up the pace. Alanza followed behind closely, but because of his towering height, she had to jog every once in a while to catch up with him.

“I’m not scared! Just a little surprised. After all, that old fart

20 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

Durward kept describing the city as if it was the most wonderful place on the entire continent.”

“And what’s wrong with that?”

“He must’ve gone senile after locking himself underground

for too long from playing chess alone and talking to himself, because this is nothing close to what he had said.”

“It’s not too late to turn back yet. Say the magic word and

I’ll accompany you all the way back.”

“No way! I gave up everything just to be here! And another

long trip like that will surely bore me to death.”

“Then stop grabbing my robe You’re going to pull it off.”

“…”

“Whatever.”

Under heavy rain, the two strolled through the street until

they came across the only lit building: Gregory’s Brewery. “We’re here,” Reynard announced. The sound of drunk men singing along to the crude music echoed across the street, sending waves of chills down her spine. To her, the music sounds more like a butcher house rather than a hearty singalong.

Without hesitation, he pushed through the front door with

such force, the rowdy atmosphere died down almost immediately. With Reynard leading the charge, they headed toward the counter. Dozens of men, both drunk and filled to the brim with food, stared at them as if they were some sort of unwanted pests.

“Hey—hey. Wait a second here!” Blocking their path with his

leg, a man held up his bottle and pointed it at them. “Can’t you 21 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

see the bar is reserved?”

Reynard ignored the man and crossed over his leg. Alanza

follow behind him closely, while stepping on the man’s leg.

“A room for one night.” He said to the bartender, who was

busy polishing the silverware.

“That will be 5 gold. Anything else you need?”

“Tell your men to keep it down for a bit.” Reynard replied,

dropping 20 gold coins onto the counter, which was quickly scraped away by the bartender. As he turned around to left the counter, Reynard found himself surrounded by four men, each armed with a broadsword and murderous grins. One of them, who seemed to be the leader, casually approached him with a bottle clenched in his hand.

“There’s no need to hurry there lad. I just want to discuss a

small issue I had with your girlfriend back there. You know we can settle this in a civil manner—isn’t that right Gerg?”

“Don’t start a fight now, Hans. I don’t want to clean up

after your mess again.” Greg sighed as he slid another bottle across the table.

“I don’t usually offer a second chance to anyone” Hans

drunkenly offered the bottle to Reynard, “but you’re lucky that I’m currently in a generous mood. Pack your stuff and leave, before I throw you and that brat of yours out personally. After all, I’m quite a generous man.”

“How about you take that damn bottle away from my face.

I ain’t have time for your business.” Raynard said as he left the counter, but quickly found himself cornered by Hans’ accomplices. Behind him, Hans slowly rose from his seat. His 22 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

face burned bright red with rage, or due to all the booze he had drunk.

“You punk! JUST WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?”

Thrown into a drunken rage, Hans lifted up his bottle like a sword, “I’M HANS, LEADER OF THE FIFTH STRONGEST GUILD IN THIS CITY! HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECT ME!” and swung it towards Reynard’s head with all his might. CRASH

Hans let out a hideous grin, but it quickly faded as he

noticed that Raynard was completely unharmed. Instead, Alanza was standing in front of him holding her right hand up. Streams of blood slid down from the wounds where glass shards had torn into her flesh. Her amber blonde hair fluttered in the air as her hood slid off.

Hans immediately drew his sword, hands shaking as he

slowly took a step back. Ignoring the bleeding wounds, she slowly reached for her sheath, bending down like a tiger ready to pounce on its prey.

Seeing his stance begin to waver, Alanza hurled herself

forward. Hans tried to fend her off, but his attack was easily deflected as his blade was knocked clean-off by her sheer force. With great fear, he tried to force his way out of the counter, but a sharp pain in his ankle caused him to fall on all fours. He turned around in terror as a flash of silver struck towards his screeching mouth…

“That’s enough, Alanza.”

23 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

The blade came to a halting stop, resting on Han’s trembling

forehead as droplets of blood ran down its sharp edge. He stared cross-eyed at the blade in surprise and was out cold before collapsing onto the hard floor. The entire bar went silent, except for Greg, who was busy rummaging through the drawer.

“Here’s your key. Breakfast is served at nine.” Greg tossed

the key to Reynard, “Your friend there needs some gauze?”

“We’ll be fine. Let’s go.”

After kicking Han’s unconscious body a couple times,

Alanza quickly followed him towards the stairs, but not before tripping over a bottle on the floor and landing face-first into a bowl of mashed potatoes on the nearby table. Burning with embarrassment, she wiped the food off her face and quickly followed Reynard up the stairs.

“What are you looking at, damn drunks? Didn’t you hear the

man? If I get any complains from him, I’ll make sure you won’t be stepping in here ever again!”

“Well, that’s what you get for trying to show off.”

“Shut up, if it was fo- OW! Take it easy!” Alanza winced as

Reynard pulled out another glass shard with a tweezer, her palm flowed with blood as more shards were removed. Some of them came out easily, but a few had to be twisted in order to get loose. By the time he finished with the operation, a puddle of blood had already gathered onto the floorboard, staining the brand new sheet provided.

24 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

“There—all patched up. It should take you a few days to

heal.”

“But how am I supposed to help you complete a quest if I

can’t use my right hand?” Alanza complained as she stared at her bandaged hands. “Can’t you spare any healing magic or potions?”

“Stick with your other hand. Durward told me you’ve

mastered beginner’s swordsmanship with your left hand.” Reynard wiped all the blood off his equipment and sorted them into his leather pouch. “And we can only start with simple quests for now, so no need to get fired up over it.”

Ignoring his words, Alanza dropped her leather knapsack

and occupied the right side of the queen sized mattress. After traveling for a month with little to no rest, a good long break was what she needed. After a while, Reynard picked up his bag as he blew out the candle on his table and headed towards the door.

“Where are you going?” Alanza asked

“I’m going to have a talk with Greg for a bit. Go to sleep.”

“Reynard?”

“Yes?”

“Give me a good night’s kiss.”

Reynard sighed as he walked up to Alanza. He gave her a

kiss on the forehead. “Have a good one.”

“Goodnight.”

So What is K-Pop? Pawaret Techasukij (Max) G. 11

Also known as the Hallyu wave, K-pop has been

widespread across the world—garnering views at an immense rate with their attractive looks, addictive, infectious melodies, and alluring choreography—all of which garners more and more people to look into the genre and its glorious idols. K-pop has been a global phenomenon, booming all over the world with dance covers, fan-chants, and the fans’ hearts.

But what is K-pop? Why is it so different, and why is it so

popular? How did Korean culture get so popular into most countries, especially in the Asian region and even some of the Western countries?

K - p o p

i s

p r o m o t e d v e r y d i f f e r e n t l y a s opposed to western culture. One of the key differences is a u d i t i o n i n g ; i n Western culture, all you really need is a demo and an interview to join a record label. Meanwhile, in K-pop, auditions are vital for entering an entertainment company or an agency. When you enter, you don’t get to record your first album or single right away; you have to train for years—depending on your abilities—for a chance to debut in the K-pop scene. For the most part, these people debut in groups, not as solo artists, as opposed to the Western culture. 26 | THE HOWL | October 2018 - Mid-Month Edition

So when K-pop groups

or soloists debut, they all do a debut showcase, which will feature the idols to perform as an introduction to the industry. Groups will usually be assigned concepts ranging from cute, girl-crush, dark, sad, etc., but usually these concepts will be very visually appealing and interesting. The genre likes to be very creative about their videography and aesthetic, clinging well to the concept and exceeding expectations every time.

Although their system works differently than what we’re

used to, we would have to thank the choreographers and producers for making the music, too. Infectious melodies stick to our heads, as well as a few English words you can repeat embedded into your mind. The dances, too, are very addicting and fun to do. They range from the  fluid and complex or they might be a series of cute poses and moves that appeal to the public. Many of these have gone viral!

In conclusion, K-pop

is a genre made for everyone to enjoy. If you kick down the language barriers, open up your preferences of genres you listen to, and accept the idea of idolizing k-pop idols, then you might really grasp the concept and enjoy it yourself!

Mr. James Hale — Club Advisor and Editor

Grace Tirabassi — Supervisor, Editor-in-Chief, and Art Director Hey, there—it’s Grace. This is my third year in high-school and The Howl. I have experienced a lot in this journey from my ups and downs. Because of this, I would like to share what I learned along the way that will make your high school years successful!

Chern-Tay Shih (Kevin) — Cover and TOC Atist, Cartoonist, History Columnist, and Layout Designer Hello, howlers! I am Kevin the “pun”ster, and I am currently the school’s photographer. Beside being a school photographer, I also draw comics and some random illustrations. Not to mention, I like puns, and I will “pun”ish everyone if you don’t laugh at my jokes. :)

Fun Hye (Grace) — Comic Artist I’m Grace from Korea and I’m 17 years old. I love to draw comics and illustrations in my free time. I’m sure I will have a good experience in The Howl.

Tanakrit Changcharoenkij (Kris) - Psychology Columnist Hmm… How do I start this? My name is Kris. I am currently a sophomore, and this year I’ll be finally joining HOWL for all the times as it has piqued my interest. Speaking of interests, I like to read mangas, eating, and being lazy in general. As a new member of the HOWL, I’ll be writing about psychology and philosophy since they are the two things interest me. All in all, this is probably going to be the only time that I write this casually since I’ll be delving into serious matters this year.

Parichat Yangnithichalothorn (Lily) — Cartoonist Hello guys, my name is Lily. I am a senior this year. Normally people would called me Lily Y because we have two “Lilys” in the senior class, just so you know. I am working as a comic artist for the Howl. I am interested in drawing some comics, so I chose to be a comic artist, except for the Halloween issue. For that, I will be publishing a short article, oops, I mean story of a first and second hand experience on ghosts.

Nantawat Wang (Justin) — Fiction Writer My name is Justin, and I’m in 11th grade. My current topics will be comic and fiction writing, I’m not Shakespeare or anything, so don’t expect an award winning story from me. I joined the HOWL because I want to try something different and I want to leave some impact on the school before I leave. I like satirical comedies, games, memes, and most notably, I’m a disgusting otaku, but at least I have some decency to begin with. I hope joining the HOWL will improve both my writing and drawing skills.

Pawaret Techasukij (Max) - K-popColumnist Hello, my name is Max and I’m a Junior this year. I’m an avid follower of entertainment and news, especially anything music or viral, but I will’m mostly be writing about things that interest me! (and that’s plenty of things I don’t think I can list all at once). I hope my writing is good and alluring enough for you to read!
