Giving back to the community has always been a core value for our Association and members. As part of our ReBuilding Hope community service project with Community Housing Solutions, renovation is underway on a home severely damaged by the tornado that impacted eastern Greensboro in April. Our homeowner is a widow who has lived in this home for more than 30 years. She is so appreciative of our efforts. I encourage you to join us in helping her get back in her home before the holidays. We need both skilled and non-skilled labor as well as materials. Learn more about how you can help with ReBuilding Hope as well as our efforts to support victims in the eastern part of our state affected by Hurricane Florence. Special thanks to GBA member Jay Gaffney with Windsor Homes for spearheading a major donation drive immediately after the hurricane, sending much needed supplies to areas still impacted by unprecedented flooding. NCHBA has started a Disaster Recovery Fund soliciting funds to assist industry members impacted by the storm. November 6 is Election Day…and we encourage you to VOTE…as we need to support and elect candidates that understand and are supportive of our industry. If you are interested in meeting candidates prior to the election, plan to attend TREBIC’s annual Pig Poultry Politics networking event on October 11. You can find information on upcoming events and membership meetings in this issue and our website. Ferguson is hosting Oktoberfest on October 18 with food & beer trucks…with all proceeds to benefit our construction careers initiatives. Our Holiday Party will be held on December 6…in which we will be installing our 2019 Board of Directors.

State Directors

As many of you know, GBA member Phil Warrick will be serving as our 2109 NCHBA President. NCHBA committee meetings will be held in Greensboro on December 4, with Phil being installed that evening. Join us in celebrating and congratulating Phil on this honor.

National Directors

As I close out my year serving as your president, it has been both a rewarding and valuable experience. I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this leadership role and look forward to great things occurring in 2019 under Joan Swift’s leadership as our president. I would like to personally thank each of you for your support and encouragement throughout the year.

ReBuilding Hope Tornado Renovation Underway

O

n Sunday afternoon, April 15, a tornado with 135 mph winds killed one person and caused significant destruction to more than 1,000 homes, businesses and schools in eastern Greensboro. Overall, there was more than $48 million worth of damage done to residential, commercial and institutional structures. About $30 million of that was damage done to residential structures, leaving more than 150 homes needing major repairs. As part of this year’s ReBuilding Hope community service project, we are renovating one of these owner-occupied homes that suffered major damage on S. English Street. Working with Community Housing Solutions, our goal is to begin renovations in early October, completing the home before the holidays. The scope of work includes repairing 1/3 of the roof that was destroyed along with two exterior walls torn off. We will be restoring two bedrooms, one bath and the kitchen. In addition, b uild ing a d eck an d landscaping. We had the opportunity to meet our homeowner and view the devastation of her home. Mrs. Long has not been able to live in her house since April. As she shared with us, this has been their home for more than 30 years, raising her family here.

4

GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE

She lost so much of her personal belongings however remains so thankful for surviving the tornado. She is extremely grateful for the help our members will be providing, allowing her to get back into her home. There are numerous opportunities to participate as we need both skilled and non-skilled labor. Several builders have already volunteered to get the project started by helping with the roof and wall framing. We encourage you to sign up to help with this renovation regardless of your level of skills or experience as there are jobs that everyone can help with. It’s a great opportunity for individuals and co-workers / teams to participate together… working alongside other industry members…giving back to the community.

Materials Needed If you would like to help us by donating or providing discounts on materials for this renovation, our needs include: framing lumber, windows, shingles, siding, gutters, insulation, plumbing fixtures, kitchen cabinets, countertops, lighting, HVAC system, sheetrock, interior trim, paint, carpet, flooring for the kitchen & bathroom, along with landscaping supplies. We’re Renovating the Office 2018

SPONSOR CLUB DIAMOND

O

ur Association office – located at 115 S. Westgate Drive – was built in 1996. We did some interior renovations ten years ago…and it’s time to do the same again along with some general maintenance issues. Our Building & Grounds Committee is in the process of completing a thorough assessment of the building, including an energy assessment, with the help of several members who have volunteered their time to assist in evaluating the building. Initial recommendations include replacing the roof; replacing attic ductwork and insulation (damaged by raccoons that visited); improving drainage around the building; adjusting waterproofing in some areas; installing a closed crawlspace; resealing the parking lot; along with landscaping. As we look at interior renovations, we are focusing primarily on our meeting rooms and common space within the building. Recommendations include replacement of carpet and tile flooring; light fixtures; updating bathrooms; painting; meeting room furniture; and kitchen appliances.
