1 when I grow up

3 read vs. study

The kid/lion/tree is growing.「那個小孩/那頭獅子/那棵樹正在長高長壯」。

• Doris only reads scary novels.

• After Lance grew up, he married Amanda. • Terry grew 10 centimeters last year.

• Barry wants to study biology.

much, too.

• I’m happy because tomorrow is Saturday. • Christine forgot to lock the door, so she went

back home.

中文雖然說「非 常喜歡……」,但英文中沒有 very like + N. 的說法,要以 like + N. + very much 表達才正確。 • Philip loves his wife very much. v.

• Diana’s birthday is coming, so we should buy

• The river is very wide. adj.

• Gavin speaks very quickly. adv.

• Many people like this beach because it’s clean

and pretty.

5 I should be earnest about my Korean.

honest [ `3n6st ]

Bob Blumer, host of TLC’s new series* World’s Weirdest Restaurants, takes a wild ride around the globe 2 to find the wackiest,* craziest and downright* strangest places to grab a bite.3 His first stop is a restaurant in Taipei called Modern Toilet. At Modern Toilet, the food isn’t served on plates. It’s served in toilet bowls! There are also toilets on the walls, and customers sit on toilets. Modern Toilet isn’t the world’s only weird restaurant. There are places around the world that have unusual styles. In the U.S.A., you can visit Voodoo* Donut. This restaurant might have the largest variety of 4 donuts in the world. They don’t just sell chocolate and strawberry donuts. Here, you can get a donut with bacon5 on it, or even one that’s bigger than your head. The next restaurant isn’t weird, but it’s pretty cool. ‘S Baggers in Germany doesn’t have waiters or waitresses. You order your food on a screen. When your food’s ready, it slides to you on a small track.6 There are tracks everywhere. In total, ‘S Baggers has over 500 meters of tracks. Look around your neighborhood and see what kind of weird restaurants are nearby. Pretty soon, you might be eating something in a toilet bowl.

Shu-Te Home Economics and Commercial High School is southern Taiwan’s foremost vocational and technical institution. We believe that international cultural exchanges provide the most rewarding of experiences and are a dream come true for teachers and students alike. Whether engaged in the performing arts or regular study, students have all made their presence felt on the campuses of our sister schools in Portland (USA), Vancouver (Canada), and Canberra (Australia), as well as cities in Germany, Japan, and South Korea. They have even performed at international events across the strait in mainland China. Such is a testament to the strong emphasis that Shu-Te places on English education. It is our fervent desire that our students be able to express themselves fluently in English and create exchanges and contacts with their counterparts around the world.

likewise find their foundation in vocabulary. As research indicates, there is a direct relationship between increased English vocabulary and enhanced reading ability. Memorizing vocabulary words is, moreover, one the most difficult tasks for students, and teaching vocabulary in turn represents a great challenge for teachers. Shu-Te students’ scores on basic competency exams are lower than those of public school students, and their English ability lags even farther behind. How to allow low and intermediate level vocational high school students to regain self-confidence and quickly improve their English ability in three years of high school has become an all-important topic for teachers.

Shu-Te’s English teaching guidelines place strong emphasis on building English vocabulary. In 2011, in a nationwide English vocabulary competition, ShuTe’s regular and vocational high school students were crowned champions in both the individual and group categories. In 2012, they won the championship again in the group category and third prize in the individual category among regular high school teams. Furthermore, passing rates on English proficiency tests,

including the TOEIC, the TOEFL and all levels of the GEPT exam, have dramatically risen as students have been able to make structured and steady progress towards their testing goals. Shu-Te also stresses the importance of everyday learning. During the morning self-study period, all students listen to English learning broadcasts, such as those produced by LiveABC. We also employ foreign teachers and have designed facilities that allow for full immersion in an all-English learning environment. In order to extend classroom practice and increase learning efficiency, we also provide a multi-layered curriculum, allow students to explore a wide of range of fields, and encourage active participation in various English competitions and performances both on and off campus. In doing this, we endeavor not only to increase students’ English ability, but also foster self-confidence, instill good manners, and inculcate the importance of humility in victory and gracefulness in defeat.

Popu Lady is a music group formed by five girls. Their name comes from the word “popular” because their goal is to be as popular as possible. The girls of Popu Lady try very hard to get along with each other. They live together and spend as much time as they can together. Once a month, they have a meeting. This is a time for them to talk about problems or things that are bothering them. They end every meeting with a big hug. Their philosophy is “tolerate* one another, don’t measure* yourself against others, and always be grateful.” This is how they get along and keep their relationships strong. These girls think that they are no different from other female groups. Just like other performers, they work hard and do their best to pursue* their dreams. Therefore, they don’t mind when fans compare them to other groups. In their opinion, releasing an album is already a dream come true.
