Time for Some Summer Fun!

President’s Message Dear Fellow Members,

July | August 2016

We are now in the middle of summer and things couldn’t be hotter at GCC! As previously announced, our new General Manager/Chief Operating Officer, Robert Lessinger will be arriving on the job in the first week of August, and those on the Search Committee and Board of Directors couldn’t be more excited. He is a quality individual with a proven track record of leadership in outstanding private clubs and will bring an intense focus to providing a superior experience and value proposition for all of our members and their families. He is a team-oriented manager who takes great pride in the development and accomplishments of his staff. Please watch your mail and inboxes for an invitation to a reception to welcome Robert to Greensboro Country Club.

As you travel around our two campuses and courses, be on the lookout for sawdust and dirt piles. The projects approved by the Board in the last few months will begin to get underway including the Farm Clubhouse renovation, the Golf Learning Center, platform tennis court, bathroom upgrades, and much more. You may experience some minor inconveniences, but please consider the “Excuse our Dust” signs as symbols of our commitment to continuous improvement. In regard to the much-discussed Master Plan, the arrival of our new GM/COO will allow us to restart that effort with an experienced guide on board to marshal the project. I would very much doubt that there will be much to report regarding this topic before the end of the year. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to our fine staff who, even in the absence of a general manager, have worked together tirelessly to provide seamless service to our membership. Even as some key employees have departed for other pursuits and opportunities, our staff has met the challenge of running a pretty darn good sized business and meeting our members' many needs and wants. Please take the opportunity to thank our various department heads and staff members who have been there for all of us this year. And, please include a thank you to our volunteer Board of Directors who have been working closely with the staff to provide support and guidance.

While Robert’s arrival is our biggest news event, we certainly have a tremendous schedule of activities and offerings that will appeal to every member of the family. The Fourth of July celebration is, as always, a great day of GCC fun, fellowship, games, and food and drink for the entire family. But, the 4th is just a prelude to many, many other events throughout the remainder of the summer including craft beer tastings and dinners, wine dinners, farm-to-table offerings at our various dining venues, and numerous sporting and fitness events for all ages. Please plan your calendars around the multiple offerings included in this month’s newsletter. And, always remember to bring your guests to our events and show off your Club to prospective members. While we have added 20 new Enjoy your summer and I’ll see you at the Club! or reinstated members through June, we are a little less than halfway to our 2016 goal. As a “member by invitation only” Club, you are the key to maintaining and growing our membership ranks. Pete Davenport President

Membership

Summer is here and we hope you will come celebrate with us as the pool and the Donald Ross Terrace kick into high gear! The Membership Committee and I want to thank everyone sponsoring prospective members or having discussions with potential new members. Since January, we have expanded our GCC family by 20 new members (11 Senior New Issue, 6 Intermediate, 2 Young Professional and 1 Non-resident). Our Club is having a strong year for welcoming new members and we need to continue to encourage our friends and colleagues to experience all that our Club has to offer. Please remember that we have a two-week trial membership for qualified prospective members. This program allows a prospective member and their family to experience our Club on their own time and at their convenience. Please support the work of the Membership Committee by inviting a friend, neighbor or business associate to take advantage of a trial membership and enjoy the many exciting upcoming events such as live music at the Donald Ross Terrace, Wicked Weed Beer Dinner and the Carolina Shrimp Boil. Please let me, the Membership Committee or Brittany Mitchell, our Membership Director, know if you have any questions regarding the two-week trial membership, how someone can become a member of our Club or how we can help showcase the Club to a prospective member. You can reach Brittany at (336) 275-8506 or b.mitchell@ greensborocc.org. Also, remember to check our membership page on the website and the bulletin board downstairs to see all posted members. If you have any comments or concerns in regards to posted members please contact our Membership Director, Brittany Mitchell. Matthew Rankin, Chairman Membership Committee

Wicked Weed Beer Dinner Tuesday, July 19th

7:00 p.m. | Donald Ross Terrace

In 2009, Walt and Luke Dickinson sat at a craft beer bar and talked about the dream of opening their own brewery focusing on big, West Coast hoppy ales and authentic Belgian ales brewed to inspire those who drank them. Wicked Weed strives to brew not only what the people want, but what will tantalize them to experience something new. They push to be better brewers, brew better beer, and inspire their patrons to fall in love with every pint. Wicked Weed is committed to letting the wildness of beer, the nonconformance of craft, and the conviction of creativity lead. This exciting beer dinner will pair the unique Wicked Weed beers with Chef Greg's fantastic and creative action stations. $40 per person | 72-Hour Cancellation Policy in Effect

Special Events Silver Oak Wine Dinner

July | August Wine Features

6:30 p.m. | Irving Park For over 40 years, Silver Oak Cellars focused on perfecting the Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world’s most magnificent wine grapes. The family knew the formula of producing the perfect depiction of an Alexander Valley and Napa Valley Cabernet and they understood what the vineyards could produce as well as the flavors that would best represent the region’s titans.

Trefethen Chardonnay Napa Valley 2014

Both the Napa Valley and the Alexander Valley are crafted with a single-minded focus on wine excellence. Sourcing from only the highest caliber fruit and using an extended aging process, Silver Oak creates delicious wines that are drinkable upon release. To make this evening one to remember, we will also serve the Twomey Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. There will also be a special tasting of the Twomey Merlot. This is your opportunity to secure the very limited amount of the 2011 Napa Valley that remains and be the first to purchase the highly anticipated 2012 Alexander Valley. $140 per person 72-Hour Cancellation Policy in Effect

Save the Date October 26th November 9th

A classic vintage for the Napa Valley, the 2014 growing season was characterized by warm days and cool nights in the Oak Knoll District. The wine has a spicy nose which highlights apple, pineapple, lemon cream and floral aromas. A rich body lingers with flavors of vanilla, apple pastry and lemon zest. The mild summer gave us ideal hang-times for very even ripening on the vine and thus produced a rich, well-balanced wine with bright acidity and a slight stony mineral finish.

Girard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013

Girard has been making Cabernet and Cabernet-based blends for four decades and does its best to represent the diversity of different climates and soils found throughout the Napa Valley. Aromatics showcase dark fruit notes intertwined with mocha and vanilla bean. Baking spice notes also blend with hints of aged cigar box. On the palate there is blackberry and cassis, mocha powder and a touch of rich leather. The finish of the Cabernet showcases rich dark fruit and expressive tannins.

Golf Golf Update Vince Lombadi said, “Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” There has never been a truer word spoken. Many golfers practice their golf swings and short games using the same techniques they have used in the past, yet expect different results. And we all know what the definition is of attempting to do the same thing over and over while expecting a different result. Your GCC Professional staff is trained and equipped to assist you to become the best golfer you can be. The continuing education the Professional Staff seeks and the technology available to us is all put into practice when we help you accomplish your goals - whether that goal is to play well enough to not feel self-conscious and enjoy the game with your friends, break 80 or 90 or play competitively. An example of the technology is the app we have downloaded on our smart phones and iPads called “hudl technique.”

July | August 2016

This application provides us the opportunity to video your swing, provide instant visual feedback for you to see your swing and make immediate suggestions using graphics on the screen or show comparison swings. We can also provide audio feedback on the video and email or text it to you for review at a later time. This technology, along with the FlightScope launch monitor are tools used to help you improve your game.

Cause and Effect Since arriving in September of last year, I have noticed a common theme conveyed by members during the interview portion of an initial lesson. Many members feel they are moving too much in the downswing, sliding their hips, legs and knees or moving their hips laterally. They believe this motion is the reason they are hitting weak shots to the right, losing distance and just not compressing the ball. When asked the question of what happens when they try to stop sliding or moving their lower body, the answer is typically that they hit worse shots. After watching their swings on video and understanding the cause and effect of their motion, they realize the hip slide, lateral movement or body motion they have been feeling is caused by something else occurring in their swing. When they try to stop sliding their hips, they are actually negating a compensation from their golf experience, athleticism and handeye coordination to actually help them hit the ball as solidly and accurately as they can. Upon counteracting and changing the main reason their lower body slides, the movement disappears and their swings feel more effortless.

The recent decision of the Board of Directors to build the Golf Learning Center will only enhance your opportunities to improve your game. Not only will it be a place to take a golf lesson, but a laboratory of sorts where we will continue to experiment with different technologies (such as the hudl app), teaching aids and a golf simulator. This is all very exciting and will be a great addition to the golf experience at GCC.

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your games. The Golf Professional Staff is here to help you understand the cause and effect of your swings, play more often and enjoy the game more. To schedule a lesson please call the Farm Professional Shop. Have a fantastic summer.

Turf Talk Summer Madness Without question, summer is by far the busiest time of the year for our golf course maintenance team. The Bermuda is growing at full speed and at the same time the Bentgrass greens are losing their roots even quicker. While it is a full time job just keeping up with the day to day conditioning on the courses, this is also the time of year we try to make numerous repairs and improvements.

Farm Practice Bunker

Over the past six years there has been nearly 18 inches of sand buildup on the primary practice bunker located on the Farm short game complex. The staff took this project on by essentially rebuilding the entire face of the bunker. The sod was removed and all the sand buildup was excavated down to the originally soil level. The face was then resodded with sod taken up from new drain line construction on #9. The result is a practice shot where the golfer can once again see the green when standing in the bottom of the bunker.

Irving Park

• Repair thin areas in fairways. • Repair areas where tree removals have exposed large dead stands of turf. • Repair select areas of cart paths damaged by tree roots.

Golf Course Reminders

• Repair ball marks on the greens. • Rake bunkers behind yourself and place rakes back in bunkers parallel to the line of play. • Fill in divots using sand bottles provided on carts. Aquatics Summertime is Here!

Blue Dolphins

Many thanks to all the kids and parents who came out Memorial Day Weekend, and participated in our 4th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. The weather held and it ended up being a wonderful day at the pool! In case you missed it, the “Speed of America” crewed by Andrew Poole and Clay Minor swept by the competition, finishing first across the pool. We had boats that were all about team spirit and costumes. Of course we had several boats that could not quite make it across the pool, but “Silver Toy” powered by Andrew Steinl, and Kieran and Davis Mohorn took home the “Titanic” award for the most spectacular sinking. They had almost finished the race when their boat sank in a fabulous style. Our most creative boat went to “Tepid Waters” crewed by Jack and Cameron Britts. Our most attractive boat was “The Swimming Unicorn” designed by Lila and Amelia Logan. The two boats with the most team spirit were the “Quackers” crewed by Morgan Green and Reilly Crosby, and “The Lightening” powered by Finn and Reece Tisdale. Lastly, we handed out a best dressed team award and that went to “The Flying Pig”, decorated by Emma Steinl and Sally Rose, who also wore matching pig costumes! We hope to see even more duct tape, bigger and crazier designs, and ridiculous costumes in 2017!

Championship Time

The Blue Dolphins are preparing for another City Meet Championship on July 7th, 8th and 9th which will mark the final meet and close of the 2016 swim season. The Blue Dolphin family will bring a close to a phenomenal season, and once again give performances in the pool that are worthy of any championship final. Following the closing ceremonies on the final day of City Meet Championships, we invite all Blue Dolphin Swimmers and families out to the Irving Park Pool, for our traditional Blue Dolphin Championship Night Swim! The Irving Park Pool will close at 8:00 p.m. and will then open up to Blue Dolphin Swimmers only. All coaches will be on deck to celebrate our winning season, with food, fun, night swimming and much more!
