Annie’s Mailbox

C

orrections 修正 4. it was raining outside

1. like 的用法 like +

to + V. { N./V-ing

• It’s really cold outside.

• Gina doesn’t like chocolate.

• It is very warm inside.

• I like to sleep late on Sundays.

5. on the sofa

• Sandy doesn’t like arguing.

Rainy days are wet and cold, so I don’t like rainy days.

• Darren is waiting, so we should hurry up.

• Maggie is studying, so don’t be too loud.

3. one day vs. some day

• The dog is sleeping on the sofa.

• I’m tired, so I want to stay in bed.

6. finally vs. last finally (adv.)

last (adv.)

• Finally, I decided to

• Harry came out of the

go home.

3 7

some day

7 3

文中為過去式,故用 one day 而非 some day。

• One day, there was a big fire.

• Some day, I’m going to become a baseball player.

classroom last.

Planet Carnivore:

Icebear

Svalbard is a group of arctic* islands. In the winter, temperatures drop to 50 degrees below zero. It is one of the coldest and most dangerous places in the world. However, all kinds of animals live here. There are seals, reindeer, foxes and birds. The biggest hunter in this land is the polar bear. During the winters, polar bears in Svalbard cannot hunt. It is too cold. The bears must eat as much as they can before the winter starts. If they store1 enough fat, they won’t have to eat during the coldest months. When spring finally comes, the bears will start to look for food.

54

Polar bears hunt seals. They wait near the spots where seals hunt fish. When a seal comes up to breathe, the bear attacks2 it. An adult bear may eat 20 seals in two months. But nowadays, hunting is getting harder and harder. Rising temperatures are melting3 the ice, and there are fewer seals in Svalbard. In order to4 survive, the bears must search elsewhere5 for food. Some of them will get lucky and find enough to eat. Others will die. If the climate continues to change, the animals of Svalbard will eventually6 disappear.
