Greensboro Country Club January | February 2018
Time for Some Summer Fun!
President’s Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Fellow Members, Thank you for being a member of Greensboro Country Club! We had a terrific year in 2017 and are very excited about the future. I am looking forward to serving as your President again in 2018. As so many of you know, we experienced the very sad and unexpected passing in 2017 of Holt Gwyn, who was serving as our Vice President and was slated to become President of GCC in 2018. Our succession planning was not quite ready for the circumstances that we faced in losing Holt, which has led to my continuing as President for another year. Despite the circumstances, I appreciate very much this opportunity and look forward to serving our Club in 2018 and to continuing to work with our terrific General Manager Robert Lesinger and our wonderful staff. A few thank you’s are very much in order at this point. Please join with me in thanking past President Pete Davenport, Jason Bohrer, Ed LeBlanc and Lee McAllister, all of whom are rotating off the Board this year, for their countless hours of volunteer service to our Club. Also, please join with me in welcoming to the Board our new directors Richard Beard, B.J. Szafran, Cabell Poindexter, Charles Wright and Monty Hagler, who will each be joining us for a three-year term. I want to thank each of them in advance for their willingness to serve our Club. I would also like to share a few highlights from 2017 and a few things to keep in mind as we start the new year:
January | February 2018
We continued to develop the GCC senior staff in 2017 and feel that we are well positioned for the future. We were very pleased in 2017 to add Head Chef Shayne Taylor, CFO Michelle Lunney, Membership Director Lori Frasier, Fitness Director John McCallister, and Facilities Manager Jason Hinson. We also completed significant capital improvements at GCC in 2017, including the Farm course greens conversion, the Farm clubhouse renovation and our new state-of-the-art teaching pavilion. With our two golf courses and the amenities that we have added, we are confident that our golf facilities, by any standard, are truly a best in class offering and certainly the finest in this area. We finished 2017 on a high note in terms of new member recruitment, with the addition of approximately 50 new members who responded to the new member initiative that we launched in November. We are excited about the
Page 2
energy and facility utilization that these new members and their families will bring to GCC. Our membership drive will remain open into the spring, so please continue to identify prospective new members and bring them over for a visit. Lori Frasier will be happy to work with you in showcasing our facilities to any of your prospects. And don’t forget that you will receive one month’s free dues if you sponsor a new member! We expect our strategic planning efforts to accelerate significantly in 2018. We are continuing to work with Chambers USA, a nationally recognized expert in strategic planning and facilities design for country clubs, and we hope to bring some exciting proposals to the membership soon. We appreciate your input and support as we continue with this process and we urge you to contact Robert Lesinger or any member of the Board with your strategic and facilities planning suggestions. Our financial position at GCC is strong. Our budget for 2018 is reasonable and realistic and will enable management to operate the Club and maintain our facilities without compromise. We are very fortunate to be in this position, which of course is driven by membership support. We obviously have a lot going on at GCC and I feel strongly that we can all be very excited about the future and the membership experience that our staff is prepared to deliver. I will look forward to seeing you and your families soon at GCC. My best to everyone for 2018! Very truly yours,
Thomas C. Watkins President

Membership Message Happy New Year! I hope each of you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with your families and friends and are ready to start 2018! I am honored to be your new Membership Chair, and I’m looking forward to working with all of you to continue our Club’s reputation as the premier Club in this area. I’d like to thank Matthew Rankin for his leadership over the past two years. I have warned him that he’s not going far! As Matthew pointed out in his last message to you in the November/December Newsletter, 2017 marked the 11th year in a row that our Club has experienced net annual losses in membership. I think you’ll all agree that this is a trend we would like to see reversed! As you know, we began a Board-approved membership drive in November, with the goal of attracting new members and families to our Club. As of this writing (which is in late November due to our printing deadline), we have welcomed 28 new members. This will result in a positive increase in our membership for the year!
Not surprisingly, we are continuing to receive many inquiries about membership in our Club. Our excellent reputation in this community is enviable. Importantly, we are an “invitation only” Club, and all applicants will be interviewed by members of the membership committee, and due diligence will be conducted, just as we always have. Our programming continues to get better and better, so I encourage you to take advantage of all we have to offer our members! I’d like to introduce you to our new Membership Committee for 2018: Kelli Coley John Nosek Kathryn Cone Garson Rice Scott Faircloth Heather Suire Sarah Healy Rob Sypher Marc Magod Patrick Theisman Bill McNairy Kappie Yates Sarah Beth Murphy Please feel free to reach out to any of us or the Membership Director, Lori Frasier, with any questions or thoughts you might have!

General Manager's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! 2017 has flown by, and as your General Manager, I have had one year to greet you, observe, listen to comments, suggestions and feedback, and get to know most of you. I want to thank you for allowing me the pleasure of serving as your General Manager. I take pride in knowing that you love to be at your Club and have your memorable events here.
January | February 2018
“Generosity is the most natural outward expression of an inner attitude of compassion and loving kindness.” – Dalai Lama XIV. I would like to thank you all for contributring to the annual Holiday Bonus fund which benefits the most appreciated asset of the Club, our Staff. Your continued generosity is respected by each and every employee. A very large thank you for donating to John Centore’s GoFundMe page last summer. Your donations have allowed JC to take the time he needed to endure and fund his cancer treatments. We expect a slow but progressing recovery and his eventual return to work as soon as he regains his strength and stamina. Lastly, donations have been made to purchase two clocks for Mr. Holt Gwyn and Mr. John Jester. These special clocks are a memorial to our two friends that loved the game of golf. The clocks will be placed at the Farm and at Irving Park. A very special thank you to Dr. Gene Grubb and Daniel Craft for gathering donations to procure both clocks. I am happy to announce that 2017 brought us our busiest year to date, and for this I thank each of you for bringing your family and friends to the Club to dine in our venues, attend wine dinners, the speaker series, Thanksgiving buffet, modelo and margherita nights in the Donald Ross Terrace, and of course, our best event of the year, the Holiday Gala. Each year, we strive to improve from the previous year, and the staff and I hope you enjoyed all of this year's activities. Thank you for communicating your wishes, and telling me what you want to experience at your Club. We strive to offer the very best in entertainment, dining and enjoyment and wish Greensboro Country Club to be an extension of your home. Speaking of the Holiday Gala, it was our best event of the year. We welcomed 644 people, who enjoyed the music, food and after party in the Men’s Locker Room. We spend a great deal of time planning the Holiday Gala and it’s my personal favorite because I love to see everyone all dressed up in tuxedos and gowns and having a great time. We will come up with some-
Page 4
thing new and special for next year too, so be on the lookout for our promotional videos next fall advertising the Holiday Gala. One of the most exciting things about next year's Gala is that we have booked the hottest band on the East Coast, “Simply Irresistible!” Check them out on YouTube and you will be amazed at their high-energy talent. This year we are planning for some minor enhancements to the Irving Park Clubhouse in the main kitchen, employee break room and some staff offices. As you may know, the Club is offering pick up and drop off service to and from your homes to our Clubhouses in our luxury sprinter. This service will help with your busy schedules, and we are hoping it will also alleviate some of the issues with our parking situation. Please call the Reception Desk to make your reservations. Continuing with our Strategic Planning effort in the first quarter of 2018, the direction will be defined based on your feedback from the Member Survey. We will continue to communicate with you about our future enhancements to the Club so you are aware of the exciting changes coming your way. Our Membership Drive continues to move forward and the Club has welcomed 48 new Members from the inception of this program. Please sponsor your friends, as our program will continue into the spring season. The next time you are in the Fitness Center, please welcome our new Fitness Director, Mr. John McCallister MS, CSCS. John originates from Huntington, West Virginia where he attended West Virginia University with a Master of Science Degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Coaching and Strength Conditioning. John was a college Strength and Conditioning Coach for 15 years with stops at West Virginia University, Mississippi State University and Elon University as well as five years in the private sector. We also welcomed a new Facilities Manager, Jason Hinson. Jason has more than 19 years of experience in Facilities maintenance and an extensive background in HVAC systems, plumbing and electrical systems. We are very happy to have both John and Jason join the Greensboro Country Club family. We are looking forward to offering you more wonderful funfilled events in 2018. I look forward to seeing you at the Club in the near future. Kind Regards, Robert Lesinger General Manager/COO

Dear Members, I would like to wish you all a happy New Year. 2017 went by so fast, so I speak for the entire culinary staff when I say we had a blast doing more events, wine dinners and socials than we’ve ever done before. And…we’re looking forward to another great record-breaking year in 2018! In January we’ll get things rolling with our GCC Speaker Series with Howie Franklin, Retired Air Force One Steward. From there we have Casino Night on January 19th followed by Jack Frost Bingo on January 26th. We will end the month with our Reynolds Wine Dinner on January 31st. Come check out these wines. They are truly fantastic, and maybe the best we’ve had to date. In February, don't miss our Father Daughter Dance on the 9th. We will also host an Italian wine dinner on the 21st that features some rustic and contemporary approaches to pairing food with one of the most complex wine regions in the world.
January | February 2018
On the restaurant front, look for all new seasonal menus at each venue throughout January. We will also start our "Dry Aged Beef" program this month and hope to have a full product line of GCC dry aged beef products coming in late February. As always, please feel free to send feedback to myself or our chef de cuisine in each of our restaurants. Your tastes are why we’re here! Happy Cooking, Shayne Taylor, CEC, CCA Executive Chef

Golf Update
While the weather has turned chilly, the excitement and enthusiasm for our golf program has not wavered! Our new Teaching Pavilion is getting plenty of use. With the heaters keeping golfers warm as they practice, we hope to see many Members out practicing and getting a head-start on the 2018 season. In addition, we have begun a winter semester of our Junior Golf Operation 36 Program. Our inaugural fall semester was a tremendous success, we are continuing with an even larger class for this winter semester. A special thank you to our Golf Committee members rotating off the committee. They have been strong supporters of the golf program and leant their time, energy and talents to making the program as successful as possible: Cabell Poindexter, Chairman, Lori Harrington, Walt Howell, Gary Rankin and Ed Sartin. Bud Taylor, PGA Director of Golf
It’s no secret that to reduce your number of three putts it helps to have perfect pace on your putts with the ball finishing about 6-12 inches past the cup. Since we have been using our new Blast Motion sensors for putting analysis it’s clear that the golfers with better distance control tend to repeat the amount of “time” for their strokes. In other words, the amount of time they take from initial backstroke to impact stays relatively consistent even on different length putts such as five feet, seven feet, nine feet, etc. To help keep your stroke time relatively consistent it can be helpful to talk to yourself while you putt. For example, as your putter starts back say “tick” and then at impact say “tock.” Another option some golfers use is, “1-2,” and with golfers that hit putts too hard, my personal favorite, “marsh-mallow.” If you would like help with your putting and want to try one of our Blast Motion sensors please call the Farm Professional Shop and schedule a golf lesson! Year in Review
2017 Irving Park Year in Review
Wesley Proctor - Irving Park Course Superintendent We were met with many challenges this year at Irving Park. The most noteworthy was the additional golf rounds that we experienced while the Farm course greens renovation was underway. With the Farm closed, the additional play made our daily tasks unusually difficult at times. Fortunately, the dry summer months provided us an opportunity to reduce our irrigation output by over 35% resulting in slightly drier and firmer conditions than years past. It should almost go without saying that we had another successful year with the management of our Bentgrass greens throughout the harsh summer months. In addition to the standard repairs made to the course throughout the year, we completed a small landscape renovation to the Irving Park tennis courts and a small landscape upgrade to the Golf Professional Shop entrance.
Pioneering – (definition: “one who is first or among the earliest in any field of inquiry, enterprise, or progress.”) We were talking to a local superintendent this fall about the challenges with a new variety of grass being used on the greens. Because of the lack of information available to us in order to make it a putting surface, and we are the fourth course to install this variety, he said, “You guys are pioneering!” I never really thought of it in that way, I just wanted to make the greens something that the Membership can be proud of. But that is exactly what pioneering is, embarking on a new and challenging endeavor. All of those experiences lead up to the next word. Fun – (definition: “providing entertainment, amusement, or enjoyment.”) I can truly say that we experienced all those emotions this year. Whether it was laughing at each other when we were out in the rain removing the sod from #5 green or the satisfaction when we completed that green complex. The entire process was definitely an adventure and one that we are still on and are excited to see continue. It was genuinely a thrill to go through the conversion of the greens this year and we are looking forward to the fun next year as we continue pioneering to figure out what will really make the greens an exceptional putting surface.
Newly Planted Chipping Green
As the winter months approach, we will continue with our pruning and tree removal plan. This year it includes about 40 trees, some of which are leaning pine trees throughout the golf course. We will also continue our heavy pruning on the course including around the Clubhouse and Tennis area.
2017 Farm Year in Review
Brooks Turner - Farm Course Superintendent There are two words that can sum up the year for the Farm maintenance staff: "Pioneering" and "Fun."

As the Holiday season is now upon us, another excellent golf season has come to an end. This has been my 17th year here at Greensboro Country Club and every year has proven to be different, which is one of the most exciting parts of the job for me. Our team’s focus is to always try to provide our Membership with a well-conditioned golf course they will enjoy on any given day. There is no status quo in maintaining a golf course, and the progress made this year is a good representation of the never-ending need to change and improve upon the golf course. As is customary for this time of the year, I ask my two superintendents to give a brief summary of the year in review to include some of the obstacles and hurdles they overcame while trying to achieve the goal of providing those consistently high caliber conditions mentioned above. - Doug Lowe – Director of Golf Course and Grounds
