Eulogy

The Precious Life of Miss Agnes Lediard Agnes Lediard, so lovingly called Miss Agnes, Mama, Sister Agnes and Granny, originally from Hanslow, St. Elizabeth, was born on July 6, 1914. She received her primary education in St. Elizabeth. She must have been a very bright student because she had a wide range of vocabulary and used words that sometimes needed a dictionary to define. She spelled her words correctly and had very neat penmanship. As a young adult, Miss Agnes migrated to the parish of Manchester and took residence in the district of Evergreen. Miss Agnes, a mother of six children, one of whom (Othneil Ferguson) preceded her in death. Miss Agnes loved her children and wherever she was, she was the cornerstone of the family. She was a true matriach. Miss Agnes loved her family and loved having little children around her. She raised several of her grand children and great grand children. She would always have something to “put in their hands”, as she would say. This did not exclude her grown children. She was always concerned about the welfare of her family. Miss Agnes was a self taught dressmaker and made clothes for her children but her best skill was cooking. Her pot-roasted pork and brown stewed chicken was incomparable. Many relatives have tried to duplicate these delectable dishes but failed. Her bammies, puddings and totos were also delicious delights. As much as she baked and cooked, she was always conscientious of gaining weight but would always serve others double and even tripple portions. In the early 70’s Miss Agnes became a member of the Evergreen Pentecostal Church and continued to be until the time of her death. Sister Agnes, as her church brethen would call her, loved sunday school. She looked forward to memorizing verses and even whole chapters of the bible. Unfortunately, as the years went by, Sister Agnes lost her vision and was totally blind but she was very thankful to have her bible verses in her memory. On her 100th birthday, she proudly recited the 23rd Psalm. Proverbs 31 describes a virtuous woman. Sister Agnes’ character is very befitting to several verses such as v.15; “rising early and feeding her family”, v16; “she considereth a field and buyeth it and with her hands plants a vineyard”, v.17; “she girdeth her loins with strength” and v.20; “she stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy”. On July 22, 2014, in the comfort of her daughter’s home, Miss Agnes’ earthly work was completed and she was called to be home with the Lord. She will be missed dearly. Miss agnes Lediard leaves to cherish her loving memory, five children: Phyllis Stephenson-Dunkley, Enid Stephenson-Johnson, Caswell Stephenson, Esmie Stephenson-Page, and Sonia Guthrie; thirty six grand children, seventy seven great grand children, fifty seven great, great, grand children and one great, great, great grand child; also two brothers Leo and Caswell Stephenson; as well as other relatives, church family and many dear friends. Mama, Sis Agnes, Miss Agnes, Granny has gone on before us and will be missed dearly but will never be forgotten.

Hymns O I WANT TO SEE HIM

When in valleys low I look toward the mountain height, And behold my Savior there, leading in the fight, With a tender hand outstretched toward the valley low, Guiding me, I can see, as I onward go.

As I journey through the land, singing as I go, Pointing souls to Calvary—to the crimson flow, Many arrows pierce my soul from without, within; But my Lord leads me on, through Him I must win.

When before me billows rise from the mighty deep, Then my Lord directs my bark; He doth safely keep, And He leads me gently on through this world below; He’s a real Friend to me, oh, I love Him so.

Refrain: Oh, I want to see Him, look upon His face, There to sing forever of His saving grace; On the streets of glory let me lift my voice, Cares all past, home at last, ever to rejoice. When in service for my Lord dark may be the night, But I’ll cling more close to Him, He will give me light; Satan’s snares may vex my soul, turn my thoughts aside; But my Lord goes ahead, leads whate’er betide.

I MUST TELL JESUS

Verse 3 Tempted and tried I need a great Savior, One who can help my burdens to bear; I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus; He all my cares and sorrows will share,

Verse 1 I must tell Jesus all of my trials; I cannot bear these burdens alone; In my distress He kindly will help me; He ever loves and cares for His own.

Verse 4 O how the world to evil allures me! O how my heart is tempted to sin! I must tell Jesus; He will enable Over the world the vic’try to win.

Chorus I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! I cannot bear my burdens alone; I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! Jesus can help me, Jesus alone. Verse 2 I must tell Jesus all of my troubles; He is a kind, compassionate Friend; If I but ask Him, He will deliver, And in my griefs with me He will blend.

Mama’s Favorite Scriptures Galatians 5:19-23King James Version (KJV)

James 4:6 King James Version (KJV)

‌God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 6

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 19

James 4:15King James Version (KJV)

For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 15

1 John 1:7King James Version (KJV)

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 7

1 Corinthians 13 King James Version (KJV)

1

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all

things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Psalm 119:11 King James Version (KJV)

John 14:15 King James Version (KJV)

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. 11

1

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Psalm 139:23-24King James Version (KJV)

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. 23

Isaiah 53:4-5 King James Version (KJV)

Philippians 4:8 King James Version (KJV)

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Poems

I’M FREE - UNKNOWN Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life’s been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free.

IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW If you could see me now you wouldn’t shed a tear. Though you may not understand why I’m no longer there. Remember my spirit that is the real me because I’m still very Much alive, I’ve just been set free, Oh, if you could only see! I have beheld our Father’s face and I’ve touched my Savior’s Hand. All of Heaven’s angels rejoiced as I entered the promised Land. Beyond the gates of pearl I’ve walked on the golden streets. I’ve touched the walls of jasper and dipped my foot in the Crystal sea. The beauty is beyond words and nothing could Compare, I’ve even seen your mansion and someday I’ll meet you there. Let Jesus be your guide because His Word will show you the way! So please don’t Cry because we will meet again someday. By Patsy Stambaugh Deskins

Graveside Songs WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more, And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair; When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there. Refrain: When the roll is called up yonder, When the roll is called up yonder, When the roll is called up yonder, When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there. On that bright and *cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise, And the glory of His resurrection share; When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there. Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun, Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care; Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

I’LL MEET YOU IN THE MORNING

I’ll meet you in the morning by the bright riverside When all sorrow has drifted away I’ll be standin’ at the portals when the gates open wide At the close of life’s long weary day I’ll meet you in the morning with a ‘How do you do?’ And we’ll sit down by the river and with rapture our auld acquaint-tance re-new You’ll know me in the morning by the smile that I wear When I meet you in the morning, in the city that is built four square I will meet you in the morning in the sweet by and by And exchange the old cross for a crown There will be no disappointments and nobody shall die In that land when life’s sun goeth down I’ll meet you in the morning with a ‘How do you do?’ And we’ll sit down by the river and with rapture our auld acquaint-tance re-new You’ll know me in the morning by the smile that I wear When I meet you in the morning, in the city that is built four square

Graveside Songs cont’d IN THE SWEET BY AND BY

WE SHALL HAVE A GRAND TIME

There’s a land that is fairer than day, And by faith we can see it afar; For the Father waits over the way To prepare us a dwelling place there.

We shall have a grand time Up in heaven We shall haven a grand time Up in heaven Have a grand time

Refrain: In the sweet by and by, We shall meet on that beautiful shore; In the sweet by and by, We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

Singing with the angels Shouting Hallelujah We shall have a grand time Up in heaven Have a grand time

We shall sing on that beautiful shore The melodious songs of the blessed; And our spirits shall sorrow no more, Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

WHAT A GLORY THAT WILL BE What a glory that will be When the ransomed souls we see What a Hallelujah band when we meet in Beulah land What a glory that will be

To our bountiful Father above, We will offer our tribute of praise For the glorious gift of His love And the blessings that hallow our days.

WHEN I GET THERE

I’M GONNA SAY GOOD- BYE I’m gonna say good- bye I’m gonna say good- bye When my life on earth has ended I’m gonna say good- bye

When I get there When I get there I will sing and shout when I get there Hallelujah, praise ye the lord when I get there

LET THOSE HALLELUJAHS LET THEM ROLL

JOHN SAW THEM COMING ROBED IN WHITE John saw them coming, John saw them coming John saw them coming robed in white They all were numbered, they all were numbered John saw them coming robed in white

Let those Hallelujahs let them roll Way down in my sanctified soul I don’t care what you’re going through God has the power to see you through Let those Hallelujahs let them roll
