I
t’s hard to believe it’s already mid-February. I hope your year is off to a great start. I’m honored to serve as our Association President this year and look forward to working with you.
2020 Board of Directors Executive Committee / Officers PRESIDENT
Ford Matthews, FM Contracting, LLC
1ST VICE PRESIDENT
Our Board of Directors, in setting annual priorities and areas of focus, wants to continue to place emphasis on developing and growing our Membership; expanding our Construction Careers and Young Professional initiatives; along with providing Community Service opportunities for members to work together, giving back to our community. We encourage you to get involved this year as we need your insight and participation.
Will Yearns, Granville Homes, LLC
As a viable trade association, it is imperative that we expand and grow…which means promoting our Association…sharing information with others in the building industry about who we are, the diversity of our members, and the various benefits and services we provide.
SECRETARY
What are the greatest challenges you face today in your business? Do you think you are alone with those challenges? Ask those you do business with what their greatest obstacles are. I think you will find that many of us are dealing with the same type of problems each day…whether it be general business challenges…regulatory and inspection issues…to the shortage of a skilled workforce. By utilizing opportunities to meet with other members and share information, we often can find a more productive and effective solution. Based on the longevity of our businesses, our experiences and issues may differ, but I think we all benefit from working together, giving back to our industry through active participation in our association. Your GBA membership provides you the MEANS to grow your business… Marketing – building greater awareness of your company and services can be achieved in a variety of ways – from participating in meetings and special events – to advertising through our home tours Education – knowledge is power - staying abreast of industry issues – learning to operate more efficiently can take your business to the next level Advocacy – having a collective voice on industry issues is beneficial to all of us as we navigate growing regulatory and industry challenges, whether on the local, state or national level Networking – increase your business contacts by attending meetings, events, educational programs, community service initiatives Savings – take advantage of the various member-only discounts and savings provided Membership benefits will vary in importance and interest…which is why we need to talk with others in our industry and encourage their involvement. New this year, we hope you will join us for First Wednesday Member Connections – a mixture of after-hours socials, coffee & conversation, educational programs and community service opportunities. These events are designed to provide an informal way to connect and meet other industry members…as well as invite prospective members to attend with you. Collectively working together...we become a stronger industry association…while growing and developing our own businesses.

Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat Celebrating 64 Homes
W
e did it again...we built 4 houses in one week! This was the ninth build since our inaugural build in 2003 in which we constructed 12 homes in one week. To date GBA members have NOW built 64 NEW homes for families through our partnership with Habitat Greensboro...along with 3 home renovations.
4
Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat brings builders, remodelers, suppliers and trade contractors together to work side by side to build houses from foundation to dedication in one incredible week. Fourteen builders volunteered to work in teams to construct the houses which were built to both Energy Star and the National Green Building Standard certifications.
A special thanks to BMC for their donation of four ReadyFrame packages. This was not only a tremendous financial contribution…but it was an opportunity for a new product to be experienced in the field.
We would like to thank everyone who helped with this year’s build. From our suppliers and trade contractors to our builder teams, Habitat staff and volunteers…everyone worked diligently to make the build successful. We couldn’t do these building blitzes without the support of the City of Greensboro Inspections Department who provided inspections as needed.
At the end of the week…seeing the smiles on the faces of the children and their families who have watched their first home go from a slab of concrete to a finished home…makes the long week and all the challenges worth it. As together we’re building more than homes...we’re helping to build communities!

Builder News Continuing Education for General Contractors
Parade of Homes
On July 1, 2019 Governor Cooper signed Senate Bill 55 into law which requires eight hours of continuing education for qualifiers who qualify a general contractor’s license in the classifications of Building, Residential and Unclassified as a condition to license renewal beginning with the 2021 license renewal.
Join us as we kick off the spring housing market with the annual Parade of Homes on Saturday & Sunday, April 25-26 & May 2-3. The Parade is a win-win for everyone involved…builders, associates and consumers. Builder participation helps not only promote your company, getting in front of prospective buyers...it also helps your suppliers and trade contractors gain name recognition as a valued and trusted industry resource.
The Licensing Board is currently finalizing the guidelines for implementing the continuing education program. It is anticipated the continuing education program will be administered as follows: Eight hours of continuing education annually consisting of a two-hour mandatory course which will be produced by the Board and six hours of Board approved elective credit for classes offered by Board approved providers and instructors. The continuing education year will begin January 1 and end on November 30 each year. In the first-year, courses will require a qualifier to physically attend classes. The classes may be instructed by a Boardapproved live instructor or one who has been videotaped or teaches a live multi-location web-streamed class. All courses must be administered by a Board-approved provider. In subsequent years, the Board will provide options to allow for qualifiers to complete the continuing education requirement in an on-line format. Continuing education courses are expected to be offered for credit beginning in May 2020. GBA is planning to provide CE courses in Greensboro once curriculum has been developed and approved. We will continue to monitor and provide updates from the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors on our website. You can also find updates on the Licensing Board website at www.NCLBGC.org.
