THE CULINARY POET

What immediately catches the eye is the design. Simple, understated and elegant at the same time. A Scandinavian touch? Yes, Finnish. No doubt, it has its very own interesting personal story hidden behind it. We spoke to Thorsten Irgang and Nicole Kindel in Berlin, the owners of Purevolt Yachts, about what makes this yacht so revolutionary.

Thorsten: I’m a water sports lover. On windless days what would bother us, was not only the noise but the exhaust fumes the motorboats would drag behind them. At the Boot Düsseldorf 2019 yacht expo I came into conversation with manufacturer Joakim Hilden from Q Yachts of Finland. They were scouting for a partner in Berlin. A brief conceptual stage and Purevolt Yachts was founded.

What are your backgrounds and what prompted you to go for a rocket start like that? Industrial engineering and marketing is our background. Aside from the sensational design, we were both impressed with the underlying innovation. This electric yacht will appeal to a whole new audience that motorboats may have been inclined to avoid in the past. Technically what is appealing is that as in the case with Tesla, the yacht was conceptualised with an electric drive from the get-go. The Q30’s negligible weight (1600 kg) and the middle-of-the-road width (2.20 m) also ensures greater trailerable ease. As many as 200,000 simulations were carried out to achieve the efficient, energy-saving hull design. The on-board systems are controlled via iPad. There are so many little details that attest to some very clever engineers at work here. Nicole: Marketing a concept like this is of course fun; that makes it particularly appealing.

How do other water sports lovers react to the yacht? It’s hard to believe how quietly the Q30 glides across the water. It’s only in the real-life test that it comes into its own; never before has the sailing boat fraternity given us the thumbs up when we pass them.

So what has the Q30 got to offer? As a 30-footer (9m32) its design is ultra-spacious for eight persons. It comprises a seating area for dining, while the double couch in the stern comes with an uninterrupted view across the aft. Concealed beneath the foredeck is a surprisingly large cabin with panoramic glass dome, which makes for very spacious overnight accommodation for two people on the day cruiser. Nicole: Women especially will be impressed by the electric toilet flushing system and the shower in the stern for freshening up after swimming or sunbathing.

What about the operating costs and range it can travel? Filling up once equals 30 kW and will cost you around 9 euros. With it the yacht can cover up to 100 km travelling at six to seven knots. And it’s essentially maintenance-free.

What about the aesthetical aspect? The sensational design definitely adds to the feel-good factor and has heads turning – the all-round lighting effect is adding extra emotions!
