President’s Message The Uniqueness of Greensboro Country Club

Gail I. Bernstein Club President

When I was a little girl, our family went to the Club at Carlson almost every Sunday afternoon to grill out for dinner. I have fond memories of swimming, playing games and having casual dinners at the picnic tables at Carlson Farms. When our two Clubs merged in 1968, it didn’t take long for my family to get to know many of the families at the “in-town” Club. As a teenager, I enjoyed all that the Irving Park Club had to offer, including ping-pong games in the Pavilion, sledding on the golf course, tennis clinics and swimming with my friends. The Club became my home away from home. Greensboro Country Club has provided a warm and welcoming community for me from the time I was a small child and throughout my married life with my own family.

March | April 2015

While we each value different aspects of our Club, I feel certain that articulating the facets that mean the most to you wouldn’t be difficult. For me, it’s the outstanding staff and the service they provide, the wonderful dining options and the opportunity to be with friends in an atmosphere where the staff knows us and cares about our Club experience. As members, it is critically important that we think about sponsoring new members so that they can share these experiences and ensure the longterm viability of our Club.

Page 2

The Board is working hard to continue building on the work that has been done in the past to provide the best Club experience for us as members and for future generations. In addition to financial oversight of the budget (both operational and capital) and membership attraction and retention, the Board will focus its attention this year on re-evaluating our mission statement and updating our three-year strategic plan, as well as developing a governance process to provide continuity and thoughtful leadership transition from year to year. In addition, our

efforts will be centered on developing a longterm master plan for the Irving Park campus and golf course, as well as the focus for the Farm campus. Our 2013 Capital Projects Committee led by Davy Davidson, identified the near and longterm major areas of focus for our Club based on the results of the member survey as well as recommendations from key staff members. Using this information, as well as input from other Club Committees, our architects have been hard at work developing plans for our review. I assure you that whatever plans the Board brings to the membership, we’ll provide ample opportunity for you to give us feedback and provide input so that the final product will be a plan that will carry us well into our future. Our goal is to inspire everyone to envision an even better future rather than just solving current problems. It’s an exciting process, and one that takes time, but will be well worth it in the end! In the meantime, there is much that we can all do to benefit the future success of our Club. Dine often at the Club, use the facilities, and plan your family and business events at the Club. Think about potential members who might be interested in joining our Club family. Somewhere out there, are other young children who, along with their families, would enjoy all that our Club has to offer. I hope that together we can find them and share the unique qualities that make our Club so special. Respectfully,

Gail I. Bernstein President

Membership Message from the Membership Committee Chairman During my tenure on the Membership Committee over the past three years, I’ve been asked nearly 50 times “when is the Club going to offer a “special deal” to bring in new members.” The question typically comes from non-members who appreciate all that our Club has to offer but have not been quite ready to move forward. It’s time to announce that a “special deal” is now here. Prospective members can apply for membership to the Greensboro Country Club before May 1, 2015 for our current initiation fee of $25,000. After May 1st, the initiation fee will increase to $30,000. The increase reflects the added value, amenities and services the Club offers members and our desire to support future improvements to the Club.

Please take time before May 1st to reach out to friends, neighbors and co-workers who you believe would like to be part of the GCC family. They cannot experience the Club without your invitation to be a guest, nor can they join the Club without your sponsorship. While we will have prizes and small rewards to thank all members who sponsor new members in 2015, the main incentive should be our shared desire to support and strengthen the Club. Please let me, the Membership Committee or our Membership Director Brittany Mitchell know how we can support you with outreach to a prospective member. You can reach Brittany at (336) 275-8506 or b.mitchell@greensborocc.org. Monty Hagler Membership Committee Chair

For Robert Craig, winemaking always begins with the vineyards -- more specifically, with their belief in the crucial importance of vineyard location in producing wines of tremendous depth and character. By concentrating on small quantities of wine from distinctive Napa Valley mountain vineyards, they have been able to create wines that reflect the impact of “terroir,” or the combination of soils, climate and viticultural characteristics of the growing locale. Dining From the Chef “Everyone is always hungry and thirsty!” This statement that couldn’t be truer within the walls of GCC. Therefore, we are always researching, developing and brainstorming new culinary creations to satisfy everyone’s need to fuel the fire within. With that in mind we have been busier than ever thanks to a mild winter; thanks Mother Nature and thank all of you for coming to your Club to enjoy everything we are creating for you!

March | April 2015

If you have not experienced one of our fun wine dinners, jump in! These intimate dinners with the winemakers and owners are selling out quickly. Steve Matlaga and John Centore have been very active getting top-notch wineries represented all year. We have some great ones coming up - Carte Blanche and Robert Craig just to name a few. If you have been one of the members participating in these events, we hope you have enjoyed them, thank you. I am going to try a new philosophy going forward. I believe we have developed your trust to leave it up to your culinary team to plan a wonderful pairing of food and wine. Going forward, I am going to plan the wine dinner menu a week in advance of the event. Of course, we will send the menu out to you then. By adopting this plan, we will be able to utilize some of our new purveyors that are local and some that are shipping fresh fish within 24-hours of receiving day-boat products on the docks from around the world. In addition, as the weather changes and we get back to the spring and summer growing season, my goal for the wine dinner menus is to go to the Piedmont Farmer’s Market and work with our local small farmers to truly bring you a spontaneous menu utilizing whatever is at its peak of freshness. My idea of pairing food with wine is to buy the best ingredients and let them show themselves off. We do ask if you have special dietary needs please give me a minimum of 24-hour notice so that we are able to give your meal the same thought

Page 10

and love that everyone else's meal receives. We make wonderful vegan and vegetarian menus, and want enough time to give these menus as much thought and care as the menu being presented. We have some fun ideas for March and April as things warm up. We are planning an oyster roast and lowcountry boil around nice weekends in the Donald Ross Terrace. We will watch the 10-day forecast and pick the dates around beautiful weather and get the information out to you all then. Be on the lookout it’s coming soon. Gregory John, CEC Executive Chef

Tennis Update Competitive tennis can be tough on a body especially as the weather gets warmer. A tennis training diet should focus on high-energy foods and adequate hydration. Here are some nutrition tips for before, during and after a tennis match as we move into our outdoor tennis season:

Hydration

It is very important to hydrate adequately before a match. At least 20 ounces of water two hours before is encouraged. It is also advisable to consume water during a match - about five ounces every changeover.

Pre-Match Diet

Foods high in carbohydrates to supply energy reserves, moderate in protein and low in fat is recommended. Some great foods to eat include fruit yogurt or bananas, smoothies made with fresh fruit, power bars, bagels, pretzels or saltine crackers.

Post Match Diet

March | April 2015

Eat food and drink fluids that replenish muscle energy and electrolytes lost in competition such as pasta, salads, rice and energy drinks. Hope this will help you prepare for competition this year during warmer weather. Please stop by the Tennis Center for more information on our competitive programs, and for information on how to maintain your stamina during your matches. See you on the courts! For each event played, members will receive Player of the Year (POY) points, and those who finish in the top 10 will receive additional points. After the season ending Chairman’s Cup, the top ten POY point leaders will be determined to participate in a Shootout on Saturday, December 5th. Prizes will be awarded to the top four winners in the Shootout.

Turf Talk No Rest for the Weary Most golf facilities in our region have a nine-month active golf season, which means they also have a period when the volume of play declines. In the Central Piedmont of North Carolina the “off” season typically falls between December and February. So with little play on the course one might question what type of activity the golf course maintenance staff engages in during the off-season. While golfer activity may be virtually non-existent during the off-season, there is still much work to be done by the golf course superintendent and his staff. It should be noted that a golf course is staffed on a seasonal schedule to meet demand, thus temporary workers are not available during the off-season to assist the full-time staff.

March | April 2015

Depending upon weather conditions, a variety of golf course projects can be completed even though the temperatures are not conducive for member play. Such activities might include planning for the new year, renovating bunkers, installing new drainage, rebuilding tee areas, leaf removal, storm cleanup, mulching landscaped areas, cutting back ornamental grasses, removing dead and undesirable trees, and planting new trees and shrubs, etc. These projects are best undertaken during a time of the year when the normal demands of mowing and conditioning the course are of a lesser priority. Various golf course accessories might also need repair. Benches, signs, water cooler containers, trash bins, ball washers, etc. may need to be built or renovated. Routine building maintenance on areas such as the turf care center and pump houses is often set aside for this time period. Going through all the equipment is also a focus for the golf course maintenance staff during this time period. The offseason also provides the opportunity to complete a variety of administrative responsibilities. The winter months are a critical time to review all our training needs related to areas such as safety, operating standards and proper equipment operation. Despite the mid-winter "blahs," we never forget the core mission which is to make sure the course is ready for play every day for those who do decide to venture out. The

Page 18

cold temperatures we typically experience during this time of the year make it difficult, but we still make an effort to condition the course whenever the weather allows. When the weather breaks and the greens thaw out we make sure to take advantage and mow and roll as often as possible. The bunkers are the same way. If they are not frozen we make sure they receive a fresh raking. Before we know it, sunnier days and warmer weather will be knocking on the door. By the latter part of February we will begin shifting gears from off-season mode back to in-season mode. We start with weed control applications to prevent summer weeds on nearly 300 acres of turf and roll right into fertilization, aerification and topdressing of the greens. The next thing you know we are in April and hopefully the tee sheets are once again fully booked and the grasses are turning green. So while golfers may be seeking cozier alternatives for recreational activities, rest assured the golf course maintenance staff is busy preparing the course for not only those select few golfers who venture out in subarctic weather, but also for the fair weather “in” season golfers as well. Doug Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course maintenance

Bruce Beuchler Memorial Bench

In accordance with the Board of Directors and the Greensboro Country Club Memorial Bench Program a bench was placed on the 17th hole of the Irving Park course in honor of Bruce Beuchler. This bench is prominently located at the intersection of Country Club and Granville. The bench was donated by his longtime friends in the Golf Group.

Aquatics Make a Splash this Summer The 2015 Swim Season Has Arrived!

Our swim team is a competitive swim program open to members, ages 5 to 18, from beginners to very competitive swimmers, who want to race across the pool. The Blue Dolphin swim team is one of 23 teams that make up the Greensboro Community Swim Association (CSA). Our swimmers compete in six age groups, male and female, and race in five consecutive dual meets beginning on June 10th and culminating with the annual City Meet Swimming Championship, July 9th - 11th held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Our team is all about creating friendships and lifelong memories with “Big Splashes” and end-of-season banquets, family cook-outs, friendly intra-team competitions, and more. The GCC Blue Dolphins have an exciting year ahead, preparing for another championship season. We welcome all eligible GCC children to join our team for a memorable season of competitive swimming as we set our goals and race to WIN! Participation Fee: The swim team fee is $95.00 for the first child, $80.00 for the second child, and $70.00 for each additional child. Swim Team Calendar

In 2014, for the twenty-sixth consecutive year, the GCC Blue Dolphins earned the first place trophy in the Community Swim Association’s Swim for Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The Blue Dolphins raised over $41,518 in 2014 to bring our twenty-six summer total to over $954,000! This would not be possible without the hard work of all of our swimmers. We encourage all of our swimmers and their families to participate in this wonderful fundraiser because if we each do a little, our team can do big things.

March 9th – May 15th - Swim Clinic (Greensboro College) M, W, F - 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

This could be an even more exciting year for our Swim for Cancer fundraiser, as the Blue Dolphins could be the first team to break the $1,000,000 mark! If we all work together, we can raise the additional $50,000 for the American Cancer Society and become the first swim team to raise over a million dollars for cancer research!
