President’s Message

Kevin Pegram 2023 GBA President

Workforce development is one of the greatest challenges our industry has faced over the past decade and continues today with an increasing shortage of skilled labor.

Our Construction Careers initiative has been involved working with area schools to promote career opportunities within the construction industry. This has included classroom and jobsite visits, career fairs, job shadowing and internships, participating with Skills USA, as well as partnering with Junior Achievement to host a Construction Academy for 8th graders.

We need to expand on these initiatives by providing financial support and scholarships for construction skills training. In developing an annual scholarship program with sustainable funding sources, our goal is to attract students, young adults, and others with financial support to obtain the skilled training needed to pursue careers in construction.

Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment Fund

Our Board of Directors has approved the formation of a Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment fund. Endowment money will be restricted and held in a Construction Careers Scholarship Fund within the GBA Benefit Trust – a 501c3 charitable trust. Only interest and gains on the endowment principal will be used to provide scholarships.

So, here’s where we need your participation. We need industry members to serve on two task forces that are being formed this summer to develop and advance this initiative.

•Scholarship Endowment Fund: This group will focus on securing the financial resources needed to develop, manage, and grow the endowment fund, including corporate donations and special fund-raising events such as the fall Construction Careers CASINO Night.

• Scholarship Program: This group will develop and administer all aspects of the scholarship program from establishing scholarship criteria and the application process, to the selection and awards of the scholarships. This committee will work closely with area schools, colleges and workforce development organizations to market and promote the scholarship program. Our goal is to award scholarships in 2024.

I encourage you to consider joining this initiative as we all benefit from promoting and growing our workforce. Students and adults need to be aware of the tremendous opportunities within construction. As an industry, we have a great story to share and need your help in promoting the value and growth opportunities associated with construction careers.

Reach out to myself, Will Yearns or Cheryl Collins, for additional information and to be included on our Construction Careers planning team and/or one of the two task forces being formed to develop our scholarship initiative this year.

Celebrating Our 65th House

As our Association celebrated its 65th anniversary this past year, it was only fitting that we also build our 65th Habitat home.

Twenty years ago, the Greensboro Builders Association formed a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro known as  Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat…in which homes were constructed in one-week building blitzes. This initiative continues today…evolving into every other year builds. From 2003 to 2019…GBA members constructed 64 Habitat homes.

Due to the generous contributions of Association members…giving of their time and financial resources by donating and/or discounting materials and labor…Raising Roofs continues to be an integral part of our community service efforts.

In December, we started construction on our 65th Habitat home…chaired by John Hodgin, John Hodgin Construction. This year’s build was different than all others…as we did a standard construction timeline with the goal of completing the home within six months.

2022 Annual Awards

ur Annual Awards were presented on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Starmount Forest Country Club during our annual awards / spring celebration event.

Join us in congratulating the following individuals recognized for their contributions to the Association, the building industry and community.

Eugene Gulledge Award

The Eugene Gulledge Award for Distinguished Service is the highest honor given by the Builders Association. It is named in honor of Eugene Gulledge who founded the Greensboro Builders Association sixty-six years ago. This award recognizes continuous, outstanding contributions to the Builders Association and the community at large over an extended period.

Joan Swift, Swift Creek Construction & Real Estate Services was awarded the 2022 Eugene Gulledge Award. Joan has been involved in the building industry for more than 15 years, as a licensed general contractor and Realtor. She has served on almost every GBA committee and council as well as the GBA Board of Directors for the past 10 years in various capacities, including 2019 GBA President. This past year she was instrumental in the formation of the Greensboro Professional Women in Building (PWB) Council, while also serving as president of the NC PWB Council. In addition, she has been active with the High Point Realtors Association, serving as president; and the NC Home Builders Association serving as a state director. Joan is also very involved in community service, participating annually as a building team leader in Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat.

Builder Member of the Year

Susan Mowery, Building Dimensions was awarded the 2022 Builder Member of the Year Award. Susan has been involved in the Association for the past 22 years serving in a variety of leadership roles. She has been involved in the Parade of Homes, Membership, Construction Careers and Finance committees; a founding member of the Triad Green Building Council; as well as served on the GBA Board of Directors the past five years. This past year she served as our 65th Association president while championing the formation of our Professional Women in Building (PWB) Council.

Associate Member of the Year

Kathy Haines, Kathy Haines Homes by eXp Realty was awarded the 2022 Associate Member of the Year Award. Kathy has been involved in the real estate and building industry for the past 24 years, serving in a magnitude of leadership roles. She serves on our Parade of Homes, Membership and Construction Careers committees; is a founding member of our Professional Women in Building Council; and has served on our Board of Directors the past three years.

Kavanagh Award

John Hodgin, John Hodgin Construction Company was awarded the 2022 Kavanagh Award for his longstanding commitment and support of affordable housing. John has been involved with our Raising Roofs… Builders for Habitat initiative since its inception in 2003. He has served as a builder member on every build to date… as well as chaired this community service project for our association for the past seven builds…as well as currently coordinating the construction of our 65th Habitat home this year.

Lewis Award

Rich & Kathy Dumas, R & K Custom Homes received the 2022 Lewis Award for utilizing the most Association members in the construction of their Parade home, working with more than 40 Associate members. This is the sixth consecutive year of receiving this award.

Membership Recruiter

Brad Hawkins, Granville Homes received the 2022 Membership Recruiter of the Year award for recruiting the most new members in 2022.

Showcasing Professional Renovations

It’s the final week to participate in our 26th annual Tour of Remodeled Homes, sponsored by the Remodelers Council, showcasing professionally renovated homes on Saturday & Sunday, August 26-27.

Participation agreements, as well as sponsorship & advertising commitments are due by June 30.

Virtual tours of renovations, along with remodeler contact information, remain on the GBA website throughout the year which is a great resource for consumers looking for a professional remodeler.

TOUR magazines provide marketing opportunities for all members to promote your business, products and services to area consumers interested in home renovations.

Fall Parade of Homes

Showcasing NEW Residential Homes

Planning is underway for the Fall Parade of Homes to be held October 21-22 & 28-29

Early discounted registration deadline is August 4 . Final registrations must be submitted by August 25

The Fall Parade will feature open houses and virtual tour only entries. Parade homes can be specs and/or pre-sales as well as previous entries for the virtual tour only option.

NEW this year, builders are encouraged to highlight a feature in each home, that will create additional interest for consumers touring the Parade homes.

Virtual tours for all Parade homes remain on the GBA website and mobile app for six months, serving as additional marketing exposure throughout the year as consumers visit the website looking for builders.

Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are available in the Parade of Homes magazine, which is available digitally, as well as printed and distributed through retail distribution points.
