Celebrating 65 Years!

It’s been an amazing year and my honor to serve as your president. As we have emerged from the pandemic, I am proud of the efforts that have been made by our volunteer leadership and staff to accomplish and exceed our goals.

Throughout the year we have seen an increase in member participation, especially with our First Wednesday Member Connections. If you haven’t attended one, I highly recommend that you do as they provide an informal opportunity to make new business connections.

We just completed our Builder Cup Challenge membership drive…and would like to welcome our new members…as well as thank our volunteers who served on membership teams. To continue to achieve our goals, growing our membership is critical to our success. We all do business with companies that could benefit from membership. I encourage you to invite those you do business with to join.

As we continue to face challenges within our industry, with the softening housing market along with the many unknowns for the upcoming year, it’s more important than ever for each of us to be engaged within our trade association. From educational programs…to roundtable discussions addressing regulatory issues…to helping us promote construction careers…there is a place for everyone to participate.

As I reflect on this year…there are a few highlights that I would like to share.

•Professional Women in Building (PWB) Council – we were chartered in February and today have 54 members. Our goal is to encourage, support and promote women engaged in the construction industry. If you haven’t joined yet…you need to!

•Construction Careers Scholarship Fund – new this year, we allocated proceeds from our spring golf tournament to form a scholarship fund for skilled trades. If you would like to be part of the team developing the scholarship program, let us know.

•Education – from our Housing & Political Outlook featuring NAHB’s chief lobbyist…to continuing education classes…to council programs throughout the year…there continue to be numerous opportunities to learn and grow.

•Community Service – providing affordable housing in our community has always been a priority for our Association and this year is no different. Construction is underway on our 65th Habitat home as part of our Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat initiative. We encourage you to participate as there will be opportunities for all.

•Parade of Homes & Tour of Remodeled Homes – these events not only provide consumers with the opportunity to tour virtually and in-person new homes and residential renovations…they provide tremendous marketing value for participating builders, remodelers and our suppliers and trade partners. We had record attendance for this Fall’s Parade.

•Special Events – Marketing and networking events have included two sold-out golf tournaments, two skeet tournaments, First Wednesday Member Connections, Oktoberfest, $10,000 Reverse Raffle, Associates Expo, YPN and more. Our final event for the year will be our Holiday Party on December 8 – we hope to see you there.

Again, thank you for allowing me to serve as your 65th Association president…it has truly been a privilege. I have always valued my GBA membership…and have an even greater respect and appreciation this year for all that can be accomplished working together.

Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat

Help Us Build Our 65th Home

John Hodgin has volunteered to again spearhead our annual Raising Roofs build. John has participated in every build since inception…and chaired the past six builds. We are so grateful for his continued leadership and commitment to helping us provide affordable housing in our community.

Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat is a partnership established in 2003 between the Greensboro Builders Association and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, in which we constructed twelve homes in one week. To sustain this initiative, builds have been held every 2-3 years since. To date, GBA members have constructed 64 Habitat homes during one-week builds.

In celebration of the Greensboro Builders Association’s 65th anniversary …we have started construction of our 65th Habitat home at 1301 Phipps Avenue, in the White Oak Heights community, in a standard 4-5 month build schedule.

Our goal is to engage and involve GBA members, along with GTCC students, throughout the construction of the home. As part of our construction careers initiative…it will be great to have members working side-by-side with students…which could be potential employees for your company.

Habitat Homeownership

Habitat gives a hand-up, not a hand-out. Homeowners provide sweat equity, working alongside volunteers to construct their home. Habitat provides interest-free loans to homeowners who make monthly mortgage payments…payments that allow Habitat to build more homes.

Over the years, one of the highlights of each Raising Roofs build… has been seeing the pure joy and appreciation of the homeowners and especially their children…as they purchase their first home… something many never dreamed possible. This year is no different.

Our homeowner is a single mom who ran an in-home daycare in Ohio for ten years. She realized she needed a change and wanted a brighter future for her family…so after finalizing her divorce, she moved to NC with her four children. She is employed full time with a local logistics company…and feels being accepted into Habitat Greensboro’s Homeownership Program was an answer to her prayers. We are excited to meet and work with Hasinah and her family as we build her first and our 65th Habitat home over the next five months.

Raising Roofs has been tremendously successful over the years due to the generous contributions of Association members…giving of their time and financial resources…as well as donating and/ or discounting labor and materials. We anticipate much of the same for our 65th home as several members have already made significant commitments to support this year’s build for which we are most appreciative.

•The Building Center framing package

•Builders FirstSource trusses

•Beacon Building Products roofing & siding

•Greensboro Kitchen & Bath cabinets

•Pella Windows & Doors windows

•CSM Flooring flooring

•Carolina Custom Surfaces countertops

•Pest Management Systems termite treatment

If you can help by providing building materials, skilled labor and/ or other services, please contact Mavis Holcombe to discuss at (336) 706-6942. Due to the extended time frame of this build, we have greater flexibility to work within your schedules for the services you can provide.

Financial Donations

Each year we focus on raising money to cover construction cost… not just in-kind donations…as additional financial contributions are needed to purchase materials and pay for skilled labor. If you would like to help with a financial donation, you can find a link on our website. Any level of financial support is greatly appreciated.

As we begin this year’s build…a very special THANK YOU to Pest Management Systems (PMi) as they have supported Raising Roofs with their sponsorship of annual Jersey Nights at the Greensboro Grasshoppers for the past 16 years, raising more than $100,000. We are beginning this build with $22,000 from their generous sponsorship of this annual event since our last build.

Follow construction updates on our website and Facebook page. We welcome your participation in any level. There will be opportunities for general volunteer workdays…no skill required…just a willingness to help.

Parade of Homes

It’s time to start planning for our Spring Parade of Homes to be held April 29-30 and May 6-7. Each year the Parade provides consumers the opportunity to tour newly constructed homes, both in person and virtually.

Why Participate here’s what some of our Fall Parade of Homes participants had to say.

“As a new member of GBA, it was such a joy to participate in the Fall Parade of Homes! We received so much support and acceptance from the Association and the local community. We estimate more than 1,000 people came out to view our home each weekend! We look forward to participating in many more Parade of Homes to come!”

“The Parade of Homes is and always has been an instrumental part of showcasing our model homes and a great opportunity to drive traffic into new and upcoming communities.”

“The Fall Parade of Homes was a highlight of the year for our company - great attendance resulting in viable prospects! It continues to be the best marketing dollars annually for our company.”

“We have found participating in the Parade both virtually and with open houses provides great marketing exposure for our homes and company. The virtual tours remain active on the website which provides consumers the opportunity to preview homes we have built… and drives traffic to our website.”

“The Parade continues to be the best marketing we do to showcase our custom-built homes. We had more than 800 visitors during the Fall Parade of Homes.”

“Wolfe Homes enjoyed the opportunity to partner with GBA in connecting with and inspiring our community, as we seek to create beauty and excellence in each place we touch! Our home was constantly flooded with eager Parade participants who left with dreams and aspirations of their own.”

“The Fall Parade was well attended. We have builders currently working with several prospects that came through their Parade homes.”

Early registration deadline for the Spring Parade is February 3 with all publication information, including elevation & floor plans, submitted by February 28. For additional information, contact Mavis Holcombe at (336) 706-6942.

Be Pro Be Proud NC

This new program, spearheaded by NCHBA with funding from the General Assembly, utilizes custom-built tractor trailers outfitted with virtual reality simulators to provide middle and high school students with hands-on experience in the skilled trades. Different workstations inside the trailers allow students to experience what it’s like to use an excavator, practice welding, drive a tractor trailer, and work in construction.

We can’t wait to have these trucks visit Guilford County schools in the coming year!
