GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE
We are excited to be working with Junior Achievement as an industry sponsor of a Construction Academy for 8th graders, introducing construction trades to more than 500 students on March 13. We are also in the process of planning field trips this spring for high school students to area job sites. If you would like to join our efforts…please let us know.
Membership Growth & Engagement
As a trade association we want to grow and expand…sharing information with others in the building industry. We all work with companies that are not members that could benefit from the many services we provide…from marketing to educational and networking opportunities…as well as advocacy and community service. But we have to share information about GBA and ask them to join! I encourage you to personally get involved this year…to help us grow by inviting industry colleagues to attend events as well as ask them to join our Association. New this year we are hosting some informal breakfast and lunch gatherings as a way to get to know others. Utilize the GBA website and our Facebook page to stay abreast of upcoming membership meetings, council meetings and special events such as golf and skeet tournaments. Our first membership meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, February 22 from 4-7 pm featuring Greensboro and High Point economic developers to share information on how Guilford County is positioned for growth. We will also present our annual awards, recognizing members for their contribution to our Association and community. I hope to see you there. We are only as strong as our members…therefore we need your input…your involvement and participation. As our industry continues to rebound from the great recession…let’s work together to also grow our Association and promote our industry within the community.
Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat Celebrating 60 Homes…During our 60th Anniversary! Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat brings builders, remodelers, suppliers and trade contractors together to work side by side to build houses from foundation to dedication in one incredible week. Nineteen builders volunteered to work in teams to construct the houses which were built to both Energy Star and the National Green Building Standard certifications. We would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s build so successful. We would especially like to recognize the Habitat Greensboro staff for their tremendous efforts to ensure all aspects of the build were coordinated…as well as the City of Greensboro Inspections Department working with us to provide prompt inspections as needed. October 28 – November 3...we did it again...we built 5 houses in one week at Asher Downs…celebrating our 8th build since our inaugural build in 2003 in which we constructed 12 homes in one week. To date...GBA members have NOW built 60 NEW homes for families through our partnership with Habitat Greensboro...along with 3 home renovations.
It was another GREAT Raising Roofs week, highlighted by the dedication of the homes on Friday, November 3 to five hard-working families. Together we’re building more than homes...we’re building communities!
Construction Careers Day New this year, we hosted a Construction Careers Day on Tuesday, October 31 in which carpentry, electrical and HVAC students from Guilford County Schools were onsite to observe and talk with builders and trade contractors to learn more about career opportunities in construction. Members of our Construction Careers committee shared information and answered questions the students had, before taking a tour of the homes under construction. The students were able to hear personal stories from builders, remodelers, suppliers, trade contractors, and code officials. Each shared how they either started or ended up in the industry and what they feel is most important to be successful today, including having a strong work ethic. Discussion focused on the various options available from on-the-job training… to internships and apprenticeships…to high school and
community college courses that will help them find a career path in construction. Planning is underway for future jobsite visits to give the students more direct hands-on experience as they continue to explore construction as a career path…as well as industry members participating in classroom discussions.
