Artist Spotlight! About Me and My Painting Style By Gloria Bagley Munson I’m one of those people who believe, “You are never too old.” At age 50, I rode my bicycle across Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam—alone. It took me 6 weeks and was the best vacation ever. https://cgoab.com/glomun I stowed several sheets of sandpaper and a Ziploc bag of color pencils in one of the panniers on my bike. I drew pictures on the sandpaper whenever I could. After the tour, I returned home and the following six years I took care of my mother who was completely dependent on me. I had little time to paint or draw. It made me realize that as I age, need to embrace my dreams and pick them up again as soon as possible. In 2017, I signed up for an artist’s retreat through the SMU in Taos program (continuing ed). I knew absolutely nothing about painting with oils. My previous work had been done with either colored pencils or airbrush. I dutifully purchased all the materials on the list and showed up. The first day, I set up my easel in front of a huge mountain on Ski Valley Road near Taos. Since this was a studio class that recommended experience to join, I decided to fake it. On either side of me, artists were busy making confident strokes. Mine were tiny and timid. My painting was terrible. The second day at Wild Rivers showed improvement. On the third day, I stopped painting what I saw and painted the gorge at Rio Grande as I felt it. I also put down my paint brushes and started using painting knives. It was my turning point and I changed into a passionate painter. Instead of brushes, I continue to use painting knives and spatula blades. II prefer to paint onsite, outside (Plein Air). I also use professional quality full-bodies pant. These allow to me apply thick layers of paint, impasto style. Because of this practice, you will see more depth and detail from a distance than you will close-up. Using knives and spatulas keeps my work free of toxic solvents. I use baby wipes to clean up while I’m painting. As you can see with my art, I embrace color and tend to brighten up Mother Nature in my work. Aa Vincent van Gogh is credited as saying, “Color in a picture is like enthusiasm in life.” Since the pandemic shut-downs began in March 2020, I have completed nearly 200 paintings. Thank you for joining me on my journey to count every heartbeat, make every moment matter and live life to the fullest. Most of all, remember that “You are never too old to chase your dreams,” (Diana Nyad). I hope you enjoy the show.
