Death Hath No Terrors…
Dorith Alberta is the third of six children born to Henry and Alimena Stephenson – Blackwood. She came into this world on March 20, 1915 at Culloden, Whitehouse, Westmoreland, Jamaica West Indies. In the early morning of February 25, 2010, less than four weeks short of her 95th birthday she received the call to come up higher. Quietly and unobtrusively, just as she lived, she departed to be with her Savior. Dorith was educated in the Jamaica School system primarily at Culloden All Age School. Her mother died when she was 6 years old. This was a struggle for her and her other siblings in their early years. After finishing school Dorith immersed herself in Arts and Crafts and Sewing. She learned to make various types of baskets and sold them in the market place. Additionally, she learned to sew clothes for herself and for her sisters. At the age of 28, she met and fell in love with a handsome and dashing 34 year old man Beresford Josiah Barrett of Sheffield, Westmoreland. The two of them were married in what could be called an upscale ceremony in those days. There were four sons born to Mother Barrett: Calvin Uriah, Alfred Adolphus, Charles Caswell and Justin Augustus. Mother Barrett loved her children and did everything she could to advance their progress in school. She was very supportive financially and emotionally to her son who went into higher education. She was a great motivator to him as she encouraged him to push ahead and excel in the area of his choice. In the early 1950’s, her husband Beresford, migrated to England and shortly after she joined him. They lived in Wolverhampton, England. Mother Barrett worked as a press operator at Sankey Factory, a place where they made war machinery. Her stay in England was brief, spanning a period of only 4 years and she returned to her beloved Jamaica. Beresford became a farmer while Mother Barrett became a housewife. They forged a life of comfort as their love for each other took them through the good times and the hard times. While they lived in Hanover, Mother Barrett heard the Oneness Apostolic Doctrine. At that time, many of her family members were already converted and baptized in the Oneness Apostolic way. Mother Barrett accepted baptism in the name of Jesus Christ and received the gift of the Holy Ghost under the leadership of Bishop Sydney Alexander Miller who had established a church just a few houses away from where she lived. Her husband also was baptized and received the Holy Ghost. By that time all her
siblings were baptized and three of them had received the Holy Ghost. The pioneer of this family into the true church was her sister the late Mother Ethel Lewis. In addition to her siblings, nieces and nephews, three of her sons were also baptized in Jesus Name. This elicited the comment from their pastor that ‘the family is indeed blessed.’ In 1994 Mother Barrett and her husband migrated to the United States of America to be with their son Charles. Those were some powerful days as Mother Barrett would take her assigned hour in our 24-hour prayer vigil and prayed through sometimes more than her allotted time. She was a very strong prayer warrior during those days in Miami. Unfortunately Mother Barrett did not find the lifestyle in the United States to her liking and asked to be returned to her native island home. This was a painful decision because she could get much more attention and accommodation in the States, but, Miss Dorr, as her husband affectionately called her, prevailed and in 1997 they returned to Jamaica. Mother Barrett’s secret of longevity was not necessarily because of her genetic makeup, but rather in her disciplined nutritional lifestyle. You could literally count on one hand the things that she would eat. Her diet consists primarily of fish, banana, Chocó, dumplings and crackers. The family can tell you that her cooking was clean, in fact we would joke about the lack of hardly any nutrients left after she was finished washing whatever she was cooking. One of the enduring qualities of Mother Barrett was her love of reading. She was a voracious reader and therefore was abreast of world and local news. She would read a newspaper from the beginning to the end. This made her quite knowledgeable of events that were occurring around the world. She read her bible and song books on a daily basis and when asked what her favorite songs were, she would say “all of them.” She had a good soprano voice in her early years and she loved to sing the old hymns of the church. We can recall that her singing was prophetic, signaling the death of someone in the district. When she sang any one of what were considered “funeral songs,” you could be sure that someone in the district would pass away that very day. Mother Barrett reared a number of her nieces and nephews, as they would leave Whitehouse and go to Grange, in Hanover and reside with her for extended periods of time. She also reared some of her grand and great grand children. It is fitting that in her final years of life she was surrounded by children, grand children, great grand children and great, great grandchildren.
Mother Barrett was at peace with all people. She had a firm resolve, but was sincere, quiet and meek, not easily flustered, and very rarely in her life was she in conflict with anyone. Her demeanor was one of gentleness, kindness, love and patience. She loved the Lord with all her heart and served Him with all that she had. This was truly a woman of God and she leaves us with no doubt of her final destination. She made her calling and election sure. She went home to be with the Lord. Mother Barrett leaves to continue her work of loving and caring: Sons: Calvin Uriah, Charles Caswell, and Justin Augustus; she was predeceased by her 2nd son, Alfred Adolphus; Grandsons: Ralston, Trevor, Egbert, Levi, Alton, Ronald, Charles, II; Grand Daughters: Cerise, Elka, Julian, Angela, Tameka, Elise and Nadene; Great Grand Sons: Rollington, Guyando, Carette, Traval, Trevani, Tavaun Rasei, Rakei, Thavi, Prince, Chaver; Great Grand Daughters: Chatana, Princess, Chevene, Anissa, Alyssia, Torian, Chimna, Melonie Tamesha, Tashaun, Trevene, Donaire, Vanessa; Sixteen Great, Great Grand’s; Daughter- in- laws: Mrs. Gloria Mullings of Miami, Florida, Mrs. Iris Spencer; Mrs. May Spencer of Jamaica Nephews: Bishop L.J. Sleep well through the night Mother dear, we will see you in the morning.
I am home in Heaven, dear ones, Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, every restless tossing passed: I am now at peace forever, safely home in Heaven at last. Did you wonder how I so calmly Trod the valley of shade? Oh! But Jesus’ love illumined every dark and fearful glade. And he came himself to meet me in that way so hard to tread. And with Jesus’ arm to lean on, could have no doubt or dread. Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still: Try to look beyond earth’s shadows, Pray to trust our Father’s will. There is work still waiting for you. So you must not idly stand: Do it now, while life remaineth - You shall rest in Jesus’ land when that work is all completed. He will gently call you home: Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come! -Anon Lovingly submitted: The Family

March 9. 2010 Tribute to Mother Dorith Barrett Death comes eventually to us all, yet for the Christian the dark door of death is to be viewed as only a shadow. As frightening as death may appear, on the other side is the bright and shining gate that leads to life eternal with Jesus. Say not it’s a dreadful journey when the Saviour leads the way; it’s but passing of endless day; for the Christian death is the last shadow before heaven’s dawn. Mother Barrett was a true veteran of the gospel of Jesus Christ; never weary of telling someone of the goodness of Jesus. Although a humble soul yet a shining example. “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” “Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the lord, she shall be praised. Truly we can praise Mother Barrett for her steadfastness, her walk in holiness, and her ever abounding in the grace of God. She shows us how to live in the kingdom of God. We have no doubt of her transition into the kingdom of heaven. Sleep on Mother Barrett and take your rest. See you in the rapture someday. From her church family Pastor L.A. Samuels...

While I did not get to know your mother personally, I’m certain that some of the qualities that you exhibit were passed on to you by her. As a result, her spirit will remain alive among us. WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN
Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy and His grace. In the mansions bright and blessed He’ll prepare for us a place. Chorus: When we all get to Heaven, What a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, We’ll sing and shout the victory! While we walk the pilgrim pathway, Clouds will overspread the sky; But when traveling days are over, Not a shadow, not sigh. Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty we’ll behold; Soon the pearly gates will open; We shall tread the streets of gold.
WHEN I MAKE MY LAST MOVE
I’ve been traveling for Jesus so much of my life, I’ve been traveling on Land and on sea; But I’m counting on taking a trip to the sky, That will be the last move…for me. Chorus: When I move to the sky, up to heaven on high, What a wonderful trip That will be! I’m all ready to go, washed in Calvary’s flow; That will be the last move for me. I’ve seen wonderful sights as I traveled afar, But how little how empty Twill seem; When I make my last move to the city of gold, And behold what no vision could dream. There’ll be prophets of yore, whom I’ll meet over there, And whose teaching Have guided me right; I shall meet the apostles and Jesus my Lord, I believe I shall know them at sight. Here I’m bothered with packing each time that I move, And I carry a load In each hand; But I’ll not need one thing I have used in this world, When I move to that heavenly land.
DEATH HATH NO TERRORS
Death hath no terrors for the blood-bought one, O glory hallelujah To the Lamb! The boasted victory of the grave is gone, O glory Hallelujah to the Lamb! Chorus: Jesus rose (Jesus rose) from the dead (from the dead) Rose triumphant as He said, Snatched the victory from the grave, Rose again our souls to save, O glory hallelujah to the Lamb! Our souls die daily to the world and sin, O glory hallelujah To the Lamb! By the Spirit’s power as He dwells within, O glory hallelujah to the Lamb! We seek a city far beyond this vale, O glory hallelujah To the Lamb! Where joys celestial never, never fail, O glory hallelujah to the Lamb! We‘ll rise someday just as our Savior rose, O glory hallelujah To the Lamb! Till the shall death be but a calm repose, O glory hallelujah to the Lamb!
