PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As I begin my last President’s Message, I don’t wish to dwell on the disappointment of not finishing our club year as planned in May, we will miss our ever popular Style Show, Luncheon and Installation of new Officers, but I wish to celebrate the outstanding and successful year we did have, and take this opportunity to be able to thank my Board publicly. It does take a village and my village of officers are very special. I am thankful for the outstanding fund raising efforts of Janette Skrasek, Barbara Stancill and Karen Bond. PRESIDENT The garage sale last May and the Christmas Auctions both Jackie Blackburn raised record totals for our Club. We had the successful reissue of our Membership Cookbook and the wonderfully entertaining Dinner Theater with the Art’s Council and Karen’s endless list of projects. These ladies made it happen for us. I’m thankful for the hard work of Membership Chair, Marita Jordan. We have 25 new members this year, and the beautiful Membership Tea in early September to thank her for. I am so appreciative of the dependable efforts of Treasurer, Judy Ingram, Secretaries Liz Gomez and Janice Kelly, Historian Janice Pribble, Parliamentarian Betty Hulse and the guidance of Judi Stith. Thanks to Brenda Skinner for providing us with our entertaining programs and doing double duty as Yearbook Chair. The management, organization and maintenance of our building has been the responsibility of Paulette Reid for the last two years. She truly may have one of the largest responsibilities we ask of our officers. What a terrific job she has done. With special thanks to Vivian Vance for the beautiful and delicious luncheons she and her committee have provided for us. Thankful for Cindy Miracle for the management and selection of our Scholarship Winners, under such unusual circumstances. Lastly, but certainly not least, a big thank you to Sara Dedeluk for our outstanding newsletters and the dependably of Cindy Tarrant for keeping our membership informed through her emails. There are Department Chairmen, committee members and our membership of special ladies, everyone is responsible for the success of this Club year. I have received so much support and words of encouragement this year, each word was important to me, I will not forget your kindness. This is such an extraordinary time, we all have so much worry and concern for our family and friends. It is my prayer that everyone will stay safe and healthy and that we will meet together again in September. May God Bless,

Jackie

THANK YOU!

A NOTE FROM PROJECTS CHAIR: KAREN BOND

The Projects Committee has had a very successful year and I would like to thank those that have worked so hard on this committee: Janice Aust, Gayle Brinkman, Becky Garland and Liz Mullen. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank those that stepped up to help: Sandi Morrison. Paulette Reid, Janice Pribble, Jackie Blackburn, Barbara Stancill, Marita Jordan, Nelda Blevins, Brenda Skinner and many others that were not members of the club. Special thanks to Janette Skrasek for allowing me to have the Mrs. Claus Shop at our December meeting and to all that made so many things for our store. Thank you to Sara for always giving us such an amazing newsletter that kept our members up to date on Project happenings. It has been a blessing to work with all of you and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving so much support. The projects that we had were well attended and I think everyone had a fun time, which to me is a great success! If we had not had the support of the wonderful ladies that are in our club, we would not have had this monumental year so thank you. Since we were not able to have our last two events, don’t be surprised if you see them as projects next year, especially the tea, and I hope to have your continued support for another great year. We will continue to sell the cookbooks, from our first project, next year. I pray everyone stays safe and healthy and ready for next year.

A NOTE FROM COMMUNITY OUTREACH DEPARTMENT As our year comes to an early end, we would like to share what the Community Outreach Department has accomplished under the leadership of Judy Love and the hard work of its members. Normally, this information would be shared at our final meeting in May, but due to the unforeseen circumstances that we are now trying to overcome, we will not be able to do that. As the incoming department chair it is my pleasure to share this with all of our club members. Community Outreach was able to raise $1,780 through the Ice Cream Challenge and the wine tasting event. This means we will be able to divide this money ($445 each) among the following local charities: Brighter Tomorrows GP United Charities Children First Lifeline Families Checks were going to be presented to the recipients at our May General Meeting, which unfortunately had to be canceled. Jackie Blackburn, President, is going to have the checks written, and she will mail them with a note from the Woman's Club. This is a significant contribution by the Woman’s Club to our community. Thank you to everyone that has supported this effort, you have made a difference, job well done. As soon as possible, we will have a planning meeting to decide what efforts we will undertake next year. I will contact all of the department members once I am able to schedule this meeting and if anyone would like to be added to the list, please let me know. I look forward to all of us working together to make that difference. I pray that we will all stay safe and healthy. Karen Bond

CONGRATULATIONS!

TO THE WOMAN’S CLUB OF GRAND PRAIRIE 2020 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS OLIVIA GARZA - G.P. FINE ARTS ACADEMY LYDIA H. LEWIS- SOUTH G.P. EARLY COLLEGE H.S ALICIA ZITOUNI- DUBISKI CAREER HIGH SCHOOL OLIVIA GARZA Olivia Garza is an 18-year-old senior at the Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy. She is the daughter of Mario and Lisa Garza. Olivia has a 4.464 GPA and is ranked #2 in her class. Olivia is a National AP scholar, a Texas Music Educators Association All-State Mixed Choir member, and a recipient of the All A’s Award. In addition, Olivia is a member of the National Honor Society, The Texas Future Music Educators Society, Student Council, and the GPFAA Choir. Her volunteer activities include the Grand Prairie coalition dinner as a soloist, a volunteer for Mission Arlington, and a volunteer and participant for the GP Fine Arts showcases including “Hansel and Gretel” and “White Christmas.” When asked about her greatest honor, Olivia said, “My choir is like a second family to me, so when they chose me to lead them in prayer before competitions and events, I was truly honored.” Olivia plans to attend Oklahoma City University and double major in musical theater and vocal performance. Olivia states that her true passion is communication. She states, “Communicating is one of the most special parts of being human. Talking, singing, telling stories, are gifts that are uniquely ours, so I have chosen to spend a lifetime telling people’s stories, sharing meaning through one of life’s most powerful mediums: song.” One of her letters of recommendation states: “Encapsulating all of what Olivia “is” in a letter of recommendation is impossible. She is kind, funny, friendly, hardworking, diligent, loyal, honest, compassionate, and humble. She is an amazing young lady who carries herself with such poise and class. I could not be more excited to see what her future holds.” The Woman’s Club of Grand Prairie is proud to recognize Olivia Garza as a recipient of our 2020 Scholarship. LYDIA H. LEWIS Lydia Lewis is a 17-year-old Senior at the South Grand Prairie Early College High School. She is the daughter of Nigel and Benita Lewis. lence. She is also a Mentor for the Barbara Bush Family Literacy Teen Trendsetter Program. Lydia spent her Junior year of high school as an exchange student in Germany. Lydia states her greatest honor by saying, “My greatest honor was being selected as one of the 50 youth ambassadors in the Southwest region to represent the United States in Germany in the Congress-Bunderstag Youth Exchange program.” Lydia plans to attend Loyola University in Chicago. She states, “This university has a strong neuroscience program as well as opportunities to practice what I’ve learned through research and internships.” Her college English professor states, “Her attention to detail is in keeping with her goal of becoming a neuropsychologist; and this worthy career objective also speaks to her high level of compassion and empathy.” The Woman’s Club of Grand Prairie is proud to recognize Lydia Lewis as a recipient of our 2020 Scholarship. ALICIA ZITOUNI Alicia Zitouni is an 18-year-old Senior at John Dubiski Career High School. She is the daughter of Abdel Zitouni and Nadjia Khier. She has a GPA of 4.439 and is ranked #2 in her class of 400. Alicia is the National Honor Society President, the HOSA Historian. the Dubiski Women’s Alliance President, the Student Council Vice-president, and the Business Professional Association Secretary and the BPA Student of the Year. She has received the Excellence in Piano award since 2015, and has volunteered for the Mother Theresa Food Pantry, Special Olympics, Genesis Women’s Shelter, and Habitat for Humanity. Her answer to “What is the greatest honor you have received?” is: “The greatest honor I have received is being able to be the Dubiski Women’s Alliance President and being able to help empower women within my school and my community.” Alicia plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin in the fall. She states that UT has an amazing neuroscience program and they also have female research groups. “This is important to me because as a woman I feel as if I am not well represented in STEM fields.” Alicia’s paragraph about herself is amazing. Here are her observations: As the daughter of two immigrants from a third world country, there have been many contributing factors that shaped me into the person I am today. Having a mother who has sacrificed everything in order to give me the life she never had the opportunity to have, has encouraged me to excel in everything I put my mind to. In our culture it is not often that the women in the family have higher aspirations than gender norms, such as staying home while the men go out. So when I, an academically accomplished woman and an aspiring neurologist, express this to my family, I am met with speculation and judgment. I want to be able to normalize the stigma, which is why I often participate in rallies and spend copious amounts of time at women shelters. I want to be able to ensure that all women feel comfortable and do what they would like to pursue.” Alicia’s AP Literature teacher highly recommends her by saying, “She is a delight to have in class, not only for the quality of her work, but also for her mature, respectful, and kind nature. Alicia has the intelligence, initiative, and interpersonal skills to take her far in life.” The Woman’s Club of Grand Prairie is proud to recognize Alicia Zitouni as a recipient of our 2020 Scholarship.
