READING & WRITING

The Tale of

I want to be a famous singer like him, but it’s not easy to be know about famous. If you want everybody to know you, you must work hard. I’m willing to do that, because I want to be famous. My father told working * me “No pain, no gain.” I’ll keep work until I become a famous man.

Jimmy

idol [ `a6dy ] n. No pain, no gain. [ pen ] [ gen ] 18

Annie’s Mailbox

Many people dream of being famous.。 • Kyle dreamed of being a pitcher for the Yankees. • Maria dreams of going to the moon someday.

If + S. + were/V-ed..., S + would/could/might/should + V.。 • If I lived in this city, I would eat at this restaurant

all the time.

• If Rachel were rich, she could travel around the

world.

4 know about (sb) know(know [ no ]-knew [ nju ]-known [ non ]) 是動詞 「知道;認識」的意思,know (sb) 表示「(實際上)認識 (某人)」。 • A lot of people love that actress, but Bob doesn’t know about her. • I know Allen very well.

I’ll keep working until I become a famous man. • I hope that it won’t keep raining. • Cecilia just finished talking on the phone with

her boyfriend. • Paul enjoys playing hide-and-seek with his

friends.

3 everyone vs. every one everyone 和 every one 看似相近,但意思不同,用法也 不一樣,很容易誤用,說明如下: 當我們說 everyone 時,意思雖然是「每個人」,但其實泛 指的是群體的概念,也就是「所有人;大家」,例如: • How could you tell everyone my secret? 然而,everyone 拆開成 every one 時,則特別強調群體 中的「每個人」或「每個事物」,相當於 each one「每一個」 的概念,例如: • These doughnuts look great. I want to eat every

one.

Every year, the sun causes1 our planet’s seasons to change. The sun changes winter into spring, spring into summer, and so on. These changes affect the lives of all animals in Southern Africa’s Kalahari Desert. When the Kalahari’s dry season comes, the rain stops. There is almost no water for eight months. All of the Kalahari’s animals have the same goal during this difficult time. They must find water. Elephants are experts2 at finding water. Buffalo3 often follow elephant herds,4 because they know that sooner or later,5 they’ll find water. When the elephants find one of the precious pools, they finally get to drink. Many other animals come to these pools during the dry season. The pools also attract6 zebras, eagles, and more. Other animals, like lions, come to the pools not only to drink but also to hunt. The pools are dangerous, but the animals have no choice. If they don’t drink, they will die. After eight months, the Okavango River overflows.* Water covers huge parts of the Kalahari. Grass grows in the desert. Animals can finally drink and keep cool. The weather has changed, and some animals have survived another dry season in the Kalahari.
