Vol. 41 No. 2 2021
President’s Message Will Yearns 2021 GBA President
W
orkforce development has been a top priority for our Association for the past several years…and this year, our Board of Directors is placing even greater emphasis on opportunities to grow our workforce. We have restructured our Construction Careers committee with an internal (members) and external (community partners and organizations) focus. We encourage you or others within your company to join our committee as we work to develop new workforce initiatives. One new partnership that we are pleased to announce is with Builders Bridge. Many of you may have joined our First Wednesday Zoom call in May as we learned more about this non-profit that was founded by True Homes Foundation. As we all know, the home building industry is growing…but we do not have the labor force to fill that need.
2021 Board of Directors Executive Committee / Officers PRESIDENT
Will Yearns, Granville Homes, LLC
1ST VICE PRESIDENT
Susan Mowery, Building Dimensions, Inc.
2ND VICE PRESIDENT
Kevin Pegram, Kylind Services, Inc.
ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT Rebecca Lenz, Lenz Designs
SECRETARY Tim Marion, Marion Tile & Flooring
TREASURER
David Stone, D. Stone Builders, Inc.
IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT
Builders Bridge is committed to serving that need by creating pathways for students and young adults that build careers. And in doing so, their model makes it easy, successful, and replicable for community and trade partners. Some of the ways they are doing this include creating curriculum, such as Trade Talk videos, that educate students, parents, and educators about construction career opportunities; providing summer internships and work-based learning opportunities; providing immersion tours to construction job sites; as well as working with educators to bring industry members into the classroom to share their experiences with students. Several GBA members have committed this summer to providing an 8-week internship for area students (ages 16-23) with on-the-job training. Builders Bridge interviews student applicants and works to place them with local companies, monitoring their internship throughout the summer. The interest among students is growing and we hope to have more GBA members interested in providing internships next year. This fall we are looking to participate with Builders Bridge in providing immersion tours in which students are offered half-day and/or full-day opportunities to tour a job site, meet industry leaders, and learn from different trades providing a hands-on learning activity for the students. The purpose of these tours is to expose young people to a variety of career opportunities within the building industry; as well as encourage them to make connections with trade partners and builders. High schools and middle schools are always looking for trade contractors and builders/ remodelers to come in and share industry information. If you would be willing to be a guest speaker, please let us know as we are compiling a list of members interested in providing classroom visits. We are pleased to be working with Builders Bridge to help grow this initiative in the Triad. It is critical as an industry that we continue to address workforce development needs, working with community partners and educational organizations. We encourage you to join our efforts. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions and/or for additional information.

GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE
Associate Member of the Year Rebecca Lenz, Lenz Designs was awarded the 2020 Associate Member of the Year Award. Rebecca has been an active member for the past four years since joining the Association. She has served on several committees including Membership; Young Professionals; Golf; Community Service; and Construction Careers. In addition, she has served on the GBA Board of Directors the past three years, currently serving on the Executive Committee as our Associate Vice President. Rebecca is a true Ambassador for our Association. Her leadership and willingness to help in so many areas are greatly valued and appreciated.
Kavanagh Award Cynthia Blue, City of Greensboro was awarded the 2020 Kavanagh Award for her ongoing commitment and support of affordable housing. Cyndi has worked with the City of Greensboro for the past 20 years. She is currently the Division Manager for Housing Services under the Neighborhood Development Department. Cyndi led the Storm Recovery Alliance team comprised of the City staff, local nonprofits, and developers to rebuild neighborhoods impacted by the tornado in east Greensboro in 2018. To date more than 55 homes have been repaired and 20 new homes built.
President’s Award Tom Hall, Windsor Homes, and Scott Allred, Precept Construction were recognized with the 2020 President’s Award for their contributions “over & beyond” in 2020…spearheading a membership drive resulting in 50 new Association members during a pandemic. Both are past presidents of our Association and continue to remain active members serving on our Board of Directors in state and national director roles. In addition, Tom Hall received the 2020 Membership Recruiter of the Year award for recruiting the most new members.
Lewis Award Rich & Kathy Dumas, R & K Custom Homes received the 2020 Lewis Award for utilizing the most Association members in the construction of their Parade home, working with more than 40 Associate members.
ReBuilding Hope to the home on Eastwood. “The goal of this partnership is to provide hands-on learning to students interested in the carpentry trade,” said Roever. “This venture has been a great way to provide that experience and help our community with affordable housing.” In addition, HVAC students were also involved in the construction of the home.
T
hree years ago in April, a tornado tore a destructive path throughout East Greensboro, impacting more than 600 single family homes. GBA member Community Housing Solutions (CHS) played a big role immediately following the tornado in helping to patch roofs…and in the months following, countless home repairs were made so that homes could be inhabited again. Two years after this destructive storm, vacant lots could be found in these neighborhoods where homes used to stand. Some homes were deteriorating, exposing the neighborhood to health and safety threats. CHS began partnering with the City of Greensboro and Housing Consultants Group in building new homes or rehabbing abandoned homes on these lots to help restore and revitalize these neighborhoods for new homebuyers.
Shae Peoples, the homeowner, will soon move into her new home on Eastwood Ave. Shae moved to Greensboro in the 90s and soon thereafter lost her husband to cancer. Since then, she has been trying to rebuild her life. “This home is a true blessing to me,” said Shae. “It will be a new start, a place to call home.” Shae says one of her favorite spots of her new home is her front porch. It’s a great place to sit, reflect on her blessings and get to know her new neighbors. We would like to thank all our members who were involved in helping make this new home a reality through their generous donations during a very challenging year. We value your contributions and support as together we continue to support affordable housing initiatives in our community.
