“Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 1:3). Once again, we are celebrating another milestone for First United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, Hartford. The grace of God has enabled us to persevere and reach our 18th year anniversary. As was expected, the intensity of the battle has been unfailing, but thanks be to God in whom we have victory, we are still rejoicing and “Moving Forward in the Midst of Change”. I would like to use this medium to thank the ministry heads for their invaluable service in their respective positions, and the work they continue to do. Thanks also to the brethren for not allowing the pandemic period to deter them from their service in the ministry of Christ. The pandemic has had a trying effect on Christendom, many have faltered, but thanks to God the strength of many has prevailed and we are still declaring victory. As we continue moving forward, let us not lose momentum, but let’s be steadfast and diligent in the ministry of Christ reclaiming and claiming souls for the kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. I admonish all to be aware of this crucial fact that the secret of winning our battle over all things we face is to be strong in the Lord, and the power of His might (Eph. 6:10). We must allow our weaknesses, trials, persecutions, perplexities, distresses, and every negative thing that comes our way drive us to Jesus Christ. There is no better place than in His presence. Overseer Roy D. Wright

My fellow brethren in Christ: Please accept greetings in the most Holy and powerful Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a great privilege for me to be a part of this memorable occasion – First United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic eighteenth (18th) year church anniversary celebration. l thank God for allowing my family and I to be a part of First United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, East Hartford, Connecticut, under the leadership of Overseer Roy D. Wright and First Lady Methlyne Wright. Throughout the eighteen years, I know the journey must have included not only victories but also testing, trials, setbacks, etc. I also know that a church built upon the foundation of our Lord Jesus Christ is built to withstand any storm. “…this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” (1 John 5:14). Let me take this time to encourage you all to stand fast in the faith and hold on to the end. We pray that God will open doors of utterance so we will continue to reach those in need. To the youth ministry, with great joy we celebrate with you and encourage you all to be faithful “for ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise” (Hebrews10:36). To all the other auxiliary ministries of this assembly, I pray that God will continue to reveal himself and pour out of his spirit on each worker in the vineyard, as we continue this journey. Apostle Paul reminds us to reach forth unto those things which are before. Therefore, as we celebrate eighteen (18) years, let’s continue to pray for each other and the leaders that God will ever keep us steadfast. Love you all saints and keep on being faithful. Your humble Servants, Pastor Carlton Miller Sis. Grace Miller 5

Church History H U M B L E

B E G I N N I N G S

The Ministry of First United Church of Jesus Christ (Apostolic) East Hartford, Connecticut commenced in the 1980’s when a small group started conducting prayer meetings in the home of Bro. Easton and Sis Hazel Redway. They were supported by a group from First United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, Brooklyn, New York who visited weekly to join in the worship. During one of these services, Pastor, then Bro. Roy D Wright, was invited to join this group of worshippers and as divine guidance would have it, became a part of the group, then later the primary leader. The lack of a building and other circumstances caused the initial stage of the ministry to be dormant for a few years. However, the summer of 2004 marked a pivotal turning point in the life of Min. Roy D. Wright regarding the ministry. During the forgoing years, Min. Wright continued to labor in the service of the Lord working with the First United ministry in Springfield, functioning in various district positions. The latter two years were spent laboring in the ministry at Pentecostal Tabernacle (Apostolic) Church (PTA), in Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked closely with Pastor Lloyd Russell. August of 2004 proved to be a defining period in the life of Min. Wright. The calling of the Lord moved in such a powerful way that he could no longer ignore the call to leadership that he for so long sought to evade. He, accompanied by Evangelist Joan Smith, first

6

met with his Diocesan Bishop, Leslie J. Barnes, and shared with him the charge God had placed upon him. He then met with Pastor Lloyd Russell and informed him of the charge and his decision to be obedient to God’s leading. Shortly after, Pastor Wright left Pentecostal Tabernacle (Apostolic) Church with the blessing of Pastor Russell and started Sunday School in his home as instructed by Bishop Leslie J. Barnes until a permanent place could be secured. The group of eight (8) that started this phase of the work in Pastor Wright’s home rapidly grew. Within a month and a half, they rented a building and began to worship at 1160 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford, Connecticut. Both the rental space and the maintenance cost were extremely high; however, the mercy of God prevailed, and the ministry continued to grow. The building was sold about four months prior to the expiration of the lease and the new owners did not renew it. However, an agreement was entered into between the new owners and Pastor Wright the first week of September (2007) which allowed the church to remain in the building until end of September (2007). Pastor Wright trusted God to provide a new location. Trusting God, Pastor Wright and the Saints vacated the building

7

as agreed although there was no destination in sight. At this point, we felt like the children of Israel sojourning in the wilderness. The first week of October, the church held services at the Holiday Inn on Robert Street in East Hartford. By the following weekend, God provided a way that was nothing short of a miracle. Pastor Wright contacted the Pastor of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, located in the center of the community where they had been evangelizing. Without so much as a lease agreement or prepayment, the Bishop in charge agreed to rent First United a space and handed us the keys urging that we start occupying the building immediately. It was truly a glorious experience as we witnessed the hands of the Lord manifest in our midst. The rent was set forty percent less than we were paying at the other building, and all the facilities we were lacking to function in our targeted ministry were made available. The two years spent at that location was truly the move of God and a confirmation of His purpose for this ministry. The establishment of the Food Bank, Food share and Soup Kitchen were set in place and even now is highly functional and meeting the needs of the community. Throughout this period the ministry encountered some fierce attacks by the enemy but was always victorious as promised by the word of God, “…the gates of hell shall not prevail,” against God’s Church. Although the membership fluctuated and declined at times, the Spirit of the Lord was strong and those who remained grew in God’s Word as they continued relentlessly to build the ministry. At the conclusion of two years at the St. Isaac building, Pastor Wright and the Saints once again moved in obedience to God’s spirit and relocated to Temple Beth Tefilah, 465 Oak Street, East Hartford. The building for the most part had been unoccupied, so Pastor Wright contacted the owners, and the favor of the Lord prevailed. In addition, once again the mighty hand of God was witnessed working on our behalf in the reduction of our rent by 33%. This further assisted the administration of the ministry of First United Church of Jesus Christ (Apostolic) East Hartford. As children of faith, we trust God and need not see evidence of His hands in the process of our lives to continue our walk of faith. Our belief, trust, and absolute obedience to God are not contingent on our understanding of the process by which He chooses to mold us into His ultimate vessel. God alone is omniscient and infinite; therefore, His will dictates our purpose and should be the only guiding force in accomplishing our existence.

Greetings to the Household of Faith in the precious saving Name of Jesus Christ. To my Pastor, Overseer Roy D. Wright and First Lady Missionary Methlyne Wright, I extend holy greetings. I am grateful to Almighty God that I am a part of the First United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, East Hartford, Connecticut Church family and we have come this far by faith, celebrating eighteen (18) years of ministry. The theme, “Moving Forward in the Midst of Change” - Joshua 1: 1-18, is relevant and powerful at this time. While the pandemic has impacted many lives, changing our society forever, we are assured that Jesus Christ remains the same (Heb. 13: 8). The church must and will continue to press forward. In II Corinthians 4: 8- 9, we are reminded that “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken, cast down, but not destroyed.” We are indeed empowered by the Holy Ghost to move forward. The world needs a solution and we have the answer. Therefore, we have resolved in our mind and with much diligence to carry out the great commission knowing that the harvest is ripe (Matt. 9:37). The church will continue to move forward to fulfill this mandate. May God’s blessings be upon you continually as we celebrate eighteen (18) years of service in the Lord. Yours in Christ, Elder Scotlard Black Evangelist Gwendolyn Black

When you migrated to the United States of America, you continued what you have always done in Jamaica – working in the kingdom. Here is the chorus to a song that you always sing in Jamaica: I’m gonna keep on a workin’ til he comes, til he comes, there’s nothing in this world worth tuming around to see, my eyes are on the prize, that’s awaiting me by and by, and I’m a gonna keep on working, til he comes. Pastor Wright there is still work to be done and there ae still victories to be won. In so doing, many, children have been born to your assembly over the years because of your continued good work. T H E W O M E N ’ S M I N I S T R Y

Holy greetings in the saving name of Jesus Christ our Saviour and King! It is with great delight that I welcome you to our 18th church anniversary celebration. We have come this far by faith depending on the Lord. Let me use this opportunity, on behalf of the Women’s Ministry, to honor our Pastor, Overseer Roy D. Wright and First Lady Missionary Methlyne Wright for embracing and running with the vision God gave to them for this ministry. We thank God for their obedience and dedication. The theme, “Moving Forward in the Midst of Change” is both relevant and timely as the church is facing so many changes because of the present pandemic. In Joshua 1, the Israelites were experiencing a major change after the death of Moses; however, they were instructed to get ready to cross the Jordan into the promised land. This change was part of God’s plan to accomplish His purpose. The church, during this season, should see through their spiritual eyes and embrace with confidence that God is Sovereign and in control. It is our Changeless God that enables us to confront a changing world and move forward. Today we have an opportunity, through this ministry, to use our gifts and talents to serve God’s people. Eighteen (18) years comes with many experiences on the journey. These experiences have presented challenges, which have been good and at times difficult, but through it all we are able to testify of the sustaining power of God. We must continue to strive for excellence in our service and remain focused on the prize ahead, while manifesting the power of God through the various outreach ministries. As women of God, we continue to be a mother to the motherless, help to the helpless and a tower of strength to the weak, altogether fulfilling God’s purpose and call on our lives. God bless you all as we continue to do His will and move forward amidst the changes. Your Servant, Evangelist Gwendolyn Black President – Women’s Ministry 14

Greetings to all my brothers and sisters in Christ. I am honored and delighted to greet you for our Church Anniversary. It has been 18 wonderful years since First United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, East Hartford, Connecticut has opened its doors. On behalf of the Youth Ministry, I give God thanks for our Pastor, Overseer Roy D. Wright and First Lady Missionary Methlyne Wright for their hard work and dedication over the years. Through the challenging times, you remained resilient, refusing to give up. Thank you both for your commitment! I too have had the privilege of being a part of this church family for 18 years. The love, support, and guidance received over the years, has helped shape me into the person I am today. In this assembly, there is strength, wisdom, and an abundance of love, and I consider myself blessed to be a member. The theme, “Moving Forward in the Midst of Change”, is so fitting for this time. While Covid-19 has altered the way we gather and worship together, it has not stopped us. Despite these drastic changes, we keep moving forward. Be encouraged that whatever obstacles or challenges come our way, God will continue to keep us. Change may surprise us, but it does not surprise God. Remember that “he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). Being confident of this word, let us continue to press towards fulfilling the Master’s call. We look forward to bigger and mightier moves of God as this assembly continues to grow. Eighteen more years, here we come! In Christ Service, Sis. Shani Smith President, Youth Ministry
