WELCOME

I

t is my delight to welcome you to our 15th Annual Focus on Jesus Summit. Whether you’re a member of our church family here at Pentecostal Tabernacle, visiting from another congregation or a guest; we welcome you to this special time of spiritual renewal, worship, prayer and edification through the word of God.

Our Summit this year has been intentionally developed with varied formats and activities including teaching sessions, ministry of the word, drama presentation, music, worship, praise expressions for all age groups and the diversity of our audience that we hope will challenge, inspire and redirect our focus us to a deliberate and impassioned pursuit of Jesus Christ and an eternal perspective of our purpose. I especially invite all parents and guardians to bring all the children to our 1st FOJ Children’s Summit on Friday at 10:00 a.m., for a unique opportunity designed especially for our youths from ages 6-14 to participate and learn more about the word of God, fellowship, and how to impact the Kingdom. The theme of our Summit this year – THE ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE - has been divinely inspired to refocus and re-awaken our attention to the importance of the urgency of an eternal perspective in these last days. The Book of Mark 8:36 & 37 warns of the dangers of failure of an eternal perspective: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? What good is it if our goals, and our plans, and ambitions are accomplished in this world, and we lose our souls? An eternal perspective is of paramount importance in

our daily living. Throughout the scriptures we are reminded that in the last days Men will be lovers of themselves - 2 Timothy 3:2 They will call evil good – Isaiah 5:20 Scoffers will come - 2 Peter 3:3 Many will fall away - 1Timothy 4:1 Perilous times shall come - 2 Timothy 3:1 All these are evident but the scriptures also remind us in Acts 2:17 Acts 2:17 - And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: It’s my earnest prayer and hope that throughout the course of our various services and activities this week that the Holy Spirit will truly minister to us. As a congregation we’ve engaged in a time of intentional prayer and fasting prior to this Summit with an earnest desire to see the manifestation of God. We are wanting the wind of the spirit of God to renew and revise us; and we are believing for an outpouring of the Spirit’s Oil, bringing deliverance, healing, miracles and more importantly souls, to an eternal relationship and into the Kingdom of God. I hope you will be blessed over the next five days and leave feeling challenged, equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit to be about God’s work in our world today and a renewed commitment to life focus on what really matters - an eternal perspective. My heartfelt thanks to all those who worked over many months in various capacities in putting together this Summit. I am confident that our time together will be a significant moment in our ministry with anticipation of what God will do as we spend time in the presence of God and move forward together in our shared vision and mission to always Focus on Jesus.

The New Covenant

Hebrews 8:7-10, Ephesians 1:4

T

he New Covenant is what the Gospel is all about. Without the New Covenant, there is no Gospel message, no salvation, and no inclusion of Gentiles in God’s promises. God set His plan in motion and it includes us. In short, God’s plan from the beginning was to create a people for Himself. God’s plan includes: • Mercy for our iniquities • Redemption for our transgressions • Remembering our sins no more • Cleansing of our conscience • Writing His laws upon our hearts and minds • Personal intimacy with our Maker • Partaking in the eternal inheritance The vision of redemptive history presented in Ephesians begins from “before the foundation of the world” Ephesians 1:4. At the end of this passage Paul strains his eyes to look forward to the end, when we acquire possession of our

inheritance. Jesus is the one through whom this eternal plan is enacted. God, who dwells in eternity, views things from an eternal perspective. He has an everlasting plan which supersedes and surpasses all others. Only God sees the entire picture; we perceive but a small glimpse.

Holiness: God’s Character Revealed In Us Hebrews 12:14

H

oliness encompasses all the character traits from our heavenly Father being exhibited in our everyday life. It is not limited to cultural interpretation. Jesus demands a lifestyle of holiness. The word of God declares to, “Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). The Bible even goes as far to say, “…. and holiness, without which no man shall see God” (Hebrews 12:14). God requires that His people take on His character and represent Him in this dark world. Therefore, it is imperative for every Christian to fully comprehend the essence of holiness and display it for the world to see. There are 3 important aspects of holiness every Christian needs to know: 1. Holiness Is Separation From Sin (2 Corinthians 6:16-17) Sin must first be addressed before holiness can shine through. The process of dying daily to the wicked deeds of the flesh is holiness becoming evident in our lives.

2. Holiness Demands That We Should Be Different (1 Peter 2:9) (1 Peter 1:13-16) To be holy is to stand out, no matter if the majority bows. When the world condemns we love, when they reject we restore and when they curse enemies we pray. 3. Holiness Is Rooted In Love (1 John 4:7-8) We cannot have God’s character without having love. The word of God says, “If you love me keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Our love for God should propel us to become like him.

Living With An Eternal Perspective 2 Corinthians 4:18; Colossians 3:1-4

T

he purpose of this session is to communicate the importance of living from God’s eternal perspective rather than from a temporal

Important questions to consider: 1. When faced with a decision, ask yourself, “Will this amount to anything in light of eternity?”

A “perspective” is a point of view, a way of thinking about a matter. We are tempted every day to have a temporal rather than an eternal perspective.

2. What is your view on finances, material possessions?

one.

This session will help us to understand: 1. What is an eternal perspective 2. Why we need to live with an eternal perspective 3. Some benefits of living with an eternal perspective 4. Principles of how to develop an eternal perspective

3. How does the eternal perspective impact my choices in relationships and selecting a mate? 4. In which areas do you need to trust God to develop an eternal perspective?

Peculiar, Privileged & Purposed John 1:12; 1 Peter 2:9; Corinthians 5:17

his message is designed to reaffirm children of God regarding their position in Christ and exhort them regarding their purpose.

The gospel of John teaches that the individual who believes and receives Christ becomes a son of God; a highly esteemed position. In 1 Peter 2, we are called a Royal Priesthood, a Holy Nation and a Peculiar People. We who were morally corrupted and enemies of Christ were purchased by God and made joint heirs with Jesus Christ. As such, we became God’s choice and were made a holy habitation for the sovereign King. As Christians, we have a privileged position to live consistently as sons of God. As sons. We are consecrated and justified in the sight of God through Jesus Christ. We should not live as slaves to sin, serving our carnal desires instead we should live as new creatures engrafted in Christ. We are positioned on the earth as ambassadors of God’s Kingdom.

The Power of His Word II Tim. 3:14-16

T

he purpose of this session is to remind attendees that we cannot have a relationship with God if we do not believe His Word. This session will help us to understand: 1. God’s word is infallible (II Tim. 3:16) 2. God’s word was not written based on the private interpretation of the writers. They wrote as the Holy Spirit moved on them. (II Pet 1:20-21) 3. We can only understand and believe God if we diligently research His word. (2 Timothy 2:15; Acts 17:11) 4. Regeneration occurs not only when we believe, but when we begin to obey the Word of God (II Tim. 3:14; Romans 10:17) The accuracy of prophecy has been a major litmus test for the Bible. The Bible has made

several predictions which have actually come to pass without error. With this proof we know that His return is imminent and look forward to the eternal reward (II Tim 4:8, Titus 2:13-14).

J

esus uses the illustration of salt and light to teach about the responsibility of Christians in a dark world. God has transferred us from the kingdom of darkness to His Kingdom and given us the power to reflect His light and His love. Influence is a form of leadership through which we are the channel God uses to effect powerful and lasting change in the world. Both salt and light have powerful influences on their environment. Salt gives flavor to the tasteless and light penetrates and obliterates darkness. By definition, an influence must be different from that which it influences. As Christians, we must be distinctively different from the world. We cannot influence the world when we are worldly ourselves. We cannot give light to the world if we hide our light and revert to a lifestyle of darkness. For light to shine in the darkness it has to be set upon a lampstand and not allowed to be extinguished. For salt to be effective it must maintain its property and not be corrupted by that which it is attempting to change;

this is the standard to which the Child of God is held. This session should lead the Children of God to recognize that the Holy Ghost in us gives us the power to operate as salt and light. We have the power to be different, to maintain our unique qualities, to influence, and to change the world.

s believers in Christ, we are all running a God designed race, to obtain the prize of eternal life with our Lord. In Philippians, Paul writes that he presses toward the mark for the prize. The fact that he describes his position as pressing, depicts that there are obstacles or resistance to his forward movement that he must overcome. As we run this race, there will be hurdles for each of us to get over and seeing that this is not a race designed for how fast we can run or how strong we are (Eccl. 9:11), endurance is crucial in finishing (Heb. 10:36). In this race, we are all in different lanes, pressing towards the same finish line. Our Lord has designed each course specific to us. Life presents many hurdles for each of us. Pain, disappointment, even tragedy are placed in our path. Our competition is tough, sneaky and very deceptive. But, we focus on the race ahead, one hurdle at a time, knowing it will be a challenge and even painful. Healing and overcoming pain and

disappointment in life is a process that takes one hurdle at a time. This session will highlight the tools to overcome each hurdle, finish the race, and receive eternal life in heaven.

he purpose of this session is to substantiate through scripture, the believers’ fate. The session will explore opposing natures and incite the believer to keep pressing towards the prize despite the constant conflict and struggle. There is an inward battle that continuously rages within the life of every believer. It is the conflict between good and evil, right and wrong, the flesh and the Spirit. This war is unremitting and fierce, and the flesh and Spirit are locked in active conflict with one another. As Christians, we can readily identify with the words of the Apostle Paul in Romans 7:23-24. However, he is quick to point out that though he struggles, he is confident that God, the great deliverer, will come to his defense. Therefore, we must endeavor to walk in the Spirit equipping ourselves for the battle. Our defense is in God and we are made champions through Christ.

The bible speaks of heaven and the various crowns as a final destination and promised rewards. However, it is necessary to note that one’s journey is equally important to arrive at the destination and the right perspective is needed along the journey. As we peruse the scriptures we will note that a Christian’s journey demands conformity to the image of God, which is coupled with suffering. The apostle Paul who was imprisoned several times serves as a riveting example of this fact. His desire to make heaven his home was undergirded with a fervent desire to be conformed to the image of God. Paul embraced the fellowship of suffering in his pursuit to becoming more like Jesus. While we yet abide on to be longsuffering as image of Christ. Let us set before us, enduring

this earthly sod, we need we are conformed to the run with patience the race hardship as good soldiers.
