Greensboro Country Club January | February 2016

Time for Some Summer Fun!

President’s Message Dear Fellow Members, I am deeply honored and privileged to serve as club president in 2016. I have been a member of Greensboro Country Club for most of my life and have seen many changes over such a long (very long!) period of time. From a golf-centric, male dominated club with one Irving Park campus, we have grown into a family-centric, diverse collection of over 1300 members and two distinctly wonderful locations. While golf remains the preeminent core activity, fitness has become the most widely participated activity among our members, along with dining and, yes, coming to the Club to enjoy our favorite adult beverages with friends. The one thing that has not changed is the quality of the membership that has made GCC the premier country club in the Piedmont.

January | February 2016

We enter 2016 in another transition as we will see the arrival of a new Director of Golf in the spring, followed later by a new General Manager/CEO. During the work of the search committees, it was with great pride that we heard Greensboro Country Club referred to over and over as a top 100 club. It is a tribute to our membership and to our excellent and loyal staff, and especially to the leadership over many, many years by our volunteer boards, officers, and committees. I hope you will take the opportunity express your appreciation to 2015 President Gail Bernstein, and outgoing Board Members Garson Rice (2014 President) and Holt Gwyn. Their love and commitment to our Club was very evident by their tireless efforts on our behalf. As a Club, we are the beneficiaries of their foresight, wisdom and tremendous energy. I would like to highlight several of the other changes your board has been working on for 2016. First, we expect to unveil the much discussed Master Plan sometime in the first quarter. The nearly completed plan is a compilation of concepts of how to best utilize our limited space at our two campuses to meet the current and future needs of our membership. Your Board contracted with architects with nationally recognized expertise in country clubs to develop an objective view of how we could solve the jigsaw puzzle of fitting the various important pieces of our club into the postage stamp site at Irving Park and at the Farm. Once completed, with cost estimates and possible scheduling options, the plan will be presented for input from the entire membership. Once we have reached a consensus, the plan will become the template for any future projects.

Page 2

The thought is simply that our financial resources for capital projects are always going to be limited and we need to ensure that we don’t have to undo or redo one improvement when we choose later to do another. Everyone will be given an opportunity to weigh in on the plan and hear the thought processes that led to the construction of the plan. Speaking of capital projects, several important changes to our two locations will take place in 2016, none of which will conflict with the current Master Plan. The deteriorating old clubhouse buildings at the Farm will be demolished and the area cleaned up and landscaped. This would have taken place in 2015 but was deferred due to the winterkill expenses. Additionally, a state of the art indoor golf teaching facility will be built at the end of the Farm driving range. This addition to our golf programming will underscore our commitment to the game and its growth and offer an amenity expected of a premier country club. Lastly, an auxiliary kitchen will be constructed on the ground floor at IP to provide a specialized area for baking plus open up much needed space in our main upstairs kitchen. All of these projects are deemed important to the ongoing success of our Club. At the same time, our capital budget forecasts that our debt from our 2009 projects, the Farm course renovation, new fitness center and men’s locker room improvements, will still be reduced by over $1 million in 2016 and in keeping with the original schedule. As you read through the various department summaries in this newsletter, you will see the impact our superb professional staff, working with our voluntary advisory committees, are proposing for our sports, dining and entertainment programs. I cannot begin to express how proud we are of their commitment to provide memorable experiences and value for all Greensboro Country Club members. We are incredibly fortunate to have these gifted, loyal and hard-working individuals in our employ. And most especially, we are truly appreciative that Earl Anderson has taken a sabbatical from his retirement to return to GCC as interim General Manager to provide stability, support and guidance to our staff. We all owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. 2016 is going to be an exciting year. The Board and I look forward to representing you in striving to continue the wonderful legacy that exists at Greensboro Country Club. I hope to see you soon at the Club!

Pete Davenport President

Membership

I want to thank all the members who supported the Club last year by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. 2015 represented the first year since 2007 that we experienced positive net membership growth. During 2015, we accepted 48 new members and 12 reinstatements which helped offset 57 resignations for a net increase of three new members (as of our December 2015 Board meeting). As a “membership by invitation only" Club, we are dependent upon every member to help us identify individuals who will appreciate, enjoy and value all that our Club has to offer. Also, as renovations and facility upgrades are considered for both nearterm and long-term planning goals, a thriving membership will ensure these future projects and improvements come to fruition. If you have a friend, a co-worker or neighbor whose company you enjoy and extend an invitation to come over to the Club as your guest for cocktails, a meal, a round of golf, a game of tennis, an adult social event or a children’s party. These prospective members cannot experience any of these things without your invitation. But once they do, they will likely want to be part of our GCC community. Please let me, the Membership Committee or Brittany Mitchell, our Membership Director, know if you have any questions regarding how someone can become a member of our Club or how we can help showcase our Club to a prospective member. The 2016 Membership Committee (listed below) is a robust group consisting of several members who have served in prior years as well as many fresh faces. Together, we look forward to serving our Club and fostering a growing membership. I look forward to another successful year. Matthew Rankin, Chairman Membership Committee

Happy New Year to all! As I sit here writing this letter reflecting on all the fun times we had in 2015, I am looking forward to providing even more creative and fun ways for you to enjoy your Club. The team and I have listened to many of your suggestions for better family value dining options in the Family Grille. Due to popular member request, we have planned on some fun, value-orientated themes and menus to get the family together around the dinner table. We have some great offerings for Family Tuesdays in January and February, and please share any ideas that we can try out in March and April. Along with the new focus on Tuesdays, don’t miss out on Breakfast for Dinner on Wednesday. We are currently developing new menus to be implemented by the beginning of February, focused on making the Family Grille and 1909 each have their own identity with family value in mind.

Golf Golf Update Change is something we must always confront in life and business. Our Director of Golf, Jim Deaton is retiring from the club after 11 years of service. We want to take this opportunity to thank Jim for his many years of dedication to Greensboro Country Club and to the business and game of golf. Jim has been a great ambassador for this Club since 2004 and is a good friend, teacher and the consummate golf professional. The golf staff thanks you for everything you did for us daily as a boss, mentor and friend. Best wishes in retirement. Now go play golf!

As we ring in the New Year, we are confident that the weather will cooperate this year to provide us with more sunshine and less snow so we can enjoy our golf courses throughout the year-fingers crossed! With that being said, the golf calendar for the year is taking shape and we will soon provide a full calendar of events for men, ladies and juniors. Stay tuned! Sincerely, Your Golf Team

Tournament Results 2015 Mixed Team Champions

January | February 2016

Candace Cummings and Steve Warren teamed to slip into the Net Division first place with an eight under par 64 in the Four-Ball Stroke Play format and a one stroke margin ahead of Becky Campbell and William Morris. In the Gross Division Kris Flynt paired with John Stratton to forge a 75 for the Champions trophy. Congratulations to all!

League Championship Finals

A pleasant surprise for our golf season was the introduction of the Men’s League Championship. More than 112 members signed up for the team play with eight teams captained by gung-ho leaders. The matches for the ultimate crown were played with a home-and-home format with Forsyth. The first day was played at the IP course and could not have been a tighter race. With 10 players from each club, there were five matches held for five points to be won. The first result was a 2 ½ to 2 ½ draw to define the second day as the final determinant.

The Chairman’s Cup

Leading us off on Sunday were Captain Enochs and Cabell Poindexter to set the pace. With birdies on the first three holes, they built up a commanding lead. But the Forsyth teams were equal to the task. The end tally again could not have been too much closer, and our league champions were dispatched to the runner-up position with Forsyth being the victors with a narrow margin of 5 ½ to 4 ½ final score. Forsyth won the Sunday portion with three points to two points for our team.

The gross division winners were no surprise as Jim Fisher, former Chairman John Kirkman and the current Chairman, Cabell Poindexter posted a 68 to tiptoe past Russ Bell and James Mitchell who posted a lovely 70.

Both teams expressed how their respective clubs had enjoyed the weekly 9-hole matches and the concept of merging the different sects of membership into a unified summer competition. Forsyth, in their second season, had a big increase in their participation. And for GCC, we anticipate the same for our 2016 League Championship season.

Once again, The Chairman’s Cup is our season-ending event on the men’s golf schedule. There were some fine scores at Irving Park. In the net division, Robert Enochs, Mark Rainosek and the Chairman posted a day’s best 64 to outlast Russ Bell (draw), Chris Knox and the Chairman with 65.

Cabell Poindexter will get another chance to assist teams in 2016 as he will be returning as our Golf Committee Chairman.

Ladies Golf Association Message from Mary 2015 Annual Luncheon & Awards

Our Most Improved Player this year was Becky Campbell lowering her handicap over the season by seven strokes! Other players made great strides as well including improvement by six strokes by Robin Tosco and five by Rosie Powell. Donna Joyce, Ellen Lyon, Rosa McNairy and Anne Fox also bettered their handicap by four strokes. The secret to these improvements is playing more golf. Make that your goal in 2016 and you will also lower your handicap, and have more fun too! Our Ringer Board Winners were Becky Campbell, Kris Flynt and Deb Cobb all tied with a great score of 71 over the season on the Farm course.

Thank You!

Thank you especially to Becky Campbell (President) and Robin Tosco (VP) for their leadership for the LGA and their service on the Golf Committee! Thank you to all our 2015 LGA representatives for all their time and effort: Sherry Marus - Monday Fore Fun, Jeff Moore - 3 Fore 13 and Anne Fox - Twilight, Laura Norman - Team Captain, BJ Williams - Piedmont and Ellen Lyon - GWIGA. Turf Talk A Day in the Life - From Winterkill to Leaves to Trees

As the fall months rolled around and the winterkill efforts were all but concluded, the staff moved straight into fall aerification of the greens. Shortly thereafter our primary focus switched to leaf management on the two courses. On our two heavily wooded courses, leaf management consumes the vast majority of our manpower from late September all the way through to the early part of January. Once the two courses have been cleared of the massive amounts of leaves the staff will transition into tree management. Winter tree management typically includes pruning, tree removals and a limited amount of new plantings. Pruning primarily entails raising lower limb structure for improved playability and ease of maintenance. Tree removals include two categories. The first category is dead or declining trees that the staff was not able to attend to during the busy growing months. These trees are identified in the fall before they drop their leaves. The second category includes trees that are undesirable for a multitude of reasons. The Farm course has had significant reductions in its tree inventory prior to and during the recent renovation, and

removals on this course will primarily focus on dead or declining trees that are unaesthetically pleasing or pose a safety risk to golfers. While the Irving Park course has also had some small reductions in its tree populations over the past decade, this course presents the best opportunity for the benefits obtained through a managed tree thinning program. The Irving Park course has two zones. The exterior zone, with the exception of holes 4 through 7, is the part of the course bordered by neighboring streets. The primary focus throughout the exterior zone will be on new plantings to accentuate the boundaries and this component will be accounted for in greater detail in the Keith Foster master plan. The interior zone is the area where holes align against themselves. This is the zone where the costs versus benefits of trees have been analyzed most closely. The primary benefits of trees on golf courses are their aesthetic appeal and to a slightly lesser degree their strategic element. The goal of this year’s tree management program on the Irving Park course is to maximize the aesthetic appeal and to do so will sometimes require selective removals. Healthy tree removals can be necessary for five primary reasons. 1. To enhance or expose signature/specimen trees 2. To improve turf growing conditions in crucial or heavily shaded areas 3. To improve upon long range views 4. To remove trees that are unsightly or species that produce unwelcome debris 5. To thin large stands of trees for turf, playability or improved growth of remaining trees All the trees outlined for removal on the Irving Park course were reviewed with the leaders of the Club as well as the Club’s current architect, Keith Foster, before being included in the current 2016 Tree Plan, which is listed on the Golf Course Maintenance section of the Club’s website. January | February 2016

Although it seems like a distant thing of the past, the winterkill of 2015 brought devastation to turf on golf courses all throughout Piedmont. The scale of damaged turf ranged from just a few acres to well over 50 acres. The methods used to negate the damage and the ensuing cost was largely dictated by the amount of resources available at anyone particular facility. But despite the widespread damage witnessed this past spring, the final results I have personally witnessed at nearby courses were very similar in the end. Nearly everyone who had access to emergency funding had their courses back in very good condition by the middle part of August. The range of repair costs went from nearly $1 million at one unique facility down to around $40,000 for courses with the least amount of damage. I’m happy to say now that we are in the month of December and the final budget numbers are firming up that we are one of those clubs where the net cost to the club is very close to the bottom range spent by other courses in our area.

Brrrrrrrrr … It’s cold outside, but the Blue Dolphin 2016 Season is already starting to heat up! That’s right, Head Coach Katie McNerney is fired up for the 2016 Summer Season, and we want to encourage new and seasoned swim team families to join in on the Blue Dolphin preseason fun. The swimming season starts early this year with our GCC Swim Team Kickoff and Informational Social in February; open to returning Blue Dolphins, Mini Dolphins, and those new families wanting to find out more about GCC’s swim program. Beginning in March, our Blue Dolphin Team Training will be open to all levels of swimmers; from those just learning to swim, beginner and intermediate swim team members, and there is even pool time for our veteran, high school-aged swimmers. We are moving into a new era of Blue Dolphin Swimming and Coach Katie is excited and proud of the direction that the team is headed. The coaching staff is looking forward to the great times ahead and they hope to share the experience with all of you!

Shallow Pool Lessons: 30 Minutes 4:00 - 4:30 p.m. or 4:30 - 5:00 p.m.

The GCC Swim Team coaching staff is excited to start planning for our summer 2016 season. Here is some basic information for those who may be thinking about signing up for the Blue Dolphins Swim Team: • Swim Team is not only about the swimmers being successful in the water, but it is about them walking away having had a positive experience. We are working towards a strong team bond and a sense of accomplishment. • We want our swimmers to get the full experience while on the team by getting to know their teammates, building a bond with their coach and have a great swim. It is a five-week season that begins before the school year is over and ends in the blink of an eye. • Swimmers who are still developing can be a part of the team and do not have to compete until they are ready. We welcome anyone interested to come join a practice with us. If you are a returning family or one who is looking to join the team and you have questions, please feel free to contact me at kathryn.mcnerney@greensboro.edu.

These swim lessons are for Mini Dolphins 4 to 6 years of age who are comfortable in the water but who are not ready to swim independently for the Blue Dolphin Swim Team. Lessons are designed to help young swimmers with their stroke development.

Clinic: 45 Minutes 4:00 - 4:45 p.m.

Clinic is for swimmers ages 6 to 12 who are either Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Blue Dolphins or new participants who have had at least one season of competitive swim. Clinic is designed to give more individual attention to help address all areas of competitive swimming. Each day will have a theme. We will be using visuals, training gear, and drills to help with technique.

Practice: 1 Hour 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Team practice format is for swimmers age 13 to 18, and will give swimmers the opportunity to swim with their GCC teammates sooner!
