Who Was Vonnie? Dalrick Henry – Brother

As we celebrate the life of such a beautiful soul, it is only right for all to know who she really was. “Who was Vonnie McGowan-Arscott?” Well, Vonnie was a woman of God who was loyal and committed to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Vonnie was an outstanding wife who loved and committed herself to her husband. She was a great daughter who loved her mother and a “friend’s-friend” to her many friends from all walks of life. She was a wonderful person who would give you her last. If anyone should ask you, “Who was Vonnie?” tell them she was an outstanding Mother who worked very hard to take care of her children. She was an amazing and caring sister to me. I remember as a little boy growing up in the west side of Jamaica when my sister would come to visit; those would be the happiest times of my life. The saddest time was when she was getting ready to depart. Vonnie was the light of our family. She loved to help others, and has touched countless lives with her tender loving kindness. If anyone should ask you, “Who was Vonnie?” tell them she was a fearless champion when it came to charity work and public service. She was a woman of integrity and good character. So, as we are gathered here to celebrate the life of Vonnie McGowan-Arscott, what can we learn from her life? We learn that we all are loaners to each other…parents are loaners to their children and children are loaners to their parents. We all are God’s property, and when God requires his property, he will call us home. As we depart from here today, let us love one another to an extreme degree, and acknowledge the love of each other. For we know not the minute, nor the hour, when the Master will call us home. Vonnie, while you rest in peace, and while you’re absent from our midst, you are not forgotten. For we know that we part, to meet again. I love you from the bottom of my heart, and I thank you for being such an amazing sister to me. May you forever rest in the loving arms of God. Who was Vonnie McGowan Arscott? She was my sister! I salute you, my dear sister. Rest in peace until the glorious coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Search Dr. Ivy Claudette Armstrong

I searched for Him in the Halls of fame, Because I had been told That He had quite a Name Famous and Big and Bold. I searched for Him in the Halls of light, Where prominent stars glow, But the faces I saw were not so bright. None seemed the Way to know. I searched for Him in the Schools of thought Where eloquent speakers teach; Their theories were not what I sought None my thirsty mind could reach.

I searched for Him in kindly deeds; My search proved null and vain, Not fulfilling my soul’s deep needs. I searched again and again. In dire frustration I went to Church. The Preacher said “Repent”. My heart was dry as a bark of birch The name “sinner” I did resent. However, I knelt and confessed my sin There in the Church that day I experienced peace and joy within, Love came to my heart to stay. Today my search has come to its end I’ve found a precious Guide. He’s Jesus Christ, My Saviour and Friend! My soul, at last, is satisfied.

Songs of Praise & Comfort How Great Thou Art

When We All Get to Heaven

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus Sing His mercy and His grace In the mansions bright and blessed He’ll prepare for us a place

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art

Refrain: When we all get to heaven What a day of rejoicing that will be When we all see Jesus We’ll sing and shout the victory

And when I think of God, His Son not sparing Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And lead me home, what joy shall fill my heart Then I shall bow with humble adoration And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee How great Thou art, how great Thou art

While we walk the pilgrim pathway Clouds will overspread the sky But when trav’ling days are over Not a shadow, not a sigh Let us then be true and faithful Trusting, serving every day Just one glimpse of Him in glory Will the toils of life repay Onward to the prize before us Soon His beauty we’ll behold Soon the pearly gates will open We shall tread the streets of gold

Kingdom Service

I

n the midst of a busy service-oriented life, amidst all the accolades, awards, and achievements, Vonnie McGowan-Arscott came face-to-face with a need that was greater than all she had already achieved in this life. She recognized that she needed to serve God and to have a personal relationship with Him. In 2009, Sis Vonnie was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and shortly thereafter she received the gift of the Holy Ghost.

When Sis Vonnie joined the family at Pentecostal Tabernacle, she brought her flair for excellence and her commitment to service. Her new church family was incorporated into her service-oriented lifestyle. She conducted several passport renewal drives to assist church members and their families in navigating the passport renewal process. She also assisted her church sister and friend – Sis. Ivy Armstrong, with the planning and marketing for the launch of her new book. After the 2008 Olympics, she was instrumental in arranging the visit of Jamaica’s athletic champions to a Sunday morning church service. The most notable impact that Sis Vonnie’s presence had on this congregation was the courage she displayed during her challenging illnesses. Not only did she continue to attend worship services but she was also an example to all of us on how to finish strong. Even during bouts of illnesses she continued to serve the community. Her resilience and strength will continue to be examples to us of how to face adversity. As her church family, we join with her biological family and friends in celebrating her life even as we mourn her loss. During a visit by Pastor Robert Stewart, Sis Vonnie asked him to sing “Order My Steps in Your Word.” We are comforted by the fact that she allowed her life to be directed by The Word of God. It is our prayer that all who grieve the loss of this champion, who has touched so many lives, will follow in her footsteps and make this a personal prayer. Order my steps in your Word dear Lord Lead me guide me every day Send your anointing Father I pray Order my steps in your Word Pastor S. Robert & Lady Jennifer Stewart The Pentecostal Tabernacle Family

Tributes Hon. Edmund Bartlett CD, MP Minister of Tourism – Jamaica Carmen, Edmund, William, Leia & Sarah Vonnie McGowan-Arscott can be best described as a complete woman, a humble yet proud product of Jamaica. Her grace and poise, as well as her firm but charming demeanor constantly attracted people of all walks of life to her. I met Vonnie 35 years ago in New York when she was a radio disc jockey and an enchanting musical diva, weaving her magic as she charmed “The Big Apple.” Her infectious humor and energetic spirit attracted my attention and led me to discover that we shared similar roots as she was a daughter of Westmoreland, Jamaica. We instantly became friends. Vonnie became a champion of The Jamaican Diaspora and an indefatigable defender of the rights of the poor and less fortunate in Jamaica. Her countless visits to small communities gave hope and comfort to needy Jamaicans and offered a new path to many whose lives seemed lost. She loved people and dedicated her life to their upliftment through music, song, and philanthropy. Her spirit of volunteerism could not be tamed. Even in sickness she continued to give of herself to various charitable causes including the children of Barrett Town in St James, my own constituency. Through her efforts, Vonnie has contributed to the academic success achieved by the students in that community each year. Vonnie was a patriot, a fierce defender of Jamaica - land we love. She delighted in all its achievements - whether in sports, music, arts, or the sciences. It was no wonder therefore when in October 2011, a grateful nation recognized her philanthropy and dedication to the upliftment of Jamaicans overseas and awarded her the high honour of Order of Distinction, officer class. On a more personal note, Vonnie was a dear family friend and a close associate of my dear wife and children. We are indebted to her for the care and love she gave during our most trying moments in Florida, mourning the passing of our only daughter Lisa Simone. Our hearts still burn within us as we reflect on her awesome presence then. Vonnie taught us how to appreciate God’s gifts in any form. She never fought God’s designs but faithfully stayed her course and kept the faith. Vonnie loved life and lived it well. She understood love and gave it in abundance. She knew care and lavished it without seeking rewards. She had empathy and expressed it without reservations. She nurtured friends and remained friendly. She embraced kindness and exuded charity. She was a mother, a family icon, a wife - the love of Paul’s life. What a woman! So now she goes without a murmur to a better place and a nobler life. May the God of Peace grant her eternal rest and everlasting joy.

Hon. Bruce Golding Former Prime Minister of Jamaica

With the passing of Dr. Vonnie McGowan-Arscott, Jamaica has lost one of its most committed and dynamic diaspora champions. For more than 30 years, Vonnie immersed herself, for the most part on a completely voluntary basis, in a slew of activities and programs for the upliftment of Jamaicans both at home and in the USA. These include providing support in the areas of health, education, and sports development as well as to vulnerable social groups such as the elderly and indigent. She has assisted countless students from Jamaica to gain admission to American colleges and transform their lives from one of despair to a vast horizon of hope and opportunity. She has provided valuable exposure to many local artistes, some of whom have gone on to achieve international acclaim. During her long tenure in radio and television broadcasting, Vonnie’s was a strong voice on defense and promotion of Jamaica, its people, and achievements. Vonnie worked tirelessly to help undocumented Jamaican migrants to regularize their status and she was actively engaged in mobilizing Jamaican-American citizens to become registered voters and participate in US elections as a way to make their presence felt and exert some impact on policy decisions. Although she was passionate about Jamaica, Vonnie extended many of her civic and philanthropic initiatives to encompass other Caribbean islands and their nationals. It was in recognition of her outstanding work that Vonnie was conferred with the Order of Distinction in the National Honours and Awards of 2011. Her passing closes the chapter on a life of dedicated service but she has left a rich legacy of selflessness, courage, and determination. Our most fitting tribute to her memory must be to ensure that the flame she lit is kept burning, the journey on which she embarked is sustained, and the fountain of hope and joy she provided for so many never runs dry.

Ambassador Dr. Basil K. Bryan Former Consul General of Jamaica in New York The news of the passing of Vonnie McGowan Arscott came with the disappointment that we had, indeed, lost a dear friend. Vonnie was a special person - humble in the way she lived her life, decent in the relationship she had with those she dealt with, and generous and caring to those who needed her support. She could always be relied upon to respond to national and community needs, as requested. She was considerate to those who needed her help, with a deep belief in the Biblical adage: To whom much is given, much is expected.

I can recall the many times when she would never hesitate to put herself at the service of those from Jamaica and elsewhere. I was a close observer and witness to her community outreach and her many charitable deeds. How well do I recall her tremendous help in the promotion and marketing of my book on the Jamaican diaspora, including arranging the Jamaica launch of the book at King’s House. She demonstrated her care and concern, not merely through words, but constructively, in action. And how fitting it was when she was honored by the country of her birth with the Order of Distinction award, a living testament to her life and work. As we give thanks for her life, let us use the legacy she has left us to remember her kindly and to walk along a similar path, with the time-tested reminder that “even as you do it for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do it for me.” I shall remember Vonnie in an admirable way. May her light continue to shine brightly and may she now find peace in her Father’s kingdom.

...the way we were

Mother’s Last Day I held her hand as I silently whispered goodbye A last breath as I watched her die Her skin swollen - battered and bruised By all the things that they felt they needed to use I stroked her hair and wiped her eyes Wanting so much for them to open and see That I was alone there in the world Alone with the agony growing inside of me I watched those around me shed their tears And utter their words of sorrow How could they know that I was dying inside? I couldn’t and you wouldn’t - face tomorrow One last time I kissed your face And held your hand to touch my cheek I wanted to carry you away from there My fragile mother who was just too weak I heard the people all around me The silence of the machines now so loud And I walked away - my heart now broken And tried to face the waiting crowd Tell my grandma and Auntie Junie what I say I love and still miss them to this day I will love you forever until I die And now it’s time so say goodbye R.M “JodiLeigh” Jody Black Forever you are Lady Bug Your legacy will live on within me My promise… you watch and see

You Are in My Heart Robert P. Arscott - your baby boy

Your face will always be in our mind Your smile that we have seen many times Your eyes always seem to light the sky at night Yet the final battle you could not fight Your life was dedicated to doing kindly deeds Always a helping hand for others in need You may not exist in this world anymore But you will always be in our memory You suffered the wrath of a horrible disease For this - many blessings I pray you receive While you endured the trauma again and again A smile remained on your face through all the pain This is a journey we all must take alone As the Master’s plan is for all of us to come home After today you may not be visible to human eyes But we will talk to you in silence – your spirit will reply You may be sleeping in heaven But you are forever living in our hearts

My Beloved On Thursday August 16, 2016, my beloved Vonnie transitioned this life to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. Praise be to God. I remember your brave face through all the pain you suffered; how I wish I could have taken some of the pain from you. I became so much closer to you during your illness. We had our daily devotion together, we prayed, we shared the word, and you ministered to me. Your Godly advice on personal issues was invaluable. I watched you as you grew physically weaker but spiritually stronger. I am truly honored to have been your husband for over twenty five years and I know that many of my achievements were due to this esteemed position. Vonnie, one day we will meet again and I will give you the strongest hug and many kisses. I say goodbye with a feeling of humility and submission to Divine authority. I know you will be in heaven waiting for me. I loved you once…love you still…always have…always will. Sleep on my beloved, and may your soul rest in peace.

Choruses

Blessed Assurance

Some bright morning when this life is over - I’ll fly away To that home on Gods celestial shore - I’ll fly away

We shall have a grand time, up in heaven We shall have a grand time up in heaven have a grand time Walking with the angels Singing Glory Hallelujah We shall have a grand time up in heaven, have a grand time.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Chorus I’ll fly away, oh glory I’ll fly away in the morning When I die hallelujah by and by I’ll fly away When the shadows of this life have gone - I’ll fly away Like a bird from these prison walls I’ll fly - I’ll fly away Chorus Just a few more weary days and then - I’ll fly away To a land where joys will never end - I’ll fly away Chorus

*** We shall have a new name in that land In that land, that sunny sunny land We shall have a new name in that land In that sunny land New name, precious name In that sunny land New name, precious name In that sunny land.

Chorus This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Saviour, all the day long; This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Saviour, all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Perfect submission, all is at rest I in my Saviour am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
