01 | THE HOWL | March 2018

Recap of February Yu-Lou Wei (Maggie) February is suppose to be the shortest month of the year, so shouldn’t it be the most calm, peaceful, and uneventful one? This year, at least, proved entirely different.

February 6, 2018 A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the province of Hualien in the northeast of Taiwan just 10 days prior to the Chinese New Year. Hualien is famous for its Taroko Gorge, the largest national park in Taiwan, and for its beautiful nature scenery. The earthquake was shallow and centered only around 21 km north of the city of Hualien in the East China Sea. Rescue teams worked for days to try to rescue civilians stuck under toppled buildings, risking their lives to go in nearly-collapsed structures despite constant aftershocks throughout Hualien. The building most affected by the earthquake was the Marshall Hotel and the Yun Tsui Apartment, where it is said the 4th floor became the 1st floor after the collapse. Both buildings were dangerously tilting on one side, and are now being removed. The last two casualties were removed from the Yun Tsui Apartment on February 25, 2018. During the rescue efforts, aids from both Taiwanese citizens and international allies and friends were overwhelming and heartwarming. A food-truck drove all over from YiLan, another province of Taiwan, to provide food to the rescue teams on site all throughout the crucial 72

hours of rescue. A Japanese rescue team came into Taiwan 3 days after the earthquake to help search for survivors. Taiwanese companies, including Foxconn, the Formosa Plastics, the Pegatron Corp., and the Cathay Financial Holdings Co., donated a sum of more than 800,000,000 NTD to help with reconstruction and civilian aid.

February 9, 2018 TCIS celebrated our annual Chinese New Year celebration. This year was a huge success, from the performances in the morning to the booths in the afternoon, to a full demonstration of Taiwanese food culture that was on display!

February 14, 2018 Valentines Day this year was during Chinese New Year, and just one day before the Chinese New Year’s Eve! There was much anticipation for the Chinese New Year in Asia, and excitement flowed around. It would be heartless to not mention, however, on February 14th, a mass shooting conducted by Nikolas Jacob Cruz in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that killed 17 high school students. The shooting lasted 6 minutes, but casualties and mental torment of students was immense. Cruz was arrested 1 hour and 20 minutes after the shooting. After the shooting, survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School formed the Never Again MSD advocacy group. The students spoke out for gun control to prevent another school shooting, and have received support from people all across America and throughout the globe. Almost 200 colleges in America, including Harvard, MIT, and the University of Florida have added their names to the #NeverAgain Colleges to commit themselves to defending and supporting the movement.

February 19, 2018 - Back to TCIS! This past month was, in the least, extremely unnerving. However, we must remember as we head into March that from past events of natural and human disasters, it is crucial that we learn something from it. Emotions that were incited can not be forgotten; solutions and improvements should be the focus. Remember the courageous students, rescue teams, and support when people and nations get together. We should strive not only for a better month, but for a better future.

Movies in March 2018 Pornnapa Huang (Coco) The film industry has gone through progressive changes in recent years with movements such as #OscarsSoWhite and #TimesUp. With these events, it’s no surprise movies grew to have more diversity and awareness, although there are still issues within the industry. After the Golden Globe Awards, there are plenty of award-winning films to watch in Thai theaters! Without further ado, here are some movies that you should definitely keep an eye on this month. (Release dates are all according to www.majorcineplex.com)

Catch Them Before They Go! The Shape of Water* (February 1, 2018) Set during the Cold War era in the United States, this movie features an interspecies romance of a mute woman and an aquatic creature. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the plot sends a message of love with no boundaries. It’s a definite must-see as the film features quirky references and diverse characters in a historical setting.

05 | THE HOWL | March 2018

Black Panther (February 14, 2018) Ever since appearing in Captain Ame-rica: Civil War, the royal superhero Black Panther finally has an opportunity to shine in his own movie. It’s also important to note that this phenomenal movie is known to be one of the few to have a Blackmajority cast and creators. As a part of the Mar vel Cinematic Universe with a soundtrack by Kendrick Lamar, it’s no wonder that this movie is well known in pop culture.

Lady Bird* (February 15, 2018) In this coming-of-age movie, the plot centers around the ups and downs in a mother-daughter relationship. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson is a unique and funny teenager who is experiencing her senior year after moving away with her mother. Set in the 90s, the visuals of the film bring back nostalgia and relatable themes of teenage life no matter how young or old the viewers are.

06 | THE HOWL | February 2018

Up and Coming A Wrinkle In Time (March 15, 2018) A Disney movie with stunning visuals and unique plot, the movie has a cost a whopping $300 million dollars, and it’s the first movie in history to have an African American director with a movie budget that high. The film has magical elements of a Disney movie, but it also has a variety of characters that can inspire children who watch the film as well. Love, Simon (March 15, 2018) Based on the popular young adult book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, the movie creates a different approach to teen movies with a gay protagonist. Its humor focuses on the struggles of being in the closet. Not to mention, it’s a romance and drama movie with a twist, so it’s a must-watch!

*This notes that the movie is nominated in the 75th Golden Globe Awards.

13 | THE HOWL | March 2018

Horoscope Of the month: Pisces Chia-Wen Hsu (Gill) & An-Ni Liao (Annie) Time period: February 18 – March 20 Element: Water Ruling Planet: Neptune Symbol: Fish Sign Ruler: Jupiter (ancient), Neptune (modern)

Celebrities and Famous People: • Albert Einstein Mar/14 • Steve Jobs Feb/24 • George Washington Feb/22 • Justin Bieber Mar/1

14 | THE HOWL | February 2018

Character Traits: In our opinion, we think they are “artistic,” ( I know that most of the people are artistic even if they are not Pisces…) but in their own unique way. Let’s bring up an example: Justin Bieber. Despite the fact that he has created controversy and chaos, we still have to admit that he’s really talented and important in the music industry. Another trait that we want to point out is their “sensitive” emotion, and “creativity”. We all knew that Steve Jobs got kicked out from his own company before. Later on, they found out the fact that no one could replace Job’s intelligent abilities and creative ideas, so he was back with a huge success and huge impact to our society. Even though people often criticize them f0r various reasons, they could still believe in their faith, and kept on doing what they have talent and passion to. These people must have huge sacrifices to reach success and impact the new generation. If they can offer such a sacrifice for us and themselves, then why are we attacking them with nonsense?

Compatibility with other horoscopes: Let’s not set any limits for compatibility, because you could love anyone without caring if their horoscope matches with yours. However, there are some suggestions that Pisces would get along with the following… • Water (Scorpio & Cancer) - Most people agree that horoscopes that belong to the same element can get along nicely. • Earth (Capricorn & Taurus) - Earth needs Water… (what a nice explanation…)

15 | THE HOWL | March 2018

Anyways, it doesn’t matter what horoscope you/they are, the most important thing is to love what you love no matter what. đ&#x;˜Š

What We Conclude on Pisces (in one sentence): A professional in what they love, and most attractive for the emotions...

Interesting stories about them: “I have a friend who’s Pisces, and often times I see passion in their eyes‌ it’s not easy to see a person who’s that engaged on what their doing‌â€? “She’s not the funniest person, however, she’s humorous in her own wayâ€? “Oh‌ she’s Caring‌ nice‌ and sometimes clumsy too‌â€?

How they see themselves: “I find myself generally quiet and conservative. Although I must say that my mind never seems to stop. It buzzes persistently with my thoughts and imagination. Still, water truly seems to run deep, especially for the ‘fish’ zodiac‌â€?

Do you have Pisces friends? Do they have similar traits as those famous people? Hope you like this article, and you are always welcome to share your comments & ideas with us! We’ll see you in April!!

Current Affairs with Johnny, the soon to be Diplomat Jirapat Tangittipalakorn (Johnny)

From the tension between North Korea and the United States of America, what will happen in the future, and how do we find solution to the problem?” Since the end of the cold war in 1950s, one of the problematic regions of the Korean Peninsula has been an ongoing problem, and no peace treaty has been signed by both Koreas (North and South).

A brief summary on South and North Korea: The world is divided into 3 groups of countries. The Communists (Soviets), The Democratic (USA and their allies), and the Neutral (Switzerland). As World War II ended, The Soviets and The USA were agreeing on who owns what, who gets what, and most importantly who is the strongest… (Let me tell you, this doesn’t end well). Long story short, Korea was broken into two countries: the North influenced by the Soviet and the South being supported by the USA. This is what we call a “proxy war” – meaning, fighting a war on foreign ground. Anyways, they kept fighting for 50 years, and the border was drawn on the DMZ, or the “demilitarized zone,” which is very militarized :| and from that point onwards South Korea continuously grow as one of the biggest economies of the Asia Pacific region; on the other hand, the Soviet Union kind of just fell apart because there’s no food and food is important. Anyways…

29 | THE HOWL | March 2018

North Korea has no one to support, and they just have their supreme Kim leaders to lead the country for decades. I told you that there were not any concrete plans to deal with the situation and the dispute between two Korean territories some think this might lead to violence in the future. In these few decades, North Korea has been developing their own nuclear weapons because you know it is scary when the other Korea is being supported by the country to invent nuclear weapons in the first place The North Koreans did this to establish themselves as a superpower, and to have a tool for their negotiation in the future. However, the US was panicking and were trying to put North Korea under pressure by sanctions and nuclear threats from our good ol’ friend Donald J. Trump! Yay! (insert rolled eyes emoji here). From the direction of two radical leaders, violence might break out in the Asia-pacific region: that’s us… oh kay. For example, the North Koreans became mad at the Philippines because they are so good of friends with USA. Moreover, affecting the economy of our region in terms of shipping routes, tourism, etc…. Let’s not forget that these countries have allies, so let’s go back to World War II - how did the British join WWII? Hmmmmmmm… yeah, it was because the Germans invaded Belgium and Belgium was friends with the British, bringing them into war. This is a threat to countries in our region as the U.S is allies with South Korea, Japan, and Philippines. While North Korea has its old commie friends: China and Russia. How do we fix this… I’m no diplomat, but maybe in the future I will be. We have to solve this problem in the most diplomatic way, which is negotiating: bilateral discussion or arbitration. The cooperation between two nations in terms of security might lessen the tension in the region, as the neighboring

30 | THE HOWL | February 2018

countries are living in constant fear as they are both pointing their nuclear weapons, capable of killing millions of people, at each other. Secondly, in the case that they do not approach a common ground, international sanctions might need to be imposed on North Korea for the safety of the nations. For peace and wellbeing of both countries and the world, they should leave behind their different pasts and look towards the future of the world.
