GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE
H
appy Summer! I hope everyone is having a great summer thus far and finding some time away from work to relax and enjoy with family and friends.
Although I know what a challenge that can be…especially with current demands to complete projects and the growing labor shortage we are experiencing. It can be equally hard to commit time to attend membership events and/or volunteer within our Association. However to address some of our key industry challenges, we need both your input and participation. Workforce Development remains a major priority for our industry and Association. It affects all of us…from general contractors to trade contractors, suppliers and service providers. We must find new ways to encourage students and young adults to explore careers in the construction industry. Currently we are looking for industry members willing to give a few hours to visit high school and/or community college classrooms and talk with students about our industry…what is expected and required…along with employment opportunities upon graduation. If you would be willing to help, let us know. Membership in our Association offers many benefits which vary in interest and importance for our members. What’s most valuable to you? Networking, marketing, educational programs, developing new business contacts, advocacy, discounts and savings, insurance, professional credibility, giving back to our industry and/or community. We need to share our stories and the various benefits of membership with others to grow as an association. Join us as we promote the value of Doing Business with Members with a new social media campaign which will spotlight your company along with what you value most about your GBA membership. Community Service remains an integral part of our Association’s DNA with our membership giving back to the community in a variety of ways. This year is no different as we have several initiatives underway. Working with Habitat Greensboro, we have GBA women participating on Habitat’s Women Build on August 7. And our builder teams along with suppliers and trade contractors are gearing up for Raising Roofs… Builders for Habitat one-week build to be held October 26-November 1. Both of these are great opportunities to get involved, giving back to the community, while building relationships with other members as you work side by side on a jobsite. New this summer, our Young Professionals group is sponsoring a School Supply Drive to benefit Guilford County educators. ALL GBA members are encouraged to participate by bringing school supplies to the GBA office or attend the YP Summer After Hours on August 14. Our Tour of Remodeled Homes will be held August 10-11. Don’t miss this opportunity to see these professionally remodeled homes! Special thanks to our remodelers and sponsors for making this event possible. There are numerous upcoming events this fall in which you can find more details on our website. Make sure you are following our social media pages - Greensboro Builders Association and GBA members on Facebook; Greensboro Builders on Instagram & Twitter. Hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming meetings or events.

T
he Construction Careers / Workforce Development task force was created to assess, evaluate and address the ever growing labor problem. We have held several meeting with contractors, suppliers, trade contractors, Guilford County Schools, GTCC, and other workforce development leaders in our area to assess the problem. Two overarching problems have been identified. Perception and Connection. Perception will take some time to overcome. Starting with kids in middle school through events like the Construction Academy and GCS World of Work - we hope to broaden their view of the career paths available to them or at least respect them. At these events we attempted to provide handouts that both had information pertinent to the student and hopefully their parents. Many other ideas have been discussed to continue educating young people about construction careers. Connection is a problem that has a more immediate solution. The young people coming out of high school or college needing a job are being pursued by large non-residential construction companies or industries with dedicated people whose only job is to hire people month after month. Our industry can’t compete with that. Our industry is mostly comprised of small businesses needing to hire one or two people at a time sporadically. This therefore leads to needing to know someone to get a job. Small businesses that make up our industry need to come together to compete by hiring many people month after month collectively.
Online Job Database An online job database system has been created in an attempt to provide this collaboration. It will be available to all GBA members to post job openings. If someone is looking for a job in our industry - they can be directed to the GBA’s website by us at a booth during an event, their teacher, instructor, counselor, etc. Everything is in one place so it’s easy for someone to find information on available jobs. It also is a huge value for GBA members to post openings they have. If you are interested in learning more or helping with our beta site for this job posting service, contact Cheryl Collins at (336) 855-6255 or ccollins@greensborobuilders.org. She can provide a test link. We would greatly appreciate any feedback to enhance and improve this program.

Construction Zone
Greensboro Children’s Museum Years ago when the Greensboro Children’s Museum opened, GBA members were involved in developing and building a Construction Zone. Over the years this area has seen lots of playtime…but is showing its age! As part of our Construction Careers initiative, we are forming an exploratory task force to look at how we can enhance and update this space. It’s time to give it new life and energy incorporating today’s technology! Our first meeting will be held in late August / early September. If you would like to participate on this task force, please contact Will Yearns, Granville Homes or Cheryl Collins at the GBA office (336) 855-6255 or ccollins@greensborobuilders.org.
Industry Classroom Participation Instructors at both Guilford County Schools and GTCC would welcome industry members to join them in the classroom to talk with students about construction careers and the various opportunities within our industry. If you would be willing to visit high school and/or community college Carpentry, Electrical & HVAC classrooms to share information, please let us know. We are forming an industry database and will email upcoming opportunities. In addition, we are exploring mentoring and job shadowing opportunities for these students, along with potential field trips to construction jobsites. Our involvement in the classroom is beneficial to educators, but getting the students into the field to see first-hand various aspects of our industry is invaluable. If you would be willing to host students on one of your job sites with various phases of construction underway, please let us know.
Construction Careers Quarterly Meeting Our next Construction Careers meeting will be held on Thursday, September 12 at 4 pm at the GBA Office. We will be reviewing the job database system as well as discussing plans with Guilford County Schools and GTCC for this fall. Anyone interested in helping with our workforce development initiative is encouraged to attend our quarterly meetings. Additional information can be found on the GBA website or contact Cheryl Collins at (336) 855-6255.
NCHBA Updates Congratulations to Gary Hill NC Housing Hall of Fame

Join us in congratulating Gary on this most deserving recognition!
