Pastor’s Greeting It’s my delight to welcome you to our 16th Annual Focus on Jesus Summit. Our theme this year is “Steadfast” as we seek to encourage and strengthen the body of Christ to be “grounded and settled and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel” - Colossians 1:23. We live in an age and culture that make us want to question everything and not believe that truth is immovable. It’s no wonder the Apostle Paul warned us, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable.” (1 Corinthians 15:58) This word STEADFAST is crucial in Scriptures and occurs dozens of times, warning us and encouraging believers to be strong in our faith. We know as Christians we are called to be different from our culture, and it is by standing upon God’s Word that we are strengthened. Our theme this year is reinforced by the symbol of the anchor which calls us in this time to be firmly anchored in the truth of God’s word and be steadfast in faith despite the changing tides around us. Let us be: • Anchored and steadfast in prayer • Anchored and steadfast in faith • Anchored in the apostle’s doctrine • Anchored and steadfast in the storms of life and shifting winds of doctrine

In addition to our nightly sermons and teaching sessions during the day, this year our summit program also includes a special session for the youth, a children’s forum, a multi-cultural worship experience, and a seminar focused on mental health; which is a silent but prevalent issue impacting the body of Christ. We are also blessed with a powerful line-up of speakers and presenters who have been prayerfully selected to lead our various sessions, minister the word and edify us throughout this week. It is our hope that through this conference we will witness the power and presence of the Holy Spirit being demonstrated as we steadfastly adhere to the gospel message and anchor our hope in Christ alone. In His Service, Pastor S. Robert Stewart

STEADFAST IN THE WORD

JUNE

19

2 Tim 3:14-17; 2 Tim 2:15 NATHANIEL URSHAN

7:30PM

In the book of 2 Timothy, we see Paul, a father in the Gospel, exhorting his son Timothy concerning his approach in handling the Word of God and the trust he should have in the sufficiency of scripture. Paul encouraged Timothy to be settled in the Word despite afflictions, which are inevitable in the life of the child of God. He reminded him of the authenticity and potency of the Word which is profitable for instruction in accomplishing God’s purpose. As the presenter explores the topic they will address the following: 1. What does it mean to rightly divide the Word? 2. What does perfection look like as it pertains to being thoroughly furnished unto good works (2 Timothy 3:17)? 3. What impact does matters of the heart have on the Christian who finds it hard to be settled in the Word?

A MOMENT OF IMPACT Ecclesiastes 12:13-14; Ephesians 2:10 BENJAMIN CARTER

JUNE

20

10:00 AM

Mark Twain stated that the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why. God’s purpose was established when we were born. As Christians, we understand that we are called to glorify God; however, we are often unsure of what that looks like. God has a plan for our lives, both as individuals and as a collective body. The 21st century society, however, can easily distract us from fulfilling His purpose. For some of us, it may be a blur as to what God’s purpose is for us here on earth. This session will help us to understand: 1. What glorifying God looks like. 2. God’s purpose. 3. What we should do to ensure we are fulfilling God’s will. 4. How does my vocation or career affect my purpose? 5. How does understanding purpose impact my secular goals?

MENTAL WELLNESS SYMPOSIUM

JUNE

20

11:45 AM

In fulfilling one’s God given purpose, it is important to be healthy spiritually, physically and mentally. In this session, participants will hear from a panel of mental health professionals and minister who will share their personal and professional experiences as to the connection between mental health wellness and achieving our God given purpose. This session will: 1. Educate individuals on mental health and its causes. 2. Discuss the importance of work-life balance and mental health wellness in achieving God’s purpose. 3. Remind attendees that they can live meaningful lives and achieve God’s purpose, despite the many demands of society and church. 4. STEADFAST IN PURPOSE

JUNE

20

I Corinthians 15:58 MYRON WIDEMAN, SR.

7:30 PM

To be steadfast is to be firmly loyal, unwavering, fixed, unchanging, and unmovable; it does not mean to be stagnant. The unmovable aspect of steadfastness relates to the faith and belief in God which is developed by our relationship, knowledge of, and experiences with God. This belief should drive the believer towards the fulfillment of purpose. One should therefore be unwavering or determined in purpose, which is a strong force to propel towards action. Jesus Christ had a purpose worth dying for – the desire to redeem man back to God. Nothing that took place in His earthly ministry distracted Him from fulfilling that purpose. What is it that motivates us? Are we able to identify our purpose? Are we willing to remain committed to the fulfillment of that purpose despite what comes against us? Can we risk aborting our purpose by not being steadfast? This session will help us to understand: 1. What does it mean to be steadfast. 2. The demands and attitude that will foster steadfastness. 3. The reason we should be steadfast. 4. How does being steadfast tie in with purpose. At the end of this session we should: 1. Recommit to the fulfillment of purpose. 2. Realign our actions and goals to God’s purpose for our lives.

THE WINNING CHARACTER

JUNE

21

Daniel 6:3 & 4 DEVON DAWSON

10:00 AM

When people look at you, what do they see? Are you representing God or the world? Today’s “selfie” culture is eating away at our inner character. In this session, we will be exposing the damaging effects of our hunger for attention and status, while using Daniel as an example. Daniel 6:3 & 4 describes Daniel as having an excellent spirit and being faithful. His integrity as a man of God gained him favor with the secular world; however, he refused to compromise his faith in God. Even under the intimidation of kings and rulers, Daniel remained steadfast in his commitment to God. This session will help us to understand: 1. Our identity is found in Christ and not through the validation of others. 2. Under all circumstances we must remain steadfast in character. 3. We are ambassadors for Christ.

CHARACTER BUILDING BLOCKS

JUNE

21

11:45 AM

Romans 5:3 & 4; Romans 8:28 WAYNE WILLIAMS

Romans 8:28 declares, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…” Yet, often times when we respond to adverse circumstances, we disregard this knowledge. As children of God, we should be more aware of these circumstances God allows in order to build character, develop the Fruit of the Spirit and accomplish His purpose for our lives. This session will help us to understand: 1. God is in control even during bad times. 2. How we should respond when faced with adverse circumstances.

STEADFAST IN CHARACTER

JUNE

21

Philippians 2:5; Romans 12:2 NATHANIEL URSHAN

7:30 PM

The child of God must have distinctive attributes that showcase God’s character in them. The Bible implores us to be separate and set apart from the world; however, this does not mean that we avoid human engagement. Our daily disciplines and responses to any circumstance, whether good or bad, must mirror the Godly characteristics taught in the Word of God. During His earthly ministry, Jesus Christ was a living example of how we should live; therefore, as believers, we need to remain steadfast in the pursuit of becoming more like Christ. This session will help us to understand how to display God’s character in everyday life.

THE POWER OF LOVE

JUNE

22

1 John 4:7-8; John 13:35 ROBERT STEWART

10:00 AM

Love is the single most important attribute that a child of God must possess. It is the very essence of God, and His Word clearly states that without it we are nothing. Love is the primary indicator of a disciple of Jesus Christ, as referenced in John 13:35. Too often, our concept of love is limited and our expressions tainted with prejudices; we hold grudges and harbor resentment and unforgiveness. Although it is not easy, the disciple of Jesus must learn to love unconditionally. We must not be quick to condemn our fellow believers when they fall but seek to restore and love them. Our love for God must extend to our fellow man. It is critical for believers to be steadfast in love. This session will help us to understand: • The nature of love. • The power of love.

STAND OUT! Daniel 6:3 & 4 – I Tim 4:12 -16 JESSICA JEFFERSON & SHELDON GUNTER

JUNE

22

11:45 AM When people look at our youth, what do they see? Even more important, how do they see themselves? As young people mature, it is sometimes easy to lose their identity or get lost in the image of someone else. They are often intimidated and overwhelmed with the various distractions and stimulants the world has to offer. At times, their desires and the sources they look to for validation are misguided. This session is designed to exhort our next generation of leaders about their identity in Christ. The presenters will remind them that they were created to be conformed to the image of Christ. Like Paul, who encouraged Timothy, the presenters will provide practical suggestions that will enable them to stand out among the crowd despite their age. This session will equip young people to effectively push against the noise and boldly ‘live out loud’ their purpose in Christ.

LOVE…THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

JUNE

22

11:45 AM

1 Corinthians 13 WAYNE AND ARLENE WILLIAMS

Relationships (family, friendships, and romantic) grow healthier when we understand each other. Everyone experiences love differently and it’s easy to ‘miss the mark’ when it comes to showing that you care. In this interactive session (using assessment tools, role plays and scenarios), attendees will learn practical tools to improve their relationships. This session will help us to understand: 1. Love does not only mean something different to everyone, but it also looks and feels different to everyone. 2. Dr. Gary Chapman’s five love languages: Quality Time, Physical Touch, Gift Giving, Acts of Service, and Words of Affirmation. 3. When we understand people, we are better able to interact and communicate with them.

COUNT THE COST

JUNE

23

Luke 14:26-33; Romans 12:1 MYRON WIDEMAN, SR.

10:00 AM ADULT

It is said that one truly gives when they give of themselves. This is certainly a constant theme in the life of a Christian. In Luke chapter 14 we see Jesus’ appeal to the disciples to count the cost of being a disciple. Paul in Romans 12:1, echoes Jesus’ sentiments when He beseeches us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice. The life of a Christian is not void of sacrifice and following Christ may mean losing relationships, dreams, material things or even our lives. In offering our sacrifice to God we directly and indirectly affect the lives of others. As we explore this topic we will examine the following: 1. What is a sacrifice? 2. What does it mean to count the cost? 3. What does our reasonable service look like? 4. How can we ensure our agenda is in alignment with God’s agenda? 5. What are ways/things we can do to show we are living sacrificially? 6. How does our sacrifice impact those around us?

HEARTBROKEN Romans 12:1-2 ARLENE WILLIAMS

JUNE

23

10:00 AM 18-21 LIFE APP.

In Psalm 51:16-17, David makes it clear that the sacrifice that God requires is no longer that of burnt offering which was related to the law. Instead, what God seeks are spirits that are broken and hearts that are broken and contrite. The individual who is broken before God will recognize their humanity in relation to God’s deity. A contrite heart – one that is penitent and sorrowful for one’s offenses, will be appreciative of redemption. This individual will continually offer the sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving referred to in Psalm 117:17. When one has a broken heart, it is easier to respond positively to the appeal of Romans 12:1-2. Presenting one’s body as a sacrifice is a total commitment. It is giving up one’s will to that of God. It requires an ongoing daily action of submission that leads to transformation. This level of sacrifice is directly connected to fulfilling purpose. It is only by submitting ourselves in obedience to God’s Word and His will that we can be perfectly aligned to our purpose. In this session, the facilitator will lead a

36

discussion to help attendees to better understand: 1. The sacrifice that God desires of us 2. What it means to present our bodies as living sacrifices 3. The steps to transformation 4. The realization that these actions are required on an ongoing basis At the end of this session we should: 1. Yearn to be fully committed 2. Desire to be transformed 3. Commit to an ongoing sacrificial lifestyle

JUNE

23

1 Corinthians 12:14, 18 DONNETTE WALFORD

10:00 AM 14-17

Every member is important in the body of Christ and millennials are no different. They can help to more effectively reach their peers, this requires continuous sacrifice. Our youth must operate with an understanding that sacrificial service is necessary and should always feel empowered to serve in their local church and community. This session will help us to understand: 1. My purpose in the Kingdom? 2. What is a sacrifice? 3. Some of the ways/things that we do which demonstrate sacrificial living? 4. What can I do to help my peers and my community experience the love of Jesus Christ? 5. How can I serve to make my church a better place for members and visitors?

TOTAL SURRENDER

JUNE

23

Romans 12:2 ALLISON TODD

10:00 AM 10-13

Serving the Lord cost something. Jesus paid it all and the least we can do is give our life in service to Him. Pre-teens need to know that the world does not revolve around them and they should not become self-absorbed. The child of God needs to know what it is to be a living sacrifice as the word instructs us to be in Romans 12:2. Grasping the concept is essential in giving our reasonable service to our Lord. This session will help us to understand: 1. How we can sacrifice for God in our everyday life 2. The benefits of sacrifice 3. The importance of sacrificing for God

HE WANTS IT ALL

JUNE

23

Philippians 2:6-8 ALAN TODD

11:15 AM

Christ made the ultimate sacrifice in that He who knew no sin became sin for us. He died the horrible and gruesome death of the cross—a judgement reserved for the vilest of criminals. He gave His all. What about us? What/who are we willing to sacrifice to fulfill God’s agenda for our lives? Surrendering to God’s agenda requires a sacrifice which could include giving our time, resources, reputation, comfort, convenience, and a whole list of other things we hold dear.

A RADICAL APPROACH

JUNE

23

1 Corinthians 9:16-23; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Ephesians 4:13-15 ALAN TODD

7:00 PM

Now more than ever, the church needs to mobilize itself to reach people who desperately need to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. This may require a new approach from the church, but personal sacrifice, of both time and money, will be our greatest test. While maintaining sound doctrine, the church must face the challenge of constantly reevaluating its methods to find new approaches in order to impact our communities and our world. This sermon will help us to understand: 1. The importance of our role in building the Kingdom. 2. The differences between an active and a passive member. 3. Methods the church can use to reevaluate and reinvent itself to meet the needs of the community at this time. 4. How to partner with my local assembly to accomplish God’s purpose in my community.
