Greensboro Country Club May | June 2014
President’s Message
Garson Rice Club President
And a young man's fancy turns to... Spring is finally here and I hope you all survived the "Great Winter of '14." I'm happy to report that Cathy and I recently took the opportunity to get out of town for a week and travel to the "Old Country."
Please know that making a reservation and trying to arrive within 15 minutes of your time goes far in helping your staff provide you the best possible dining experience. This is especially applicable to Friday and Saturday nights as well as special events.
While we were in Florida, I had the opportunity to visit a couple other clubs that have recently completed projects similar to our new outdoor venues. Each of these clubs benefited greatly from the addition of these new upgrades and it was beneficial to see other applications and results. We will use the knowledge gained to help insure our projects are the best they can be going forward. Despite a few weather delays, we hope to open the new outdoor bar and grill by Memorial Day, keep your fingers crossed.
Someone's going to Napa Valley! Great work introducing GCC to your friends via our two-week trial membership program, we are seeing results. Thank you! As a result of your involvement, our Membership Chair, Monty Hagler reports we have eight new members joining just before May and four more for posting as of my writing this letter.
How you gonna keep 'em down on the Farm? By the time you read this we will have had one of the most successful Farm Easter events ever with over 260 attendees. Beginning in May as usual, we will be offering the full lunch a la carte menu so please drop into the Clubhouse after your round and enjoy a beverage and a meal. Our Thursday night buffet continues to get positive support and as a result of this and your requests for more food service at the Farm, beginning in June we will offer cookouts/dinner on Saturday nights.
May | June 2014
I am aware that efforts to expand operations at the Farm in the past have been met with limited success and encourage you to support the Farm on Saturdays starting in June.
Page 2
Without Reservation I recently had our (seemingly forgotten) unofficial Club motto "Esse Dinus NonReservata" translated. According to our local Latin expert Buck Pearce, it means something like, "We're always glad to have you drop in to dine with us, but a quick phone call would be most helpful and appreciated."
I guess several hard working and very smart members will be taking their special someone to Napa Valley on our nickel - congrats! Please remember that everyone who sponsors a new member though June 30th will have a chance at the Napa trip (at least three couples) as well as other great experiences to be handed out at our "Big Fun Membership Initiative" cocktail party to be held in early July. Please start thinking and acting on who you can sponsor into GCC today! Always remember we are a member-sponsored Club which means we get our members from your recommendations and referrals. Sometimes, all you have to do is let a friend know they would be welcome at our Club and the two-week trail program is a great way to give them a "taste" of the GCC lifestyle. Here's hoping that many of you can enjoy the warmer weather on the golf course, tennis courts, in the pool and at our new poolside bar and grill - "The Donald Ross Terrace." Wherever it may be, I hope to see you...'round the Club! Garson Rice President
Membership Message from the Membership Committee Chairman Spring has clearly arrived at the Greensboro Country Club. The outdoor tennis courts are back in use, golf rounds are dramatically increasing and the sound of construction fills the air as our new outdoor “Donald Ross Terrace” dining and bar facility takes shape. It is the perfect time to enjoy your Club and to sponsor a new member.
a new member before June 30th will be entered into a drawing to win a range of fun and fabulous prizes such as VIP trips to San Francisco and Napa wineries, dinner parties with Chef Greg or Club gift certificates.
This spring marks the 10th anniversary of my family moving to Greensboro from Raleigh. We knew very few people in town, and my wife Christian had her hands full with our very young daughters. Being invited to Sunday brunch by our neighbors was our first experience we had with the Club, and it paved the wave for us to explore becoming members and experiencing all of the activities we enjoy today. As a membershipby-invitation only Club, your outreach to friends, neighbors and business associates is the only way they can experience the Club. Take time today to invite one perspective member to learn more about our Club.
If you know someone that would be a good addition to our Club, extend them a two-week guest membership to let them experience the Club first-hand. The Guest Member program allows the prospective member to use the Club’s facilities, amenities and services during a 14-day period. All Guest Members will be assigned an account number and billed for specific usage charges incurred (such as dining). Please contact Rachel Payne Morrow at (336) 275-8506 or r.payne@greensborocc.org for more information on these programs, obtain a Membership Packet or to arrange a tour of the Club for a prospective member. The Membership Committee is also available to help answer any questions or provide support. Thank you for your continued support of the Club.
Two months remain in our special offer for members to introduce the Club to at least one prospective member. Monty Hagler Every member that sponsors Membership Committee Chairman
The next scheduled Membership Committee meetings will be on Tuesday, May 13th at 5:15 p.m. and Tuesday, June 17th at 5:15 p.m. If you need an application package or have questions regarding sponsorship please contact Rachel Payne-Morrow, Director of Marketing & Membership Development at r.payne@greensborocc.org or at (336) 275-8506 Ext. 117.

General Manager’s Message The sights and sounds of Easter have passed and we thank you for your strong support of GCC. Despite the rain on Saturday, we had a great “Alice in Wonderland” breakfast and a few “good times” as you can see from the pictures on the opposite page. So great to see “miles of smiles” and the endless energy created from consuming peeps and jelly beans. Steve Matlaga, CCM

Easter Egg Hunt
Page 4
On Easter, we had record participation at both Irving Park (603) and the Farm (265) and thankfully had great weather. As I reported last month, your participation at GCC has us off to a healthy financial start to the year with the exception of sports. Now that the weather has turned, please consider playing an extra round of golf or tennis and bringing a friend or guest out to participate in one of our fantastic Member-Guest golf events or Tennis socials. We even have the privilege of hosting a local U.S. Open qualifier on May 5th at the Farm. At the time of this writing I am aware of at least two Members and two staff that are also competing, so come out and support them and watch local and regional stars try to qualify for our national championship. Thank you all for using and adapting to our new electronic tee and tennis time system. It has never been easier to make a reservation for golf or tennis day or night, so ask our staff for personal help if you are not taking advantage of this benefit. May is wonderfully full of fun events! Looking forward towards summer we are planning great times with more dining, youth and broader targeted activities. Chef Greg has promised me that Mother’s Day will be even more spectacular than Easter as a big “Thank You” to all the Moms. May also continues our string of monthly wine dinners with Todd Anderson as our featured wine maker. For Memorial Day Weekend we will be repeating the successful format of last year with mid-day activities and family events at the Farm pool and then evening activities with live entertainment at the Irving Park pool. The Memorial Day party theme this year will be “Gilligan’s Island Adventure”! With that in mind, we
expect all the cardboard boat regatta contestants to build a bigger, better and appropriately themed fleet. Join Lindsay and Kelley for boat building on May 7th to get started on your creation. I continue to receive great questions and interest about the Donald Ross Terrace. We are all excited about getting this new location open and running as a part of the Memorial Day Weekend. I will be sending out a detailed update around the first of the month to update you on our progress and our opening plans. June is no slouch with activities and events and a number of new offerings as a result of your feedback, ideas and suggestions. Full day Summer Camps, new and improved Happy Hour, ongoing live entertainment and Men’s and Women’s night play lead the schedule with a special “Shagging Under the Stars on June 28th at the Farm. While we are on the topic of the Farm, we are also going to expand the dining option at the Farm for June with the addition of a cook-out/dinner each Saturday night. Details of the weekly theme will be forthcoming in mid-May and our intention is to have cookouts when the weather cooperates and dinners inside when the weather is challenging. Please plan on supporting the Farm in June. Lastly, June is the final month to qualify for our Membership drive initiative. I have started to work with our vendors on the Napa/San Francisco trip as well as the other fantastic experiences you can qualify for… it’s looking like a lot of fun. Please keep your ideas and suggestions coming, they are the foundation of the fuel that drives us. The team and I value your feedback and support and we are here to make GCC an extension of your home.

Youth Events Notes from the Chef It is hard to believe that old man winter is finally gone; Easter has come and past and we are already thinking about pool season. We are in our final preparations and count down to the opening of the new Donald Ross Terrace. My team and I traveled to Charlotte to work to work side-byside with the hearth oven builder to get a good feel for what our new oven will be able to do. It’s not just for pizzas (hint, hint). Our culinary team is excited about the new venue. We have an exciting menu to start with, but will have the ability to make changes whenever we desire to feature local NC vegetables and ingredients when they are in peak of season. We look forward to the many possibilities for fun club and member functions as we get a chance to work within the new space. Chef Alex Peirce has moved from the Farm Club to put his full attention to the smooth running of the Donald Ross Terrace this season.
May | June 2014
We have a new focus on our pool service at Irving park in conjunction with the Donald Ross Terrace. We will have the snack bar window for the kids and a "resort atmosphere" for adults with service runners and a new poolside menu when the Donald Ross Terrace is not open. The Family Grille and Donald Ross teams will work together to service your culinary and beverage needs. The Farm Club will also feature a more streamlined menu at the pool and a new selection of sandwiches and salads at the Clubhouse. I would like to announce the promotion of Jeff Seagraves to Farm Club Chef. Jeff has been at the Farm as the sous chef for many years and has the experience and member knowledge that makes it a perfect fit.

Tennis Nutrition Tips Competitive tennis can be long and grueling on one’s body, especially as the weather gets warmer. A tennis diet should focus on high-energy foods and adequate hydration. Get prepared for competition this year during warmer weather! Here are some tips for preparing for a tennis match: 1. Hydration – It’s very important to hydrate adequately before a match - 20 ounces of water two hours before is encouraged. Consume water during match, about five ounces every changeover. 2. Pre-Match Diet – High carbohydrates to supply energy reserves, moderate in protein and low in fat is recommended (e.g. fruit yogurt or banana, smoothies made with fresh fruit, power bars, bagels, pretzels or saltine crackers). 3. Post Match Diet – Eat food and drink fluids that replenish muscle energy and electrolytes lost in competition (e.g. pasta, salads, rice, energy drinks, etc.).
Stay Hydrated!

The remaining three teams proceeded to the 17th where the team of Mark Yates, Ken Overbey, Charles Broadway and Chuck Jones with a solid tee shot from Overbey put their team in position and Charles Broadway converted the birdie with his famous pink ball. Jerry Highsmith rose to the occasion for his teammates Robbie Perkins, Chris Knox, John Wrenn and Tom Henley as they matched Overbey’s birdie with Chris Knox rolling in the putt to keep their team in the finals. Mark Yates again showed his skill level with a pitch over the left bunker within two feet of the flagstick. Jerry Highsmith’s answer was near the mark but fell minimally short. Congratulations to all. What a great shoot-out. Mark Yates, Ken Overbey, Charles Broadway and Chuck Jones prevailed!

Gene and Libby Grubb were the leaders in scoring on the shortened course setup. There were some spectacular shots as Joe Weatherly almost had a hole-in-one on the 13th hole leaving the ball a mere few inches from the hole. The golf balls due to their construction do not go full distance as a conforming ball so that made it somewhat challenging to figure the distance. Lee Bentsen expressed some doubt on the distance factor for the first few holes as he was consistently short of the target. But he figured it out when his ball was struck very solidly on the 13th and it sailed over the green creating a crescendo of musical vibrations near the parking lot. Closest-to-thehole prize for best “Dark Putt” of the evening went to Pete Monize who wielded his putter better than Stevie Wonder in the dark! A full field of nocturnal ladies and men enjoyed the evening of fun and the camaraderie that was followed by a gathering at the Fire Pit for imbibing of libations and the chef's creations.
Mark Yates, Ken Overbey, Charles Broadway & Chuck Jones Four teams went into a three hole Shoot-Out. Net team scores of 58 and 59 got them in the contest!

Golf Member Survey: “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”
We have the results of the member golf survey. Thanks to all the members who took the time to assist us with your expectations and comments. We are formulating an action plan to address the suggestions and comments from the survey. Some have already been touched upon such as the Night Golf, which was a suggestion from the survey. And it was a good one.
Great Shot!
In the cold, blustery conditions on Sunday, March 30th, Don Smith dunked his tee shot on the 8th hole at the Farm. He used a 7 iron from 164 to make his 7th career ace. Jim Dowtin, Bill Burling and Bill Roach witnesses the great shot plus two other birdies by Smith on the front nine… Pinehurst #4, Jim Belcher made his 3rd hole-in-one on #14 using a 5 iron from 182 to the amazement of Chan Badger and Alex Poole. Dr. Badger commented recently that it was the second time he had witnessed an ace in his Sunday group. He hoped he was next. And on Saturday, March 15th, Nicholas Poole made his 2nd hole-in-one while playing Oak Valley in Winston Salem with his dad for a practice round for the Mid-Am qualifier. Alex Poole, his father asked when it was his turn to make the ace. Two weekends in a row, he witnessed an ace! Nicholas' second ace was at age 15. His first was age 10 at Country Hills.

One other common response was that many members do not have a steady group to join every weekend. We want to assist In this area. As a start in that direction, we are providing an avenue with a new group with the same starting time each week on Saturdays. Because golf has such a myriad of results in playing the game from the good bounces and the bad ones, we took the inspiration from Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach to entitle the name of the group as in the movie, “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.” See you on the courses!

Turf Talk Spring Is Slowly Ushering In In my last newsletter article, I discussed our concerns regarding the potential for winterkill. While the green-up of our warm season grasses is slower than normal this year, it does appear damage will not be as widespread as we had once feared. While we do expect slightly more damage than what would be expected in a typical year, it is now apparent that the wet conditions and snow cover did a good job of insulating the turf from some of the colder than normal temperatures we experienced throughout the months of January and February. Another weatherrelated issue the staff was forced to deal was the early March snow, sleet, ice and wind storms. The Irving Park course suffered significant damage related to ice buildup on trees and the staff spent the better part of four weeks after the storm cleaning up and removing debris. The Farm course suffered less damage from the ice storm but a storm that produced strong winds a few weeks later brought down nearly a dozen trees. While the majority of the damage from these two weather events has now been dealt with, it has put the staff several weeks behind on their regularly scheduled spring maintenance tasks.

Prior to Beacon Woods, Steve had also spent time working at Eastlake Woodlands Country Club and Innisbrook Resort. Steve has been married for 27 years and has one son. Steve’s primary hobby is flying radio controlled airplanes on weekends and gardening. His favorite movie is "Fried Green Tomatoes." Fitness As we move into the summer months, I would like to invite you to review all that GCC Fitness has to offer you and your entire family! Last November one of our personal trainers, Robyn Gest and I spent a weekend becoming certified as NG360 Golf Performance Specialists. This weekend certification occurred after completing an intense 23hour online program that we accomplished at our own pace. On April 5th we were able to launch this program to our members at the first GCC golf event of the year. Since then we have warmed up golfers during men's, ladies and junior golf events. This program is designed to assist golfers with the movement of their golf game through an analysis of their golf swing, followed by exercises to increase mobility, strength, balance and endurance. A comprehensive personalized plan is then developed to work on the necessary areas assessed.
