Northcote is a faraway land in my books… but lately, I’ve been venturing to this neck of the woods because I’ve noticed I’m starting to enjoy this suburb more and more. I struggle with describing the cultural identity and profiles of suburbs, but Northcote’s got a more relaxed vibe compared with the more shi shi neighbourhoods of Collingwood and Fitzroy. Most of us know about Penny Farthing as a brunch spot. They even roast

As you can tell from the places I eat out at (and also blog about), hubby and I are not the type of people who flock to the newest and hottest restaurants as soon as they open. It’s not like we purposely set out not to, but these ‘talk of the town’ places are normally in the city or somewhere else where parking is notoriously difficult. They do make it onto my list of places I want to try, but that list is pretty long! During the dinner service, Izakaya Den has a no bookings policy for groups

ABOUT THE PINK LEOPARD The Pink Leopard is an heroic, moral cat with pink fur and the manners of an English aristocrat. She only becomes flustered or angry at obtuse or offensive humans who try to disrupt her existence, or at troublesome gadgets, rodents, or insects. In most of her life, she stumbles into a difficult situation and stoically endeavours to make the best of it. All the while cooking.

Oh Friends, I’ve had me a dreadful time in the kitchen lately. Away from home and at home too. Maybe I was getting a little cocky with my cooking ability? I mean, I know I can cook but I just don’t plan for unmitigated disasters. Does this happen to you? Anyway, feeling quite stale I went off with my friend Fiona this morning to a little place called Pearl Oyster in Thornbury. There must be new words for vintage and retro that are floating about but I can’t think of any so you will just have to trust me and my photos. The winery is owned by John and Wendy Mitchell, whose love of the vineyards they saw on holiday in Europe compelled them to buy and nourish the Montalto vineyard. The winery does a huge range of wines, with its Montalto Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir winning many awards. As well as wine, the famous olive oils are worth a try.
The terrine was rich and had good flavour. I loved the pistachio butter that was served with it. Both wine matches went really well and I particularly enjoyed the Rosé.
The Flinders lamb was some of the best flavoured lamb I have tasted. The meat was also beautifully tender and I loved the jus and pumpkin mash served with it. After admiring all the sculptures, we were seated at our table where the large glass windows meant we got the last rays of the setting sun. Our waitress explained the menu while also suggesting a cuvee to start. When we made our orders, a side of nice warm bread was served with the Montalto olive oil, which was really good.
