SONGS OF ASSURANCE Precious Lord Take My Hand When my way groweth drear Precious Lord, linger near When my light is almost gone Hear my cry, hear my call Hold my hand lest I fall Take my hand, precious Lord Lead me on Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I am tired, I’m weak, I am worn Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand, precious Lord Lead me home

When my work is all done And my race here is run Let me see by the light Thou hast shown That fair city so bright Where the lantern is the light Take my hand, precious Lord Lead me on Precious Lord, take my hand Lead me on, let me stand I am tired, I’m weak, I am worn Through the storm, through the night Lead me on to the light Take my hand, precious Lord Lead me home

It is Well With My Soul When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well, with my soul It is well… With my soul It is well, it is well with my soul Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul

It is well (it is well) With my soul (with my soul) It is well, it is well with my soul My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul It is well (it is well) With my soul (with my soul) It is well, it is well with my soul Repeat

J

oseph McGillvery, affectionately known as “Fortune,” was born on February 13, 1951 in Cariacou, Grenada, to Job Jerome and Clara McGillvery (both deceased). As a boy, Fortune lived with his Auntie Victoria while he attended Hillsborough Government School. After leaving school, he worked as a clerk at the local store. In 1970, Fortune emigrated to Brooklyn, NY, where he lived with his Auntie Bessie and his 3 cousins who were living at home at that time. While in Brooklyn, he worked in a variety of jobs. He demonstrated a talent for working with his hands, and developed a well-deserved reputation and excellence in general contracting skills, but more particularly, in tiling, carpentry, and plumbing. In 1980, while living in East Flatbush, he met Hortense Samuels at an anniversary party and the flame was ignited. They were defined by their friends and family as “The Perfect Match” so much so, that the phrase was also used on their wedding invitation.

They were married in 1982. They were young and in love and wanted to live in the Sunshine State. So in 1987, 33 years ago, they moved to Miami Gardens, Florida and established themselves as solid and dependable members of their local community. They were actively involved in their church, Pentecostal Tabernacle, and were also members of the Penab Crime Watch Team.

Fortune was a quiet, soft-spoken, gentle man who loved solitude and music. While he was always happy to see family and friends, at family gatherings he tended to keep a low profile, preferring to make everybody feel comfortable and well fed from the background. You did not necessarily hear him, but you knew he was there. His calm, reassuring presence was always felt. Fortune loved receiving visitors at his home and always made everybody feel as if they were in their own homes. He loved to cook, when given a chance, because his wife shared his love for cooking and did most of the cooking. Fortune could fry a mean snapper or any kind of fish he got his hands on. He transformed it form the ordinary to the absolutely finger-licking delicious. Joseph McGillvery, affectionately known to all as “Fortune, departed this life peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2020. He is missed by his wife, Hortense, Step-daughter - Paula, 5 grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters, 30 brothers and sisters, countless nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, the church family and friends. He is resting in peace.

MEMORIES

TRIBUTES To Hortense and family, we deeply regret that we are unable to attend Joseph’s home-going service due to this terrible pandemic. Just know that we will be there in spirit. Uncle Fortune as we call him, was a loving and strong man that we will miss deeply. He was an amazing uncle to his niece and nephew, Natalie and Kareem and a supportive and caring brother to his sister-in-law Madge. We were truly blessed to have him in our lives. We will cling to our wonderful memories of him throughout the years. Dear Aunt Hortense, although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer. May there be some comfort in knowing that someone so special will never be forgotten. Love, Madge, Natalie, Kareem, Mark and Nikki (Canada).

Our hearts are saddened by the passing of our Cousin Fortune, but we rejoice because we know that he is no longer in pain and suffering. No one can prepare for the loss of a loved one. However, we take comfort in knowing that he is now resting in the arms of our Almighty God. Cousin Fortune was a loving person, mild mannered, kind, cheerful and quiet at times. He loved the Lord, he loved his family and he loved people. We appreciated all the love, laughter, and service that he extended to our family. We will always cherish the memories of our time spent together when we visited him in Brooklyn and Miami. We will miss him dearly. Rest in peace Cousin Fortune. To his loving wife Hortense, we are sorry for your loss. We admonish you to keep the faith and be strong. You will find comfort in all the wonderful memories he has left behind. We will be praying for you and know that in time, peace, comfort, prayers and warm memories will heal your heart. Our sincere and deepest condolences to you and your family. You are in Our Hearts Always. Cousin Tony, Elsie, Kimberly, Stephanie, Ashley, and Natalie Miller (Georgia).
