GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE

I

t has been so great to gather in person again. We had such a fun St. Patrick’s Day Kickoff Celebration and annual meeting in March. Please join us in congratulating our annual award recipients for their longstanding and continued dedication to our Association, industry and community. As we move through this spring…the housing and renovation market continues to be extremely strong…however not without challenges. We continue to deal with inflation as well as supply chain issues. But our vendors, suppliers and trade contractors continue to work together to make the puzzle come together. When we talk about the value of Doing Business with Members…it is because of the trusted relationships we have built with association members. There is definite credibility and benefits involved with being a member of our Association. Even though so much occurs behind the scenes…know that your local, state and national associations are advocating on our behalf…whether it be to address inspection concerns, regulatory restraints, or the increasing cost and demand for building materials. I had the opportunity to attend the NCHBA regional meeting last month and was overwhelmed to learn the amount of legislative bills that are presented in the General Assembly each year that could pose serious threats to our industry. As GBA members, you are invited to join us in Raleigh next month for NCHBA’s Legislative Reception along with individual visits scheduled with our Guilford delegation to discuss industry issues. I would like to extend special thanks to our members who recently participated on the TREBIC Elections Committee, spending three days interviewing candidates for upcoming City & County elections, to determine those who understand our issues and are supportive of the building industry. If you have any questions on who to support, we encourage you to review our list of candidates before going to the polls. We just completed our Spring Parade of Homes and appreciate the support of our participating builders, members and sponsors. Consumer traffic and interest is at an all-time high for new construction and renovations. Now is the time to start planning to participate in the Fall Parade of Homes with open houses in mid-October…as well as our Tour of Remodeled Homes to be held in August. Building our workforce and promoting Construction Careers remains a top priority for our Association. If your company can offer students an 8-week internship this summer, please consider supporting Builders Bridge in this initiative. We also are looking to expand our partnership with Guilford County Schools and GTCC and need industry members to help with classroom visits and mentoring opportunities. As I have said before and will continue to say…membership participation is critical for our Association to grow and meet our goals. I encourage you to join me in promoting membership in the Greensboro Builders Association. Invite prospective members to join – as well as attend an upcoming event – such as First Wednesday Member Connections - to see the value firsthand. There are numerous other opportunities such as our Young Professional Network – Professional Women in Building – Remodelers Council just to name a few. Let’s all do our part to get involved and help make an impact in our Association and for our industry.

Construction Careers Builders Bridge: Summer Internships Workforce Development remains one of the greatest challenges our industry faces today. We have an opportunity to help provide summer internships this summer through our partnership with Builders Bridge…an initiative that is creating pathways for students (ages 16-23) interested in construction. Last year they had more than 45 applicants interested in the summer internship program. We need companies looking to grow their workforce to provide summer internships from June 20 – August 13. Builders Bridge will provide the coordination as they have interviewed the students and will work with local employers to place and monitor students throughout the internship process. Students are to be paid $10-$15 per hour with on-the-job training and mentorship opportunities. Many students become employees upon graduation. Some of the specific trades in demand include: •HVAC •Plumbing •Carpentry •Framing •Masonry •Flooring •Painting

•Tile Work •Roofing •Concrete •Drywall Installation •Window & Door Installation •Landscaping

Jobs Portal GBA Member-Only Benefit www.GreensboroBuilders.org/jobs Knowing how critical the labor shortage is for our members, as part of our Construction Careers initiative, we created an online job posting service. We need your help in populating the jobs portal with current positions available. This is a complimentary member-only benefit to post job openings you have. Visit www.greensborobuilders.org/jobs to create an online account and begin posting available positions. The website link to a listing of available jobs in our industry will be shared with Guilford County Schools and GTCC students looking to enter the workforce throughout the year as well as other organizations promoting employment opportunities.

To learn more about providing summer internship opportunities this year, contact Whitney Higgins, Manager of Programs & Partnership at whiggins@truehomesusa.com or (920) 213-8009.

Construction Careers Committee Developing and growing our workforce requires all of us working together to promote and build greater awareness and interest in construction careers. From talking with students, their parents, and anyone looking for a career change…we need to share the opportunities available. Earlier this year members of our Construction Careers committee participated with the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro to submit a federal Good Jobs Challenge grant application focused on workforce training for the construction industry. We hope to learn the status of the grant this summer. We encourage you to join our Construction Careers planning team as we are looking to expand our partnership with Guilford County Schools and GTCC…and need your participation in our quarterly meetings and outreach initiatives including the development of a scholarship program. Builder News Tour of Remodeled Homes It’s time to start making plans for our 25th annual Tour of Remodeled Homes sponsored by the Remodelers Council showcasing professional remodeling. Entries may be traditional open houses as well as virtual tour only. Target date for this year’s event is mid-August. Renovations should be available for photography and virtual tours by June 30. There is no limitation on the number of years back the project was completed… so you can showcase prior renovations. By having the option for traditional open houses as well as virtual tour only, remodelers have the flexibility to showcase a variety of projects, especially ones that homeowners prefer to not open to the public. Participation Agreement & Homeowner Consent Forms are due by June 30. Virtual tours of the renovations, along with remodeler contact information, remains on the TOUR website page throughout the year which is a great resource for consumers looking for a professional remodeler. Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are available for the Tour of Remodeled Homes magazine, which is printed and available digitally.
