Processional & Opening Sentences

Rev. Dr. Donald R. Lawrence

Hymn of Praise: #32 - “Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven” Praise my soul, the King of Heaven; To His feet Thy tribute bring! Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me His praise should sing? Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise the everlasting King! Praise Him for His grace and favor, To our fathers in distress! Praise Him still the same forever, Slow to chide and swift to bless! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Glorious in His faithfulness! Father-like, He tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame He knows. In His hands He gentle bears us Rescues us from all our foes,

Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Widely as His mercy flows! Frail as summer’s flower we flourish: Blows the wing, and it is gone. But while mortal rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise the high eternal One! Angels, help us to adore him; Ye behold Him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before Him; Dwellers all in time and space, Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise with us the God of grace!

Scripture Reading 1Thessalonians 4:13-18 Donna-Marie Solomon (Daughter) Song of Comfort: #62 – “All the Way My Savior Leads Me” All the way my Savior leads me, What I have I to ask beside? Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who through life has been my Guide?

And my soul athirst may be, Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! A spring of joy I see. Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! A spring of joy I see.

Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell! For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well; For I know, whate’er befall me Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me, O the fullness of His love Perfect rest to me is promised In my Father’s house above When my spirit, clothed immortal,

All the way my Savior leads me Cheers each winding path I tread. Gives me grace for every trial, Feeds me with the living Bread. Though my weary steps may falter

Wings its flight to realms of day This my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way. This my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way.

Sermon Rev. Donald R. Lawrence Hymn of Response: #410 – “When Peace Like a River” When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul. Tho’ Satan should buffet, tho’ trials should come, Let his blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin - oh, that bliss of this glorious tho’t, My sin not in part but the whole Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! And, Lord, hast the day when faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descent, “Even so,” it is well with my soul

Prayer of Commendation & Benediction

Rev. Donald Lawrence

Final Instructions Recessional Hymn: #514 – “When We All Get to Heaven” Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy and His grace; In His mansions bright and blessed He’ll prepare for us a place.

Let us then be true and faithful Trusting, serving each day; Just one glimpse of Him in glory Will the tolls of life to repay.

When we all get to heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, We’ll sing and shout the victory!

Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty we’ll behold Soon the pearly gates will open We shall tread the street of gold.

While we walk the pilgrim pathway, Clouds will overspread the sky; But, when trav’ling days are over Not a shadow not a sigh.

Eulogy

Today, we are here to give thanks for the extraordinary life of Leila Elizabeth Philpotts, born on June 1, 1928 in Watt Town, St. Ann, Jamaica to parents Leonora Seivwright and William Lawrence. She was the second of six children, five girls, Vera (deceased), Ivy, Pinkie (deceased), Gwendolyn, and one boy, Cecil (deceased). At an early age, she moved to St. Ann’s Bay to live with her aunt Rachel and attended St. Ann’s Bay Primary School where she enjoyed her studies. Later, she met Waldo Evans. The relationship produced one daughter, Hazel, but due to his passing this relationship was short lived. Sometime later, she met and married Percival Philpotts. This union produced seven children-Maureen, Richard (deceased), Jennifer, Elinor, Stewart, Donna and Susan. Miss Tit and Mass Percy or Missa P as they were affectionately called by the people in the district of Charles Town where they settled, lived a honest, hardworking, dedicated and disciplined life, and set a good example not only for their children, but for all who knew them. She was a strong believer in God, and hence, became a member of the St. Ann’s Bay Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and God was her rock. During the years, she would sometimes be faced with difficult challenges, but it was her faith in God that brought her through. She would say “me put my trust in God” and then she would be heard singing or humming “I must tell Jesus all of my trials, I cannot bear these burdens alone. In my distress, he kindly will help me. He ever loves and cares for his own.” Leila had an eye for beauty, so flower gardening was one of her most cherished hobbies. All around her yard you could witness it. Everything she touched flourished. In addition to flowers she planted herbs such as peppermint, fever grass and others. So if you had a stomach or belly ache just call Miss Tit and she would have a remedy for you. While she beautified the surroundings, she never forgot herself, that included putting on her face cream, and as some of us remember her little red lipstick. Mass Percy in the meantime would plant breadfruit, banana, june plum, while she helped him share with the neighbors. There are many other things that Leila loved to do. Playing active roles in her church and community were two of them. She was a consistent and faithful member of the Women’s Federation. She sang soprano on the church choir and with the St. Ann’s Bay Singers, a group that sang for special occasions such as Easter and Christmas. She performed in some very inspiring, heart searching church plays, roles you would be surprised such a quiet lady could do. She supported the Parent Teacher’s Association of her children’s Primary School. Every year they had a Fair and she took an active role in whatever capacity she was needed – even modeling! In addition to all this, and with the little she had, Miss Tit reached out and helped raise two nephews and two boys from the community. As the song says, “little is much when you place it in the Master’s hand,” and that is what she believed. God gave her the gift for cooking and baking, and oh did she have a passion for it! No wonder she spent her life’s vocation as a cook at the St Ann’s

Bay Hospital. However, cooking and baking for her family gave her the greatest pride and joy. Miss Tit had such love and kindness in her heart, she would always keep an eye out for the needy and underprivileged, and made the effort to cook and feed them. She did this especially during the holidays and festive seasons and it sure made her happy. Even though life was hard at times, she never sat around moaning with her arms folded, but used her time to connect with close and distant family and friends. Her smile was so infectious you could see it all over her body, and that endeared her to so many people. Going to social events made her happy. Leila loved to attend concerts, plays, get togethers, Mother’s Day events, tea parties, and so on. One of her sisters, Ivy, known to all as Darkie, was living in the United States and encouraged Leila to visit, which she did on occasion. Sometime later she transitioned to America and resided in Miami. Relocating here did not change her one bit. The only thing she may have regretted was not learning how to drive. However, with the help of family and good friends, she got around and tried to keep up with most things. While here she had the pleasure of going on cruises and family trips whenever she could. Leila met new friends and neighbors but kept up with her longtime church members, co-workers and associates from Jamaica who were now living here, such as Rev. Samuel Vernon & Mrs. Vernon. In the yard of her last residence, there is a pawpaw (papaya) tree that Leila planted and still shared with neighbors. She was so hospitable that family and friends of her family would always seek the chance to visit or stay with her whenever they were in town. About three years ago, Leila’s health began to decline, and she started needing more attention. She was having more consultant and more doctor visits than before. With all this she kept going until it got to the point where she needed caregiver assistance at home. During this time her children were hoping and praying that somehow God would intervene, and that she would make a turn for the better, because they wanted to take her back to Jamaica in June of 2018 to celebrate her 90th birthday. But God had a different plan. Her health continued on the downward trend and that plan had to be canceled leaving Leila a bit disappointed. She was always in awe of her age and would often say “ninety years I can’t believe it.” She knew she had surpassed the promise of three score years and ten and by reason of strength and God’s grace, a whole score more. Leila lived a long, humble, wonderful, productive life. She actually outlived her husband by nine years and looked younger than she was. On the morning of December 18, 2018, she was listening to one of her favorite hymns Amazing Grace and at the end of it she took her last breath and peacefully slipped away from this life. She is survived by Sisters (Ivy, Gwendolyn); Brother-in-law (Lloyd); Children (Hazel, Maureen, Jennifer, Elinor, Stewart, Donna-Marie, Susan); Sons-in- law (Michael, Roylan); Daughter-in-law (Joy); Grandchildren (Richard, Audley, Steven, Stanhue, Mickel, Rickelle, Ricurt, Kimberly, Jason, Kristen, Justine, Kristoff); Grandson-in-law (Phaion); Grandaughtersin-law (Enesha, Karyl); Great grandchildren (Gabriel, Jaydon, Matthias, James, Luke) and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. May her soul rest in peace.

Graveside HYMNS

WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER When the trumpet to the Lord shall sound And time shall be no more And the morning breaks eternal bring and fair When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore And the rolls is called up yonder, I’ll be there When the roll is called up yonder When the roll is called up yonder When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there On that bright and cloudless morning

when the dead in Christ shall rise And the glory of His resurrection share When His chosen ones are gathered to their home beyond the skies And the roll is call up yonder, I’ll be there Let us Labor for the Master from the dawn ‘til setting sun Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care Then when all of life is over and our work on earth is done And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there

THERE IS A LAND THAT FAIRER THAN DAY There’s a land that is fairer than day, And by faith we can see it afar; For the Father waits over the way To prepare us a dwelling place there.

We shall sing on that beautiful shore The melodious songs of the blessed; And our spirits shall sorrow no more, Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore

To our bountiful Father above, We will offer our tribute of praise For the glorious gift of His love And the blessings that hallow our days.

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and grief to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, Oh, what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer!

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouragedTake it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refugeTake it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou will find a solace there.

May we ever, Lord, be bringing All to Thee in earnest prayer. Soon in glory bright, unclouded, There will be no need for prayerRapture, praise, and endless worship Will be our sweet portion there.

Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear; AMAZING GRACE

Amazing grace how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost but now I’m found Was blind, but now I see ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, Toils and snares We have already come ‘Twas grace that brought us safe thus far And grace will lead us home When we’ve been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We’ll have no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we first begun

HOW GREAT THOU ART

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder Thy power throughout the universe displayed

And when I think of God, His Son not sparing Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin

Then sings my soul, My Savior God to Thee How great Thou art, How great Thou art Then sings my soul, My Savior God to Thee How great Thou art, How great Thou art

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And lead me home, what joy shall fill my heart Then I shall bow with humble adoration And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art
