Vol. 40 No. 2 2020
President’s Message Ford Matthews 2020 GBA President
T
o say this has been a crazy, few months is an understatement. Who would have thought we would see our country faced with a pandemic and our economy be shut down so quickly? As we were last together for our Annual Awards membership meeting on March 10…things changed within 24-48 hours. We are fortunate that our industry was deemed essential and the majority of our members have been able to continue to work, even while dealing with the daily challenges the COVID-19 outbreak has placed on our personal and professional lives.
2020 Board of Directors Executive Committee / Officers PRESIDENT
Ford Matthews, FM Contracting, LLC
1ST VICE PRESIDENT Will Yearns, Granville Homes, LLC
2ND VICE PRESIDENT
Susan Mowery, Building Dimensions, Inc.
ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT Rebecca Lenz, Lenz Designs
It’s times like this that we see the true value of our 3-in-1 association membership and how it works for us. Even though advocacy on our account is ongoing, we don’t typically recognize its impact until it hits us directly, like this pandemic has with Stay-at-Home regulatory orders being put in place.
SECRETARY
Starting with our local government affairs staff staying in touch with City and County officials, advocating for planning and inspections departments to continue to operate, even amidst City Hall closings. Our NCHBA staff was in constant contact with the Department of Insurance working to ensure inspections continue, allowing remote options. Our state and national associations successfully advocated for construction – including residential – to be considered and remain an essential service.
IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT
NAHB has provided numerous resources and guidelines, including a series of webinars, to help us protect our employees, trade contractors and clients. NCHBA held weekly Virtual Town Halls on Fridays with industry updates for the past eight weeks. Our GBA Staff quickly adjusted to meet these challenges…cancelling and postponing scheduled events…monitoring industry updates with NAHB and NCHBA…and communicating those updates and resources through our Member News emails, on our website and social media pages. While working remotely, they have been able to continue to provide the service that we have come to expect and rely on…and for that we say thank you. Moving ahead, we all are adapting to new protocols and procedures, taking appropriate safety precautions on job sites and in our showrooms and offices. As an association, we are looking forward to when we can schedule in-person gatherings, but for now we are focused on virtual meetings, while waiting until further restrictions are lifted. Given that real estate services were deemed essential in the Governor’s Stay-at-Home Order, we are pleased to proceed with our Spring Parade of Homes even though it may look and feel different. New this year we have added virtual tours of all the homes. The ability to physically tour the homes will be based on the regulatory guidelines in place at the time of the event. Our Tour of Remodeled Homes may move to a virtual event as well…as many homeowners are reluctant to open their homes. We are all adjusting to changes…and will continue to do so. Together we can lean on each other and provide support to get through this…that’s the value of our membership at work for us.

Upcoming Events D
ue to the unknowns on when we will be moving into the next phases of our statewide Stay-at-Home Order…we have had to cancel and postpone several spring events…with the hope to reschedule some of them this summer. We miss having the ability to connect in-person. Virtual meetings may be in our future for a while…as we are utilizing technology to conduct council and committee meetings… which we are finding to be productive and convenient to log-in from your office, home or mobile device on a jobsite. We did host a virtual First Wednesday After Hours on May 6…which was great to reconnect as well as meet a few new members. Since we are having to postpone our First Wednesday Summer Bash @ Francini on June 3 – watch for plans for another virtual networking opportunity instead.
Mike White | 336-994-3797
NCHBA Legislative Visits scheduled for June 9 & 10 have been cancelled as well as committee meetings. The Board of Directors meeting will be held virtually on June 9.
Planning will start in June & July for our Fall Parade of Homes to be held October 10-11 & 17-18. As we move forward, we will keep you updated on the status of GBA events through the Member News emails, on our website and Facebook page. We look forward to reconnecting soon! Make sure you are following our website and social media pages for updates!

Industry Resources to Protect Your Business A
s we have all tried to figure out how to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak…safety of our Association members and their families, employees, suppliers and trade contractors has been the top priority of our local, state and national association. Through their advocacy efforts, construction and related services was deemed “essential” allowing the majority of our members to continue to work.
One section on the website includes a detailed plan provided by the Construction Industry Safety Coalition (CISC) that outlines the steps that every employer and employee can take to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. The plan describes how to prevent worker exposure to coronavirus, protective measures to be taken on the jobsite, personal protective equipment and work practice controls to be used, cleaning and disinfecting procedures, and OSHA guidance on what to do if a worker becomes sick, including recordkeeping requirements. As part of this plan, they have jobsite safety posters and videos in both English and Spanish.
Our TREBIC staff has worked closely with the City of Greensboro, High Point and Guilford County to ensure inspections and plan review services have continued even as the majority of their employees have been working remotely.
NAHB also provided numerous webinars, many of which can be viewed on the NAHB website. We encourage you to visit www.NAHB.org and click on the Coronavirus Preparedness and Responses section to access these industry resources.
NCHBA has maintained daily contact with the Department of Insurance and Governor’s office, monitoring and communicating updates. Weekly Virtual Town Hall meetings have provided timely and informative information. These forums are available to listen to at www.NCHBA.org under the Members-Only section.
In addition, Builders Mutual has created a COV ID-19 section on their website to help keep members and policy holders informed on the latest developments with helpful links and resources, including safety videos and posters available to download and use. www.buildersmutual.com/policyholders/covid19
NAHB has been committed from the onset of the pandemic to help builders, remodelers and all other residential construction businesses navigate a challenging and evolving market due to the coronavirus. The collection of resources on their website provides insights about job site safety, small business loans, paid sick and family leave for employees, tax provisions and more. This information is being continuously updated as updates and additional details become available.
Many of these industry updates and resources have been shared over the past few months through our Member News emails, as well as on our website and GBA Members Facebook page. Make sure you are following each of these for access to ongoing updates.
Prevention & Safety Resources COVID-19 Basic Infection Prevention Measures COVID-19, caused by a new coronavirus, is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The following infection prevention measures may help prevent transmission on construction job sites.
Stay home if you are sick. DO NOT WORK.
NO TRABAJES.
Wash hands frequently or provide alcohol-based hand rubs containing at least 60% alcohol. Cover coughs and sneezes.
Lávese las manos con frecuencia o proporcione desinfectantes para manos a base de alcohol que contengan al menos 60% de alcohol. Cubra la tos y los estornudos.
Practice social distancing — try to maintain SIX feet between each worker. Wear face covering (cloth, bandana, etc.) or mask over nose and mouth to prevent spread of virus. Reduce the size of any group at any one time to 10 people or fewer or LIMIT all in-person meetings. Minimize ride-sharing. While in vehicle, employees must ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid sharing tools with co-workers, if possible. Clean and disinfect frequently used tools, equipment, and frequently touched surfaces (door handles, handrails, machinery controls, cell phones, tablets) on a regular basis. If N95 respirator masks are not available, minimize dust and airborne contaminants by using engineering and work practice controls. Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when cleaning and disinfecting, such as gloves and eye protection. Revised – 4/23/2020
nahb.org/coronavirus
