GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE
s we reflect on the accomplishments of our Association over the last nine months (and there are many…), my thoughts are immediately drawn to our 60th Anniversary Celebration. What an honor and privilege it was to be able to participate as the Master of Ceremony for the evening. To be able to celebrate with you - my fellow builders, associates, friends, and family, was the highlight of my term as President of our great association. Celebrating 60 years is a major milestone for any organization. There are very few builders’ associations across the country that can claim such landmark anniversaries. Our guest speaker for the evening was Randy Noel who, in just a few short months, will be our 2018 NAHB Chairman of the Board. We also heard from NC House Majority Whip, Representative Jon Hardister, who presented a commemorative plaque along with a state flag that was flown over our capital earlier this year. The meal was punctuated by a stunning 60th Anniversary Diamond cake which would have rivaled the most professionally crafted cakes you see on the Food Network. The dinner was concluded with a fitting toast by our immediate Past President Phil Warrick. And our celebration ended with great entertainment by the band Liquid Pleasure. On a historical note, we must give credit to the pioneers who had a vision to create an association that would form a cohesive bond amongst the building community in the Greensboro area to promote professionalism and higher ethical standards. Among other industry leaders in 1957, Eugene Gulledge was the primary driving force behind the creation of the Greensboro Builders Association. He not only championed the creation of our association, but went on to serve as the president of both the NC Home Builders Association as well as the National Association of Home Builders. For this reason, his name is attached to the highest honor we present each year – the Eugene Gulledge Award – given to a member who displays a long-standing contribution to our Association, our industry, and our community. But we are not finished yet! We have many more great events coming up in the remainder of 2017. There are too many to name here so please see our Upcoming Events section later in the publication; however, I MUST bring to your attention the Raising Roofs – Builders for Habitat event to be held during the first week of November. We will be building five houses during this week with the fifth house bringing our grand total to sixty homes built in our 60th year as an association. What a special week that will be to contribute to the well-being of five families who will be able to receive safe, affordable, and energy-efficient housing! In closing, I would like to congratulation our Golf Committee for yet another extremely successful Fall Golf Tournament. Also, I would like to thank the 60th Anniversary Celebration Planning Committee, as well as Cheryl and her amazing staff, on a phenomenal evening at Starmount Country Club. Finally, I would like to welcome Mark Disney as our incoming 2018 President. Mark is one of our Young Professionals who will carry on the legacy of our association with class, character, and charisma. I look forward to serving with him in the upcoming year.

he Greensboro Builders Association and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro are teaming up the week of October 28 – November 3 to construct 5 houses in one week at Asher Downs… celebrating our 8th build since our inaugural build in 2003 in which we constructed 12 homes in one week. To date we have provided 55 NEW homes for families through our partnership along with 3 home renovations…and look forward to building five more homes this fall.
Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat brings builders, remodelers, suppliers and trade contractors together to work side by side to build houses from foundation to dedication in one incredible week. Twenty builders have volunteered to work in teams to construct the houses which will be built to both Energy Star and the National Green Building Standard certifications. Habitat homes are simple, decent and affordable houses sold to hardworking families at no-profit and with interest-free financing. In addition to a modest down payment, families contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” toward the purchase of their home. For Raising Roofs homes, families are volunteering on other construction projects to achieve their required hours. We would like to thank everyone who is helping to make this year’s build happen… from our builders, suppliers and trade contractors who are providing materials and labor for the homes…to the vendors and volunteers who are helping with logistics and hospitality…to our financial contributors. We would especially like to thank the Habitat Greensboro staff for their tremendous efforts to ensure all aspects of the build are coordinated…as well as the City of Greensboro Inspections Department who will be working with us to provide prompt inspections as needed. It’s going to be a GREAT week…and we encourage you to join our efforts. If you would like to provide donated materials and/or labor…or volunteer during the week…contact Mavis Holcombe at (336) 706-6942. Financial contributions are needed and greatly appreciated to pay for materials, labor and other construction expenses. You can make a donation online at Habitat Greensboro’s website - www.habitatgreensboro.org - designated for Raising Roofs - or you can bring a check to the GBA office. There are also sponsorship opportunities to provide meals each day for all the volunteers working onsite. Plans are underway for a Construction Careers Day on Tuesday, October 31 onsite. We will be dedicating the homes on Friday, November 3 at 4 pm and invite you to join us. Watch our website and social media pages for additional updates and photos!
