GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE

I

t’s an honor to be elected to serve as your President this year. Our Association continues to grow and provide beneficial programs and services for our members and our community. We look forward to continuing that tradition this year with your help and participation. Construction Careers It is critical that we continue our focus as an industry promoting and encouraging both students and adults to pursue careers in construction related fields. Working with Guilford County Schools, GTCC, Junior Achievement, Guilford County Workforce Development Board, and others...we need to explore innovative ways to attract and train skilled labor. Will Yearns and Pete Vitola will continue to lead our efforts on this workforce development initiative and welcome your involvement. Community Service Giving back to the community is an integral part of our DNA. We just completed a home renovation with Community Housing Solutions as part of our ReBuilding Hope project with tremendous participation from our members. 2019 is a Raising Roofs… Builders for Habitat year with plans to construct five homes in November. John Hodgin will lead this initiative for us. NEW this year, Habitat is conducting a Women Build…with a home being funded and built by all women May - September. We are forming a GBA Team to help with this build. Find additional information on the GBA website for ways to make a financial contribution and/or volunteer to help with our construction team. Membership We all work with companies that are not members that could benefit from the many services we provide…from networking and marketing to education and advocacy. Tom Hall and Scott Allred will continue to lead our membership initiatives and encourage you to invite prospective members to attend an upcoming event. Our Annual Awards membership meeting will be held on Thursday, March 7 from 4-7 pm. Tammie Smoot with BDX will share insights into marketing to today’s home buyers. We will present our annual awards, recognizing members for their contribution to our Association and community, followed by a networking reception. Our next New Member After Hours will be held on March 19 at World of Beer…come join us and invite an industry colleague to attend with you. This event is designed for new as well as veteran members. It’s an informal and casual networking event. For our Under 40 members…our Young Professionals group is planning monthly outings on the 4th Wednesday of the month…spearheaded by Nadine Khazzaka and Ben Grant. These are just a few of the various involvement opportunities throughout the year to take advantage of to help expand your company’s recognition as well as gain new business contacts. Utilize the GBA website along with our Facebook page to stay abreast of events and activities including membership meetings and networking events, council meetings and educational programs, as well as membership outings such as skeet and golf tournaments. Members like to do business with people they know…therefore plan to find your connection point within the Association.

ReBuilding Hope Giving Back to Our Community back into her newly renovated home for the holidays. GBA members stepped up…going over and beyond the call of duty when asked to help Mrs. Long…from donating materials as well as providing labor for the renovations. The split-level home was basically rebuilt on the main level…redesigning the kitchen to allow more functional space….refinishing existing hardwood floors found under the carpet…the addition of an aging-inplace walk-in shower in the bathroom. All new appliances were donated for the kitchen. The installation of a new HVAC unit…replacement windows… and air sealing the home has allowed Mrs. Long to already feel the difference of an energy efficient home.

O

n Sunday afternoon, April 15, 2018, a tornado with 135 mph winds killed one person and caused significant destruction to more than 1,000 homes, businesses and schools in eastern Greensboro. Once assessments were complete and home owners were identified with the greatest needs, partnering with Community Housing Solutions as part of our ReBuilding Hope community service project, we began renovations on one of the owner-occupied homes that suffered extensive damage in October. The scope of work on the South English Street house included repairing 1/3 of the roof that was destroyed along with two exterior walls torn off. Two bedrooms, one bath and the kitchen were restored, along with the addition of a deck.

As an Association, we can’t thank you enough for the ways you answered the call to help Mrs. Long get back into her home….from giving of your time as well as your financial resources. Volunteers showed up to help during the week as well as a Saturday workday in November. GBA members are known for giving back to the community in so many ways…this being just one more example. In addition, special thanks to Jim Sandknop with Community Housing Solutions for his leadership and coordination of this project. Jim made sure everyone had what they needed when onsite to help with the renovation. He was the glue to the success of this initiative.

Our homeowner, Mrs. Emma Long was unable to live in her home following the tornado in April. As she shared with us, this has been their home for more than 30 years, raising her family there. She lost almost all of her personal belongings however remains so thankful for surviving the tornado. She is extremely grateful for the help our members provided, allowing her to get GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE

2018 Year-in-Review T

hanks to everyone for your involvement and participation this past year to help us continue to grow and improve our Association. We had several new initiatives that were successful which we hope to build on this year. We encourage you to find an area and get involved in 2019.

Construction Careers With the growing need for labor resources, we continue to work to form partnerships with community and industry organizations exploring ways to increase workforce development initiatives. We formed a partnership with Junior Achievement to host a Construction Academy for 500 eight grade students in March. In November, working with Guilford County Schools and Junior Achievement, our members participated in Discover Your WoW (World of Work) in which more than 5,500 eight grade students were given a day to explore various careers, including construction. In the spring, we sponsored eight Weaver Academy high school students to participate in the NC Skills USA competition, as well as conducted a Reverse Raffle with proceeds supporting construction careers. We encourage you to get involved with our Construction Careers committee…helping us build greater awareness of the variety of career opportunities in construction.

Community Service Working with Community Housing Solutions, we completed a major renovation on a home severely damaged by the April tornado in Greensboro as part of our ReBuilding Hope project. Members gave generously of their time and resources to rebuild and restore this home. In addition, we participated in Hurricane Florence Disaster Relief, with members donating supplies that were delivered to the eastern part of the state. Throughout the year, we collected food for A Simple Gesture, supporting area food pantries. Networking & Marketing Throughout the year there were numerous membership events including our Annual Awards meeting; SpringFest; 60th Parade Celebration; Housing Forecast featuring Edsel Charles; Oktoberfest; and our annual Holiday Party. In addition, we held successful spring and fall Golf and Skeet tournaments. Our New Members After Hours provided an opportunity for new as well as veteran members to mix and mingle in a casual atmosphere. 10

GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE

Membership Affiliate membership continues to grow, allowing employees to receive direct benefits of Association membership. All members are encouraged to enroll at least one employee as an Affiliate member.

Education GBA Remodelers, Builders, Sales & Marketing, Aging-inPlace, and Green Building councils provided a variety of educational programs for all GBA members, including the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) courses. We hosted Energy and Building Code Updates, as well as the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors for updates on licensing requirements.

Advocacy Through our local, state and national government affairs partners – TREBIC, NCHBA & NAHB – we continue to advocate for regulatory reforms that impact the building industry. NCHBA was successful in securing additional clarifications and changes to the Sales Tax on Labor law.

Consumer Home Tours We celebrated our 60th Parade of Homes in 2018! Our spring and fall Parade along with our Tour of Remodeled Homes continue to provide consumers opportunities to meet industry members; showcasing the latest in new construction, professional remodeling and industry products and services.
