About Libby Margo “Libby is a lover of all things nice (foie gras, truffles and Dr Loosen Riesling) and all things downright nasty (chickenflavoured potato chips, Costco hot dogs and Stella Artois). Sunshine Fresh Food Market (SFFM) has been right there, hidden in plain sight the whole time we’ve been hanging out in Sunshine. As I enter, the feeling and surroundings are so familiar I wonder just why it is we’ve never checked this place out before. For this is our kind of establishment – a cross between a supermarket and fresh produce market along the same lines as Fresh On Young and the nearby Big Fields.

The array of fresh herbs and leafy vegetables is not as swank as that found at Saigon Market in Footscray, but they all look in pretty fine nick. My bunch of goodlooking coriander costs 99c.

Small and often is generally our motto with all sorts of shopping. White sultanas? Why certainly, sir, right this way… I happily scoop about half a kilo into a plastic bag at $8.99 a kilo. The place seems to be fully halal.

I even go “off-list” for a few items – a handful of okra at $4.99 a kilo included. Blimey, I even buy four bananas! They’re tiny specimens, but the price – $6.99 a kilo – is the cheapest I’ve seen this century. Well, that’s how it seems… How good is this – $24.43 for the lot, only falling down on the matter of rolled oats? I get a whole lot of cool stuff to take home for about the price of a moviedrinks-popcorn combo, take much less time and have a lot more fun.

Since moving on from Outpost, Paul Jewson has been a busy man. I’ve seen him in the kitchen at St Ali, he’s been working at St Ali in London and turns out he and his partner Marco Pulagni have been turning the Waldorf in St Kilda into the beautifully rendered Fitzrovia. At 155 Fitzroy St, it’s just near the newly opened Golden Fields, Baker D. Chirico and Miss Jackson in what’s becoming a fine-food hotspot. I’ve long been a fan of Paul Jewson’s food. It ticks all my boxes (I don’t really have boxes to tick), it’s generous, has big flavours and is always seasonal. It’s hard to say what the plan is, but when we dropped in on Sunday the daytime menu was poorly printed on the dodgy computer printer. We were told it was “temporary”, but I’m not so sure it was, not in the sense that it will ever be “fixed” anyway. It was the same at Outpost and the ever-changing menu works perfectly, especially when the food has this sense of style. I just wish they’d get a good printer. The dinner menu, though, is a far more refined affair in presentation and substance. The restaurant comprises two separate areas. At the front, a two level, minimally lit, glass atrium, is perfect for breakfast or brunch and come evening a perfect place for a pre-dinner aperitif or glass of wine. The dining room is a more traditional dining area with a huge open doorway into the kitchen. Currently the walls are sparse, but trimmings are coming and it won’t take much to turn it into an understated, classic dining room. The kitchen itself is somewhat of a feature, it has a huge marble-topped island table crowned by a rustic, hanging pot rack. It doesn’t have the carefully manicured design of Outpost, but it is far more functional and will provide a great vibe on a busy night. The two brunch dishes we had were sticky lamb ribs on a smoked corn salad and scrambled eggs with bacon and tomatoes. The ribs were in the no-forkrequired territory with the sauce overpowering the flavour of the meat. The scrambled eggs were as good as they get, endless folds of soft, rich egg with a tomato chutney with a nicely balanced tang. The chutney was so good that I ended up eating the last of it on toast.

Double JeoparDy Double Jeopardy laws – Good, bad or indifferent? If a person is acquitted or convicted for a criminal offence, should there be laws allowing that person to

Family-owned manufacturers of premium quality antipasti including dried, char-grilled and marinated vegetables and olives, pestos and marinated cheese “From our kitchen to your table”

be retried for the same crime? Currently, in Victoria the law of double jeopardy exists which prevents a person being tried twice for the same offence, however if the Coalition government is committed to its pre-election promises, reform to this 800 year old law is on the way. There are compelling arguments as to why changes would benefit society. Many of us have seen or heard reports discussing the benefits of opening old cases, which have been before the courts. It is arguable that no reasonable person would want to see a murderer or serious offender walk away from a guilty verdict, if new and compelling evidence is produced. Many Australian states have already embraced these reforms, but does such a reform breach a person’s basic human rights? The answer may be found in what constitutes new and compelling evidence, and how far should it go? On what evidence do we as a society consider it fair to retry a person? Most of society would agree if a person commits perjury at the time of the initial trial or bribery this could open the way for a re-trial, but what about new developments in forensic evidence or technology, or evidence that has not yet been tested or invented? Any changes would need to be clear and unambiguous from the outset, in order to protect society’s rights. There are also pragmatic reasons to consider. If cases are re-opened, who makes the final decision as to why? Would it be the Crown Prosecutor, the police, or is there a political influence, which may blur the edges of the separation of powers doctrine, that defines the differences between the law makers and the law enforcers. If an accused person has been acquitted or convicted, should their rights to one trial be denied, does changing the law open the flood gates to ongoing and prolonged re-trials at the cost to the state and society. There are many questions, and at this time very few answers. In a court system already overburdened, should we open the way for further cases to be added to the load. There is no right or wrong answer, either way the rights of the accused or the victim/and or their family will be tested when or if the change to these laws come about. Why not open the forum to public debate, and open discussion. Please send your comments or questions on this or any other legal topic to PO Box 1213,
